Precision Medicine And Triple-Negative Breast Cancer: Current Landscape And Future Directions, Fokhrul Hossain, Samarpan Majumder, Justin David, Lucio Miele

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive and heterogeneous subtype of breast cancer associated with a high recurrence and metastasis rate that affects African-American women disproportionately. The recent approval of targeted therapies for small subgroups of TNBC patients by the US ‘Food and Drug Administration’ is a promising development. The advancement of next-generation sequencing, particularly somatic exome panels, has raised hopes for more individualized treatment plans. However, the use of precision medicine for TNBC is a work in progress. This review will discuss the potential benefits and challenges of precision medicine for TNBC. A recent clinical trial designed to target …

A Novel Method For Detecting Wild Boar Presence, Giovanna Massei, Dave P. Cowan, Julia Coats

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Populations of wild boar and feral pigs (Sus scrofa) are increasing in numbers and distribution worldwide, in parallel with their significant environmental and economic impact. Reliable methods to detect the presence of this species are needed for monitoring its natural range expansion and its occurrence in areas where animals have been deliberately or accidentally introduced. The main aim of this study, carried out in English woodlands recently colonized by wild boar, was to assess the effectiveness of a birch wood tar-based compound, to detect the presence of this species in presence/absence surveys. A pilot trial in woodlands where …

Chondrichthyans are apex predators influencing the trophic web through a top-down process thus their depletion will affect the remaining biota. Notwithstanding that, research on chondrichthyans is sparse or data-limited in several biogeographic areas worldwide, including the Levantine Sea. We revise and update the knowledge of chondrichthyans in Cyprus based on a bibliographic review that gains information retrieved from peer-reviewed and grey literature, Global Biodiversity Information Facility (135 records of at least 18 species) and the Ocean Biodiversity Information System (65 records of at least14 species), and the citizen science project Mediterranean Elasmobranchs Citizen Observations (117 records per 23 species). Hardware Acceleration In Image Stitching: Gpu Vs Fpga, Joshua David Edgcombe Jul 2021

Hardware Acceleration In Image Stitching: Gpu Vs Fpga, Joshua David Edgcombe

Masters Theses

Image stitching is a process where two or more images with an overlapping field of view are combined. This process is commonly used to increase the field of view or image quality of a system. While this process is not particularly difficult for modern personal computers, hardware acceleration is often required to achieve real-time performance in low-power image stitching solutions. In this thesis, two separate hardware accelerated image stitching solutions are developed and compared. One solution is accelerated using a Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ ZU3EG FPGA and the other solution is accelerated using an Nvidia RTX 2070 Super GPU. The image …

Data-Driven Discovery Of The Governing Equation For The Transmission Lines System, Yanming Zhang, Lijun Jiang Jul 2021

Data-Driven Discovery Of The Governing Equation For The Transmission Lines System, Yanming Zhang, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Sophisticated structures in the transmission line system introduce the nonuniformity and nonlinearity, which brings the challenge for its characterization and modeling. In this work, a novel data-driven method is proposed to derive the governing partial differential equations of the transmission line. Based on the polynomial interpolation of the spatial-temporal samples of current and voltage, the time and spatial derivatives can be obtained. Then, the ridge regression algorithm is adopted to determine the active spatial differential terms from the candidate functions. Three benchmarks, the uniform and nonuniform transmission line, and a soliton generation system, are provided to demonstrate the validity of …

Intensive Hunting Pressure Changes Local Distribution Of Wild Boar, Jakub Drimaj, Jiří Kamler, Radim Plhal, Přemysl Janata, Zdeněk Adamec, Miloslav Homolka

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Wild boar (Sus scrofa) is now an important species of wild ungulates in Central Europe. Next to conflicts of wild boar with agriculture, the main threat of wild boar presence lies in the expansion of African swine fever across Europe. The regulation of the wild boar population is complicated by the high reproduction rate and intelligent behavior of the species, which limits hunting effectiveness. We analyzed the spatial behavior of wild boar in an environment with a lack of natural food resources. The study area consisted of a forest complex (1,283 ha) with 2 areas. In the “risk” …

Dimeric Allostery Mechanism Of The Plant Circadian Clock Photoreceptor Zeitlupe, Francesco Trozzi, Feng Wang, Gennady M. Verkhivker, Brian D. Zoltowski, Peng Tao

