Engineering And Functional Modification Strategies For T Lymphocytes Using Therapeutic Macromolecules, Polymers, Micro And Nanoparticles, Venkata Sesha Sai Abhinav Ayyadevara

Dissertations

T cells are crucial components of the adaptive immune system and are known for secreting various cytokines, which induce the proliferation of many immune cells, including T cells themselves. A subset of T cells, called the CD8+ T cells, are known for their ability to kill infected cells and cancer cells. Naturally, the potential in using T cells for immunotherapy of cancer is tremendous. For this purpose, however, it is often required to engineer T cells specifically to treat a particular type of cancer. For example, the FDA-approved immunotherapies, KymriahTM and YescartaTM, which come under the adoptive T cell therapy, …

The Effects Of Altitude On The Aerodynamic Performance Of Monarch Butterflies, Madhu Kandikere Sridhar Jan 2021

The Effects Of Altitude On The Aerodynamic Performance Of Monarch Butterflies, Madhu Kandikere Sridhar

Dissertations

The aerodynamic efficiency behind the annual migration of Monarch butterflies, the longest migration among insects, is an unsolved mystery. Monarchs migrate 4000 km at high altitudes to their overwintering locations in the mountains of Central Mexico at an altitude of 3000 m. The air is thinner at higher altitudes, yielding reduced aerodynamic drag and enhanced range. However, lift is also expected to decrease in lower density conditions. The objective of this research is to test the hypothesis that aerodynamic performance of Monarch wing improves at reduced density conditions at higher altitudes. First, we experimentally measured and documented the wing and …

Soar: A Holistic Approach To Supporting Survivors, Sabrina Glass

West Chester University Master’s Theses

In this thesis, I address the systemic issue of sexual violence and rape culture that affect students on college campuses at an alarming rate. By utilizing critical action research, I propose the creation of the Department of Survivor Outreach and Response (SOAR), a holistic and collaborative department that focuses on supporting and advocating for survivors of sexual violence while also conducting prevention and education initiatives. I emphasize the importance of Kimberlé Crenshaw’s concept of intersectionality (1993), encourage the use of the Social Change Model of Leadership (Astin & Astin, 1996), and empathy within leadership. SOAR is designed to ensure sexual …

Since 2001, five leading technology companies have acquired more than 600 other firms while avoiding antitrust enforcement. By accumulating technologies in adjacent or unrelated industries, these companies have grown so powerful that their influence over human affairs equals that of many governments. Their power stems from data collected by devices that people welcome into their homes, workplaces, schools, and public spaces. When paired with artificial intelligence, these devices form a vast surveillance network that sorts people into increasingly specific categories related to health, sexuality, religion, and other categories. However, this surveillance network was not created solely to observe human behavior; …

Political attacks against scientists and scientific research are nothing new, though the Trump Administration appears to have increased both the breadth and the depth of such attacks. What is new, it seems, are attacks on science that are not in service of protecting any identifiable regulated industry. Under the Trump Administration, the attacks on science are more systemic, and aimed more at reducing scientific capacity in the federal government, rather than mere one-off policy interventions to help an individual industry.

This Article suggests that the Trump Administration, more than previous administrations, has sought to use science as part of a …

Customers visit restaurants for varying reasons ranging from utilitarian – to satisfy hunger – to hedonistic – displaying cultural capital (Bourdieu, 1984) more recently theorized as culinary capital (Naccarato & Lebesco, 2012). Restaurants are even more significant in the new ‘experience economy’ (Pine & Gilmore, 1998) where lunch or dinner are conceptualized as ‘meal experiences.’ There is widespread acceptance of the pivotal role (about 33% of tourist spend) that food now plays in the tourism product of any country (Quigley et al., 2019).

