BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Diffusion tensor imaging analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) has emerged as a promising noninvasive method for evaluating water motion that may reflect glymphatic system function. However, the reliability of DTI-ALPS measurements across different region-of-interest (ROI) selection methods remains underinvestigated. This study aimed to assess the interrater reliability among three neuroradiologists in native space and compare DTI-ALPS indices derived from ROIs placed in subjects' native space versus standardized Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) space.
METHODS: DTI-ALPS indices from 16 healthy subjects were calculated from both left and right hemispheres using two ROI placement approaches: (1) native space ROIs …

Elevated expression of prothymosin α (ProT) is frequently observed in cancers, but the underlying molecular mechanism remains poorly understood. Here, we report the clinical relevance of ProT expression and its correlation with lung cancer progression. We have shown that ProT was highly expressed in early-stage lung cancer, exhibiting nuclear localization; on the contrary, a loss of nuclear ProT expression was detected in late-stage tumor specimens. Furthermore, the expression of nuclear ProT impaired lung cancer cell migration, suppressed TGF-β-induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-associated transcription factor expression, and inhibited in vivo tumor metastasis. The suppressive effect of ProT was further found to trigger …
Effect Of Short-Chain Polymer Binders On The Mechanical And Electrochemical Performance Of Silicon Anodes, Fei Sun, L. Zurita-Garcia, Dean R. Wheeler
Effect Of Short-Chain Polymer Binders On The Mechanical And Electrochemical Performance Of Silicon Anodes, Fei Sun, L. Zurita-Garcia, Dean R. Wheeler
Faculty Publications
Polymer binders are crucial components in providing both mechanical support and chemical stability to the structure of porous Li-ion electrodes. Particularly in silicon anodes, the active material undergoes substantial volume expansion of up to 275%. Due to the mechanical constraint of the current collector, these silicon materials tend to expand in the normal direction while exhibiting substantial particle rearrangement and plastic deformation. Conventional rigid binders such as polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polyimide (PI), while providing satisfactory initial capacity, do not eliminate diminished long-term performance. Our research attempts to develop binder formulations that can accommodate sufficient flexibility for the substantial volume …
Self-Colonization In American Law: The Internet And Personal Information Example, Daniel J.H. Greenwood
Self-Colonization In American Law: The Internet And Personal Information Example, Daniel J.H. Greenwood
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Since the Reagan era, American economic policy has amounted to self-colonization. Democratic majorities have consistently supported legal regimes that have enabled corporations to extract the lion’s share of the gains from trade from the public. For example, they have supported a corporate law regime that denies the public democratic control over the behavior of corporations and instead gives dictatorial powers to shareholders and managers. The Internet has made it even easier for firms to extract surpluses from consumers through surveillance and algorithmic pricing. One small contribution toward a project of decolonizing the public would be for consumers to obtain a …

Problem
The SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic revealed both the systemic vulnerabilities of our healthcare system as well as the importance of timely, localized data for informing public health responses. Traditional testing approaches were essential but often failed to capture the full extent of viral spread, especially in those with mild or asymptomatic conditions that relied on at home testing. This underreporting hindered effective allocation of resources and made developing effective intervention strategies difficult. We also realized the potential for wastewater surveillance to be applied to tracking antimicrobial resistance gene markers. Taken together, this approach should have important implications for improving public …

An Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Beef Cattle Grazing Activity Traits And Conception Methods During The Breeding Season, Jason Dubowsky
Master's Theses
Efficient use of native rangelands and improved reproductive success are primary objectives in beef cattle production. Grazing behavior during the breeding season may be influenced by pasture characteristics, including size and water availability, as well as physiological differences due to reproductive status. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between grazing activity and conception method in crossbred Angus cows over a 2-year period. The study was conducted during the winter months (December – February) on the Central Coast of California with a mean temperate of 53 degrees Fahrenheit. Cows (n = 76) were blocked by age and then randomly assigned …

Introduction
From structural, anatomical, and functional perspectives, components of the thoracoabdominal region are heterogeneous and physiologically and functionally different. Although their tolerances to injury are expected to be different, the current Roma Plastilina No. 1 clay penetration criterion for behind armor blunt trauma (BABT) is not specific to the body region. It is important to develop regional injury criteria to ensure its specificity. The objective of the study is to conduct impact tests on the lung region using a live animal model and develop injury risk curves using velocity and deflection metrics via parametric survival analysis.