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In Arabidopsis thaliana, the Light-Oxygen-Voltage (LOV) domain containing protein ZEITLUPE (ZTL) integrates light quality, intensity, and duration into regulation of the circadian clock. Recent structural and biochemical studies of ZTL indicate that the protein diverges from other members of the LOV superfamily in its allosteric mechanism, and that the divergent allosteric mechanism hinges upon conservation of two signaling residues G46 and V48 that alter dynamic motions of a Gln residue implicated in signal transduction in all LOV proteins. Here, we delineate the allosteric mechanism of ZTL via an integrated computational approach that employs atomistic simulations of wild type and …

From Exposure To Violence Between Mother And Her Intimate Partner To Suicidality Experienced By Urban Adolescents In Chicago’S Southside, Dexter R. Voisin

Faculty Scholarship

Although the relationship between exposure to intimate partner violence and youths’ psychological and other wellbeing has been widely studied, there is limited research about how youths’ exposure to violence between mother and her intimate partner may be related to youth psychological wellbeing. The study used a sample of urban adolescents in Chicago Southbound to examine whether youths’ exposure to verbal conflict between mother and her intimate partner is related to their suicidality and whether youth depression and aggression may be in between such a linkage. Our findings indicated that one-third of the youth had suicidal thoughts or suicidal/self-hurting attempts. Youths’ …

Periodontal Microbiome Part I: A Literature Review, Carole Chakar, Gabriel Menassa, Roudy Khayat

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

Periodontal disease is one of the most chronic infectious diseases, it is initiated by a reversible inflammatory condition called gingivitis, if untreated, it progresses to an irreversible condition called periodontitis, if not resolved, it leads to tooth loss. Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease, one of these factors is the periodontal microbiome. Consequently, the microbiome is altered according to the host state i.e., health, gingivitis, periodontitis. The microbiome in health is comprised of a variety of microorganisms called health-associated species. They consist of gram-positive cocci and rod with gram-negative species. In this state, the microbiome participates in various physiological functions. While …

Natural History And The "Scientific Discourse Community" Of The Three Zhou Brothers, Jianrong Liao Jul 2021

Natural History And The "Scientific Discourse Community" Of The Three Zhou Brothers, Jianrong Liao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

As the mainstream of modern science, natural history has developed from Foucauldian epistemological discourse to the important discourse of "scientific discourse community," which has become the basis of legitimacy for a new culture and new thought that promoted the New Culture Movement. As the scientific discourse of the three Zhou brothers, natural history influenced Lu Xun's (Zhou Shuren) "saving the nation through science" and "biological truth", Zhou Zuoren's "biological reference" and "naturalization of ethics", as well as Zhou Jianren's "national evolution" and related ideas of new culture. Zhou Brothers' scientific discourse of natural history witnessed the unremitting exploration of Chinese …

Non-Archimedean Models Of Morphogenesis, Wilson A. Zuniga-Galindo Jul 2021

Non-Archimedean Models Of Morphogenesis, Wilson A. Zuniga-Galindo

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We study a p-adic reaction-diffusion system and the associated Turing patterns. We establish an instability criteria and show that the Turing patterns are not classical patterns consisting of alternating domains. Instead of this, a Turing pattern consists of several domains (clusters), each of them supporting a different pattern but with the same parameter values. This type of patterns are typically produced by reaction-diffusion equations on large networks.

Blood-Based Biomarkers For Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Heather M. Wilkins, Mazen M. Dimachkie, Abdulbaki Agbas

Faculty and Staff Publications

Early detection of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is critical for better therapeutic outcomes. The median time from symptom onset to diagnosis of ALS is 11 months, with a range of 6-21 months. Given that the median life expectancy is three years, it is important to shorten the diagnostic journey, initiate therapies promptly, and facilitate clinical research participation. Biomarkers may be the key to enhancing early diagnosis, tracking disease progression, and testing target engagement of promising therapeutics. Clinically valid biomarkers for ALS are currently lacking, and research has been ongoing to identify appropriate biomarkers. Ideal biomarkers should be minimally invasive, such …

PrimPol is the second primase in human cells, the first with the ability to start DNA chains with dNTPs. PrimPol contributes to DNA damage tolerance by restarting DNA synthesis beyond stalling lesions, acting as a TLS primase. Multiple alignment of eukaryotic PrimPols allowed us to identify a highly conserved motif, WxxY near the invariant motif A, which contains two active site metal ligands in all members of the archeo-eukaryotic primase (AEP) superfamily. In vivo and in vitro analysis of single variants of the WFYY motif of human PrimPol demonstrated that the invariant Trp87 and Tyr90 residues are essential …
