Predictors Of Courage In Adolescents, Yea Won Park Jan 2021

Predictors Of Courage In Adolescents, Yea Won Park

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Adolescence can be a difficult phase of life. Adolescents may experience drastic physical, psychological, social changes, which can lead to uncertainty and anxiety. Courage is an important construct to study because it could help adolescents carry out tasks, work more effectively, and pursue goals (Koerner, 2014). Few studies have investigated predictors of general courage (e.g., personality; Muris et al., 2009), and moral courage (i.e., parenting, gender; Bronstein et al., 2009). The present study examined intrapersonal and interpersonal predictors (Time 1) of courage (Time 3) among adolescents, as well as potential mediating and moderating mechanisms. Data were collected from a larger …

Deep Fingerprint Matching From Contactless To Contact Fingerprints For Increased Interoperability, Alexander James Wilson Jan 2021

Deep Fingerprint Matching From Contactless To Contact Fingerprints For Increased Interoperability, Alexander James Wilson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Contactless fingerprint matching is a common form of biometric security today. Most smartphones and associated apps now let users opt into using this form of biometric security. However, it’s difficult to match a finger-photo to a fingerprint because of perspective distortion occurring at the edges of the finger-photo, so direct matching using conventional methods will not be as accurate due to a lack of sufficient matching minutiae points. To address this issue, we propose a deep model, Perspective Distortion Rectification Model (PDRM), to estimate the fingerprint correspondence for finger-photo images in order to recover more minutiae points. Not only do …

Outpatient Appointment Scheduling Study: Utilization Projection, No-Show Prediction, And Capacity Allocation, Fangzheng Yuan Jan 2021

Outpatient Appointment Scheduling Study: Utilization Projection, No-Show Prediction, And Capacity Allocation, Fangzheng Yuan

Transportation Logistics and Finance

Long waiting times could result in many negative effects, such as low capacity utilization, high patient no-show rates, and loss of social benefits, which will also lead to a waste of public resources. Therefore, to better utilize healthcare resources and serve the community, my dissertation will focus on three objectives: To study the relationship between appointment utilization and indirect waiting time (IWT); to predict the patient’s no-shows without profiling them; to develop an optimization model for appointment capacity allocation. To achieve these objectives, multiple models and approaches have been developed in this dissertation. For the first model, two mixture distribution …

Gas Phase Reactions Of Cyclopentadiene With Ch And Oh Radicals, Kacee Lynn Caster Jan 2021

Gas Phase Reactions Of Cyclopentadiene With Ch And Oh Radicals, Kacee Lynn Caster

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and carbon-based nanoparticles in combustion environments is driven by the pyrolysis and oxidation of abundant fuel molecules. The subsequent growth of these pyrolytic byproducts is then propagated by reactions with small free radical species like OH, CH, O atoms, and C2H. Cyclopentadiene (C5H6) is a significant five-member combustion intermediate that has been detected in many high temperature reactions, such as in the pyrolysis of jet fuels like JP-10. Experimental and theoretical investigations in the reactions of cyclopentadiene with these small free radical species are necessary towards understanding …

The Impact Of Unsaturated Zone Thickness On The Severity Of Saltwater Intrusion In Coastal Aquifers From Overtopping, Dennis Jesse Carpinello Jan 2021

The Impact Of Unsaturated Zone Thickness On The Severity Of Saltwater Intrusion In Coastal Aquifers From Overtopping, Dennis Jesse Carpinello

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Storm-surge inundation and wave overwash, collectively overtopping, causes the land surface to be inundated with seawater, resulting in vertical infiltration of saline waters into underlying coastal aquifers, which can have severe consequences on freshwater resources. Unsaturated zone thickness plays an important role in determining the severity of saltwater contamination resulting from an overtopping event. This study uses numerical modeling to investigate vertical saltwater infiltration and salinization, and the subsequent aquifer recovery to overtopping events for coastal aquifers with different unsaturated zone thicknesses. Groundwater models were developed using the numerical code SUTRA to solve saturated-unsaturated, density-dependent groundwater flow and solute …

Uncertainty Estimation For Stereo Visual Odometry, Derek W. Ross Jan 2021

Uncertainty Estimation For Stereo Visual Odometry, Derek W. Ross

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Over the past few decades, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been increasingly popular for use in locations that are lacking, or have unreliable global navigation satellite system (GNSS) availability. One of the more popular localization techniques for quadrotors is the use of visual odometry (VO) through monocular, RGB-D, or stereo cameras. With primary applications in the context of Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM) and indoor navigation, VO is largely used in combination with other sensors through Bayesian filters, namely Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) or Particle Filter. This work investigates the accuracy of two standard covariance estimation techniques for a feature-based …

Employing Exoglycosidase And Transferase Enzymes In Capillary Nanogel Electrophoresis For The Determination Of N-Glycan Linkages And Enzyme Michaelis-Menten Constants., Lloyd Bwanali Jan 2021