The content in introductory science courses has often been criticized as “miles wide and inches deep”. In general chemistry, several revisions have focused on framing around a set of core or anchoring concepts, and we recently adapted the anchoring concepts content map (ACCM) of the American Chemical Society (ACS) to develop an anchoring concept-based curriculum for our general chemistry courses. In this article, we describe efforts to connect this curriculum with laboratory learning using Gowin’s theory of learning and the associated knowledge Vee heuristic. Within this framework, the laboratories themselves become events connecting the conceptual and methodological domains, …

This article evaluates the Environmental Protection and Management Law (UUPPLH) as amended by the Omnibus Law on Job Creation (UUPPLH-Ciptaker) and its implementing regulations. The evaluation uses the normative framework of the principle of non-regression to assess whether the provisions of the UUPPLH-Ciptaker and its implementing regulations represent a setback compared to the legal conditions prior to the enactment of the Omnibus Law. This paper argues that the changes introduced by the UUPPLH-Ciptaker indicate several regressions in Indonesia’s environmental law, particularly in the following areas: a) the weakening of provisions on Environmental Impact Assessment (AMDAL) and Environmental Management and Monitoring …

Fatty acid β-oxidation is a central catabolic pathway with broad health implications. However, various fatty acids, including 4-hydroxy acids (4-HAs), are largely incompatible with β-oxidation machinery before being modified. Here we reveal that two atypical acyl-CoA dehydrogenases, ACAD10 and ACAD11, drive 4-HA catabolism in mice. Unlike other ACADs, ACAD10 and ACAD11 feature kinase domains that phosphorylate the 4-hydroxy position as a requisite step in converting 4-hydroxyacyl-CoAs into conventional 2-enoyl-CoAs. Through cryo-electron microscopy and molecular modeling, we identified an atypical dehydrogenase binding pocket capable of accommodating this phosphorylated intermediate. We further show that ACAD10 is mitochondrial and necessary for catabolizing shorter-chain …

BACKGROUND: High tumor budding and elevated systemic inflammation are adverse prognostic indicators in colorectal cancer. Its underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. It is unclear whether systemic inflammation, angiogenesis, and cell-to-cell adhesion influence tumor budding.
METHODS: We investigated n = 132 stage I-III colorectal cancer patients recruited at Huntsman Cancer Institute enrolled in the ColoCare Study. Tumor budding was evaluated using an evidence-based scoring system, and patient sera were analyzed for nine circulating biomarkers using the Meso Scale Discovery platform. We examined associations between biomarkers and tumor budding using multivariable linear regression models adjusted for age, sex, neoadjuvant treatment, stage, and …

Acute Compartment Syndrome (ACS) is a serious medical condition that arises from increased pressure within osteofascial compartments, leading to impaired blood flow and potential tissue damage. Early and accurate diagnosis is critical for preventing permanent damage. Current methods rely largely on qualitative assessments with limited accuracy, and those that exploit invasive pressure measurements often prove inadequate. Herein, a soft materials-based multimodal sensor probe is introduced, as well as the mechanical and thermal influences to monitor intra-compartmental pressure, tissue oxygen saturation (StO

Efficient lymph flow is ensured by lymphatic valves (LVs). The mechanisms that regulate LV development are incompletely understood. Here, we show that the deletion of the GPCR sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor-1 (S1PR1) from lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) results in fewer LVs. Interestingly, LVs that remained in the terminal ileum-draining lymphatic vessels were specifically dysfunctional. Furthermore, tertiary lymphoid organs (TLOs) formed in the terminal ileum of the mutant mice. TLOs in this location are associated with ileitis in humans and mice. However, mice lacking S1PR1 did not develop obvious characteristics of ileitis. Mechanistically, S1PR1 regulates shear stress signaling and the expression of …

Coupling Category Alignment For Graph Domain Adaptation, Nan Yin, Xiao Teng, Zhiguang Cao, Mengzhu Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Graph domain adaptation (GDA), which transfers knowledge from a labeled source domain to an unlabeled target graph domain, attracts considerable attention in numerous fields. However, existing methods commonly employ message-passing neural networks (MPNNs) to learn domain-invariant representations by aligning the entire domain distribution, inadvertently neglecting category-level distribution alignment and potentially causing category confusion. To address the problem, we propose an effective framework named Coupling Category Alignment (CoCA) for GDA, which effectively addresses the category alignment issue with theoretical guarantees. CoCA incorporates a graph convolutional network branch and a graph kernel network branch, which explore graph topology in implicit and explicit …

The article by Quilcaille and colleagues makes a convincing case that heatwaves around the world have been worsened by the combustion of fossil fuels produced mostly by a limited number of companies. This is the latest in a series of climate-attribution studies5 that are demonstrating — with increasing precision — the link between greenhouse-gas emissions and climate impacts.
