Diagnostic Radiology Articles

Artificial intelligence has recently gained popularity across different medical fields to aid in the detection of diseases based on pathology samples or medical imaging findings. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a key assessment tool for patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). The role of machine learning and artificial intelligence to increase detection of brain abnormalities in TLE remains inconclusive. We used support vector machine (SV) and deep learning (DL) models based on region of interest (ROI-based) structural (n = 336) and diffusion (n = 863) brain MRI data from patients with TLE with ("lesional") and without ("non-lesional") radiographic features …

Toxic Masculinity: An Outcome Of Colonialism And Its Effects On The Latinx/Chicanx Lgbtq+ Community, Monica Martinez Jul 2021

Toxic Masculinity: An Outcome Of Colonialism And Its Effects On The Latinx/Chicanx Lgbtq+ Community, Monica Martinez

McNair Research Journal SJSU

This research examines masculinity in the Latinx community within the U.S. Much of the theory behind masculinity involves discussing toxic masculinity and machismo. To do this, I look at film, poetry, and literature to discuss how toxic masculinity affects Queer Latinxs. Although this research focuses on fictional characters and the analysis of fictional works, these characters’ stories do not fall far from current LGBTQ+ Latinxs who may be experiencing the same issues. I examine La Mission, Mosquita y Mari, Gun Hill Road, “I am Joaquin,” “La Loca de la Raza Cosmica,” Rain God, and What Night …

Ethnic Studies As A Vehicle Of Empowerment: Students Of Color And Their Educational Journey, Briana Anguiano

McNair Research Journal SJSU

Students from marginalized communities often enter classrooms where their cultural heritage is not reflected within the classroom. As a result of being in an environment where one’s culture and experiences are overlooked, students can become disengaged in the classroom. This project investigates the ways in which Ethnic Studies courses hold social promise to inspire better academic performance for high school students. Therefore, the goal of this study is to document, describe, analyze, and advocate for the implementation of ethnic studies scholarship into the California high school curricula. My literature review will ask and answer the following research question: To what …

The extent and effects associated with decades of plastic and microplastic pollution are the focus of current scientific studies, and methodology to quantify and identify the presence of microplastics in both land and aquatic environments. The purpose of this study is to determine the best conditions to degrade microplastics effectively. This was determined through the use of several forms of Fungi to observe and report changes in the microplastics, as well as possible changes in the microplastics due to …

Experimental Characterization Of Biological Tissue Mechanics, Nick Evans, Bethany Luke Jul 2021

Experimental Characterization Of Biological Tissue Mechanics, Nick Evans, Bethany Luke

Summer Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

The function of ligaments and tendons is to transmit tensile forces, allowing healthy, bodily motion. However, if improper loading is placed on the tissue, the structures may rupture leading to pain, loss of function, and reduced quality of life. To prevent rupture, loads must remain below the ultimate strength of the tissue, but the maximum stress that the tissue can withstand varies due to several factors such as age, sex, body temperature, loading history, hydration state, and strain rate. These factors can be tested in order to understand how they affect tissue failure risk. Therefore, the objective of our research …

Graduate- And Undergraduate-Student Perceptions Of And Preferences For Teaching Practices In Stem Classrooms, Ngawang Gonsar, Lorelei E. Patrick, Sehoya Cotner

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Despite positive evidence for active learning (AL), lecturing dominates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) higher education. Though instructors acknowledge AL to be valuable, many resist implementing AL techniques, citing an array of barriers including a perceived lack of student buy-in. However, few studies have explored student perceptions of specific AL teaching practices, particularly the perceptions of graduate students. We explored student-reported instructional strategies and student perceptions of and preferences for a variety of teaching practices in graduate and undergraduate classrooms across three STEM colleges at a large, public, research university. We found that both graduate and undergraduate students desired …

Identifying Antimicrobial Phytocompounds To Combat Iss Superbugs, Alexis Dres, Katelyn Shouse, Danielle Orozco-Nunnelly, Jeff Pruet

Summer Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

The isolation, or creation, of novel antimicrobial agents is currently at the forefront of modern healthcare due to the stark decrease in antimicrobial drug development in recent years and due to the increasing rise of superbugs, or microorganisms that are resistant to more than one type of antimicrobial treatment, which are predicted by 2050 to cause 10 million deaths/year. In addition to being a terrestrial cause for concern, antimicrobial resistant microbes are also a threat to the health of the individuals on the International Space Station (ISS). According to recent studies, a diverse population of bacteria and fungi, including several …

Effects Of Environmental Factors On Candida Albicans Morphology: A Focus On Estrogen And Microgravity, Sky Kaur, Anita Coleman, Riquail Gibson, Idalia Zachara, Paige Camp, George Gundelach, Michael Watters, Patrice Bouyer Jul 2021

Effects Of Environmental Factors On Candida Albicans Morphology: A Focus On Estrogen And Microgravity, Sky Kaur, Anita Coleman, Riquail Gibson, Idalia Zachara, Paige Camp, George Gundelach, Michael Watters, Patrice Bouyer