Employing Exoglycosidase And Transferase Enzymes In Capillary Nanogel Electrophoresis For The Determination Of N-Glycan Linkages And Enzyme Michaelis-Menten Constants., Lloyd Bwanali

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As a post translational modification protein glycosylation plays a crucial role in protein signaling, binding, kinetics and folding. In disease diagnosis and prognosis, monitoring glycosylation has been identified as a biomarker. Sialylation and sialic acid linkage in N-glycans are markers of cancers including liver, pancreatic and kidney cancer. Quantification of sialic acid linkage is analytically challenging because of the diverse linkages and the presence of heterogenous branching. A capillary electrophoresis method is reported that integrates a unique combination of enzymes and lectins to modify sialylated asparagine-linked glycans (N-glycans) in real time in the capillary so that N-glycan structures containing α2–6-linked …

Three Essays In Applied Urban Economics, Alexander Cardazzi Jan 2021

Three Essays In Applied Urban Economics, Alexander Cardazzi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The first chapter examines the effect of policing strategies on housing prices. Crime has been shown to negatively affect housing values. However, there is not much empirical evidence documenting the amenity value of how people are policed. Stop & Frisk was a particularly salient policing tactic employed in New York City until a judge ruled it to be unconstitutional. This chapter uses exogenous variation in Stop & Frisk behavior resulting from landmark events in a federal class action lawsuit as well as exposure to Operation Impact, a high intensity policing strategy, to explain variation in property sales. Results indicate a …

Analysis On Combined Heat And Power, And Combined Heat And Power Hybrid Systems For Unconventional Drilling Operations, Diego G. Dranuta Ferrer Jan 2021

Analysis On Combined Heat And Power, And Combined Heat And Power Hybrid Systems For Unconventional Drilling Operations, Diego G. Dranuta Ferrer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The United States (U.S.) has experienced a natural gas “boom” due to the development of unconventional shale plays, but well development is energy intensive. Operations use electric drilling rigs typically powered by either three high-horsepower diesel engines (HHPDE) or three dedicated natural gas engines (DNGE) and associated generators. From a first law analysis, HHPDEs peak at 42% efficiency at full load, while DNGE peak at about 30%. Most of the fuel energy is lost as heat rejected by the exhaust and radiators. Concurrently, during cold seasons rigs utilize boilers to provide steam throughout the rig to prevent freezing and provide …

Hypothesis Testing On Time Series Driven By Underlying Lévy Processes, With Machine Learning Applications, Michael Roberts Jan 2021

Hypothesis Testing On Time Series Driven By Underlying Lévy Processes, With Machine Learning Applications, Michael Roberts

Mathematics

In this dissertation, we study the testing of hypotheses on streams of observations that are driven by Lévy processes. This is applicable for sequential decision making on the state of two-sensor systems. In one case, each sensor receives or does not receive a signal obstructed by noise. In another, each sensor receives data driven by Lévy processes with large or small jumps. In either case, these give rise to four possible outcomes for the hypotheses. Infinitesimal generators are presented and analyzed. Bounds for likelihood functions in terms of super-solutions} and sub-solutions are computed. As an application, we study a change …

Recovery Of Phosphorus From Florida Phosphatic Waste Clay, Amir Eskanlou Jan 2021

Recovery Of Phosphorus From Florida Phosphatic Waste Clay, Amir Eskanlou

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This MS thesis examines the recovery of phosphorus (P) from Florida waste clay (WC). A comprehensive literature review revealed that: (i)-The most important values being lost to WC are P and rare earth elements (REEs). For the recovery of these values from WC, two crucial attempts are the removal of extremely fine-sized clays, followed by the recovery of phosphate content, which can pave the path for the recovery of REEs; (ii)-Any scientific/ technological solution should, at the same time, be economically and environmentally attractive to the industry. As such, moving from mostly chemical separation processes to the primarily physical/ physicochemical …

Emergency Care Skills Preparedness Of Rural Minnesota Nurse Practitioners, Rachel Marie Dehoogh Jan 2021

Emergency Care Skills Preparedness Of Rural Minnesota Nurse Practitioners, Rachel Marie Dehoogh

Nursing

Many rural hospitals rely on family nurse practitioners (FNPs) to provide care in rural health care facilities. With a shortage of medical doctors, FNPs are frequently working independently to fill the need often covering the clinic, hospital, and emergency department. FNPs who work in rural settings need to have comprehensive emergency care education as they are often the only provider available when acute or critically ill patients present to the emergency department. Often, many FNPs working for rural hospitals are required to provide emergency care with little to no emergency care specific education in their curriculum. Providing FNPs with increased …

Assessing Parental Knowledge And Attitudes Towards Human Papillomavirus Vaccination In A Rural Primary Care Clinic, Jessica Benitez Holman Jan 2021

Assessing Parental Knowledge And Attitudes Towards Human Papillomavirus Vaccination In A Rural Primary Care Clinic, Jessica Benitez Holman

