Examining Experience, Role, And Lgbtq Identity In Department Chairs, Ashton B. Clouse Jan 2021

Examining Experience, Role, And Lgbtq Identity In Department Chairs, Ashton B. Clouse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

LGBTQ rights have progressed tremendously in recent times, not long ago LGBTQ individuals could be arrested simply for being themselves. Though many rights have been won, the fight for equity continues. This is especially true in the field of education, many think of higher education as a pathway to equity, but in reality it can serve to solidify societal inequities. Campus climate studies of LGBTQ faculty members in higher education show that climate is most impactful at the departmental level (Nichols & Scott, 2005), others highlight the importance of department chairs in fostering climate within their departments (Bystydzienski et al., …

Evaluating Nuclear Energy As A Component Of U.S. Energy Innovation Systems, Bryce Jones Jan 2021

Evaluating Nuclear Energy As A Component Of U.S. Energy Innovation Systems, Bryce Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nuclear energy is contentious in policy discussions that evaluate its role in the current U.S. clean energy innovation system. OECD nations, on average, have begun to reduce their dependence on nuclear energy. However, the United States has remained invested in its nuclear energy infrastructure and the role that it plays within federal research and development. This thesis examines the Neo-Schumpeterian perspective and the National Innovation System’s approach, the economic history of nuclear energy in the United States, and given insight from these factors, discusses the current role of nuclear energy in the U.S. energy innovation system. The objective is to …

Adding A Dimension: Illustrating Triple Consciousness Theory In The African American Literary Tradition, Asia Wesley Jan 2021

Adding A Dimension: Illustrating Triple Consciousness Theory In The African American Literary Tradition, Asia Wesley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the way gender expands and nuances W.E.B. DuBois’s double consciousness theory, which depicts the African American identity as a doubleness that is both American and Negro. Black feminist criticism’s nuanced formulation of DuBois’s formulation of Black identity allows the African American literary tradition to be seen through three lenses: an American, a Negro, and an African American’s gender identity. In order to further contemporize the pre-existing Black feminist criticism, I examine Hurston, Brooks, and Morrison in the three time periods that followed DuBois’s coining of double consciousness theory: (1) the Harlem Renaissance, (2) the Civil Rights Movement …

Understanding Pathophysiology Of Nonsyndromic Autism By Examining And Extrapolating From Syndromic Variants, Alexander Labkowsky Jan 2021

Understanding Pathophysiology Of Nonsyndromic Autism By Examining And Extrapolating From Syndromic Variants, Alexander Labkowsky

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a broad, heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder encompassing a range of presentation and severity. The common characteristics include communication deficits, impaired social skills, dependency on routine, sensitivity to environmental change, and stereotyped behavior (DSM-5, 2013). When ASD is accompanied by a host of other symptoms it is often referred to as syndromic autism. Syndromic autism is usually severe and can usually be traced to deletions or duplications on a specific gene. These monogenic disorders are by definition easier to diagnose and are good candidates for study since specific biological markers can be assessed and tracked. There have …

Characterization Of Mas1-86 Activity In Malaria Parasites, Leah A. Keim, Tessa M. Firestone, Emily K. Bremers, Sukhithasri Vijayrajratnam, Mohamed A. Seleem, Martin Conda-Sheridan, Caroline L. Ng

Posters: 2021 Summer Undergraduate Research Program

In 2019, ~ 229 million malaria cases were reported globally, causing 409,000 deaths. Malaria is caused by the Plasmodium parasite with cyclical infection in human and Anopheles mosquito host. P. falciparum is the most common species, causing approximately 75% of malaria. Asexual, blood stage parasites cause malaria symptoms. The lifecycle begins with merozoites that invade red blood cells and they develop into rings, then trophozoite, and mature into schizonts. Artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) is the first-line treatment for uncomplicated falciparum malaria. Resistance to all artemisinin (ART) is a widespread problem, which is conferred by point mutations in Kelch 13. The …

The Role Of Immunotherapy In Treating High-Risk Neuroblastoma, Mollie Raczkowski Jan 2021

The Role Of Immunotherapy In Treating High-Risk Neuroblastoma, Mollie Raczkowski

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Neuroblastoma originates from the cells in the neural crest. High-risk neuroblastoma, patients have poor outcomes even with the multi-step treatment plans, including immunotherapy maintenance treatment. Researchers in developmental biology search for unique antigens in neuroblastoma cells to utilize monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). Currently, GD2 is the most effective antigen that scientists have isolated in the tumor; these anti-GD2 mAbs are administered in the forms of Dinutuximab or Dinutuximab beta to attack the tumor. Monoclonal antibodies are currently administered in neuroblastoma instead of CAR T (that has seen success in curing different types of leukemias) due to the heterogeneity of this tumor. …

Etiology And Associations Of Oral And Oropharyngeal Cancer, Aron Yaghar

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

This research paper discusses oral cavity cancer, which is one of the 11th most common cancers in the world. According to newer research, some important possible causes include smokeless tobacco, marijuana, and citrus fruits. Some research attributes it to one’s genetic makeup and include exposure to Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and diagnosis of Diabetes mellitus, all in conjunction with one’s age. In this research paper, each of these factors are discussed in depth, and their association with this illness is considered and debated. Review of the literature reveals that the high concentrations of nicotine found in smokeless tobacco products is deleterious …

Regulated Apoptosis In C. Elegans Development, Nathan Lifton

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

REGULATED APOPTOSIS IN CAENORHABDITIS ELEGANS DEVELOPMENT.Nathan Lifton, Alison Kochersberger, and Marc Hammarlund, Department of Genetics, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. We have used chromosome engineering in C. elegans to develop a model animal in which cells normally undergoing developmental programmed cell death (DPCD) survive and are visibly marked. This system uses three elements: The first is a mutation in the apoptosis activator, ced-3, that drives developmental programmed cell death, such that cells normally killed by DPCD survive. The second is a cassette in which the gene encoding the bacterial enzyme Cre recombinase is expressed under transcriptional control …

Publications

Interactions between wind and trees control energy exchanges between the atmosphere and forest canopies. This energy exchange can lead to the widespread damage of trees, and wind is a key disturbance agent in many of the world's forests. However, most research on this topic has focused on conifer plantations, where risk management is economically important, rather than broadleaf forests, which dominate the forest carbon cycle. This study brings together tree motion time-series data to systematically evaluate the factors influencing tree responses to wind loading, including data from both broadleaf and coniferous trees in forests and open environments.