Summer Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

During body invasion, C.albicans change their morphology from yeast to filamentous, but the environmental factors responsible for the change in morphology are not well characterized. During Sepsis, high levels of estrogen (E2) are recorded (~0.1 nM), in addition during spaceflight it has been shown that C.albicans become virulent. In this study, we aimed at characterizing the effect of estrogen and microgravity as environmental factors inducing filamentous growth. In our experiments, we grow C.albicans in minimum liquid media and use brightfield microscopy to observe the morphology. Microgravity is simulated using a clinostat. In an experimental series, we tested the effect of …

Molecular Mechanisms That Establish The Eye-Specific Visual Projection, Elaina Baker, Masaru Nakamoto Jul 2021

Molecular Mechanisms That Establish The Eye-Specific Visual Projection, Elaina Baker, Masaru Nakamoto

Summer Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

Correct functioning of the nervous system critically depends on the formation of the precise neuronal network. For example, axons of retinal ganglion cells from the right and left eyes project to different domains in the lateral geniculate nucleus of the thalamus. This eye-specific retinogeniculate projection provides the anatomical basis for binocular vision. Nell2 (neural epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like-like-2) is an extracellular glycoprotein that is predominately expressed in the nervous system. Our lab has previously shown that Nell2 acts as an inhibitory axon guidance molecule in the establishment of the eye-specific retinogeniculate projection. The current work aims to identify the Nell2 …

The Effects Of Estrogen (E2) On The Filamentous Growth Of Candida Albicans On Assorted Solid Medias, Paige M. Camp, George C. Gundelach, Patrice Bouyer, Michael Watters Jul 2021

The Effects Of Estrogen (E2) On The Filamentous Growth Of Candida Albicans On Assorted Solid Medias, Paige M. Camp, George C. Gundelach, Patrice Bouyer, Michael Watters

Summer Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

Candida albicans is a commensal yeast that lives within the human body. When exposed to specific environmental stimuli (ex. pH, temperature) the fungi will undergo a morphological change from yeast to filamentous (hyphal). Currently, C. albicans is the most prevalent human fungal pathogen, causing both mucosal and systemic infections. This infection, called candidiasis, can endanger high-risk groups, such as immunocompromised patients. While studied extensively, the relationship between C. albicans hyphal growth and estrogen (E2) has yielded mixed results amongst researchers. In our research, we attempted to provide clarity to this relationship by using a variety of solid media and studying …

Improving The Synthesis Of An Unnatural Fluorescent Amino Acid, Taylor A. Gaskill, Esteban B. Kurth Jul 2021

Improving The Synthesis Of An Unnatural Fluorescent Amino Acid, Taylor A. Gaskill, Esteban B. Kurth

Summer Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

The long-term goal of this project is to more efficiently synthesize an unnatural fluorescent amino acid, 3-[7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazol-4-yl]-L-alanine, diazole for short. This fluorescent amino acid can be incorporated into a transparent protein, thus creating a “glow-in-the-dark” protein. Two parallel pathways are being explored to synthesize this diazole amino acid: traditional organic synthesis and biocatalysis. 1H-NMR and LC-MS are being used to analyze the organic route by monitoring the reaction kinetics of the key coupling reaction. The goal of these kinetics experiments is to identify optimal reaction conditions (solvent, temperature, etc.). For the biocatalytic route, the enzyme glutathione S-transferase from the …

The Efficacy Of Brief Attitudinal Familism And Body Image Interventions On Diet And Exercise Self-Monitoring Adherence In Hispanic/Latinx Women, Kelsey Nicole Serier Jul 2021

The Efficacy Of Brief Attitudinal Familism And Body Image Interventions On Diet And Exercise Self-Monitoring Adherence In Hispanic/Latinx Women, Kelsey Nicole Serier

Psychology ETDs

Addressing health disparities in overweight/obesity is a key public health issue. Research supports the efficacy of behavioral weight loss (BWL) interventions, however, adherence to these interventions is often low, which negatively impacts outcomes. The efficacy of BWL interventions is consistently lower among communities of color. Thus, there is a strong need to design and test interventions that are culturally sensitive and address predictors of BWL adherence in diverse groups. Previous research suggests that for Hispanic/Latinx women with overweight/obesity, attitudinal familism (“family comes first”) and body dissatisfaction were informative in predicting BWL adherence. The current study builds on this previous research …

Establishing A Baseline Of Science Communication Skills In An Undergraduate Environmental Science Course, Rashmi Shivni, Christina Cline, Morgan Newport, Shupei Yuan, Heather E. Bergan-Roller

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Background Seminal reports, based on recommendations by educators, scientists, and in collaboration with students, have called for undergraduate curricula to engage students in some of the same practices as scientists—one of which is communicating science with a general, non-scientific audience (SciComm). Unfortunately, very little research has focused on helping students develop these skills. An important early step in creating effective and efficient curricula is understanding what baseline skills students have prior to instruction. Here, we used the Essential Elements for Effective Science Communication (EEES) framework to survey the SciComm skills of students in an environmental science course in which they …
