Identifying Pathways Affected By The Hrpa Rna Helicase, Brandon Simons Jan 2021

Identifying Pathways Affected By The Hrpa Rna Helicase, Brandon Simons

Honors Undergraduate Theses

HrpA is a poorly characterized DEAH-box helicase found in many enterobacteria, including Escherichia coli. For unknown reasons, HrpA causes sickness in cells lacking Elongation Factor P, a transpeptidation enhancer that prevents ribosome stalling at proline-rich motifs during protein synthesis. HrpA's C-terminal RNA binding motifs and association with the degradosome suggest this protein interferes with an important translational process. Deletion of hrpA does not produce an overt phenotype, obscuring its role in cellular physiology. This thesis sought to identify pathways affected by this highly conserved protein. A bioinformatic analysis of HrpA's predicted interactome was conducted using a database called STRING. In …

Craving For Attention: Examining Mood And Attention Bias In The Moment As Predictors Of Alcohol Craving, Katie R. Moskal Jan 2021

Craving For Attention: Examining Mood And Attention Bias In The Moment As Predictors Of Alcohol Craving, Katie R. Moskal

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Alcohol consumption is prevalent on college campuses. There are a number of theories that seek to explain the link between alcohol use and mood. The affective-processing model posits that negative affect may interact with subconscious cognitive factors, such as attention bias (AB), to promote drug-seeking behavior. In contrast, the incentive-sensitization model suggests positive mood may drive drug seeking behavior, and this drive may be moderated by cognitive factors (e.g., AB). The current study hypothesized that both positive and negative mood would be associated with drug craving in the moment. It was further hypothesized that AB would moderate mood-craving associations. Participants …

Awareness Of Genetic Predispositions That Increase The Risk Of Breast Cancer, Carly Huber Jan 2021

Awareness Of Genetic Predispositions That Increase The Risk Of Breast Cancer, Carly Huber

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women in the United States and is the leading cause of cancer-related death among women worldwide. Certain demographics, such as racial/ethnic, age, and gender groups, are underrepresented in breast cancer studies. This lack of representation results in issues with creating genetic tests, as variants associated with those groups are not being detected. Furthermore, these underrepresented demographics are receiving a worse prognosis than those that are overrepresented in research. This study aimed to understand how informed the understudied racial/ethnic, gender, and age populations are regarding breast cancer and genetic testing compared to …

Fluid-Structure Interaction For A Deformable Anisotropic Cylinder: A Case Study, Jared T. Decker Jan 2021

Fluid-Structure Interaction For A Deformable Anisotropic Cylinder: A Case Study, Jared T. Decker

Honors Undergraduate Theses

For a structure designed to interact with the surrounding fluid, structural deformation under loads induced by fluid flows is an important factor to consider, and one which is traditionally difficult to account for analytically. Coupling the finite element method for structural analysis with the finite volume method for the determination of fluid response allows for accurate simulation of the pressure and shearing loads applied by the fluid onto the fluid-structure interface, while also determining localized structural displacements that would cause changes to the geometry of the interface. This work seeks to simulate the behavior of cylinders with varying heights and …

Generation Succession: Reconceptualizing Generations And Their Mark On The Social Landscape, Ryan Hill Jan 2021

Generation Succession: Reconceptualizing Generations And Their Mark On The Social Landscape, Ryan Hill

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This thesis explores the sociological underpinnings of generation by drawing on Mannheim's theory of generations and applying the concept as an explanative force in long-term societal change. Individuals of the same cohort and national culture make for a generation location; they share a similar parameter of experience within the stream of history. As individuals collectively enter into the formative years of adolescence, significant Imprint Events can forge a bond between them in terms of mindset and worldview (Habitus), which endure over the life course. This group of individuals, as a result, develop a generational consciousness that is distinct from other …

Targeting T Cell Metabolism To Ameliorate Graft-Versus-Host Disease, Karin Zikra Jan 2021

Targeting T Cell Metabolism To Ameliorate Graft-Versus-Host Disease, Karin Zikra

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is an important form of therapy for hematological genetic disorders and malignancies, particularly hematological cancers. However, common usage of this procedure is obstructed by graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), in which transplanted donor T cells wage an attack on recipient antigens, causing severe tissue damage and mortality. GvHD prognosis remains poor, and current treatment methods continue to be insufficient, especially for patients with more advanced and severe GvHD. T cells have been identified as the fundamental force behind GvHD, and their cellular metabolism is deemed vital to their fate and function, especially in pathogenic environments. A hallmark …

Analyzing Pathways To The J.D. With National Student Clearinghouse Data, Tiffane Cochran, Lauren Walker Jan 2021

Analyzing Pathways To The J.D. With National Student Clearinghouse Data, Tiffane Cochran, Lauren Walker

AccessLex Institute Research

The lack of diversity in legal education and the profession is a well-established fact. Data and rich commentary from law school scholars clearly illustrate barriers to entry for historically underrepresented groups. Yet, we continue to see persistent gaps in law school and bar admission among ethnic minorities—particularly, Black and Latinx students. And although information on first-generation and socioeconomically disadvantaged groups is harder to obtain, we also find inequitable access for these students where data are available.

Although discussions of law school diversity necessitate examination of students’ racial and socioeconomic backgrounds, they also require an analysis of the pathways students must …

Treatments For The Mitigation Of Immunotherapy-Related Neurotoxicities In Patients With Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Gautam Chiang

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

Lung cancer is the most common cancer type worldwide, with one of the highest mortality rates across all cancer types. Cancer immunotherapeutics such as immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have improved cancer treatment by promoting the body’s natural immune response to tumor development while avoiding toxic effects associated with traditional cytotoxic chemotherapy. However, immunotherapies have been associated with unique toxic effects similar to autoimmune disorders known as immune-related adverse events (irAEs). 4.2% of immunotherapy-treated cancer patients reportedly developed neurological irAEs. In this review, different immunotherapies were studied, including ICIs and mechanism-specific novel therapies, in order to determine a combination therapy to …

Protein Prenylation In The Moss Physcomitrium Patens, Zayna H. Qaissi, Anam F. Ahmed, Katherine V. Brown, Mark P. Running Jan 2021

Protein Prenylation In The Moss Physcomitrium Patens, Zayna H. Qaissi, Anam F. Ahmed, Katherine V. Brown, Mark P. Running

Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase

Protein prenylation is the addition of a 15 or 20 carbon lipid to a cysteine near carboxyl terminus of target proteins. Prenylation increases hydrophobicity, which facilitates membrane associations and protein-protein interaction. Protein prenylation is generally conserved among eukaryotes, and mutations in genes that carry out prenylation are lethal in animals and yeast. In plants prenylation mutations are not always lethal, but they do affect development, disease resistance, biofuel production, and drought response, among other processes of agricultural interest. To understand the evolutionary and developmental implications of plant protein prenylation, we used the sequenced, annotated, and translated genome of the moss …