We found that …

Biomechanical characterization of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) has become commonplace in rupture risk assessment studies. However, its translation to the clinic has been greatly limited due to the complexity associated with its tools and their implementation. The unattainability of patient-specific tissue properties leads to the use of generalized population-averaged material models in finite element analyses, which adds a degree of uncertainty to the wall mechanics quantification. In addition, computational fluid dynamics modeling of AAA typically lacks the patient-specific inflow and outflow boundary conditions that should be obtained by non-standard of care clinical imaging. An alternative approach for analyzing AAA flow …

Stereotypes, Sexism And Superhuman Faculty, Teneille R. Brown Jan 2021

Stereotypes, Sexism And Superhuman Faculty, Teneille R. Brown

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

This symposium article explores how law professors with caretaking responsibilities struggled so greatly during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Because legal academia prioritizes masculine ideals of competence over warmth, faculty were expected to suppress their emotions and mental health needs in order to maintain the appearance of competence. While students were allowed to be seen as vulnerable individuals needing accommodations, we did not extend this same compassion to our faculty colleagues. To explain why the treatment was so disparate, I incorporated existing research on the stereotype content model (SCM) and psychological theories of dehumanization. These theories help to …

Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Grp94 Selective Inhibitors, Zach Priebe, Kyler Pugh, Brian S. J. Blagg Jan 2021

Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Grp94 Selective Inhibitors, Zach Priebe, Kyler Pugh, Brian S. J. Blagg

Summer Research

Grp94 is one of four chaperones which belong to the Heat Shock Protein 90 (Hsp90) family. Hsp90 isoforms exist as homodimers and assist in the folding and maturation of over 400 client proteins. These proteins are highly sought-after therapeutic targets as they are known to chaperone misfolded proteins involved in various signaling pathways. During the protein folding cycle, ATP binds to the N-Terminal domain of Hsp90, which allows nascent polypeptides to undergo maturation. To prevent the folding and maturation of oncogenic proteins, researchers developed N-terminal inhibitors to prevent ATP binding. Unfortunately, these inhibitors (termed pan-inhibitors) were not isoform selective, which …

The Influences Of Green Infrastructure On Levels Of Somatic And Male-Specific Coliphages And E. Coli At Shadyside Park, Oula Salih, Sara Gibes, Kelly Dubois

Summer Research

During the summer of 2019, Plaster Creek Stewards executed a green infrastructure project that proceeded with development of a floodplain at Shadyside park with the purpose to reduce the flow rate of Plaster Creek and prevent the occurrence of erosion from both heavy rainfall and flooding¹. In addition, microbial contamination (both bacterial and viral) has a significant impact on bodies of water. Viral coliphages, specifically male-specific and somatic phages, are used as indicators of fecal contamination in water and can be used to identify sources of contamination². A case study was conducted to evaluate how this floodplain influenced the microbial …

Conservation Easements As A Tool For Nature Protection, William Snape Iii Jan 2021

Conservation Easements As A Tool For Nature Protection, William Snape Iii

PEEL Faculty Scholarship

The conflict between proponents of land and water conservation and those promoting traditional, natural-resource intensive development is a well-known story. One side sees the economic development of land and water as a fundamental right, while the other side values preservation of wildlife, ecosystems, and biological diversity as at least an equal right. This article examines the intersection of these two viewpoints: the active conservation of land and water resources on private land through conservation easements that extend the long- standing property law notion of easements to the modern situation in which a landowner commits to maintain and conserve the property …

Payment For Ecosystem Services: Rewarding The Landowner Who Conserves The Public Good, Steven H. Bullard, Sarah Fuller

Faculty Publications

It has been said that money doesn’t grow on trees, but any forest landowner or manager will tell you that’s not exactly true— especially when observing a harvesting operation or managing dues from your hunting lease. While timber production and recreation are the most frequently monetized services provided by forests, what about the other goods and services they provide on a continuing basis? Are you or other forest landowners in your area being monetarily rewarded for soil stability, flood control, water filtration, air quality, and the other critical services—known as ecosystem services—provided by forests?

A Systematic Review Of Brainstem Contributions To Autism Spectrum Disorder, Ala Seif, Carly Shea, Susanne Schmid, Ryan A Stevenson Jan 2021

A Systematic Review Of Brainstem Contributions To Autism Spectrum Disorder, Ala Seif, Carly Shea, Susanne Schmid, Ryan A Stevenson

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects one in 66 children in Canada. The contributions of changes in the cortex and cerebellum to autism have been studied for decades. However, our understanding of brainstem contributions has only started to emerge more recently. Disruptions of sensory processing, startle response, sensory filtering, sensorimotor gating, multisensory integration and sleep are all features of ASD and are processes in which the brainstem is involved. In addition, preliminary research into brainstem contribution emphasizes the importance of the developmental timeline rather than just the mature brainstem. Therefore, the purpose of this systematic review …