Founder’s College - Scholarship and Professional Work

In light of the Black Lives Matter movement, the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) community has had to reflect on how their organizations can address their disparities in identity representation. To that end, the ACS Committee on Minority Affairs (CMA) has been called upon to advise various levels of the chemistry enterprise in their interventions, such as structured and actionable policy statements. As a result, this work was created to provide a model for all organizations to write catalytic diversity, inclusion, respect, and equity (DIRE) policy statements. The model herein acknowledges active tensions and leverages theory, analysis, and practical …

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

The northern portion of Death Valley National Park closely (but not entirely) corresponds to the northernmost portion of the Mojave Desert in California. From 2014 through 2019 we surveyed the vascular plants in the Eureka Valley, northern Last Chance Range, and northern Death Valley. This study area covers 1735 sq km and ranges in elevation from 810 to 2577 m; it contains the tallest sand dunes in California, a calcium-rich mountain range, and alkaline seeps. These features provide specialized habitats for narrowly and regionally endemic plants. Fossil data from packrat middens suggest that the local climate has become warmer and …

Factoring learner engagement during chemistry lessons is key if conceptual understanding is an objective. In Kenya however, the gradual decline in chemistry mean scores, coupled with evidence from studies, reveal disengagement in chemistry among learners. One of the most cited causes of this disengagement is the domineering teacher-centred teaching pedagogy. This action research studied how science content songs can be used to enhance engagement and interest in ionic bonding among high school learners in Kenya. The study, which was conducted in a mixed double-streamed secondary school, involved two collaborating teachers and 65 students, out whom, 8 participated in a focus …

Psychology Faculty Works

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused widespread and unprecedented disruptions in how we work, socialize, play, access health care and attain education. In higher education, the impact of these changes will be felt unevenly. Students from marginalized, racialized, and culturally diverse backgrounds, mirroring the realities of society, will likely bear the brunt. To deal with these challenges, resilience is the key. However, the bulk of resilience interventions are Eurocentric and fail to capture young adults’ socio-cultural and economic realities, especially in post-secondary and higher educational settings. This chapter discusses key considerations in devising, implementing, and evaluating the effectiveness of resilience programs …

Disciplining Skepticism Through Kant’S Critique, Fichte’S Idealism, And Hegel’S Negations, Meghant Sudan

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

This chapter considers the encounter of skepticism with the Kantian and post-Kantian philosophical enterprise and focuses on the intriguing feature whereby it is assimilated into this enterprise. In this period, skepticism becomes interchangeable with its other, which helps understand the proliferation of many kinds of views under its name and which forms the background for transforming skepticism into an anonymous, routine practice of raising objections and counter-objections to one’s own view. German philosophers of this era counterpose skepticism to dogmatism and criticism, ancient to modern skepticism, and, importantly, conceptualize the transitions from one form to another, which forms the conceptual …

In the Big Data era, large graph datasets are becoming increasingly popular due to their capability to integrate and interconnect large sources of data in many fields, e.g., social media, biology, communication networks, etc. Graph representation learning is a flexible tool that automatically extracts features from a graph node. These features can be directly used for machine learning tasks. Graph representation learning approaches producing features preserving the structural information of the graphs are still an open problem, especially in the context of large-scale graphs. In this paper, we propose a new fast and scalable structural representation learning approach called SparseStruct. …

Organophosphate Pesticide Dose Estimation From Spot And 24-Hr Urine Samples Collected From Children In An Agricultural Community, Carly Hyland, Katherine Kogut, Robert B. Gunier, Rosemary Castorina, Cynthia Curl, Brenda Eskenazi, Asa Bradman

Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Spot urine samples are often used to assess exposure to organophosphate (OP) pesticides in place of “gold standard” 24-hr samples, which are cumbersome to collect. Assessment of non-persistent chemicals using spot urine samples may result in exposure misclassification that could bias epidemiological analyses towards the null. Few studies have examined the validity of measurements of urinary metabolites in spot samples to estimate daily OP dose or the potential implications of reliance on spot samples for risk assessments.

Objective: Examine the validity of using first morning void (FMV) and random non-FMV urine samples to estimate cumulative 24-hr OP pesticide dose …

The Role Of Culture In Land System Science, Kelly Hopping

Human-Environment Systems Research Center Faculty Publications and Presentations

Land system science (LSS) has substantially advanced understanding of land dynamics throughout the world. However, studies that explicitly address the causative role of culture in land systems have been fairly limited relative to those examining other structural dimensions (e.g. markets, policies, climate). In this paper, we aim to start a discussion on how to better include culture in LSS. Through four examples, we show how aspects of culture influence land systems in myriad ways. Building on existing causal land system models, we propose a conceptual framework for the role of culture in land use and summarize promising methodological innovations for …
