Sex differences in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are well documented; males are diagnosed 4:1 over females. Testosterone (T) is one factor that differs by sex in humans and mice that could increase vulnerability to developing ASD in males. Valproic acid (VPA) is an anticonvulsant that has been found to increase the risk of autism in male offspring of pregnant women who take it to control seizures and is commonly used in mouse models of ASD. After prenatal VPA or vehicle on embryonic day 13, testosterone (T) or vehicle was administered to the mice on postnatal day 2 to investigate whether …

The Apiaceae family of plants contains over 3,500 species, many of which are used as food crops: vegetables (carrot, parsnip, celery, etc.), herbs (cilantro, fennel, dill, etc.), and spices (cumin, anise, caraway, etc.). Many spices have been shown to exhibit antimicrobial properties against both bacteria and fungi. We set out to determine if the Apiaceae spice extracts currently used in our lab for anticancer studies exhibit any antimicrobial properties. Ethanolic extracts were made from several Apiaceae seeds: Apium graveolens (celery), Cuminum cyminum (cumin), Anethum graveolens(dill), Foeniculum vulgare (fennel), Coriandrum satvium (coriander), Pimpinella ansium (anise), Trachyspermum ammi (ajwain), Carum carvi …

Protein Prenylation is the addition of lipids to select proteins that play a key role during the development of plants. There are three enzymes that play a role in protein prenylation: protein farnesyltransferase (PFT), protein geranylgeranyl-transferase-I (PGGT), and Rab geranylgeranyltransferase (Rab-GGT). However, there is a protein called PPAL that has a similar alpha subunit of PFT, PGGT, and RAB-GGT but its biochemical function is unknown. Physconmitrella patens, a type of moss, was chosen to explore the role of PpPPAL in the development process. There are two copies of PPAL found in moss. PPAL1 and PPAL2. To study the role …

On Volatility, Outliers, And Uncertainty, Chandler Lewis Clemons Jan 2021

On Volatility, Outliers, And Uncertainty, Chandler Lewis Clemons

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation is composed of three loosely related chapters, all of which are empirical. In Chapter 1, I examine whether expectations are formed in a systematically different manner during periods of low volatility versus periods of high volatility. I achieve this by measuring non-linearities in relationship between the SP 500 and the VIX across different market regimes. Three distinct market regimes are identified through a Markov Process, allowing for the capture of non-constant behavior in the relationship between contemporaneous price changes and future volatility expectations. The results indicate that the effect of the underlying asset on the supply and demand dynamics …

A Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment Among Small Farmers: A Case Study In Western Honduras, Claudia Caceres Jan 2021

A Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment Among Small Farmers: A Case Study In Western Honduras, Claudia Caceres

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Climate change is now affecting every known society. Small farmers in Low Income Countries (LICs) are especially vulnerable to climate change patterns because they depend heavily on rain, seasonality patterns, and known temperature ranges. To help build climate change resilient communities among rural farmers, the first step is to understand the impact of climate change on the population. This dissertation aims to use information and communication technology (ICT) to assess climate change vulnerabilities among rural farmers. To achieve this overall goal, this dissertation first proposes a comprehensive Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment Framework (CCVAF) that integrates both community level and individual …

Relational Savoring in Mothers of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: An Attachment-Based InterventionBy Gerin Elizabeth Gaskin Claremont Graduate University: 2021 Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are at risk for higher depressive symptoms and lower subjective well-being compared to parents of neurotypical children or children with other developmental delays. Current treatment approaches to support these parents primarily focus on psychoeducation and skills training, but few focus on strengthening the connection between parent-child dyads. This project included two studies that examined the outcomes associated with a novel intervention, relational savoring, which identifies and amplifies moments of parent-child connection. In …

Measuring Machine Learning Model Uncertainty With Applications To Aerial Segmentation, Kevin James Cotton Jan 2021

Measuring Machine Learning Model Uncertainty With Applications To Aerial Segmentation, Kevin James Cotton

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Machine learning model performance on both validation data and new data can be better measured and understood by leveraging uncertainty metrics at the time of prediction. These metrics can improve the model training process by indicating which training data need to be corrected and what part of the domain needs further annotation. The methods described have yet to reach mainstream adoption, and show great potential. Here, we survey the field of uncertainty metrics and provide a robust framework for its application to aerial segmentation. Uncertainty is divided into two types: aleatoric and epistemic. Aleatoric uncertainty arises from variations in training …

Force Regulation In Contractile Cells By Chemical And Mechanical Signaling, Esteban Vazquez-Hidalgo Jan 2021

Force Regulation In Contractile Cells By Chemical And Mechanical Signaling, Esteban Vazquez-Hidalgo

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Chemical and mechanical signaling are essential for physiological processes. Dysregu- lation of these signals can promote disease states by altering force generation. It is cru- cial that we understand how these signals affect force generation and the implication of that force in health and disease. We approach this by investigating cells from two types of tissues: heart tissue cells and epithelial tumor cells. Chemical signaling by intracellu- lar calcium directly regulates heart contractions. Altered calcium handling in heart cells is known to affect force generation in the heart, leading deleterious effects resulting in cardiovascular disease. Chemical and mechanical signaling in …

Prevalence And Predictors Of Unintended Births In Low And Middle-Income Countries: A Pooled Analysis Of 27 Nationally Representative Surveys, Daniel Woytowich

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Introduction

Rates of unintended births (UIBs) are disproportionately high in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where the capacity to provide care to unexpected mothers and their offspring is often lagging. To decrease the prevalence of UIBs and their negative impacts on children, women, families, communities, and health systems of developing nations, global health stakeholders must understand the characteristics of a woman's life in these regions that increase her risk for UIBs. This project identified and analyzed predictors of UIBs in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and South-East Asia among all women of reproductive age. It built on findings from previous studies while …

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Sleep disruptions are hallmarks in the pathophysiology of several stress-related disorders, including Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), both known to disproportionately affect female populations. Although previous studies have attempted to investigate disordered sleep in women, few studies have explored and compared how repeated stress affects sleep in both sexes in either human or animal models. We have previously shown that male rats exhibit behavioral and neuroendocrine habituation to 5 days of repeated restraint, whereas females do not; additional days of stress exposure are required to observe habituation in females. This study examined sex differences in sleep …

The Double Burden Of Racial Discrimination In Daily-Life Moments: Increases In Negative Emotions And Depletion Of Psychosocial Resources Among Emerging Adult African Americans, Nataria T. Joseph, Laurel M. Peterson, Heather Gordon, Thomas W. Kamarck

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Objective: Racial discrimination is a common experience for African Americans, but no research has examined how discrimination reported in daily-life moments influences concurrent negative emotions and psychosocial resources. Method: Emerging adult African Americans (N = 54) reported hourly on momentary racial discrimination, negative emotions, and psychosocial resources across two days. Results: Controlling for past discrimination and trait emotion, momentary racial discrimination was associated with greater negative emotions and lower psychosocial resources (ps < .05). The relationship between momentary racial discrimination and negative emotions was stronger among individuals residing in areas with fewer African Americans (simple slope p < .0001). The relationship between momentary racial discrimination and psychosocial resources was stronger among individuals reporting greater past discrimination (simple slope p < .0001). Vicarious discrimination (exposure to discrimination experienced by another person) was associated with higher negative emotions, p < .01, but not with psychosocial resources. Conclusion: These results are the first to demonstrate that personal and vicarious racial discrimination are associated with negative emotions and lower coping resources …

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic is a global health emergency resulting in widespread death and substantial disruption to daily life. Previous research has shown that novel disease outbreaks are associated with high stress levels and sleep impairments that lead to neuropsychiatric consequences. Therefore, it is vital to study both stress and protective factors such as coping and resilience that may hinder or help sleep quality during the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, as gender disparities exist in sleep quality, it is important to understand the relationship between pandemic-related stress, coping strategies, resilience, and sleep in bothgenders during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Studies have been devoted to describing the diet of D. monticola. However, knowledge of how D. monticola utilizes food resources through ontogeny remains unknown. We characterized D. monticola general dietary patterns and tested for ontogenetic diet shifts. We also inferred on juvenile recruitment patterns. We examined the stomach contents of 120 specimens ranging in size from 20 to 154 mm in standard length (SL). To infer on recruitment periodicity, we examined the size of specimens deposited in museum collections to compile size frequencies by month. We assume that the occurrence of smaller-size class categories will shed light on their recruitment …

Genetic Diversity & Connectivity Of Chasmanthium Latifolium (Poaceae) In Pennsylvania & The Effect On Conservation Status Of A Rare Species, Jonathan D. Hayes

Honors Theses

Chasmanthium latifolium (Michx.) Yates (Poaceae) is a loosely colonial, rhizomatous, perennial grass species that lives in riparian habitats, making it fittingly referred to as river oats. Native to the southern Midwest and the eastern half of the United States, C. latifolium reaches the northeastern edge of its range in Pennsylvania. Within Pennsylvania, eleven extant C. latifolium populations are found along four waterways: the Monongahela River, the Susquehanna River, and two tributaries to the Susquehanna River. This limited state distribution exhibits an east-west disjunct distribution, where western populations are largely separated from eastern populations with one centrally located population. Between the …