Nursing

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide. The complications from HPV can be deadly and yet some of the most dangerous serotypes can be prevented with a vaccine. Unfortunately, HPV vaccine initiation and completion rates remain significantly below that of other adolescent vaccines in North Dakota as well as throughout the United States. Low HPV vaccine uptake may be due to a number of factors including lack of knowledge, misconceptions and myths, and healthcare barriers, such as weak or missed provider recommendation and lack of vaccine availability. This practice improvement project assessed parents’ attitudes, knowledge, and …

Workplace Violence In Healthcare: "Not Just Part Of The Job", Lisa Marie Jostad Jan 2021

Workplace Violence In Healthcare: "Not Just Part Of The Job", Lisa Marie Jostad

Nursing

Workplace violence in healthcare is a widespread issue that many healthcare providers accept as “just part of the job.” According to Occupational and Safety Health Administration, in 2002 to 2013 incidents of serious workplace violence (those requiring days off for the injured worker to recuperate) were 4 times more likely in healthcare than in any other industry (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2017). The aim of this study was to examine the experiences, beliefs, and knowledge among North Dakota nurse practitioners by administering a survey about workplace violence in their practice. Using the data obtained by this survey an educational opportunity …

Screening For Adolescent Depression In A Rural Primary Care Clinic, Hannah Taylor Bailey Jan 2021

Screening For Adolescent Depression In A Rural Primary Care Clinic, Hannah Taylor Bailey

Nursing

In the United States, 11.4% of adolescents between the ages of 12-17 are diagnosed with depression each year (Leslie & Chike-Harris, 2017). Unfortunately, research shows that as many as two in three youth with depression are not identified by their primary care providers and fail to receive any kind of treatment (Zuckerbrot, Cheung, Jensen, Stein, & Laraque, 2018). The burden of depression is high during adolescence, including high rates of recurrence and elevated risk of suicide (Forman-Hoffman & Viswanathan, 2018). According to the CDC, from 2014-2016, North Dakota had a significant overall suicide rate increase of 57% throughout the state. …

Chamber Music Fundamentals And Rehearsal Techniques For Advancing String Students, Gabrielle Padilla Jan 2021

Chamber Music Fundamentals And Rehearsal Techniques For Advancing String Students, Gabrielle Padilla

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Chamber music pedagogy is an area that is crucial to a comprehensive music education. There is no manual when it comes to chamber music rehearsal or coaching techniques. Many of the great quartets have biographies written on them, yet few shed light on how the quartet handled the problem-solving processes used during rehearsal. This could be due to the longstanding tradition of string quartet education which uses a coach or leader who shares their wisdom and techniques, often as they had learned as young chamber musicians. Without this guidance, young quartets (and sometimes coaches) often have few ideas of how …

Modified Firearm Discharge Residue Analysis Utilizing Advanced Analytical Techniques, Complexing Agents, And Quantum Chemical Calculations, William J. Feeney Jan 2021

Modified Firearm Discharge Residue Analysis Utilizing Advanced Analytical Techniques, Complexing Agents, And Quantum Chemical Calculations, William J. Feeney

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The use of gunshot residue (GSR) or firearm discharge residue (FDR) evidence faces some challenges because of instrumental and analytical limitations and the difficulties in evaluating and communicating evidentiary value. For instance, the categorization of GSR based only on elemental analysis of single, spherical particles is becoming insufficient because newer ammunition formulations produce residues with varying particle morphology and composition. Also, one common criticism about GSR practitioners is that their reports focus on the presence or absence of GSR in an item without providing an assessment of the weight of the evidence. Such reports leave the end-used with unanswered questions, …

Polarized Policymaking: The Effect Of Ideological Division On Legislative Outcomes In The United States Congress, Aaron Tyler Mentzer Jan 2021

Polarized Policymaking: The Effect Of Ideological Division On Legislative Outcomes In The United States Congress, Aaron Tyler Mentzer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation examines the effect of political polarization on legislative productivity and policymaking in the United States Congress. As the ideological distance between Republicans and Democrats increases, both parties face pressure to obstruct the legislative process in order to defeat their opponent’s policy proposals. This leads to legislative gridlock and alters the means by which Congress can perform its legislative duties. This theory is not a new one, but this dissertation expands on existing literature in several ways. In Chapter 2 I ask: does polarization limit the types of policy that Congress is able to pass, and is Congress restricted …

Planetary Rover Inertial Navigation Applications: Pseudo Measurements And Wheel Terrain Interactions, Cagri Kilic Jan 2021

Planetary Rover Inertial Navigation Applications: Pseudo Measurements And Wheel Terrain Interactions, Cagri Kilic

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Accurate localization is a critical component of any robotic system. During planetary missions, these systems are often limited by energy sources and slow spacecraft computers. Using proprioceptive localization (e.g., using an inertial measurement unit and wheel encoders) without external aiding is insufficient for accurate localization. This is mainly due to the integrated and unbounded errors of the inertial navigation solutions and the drifted position information from wheel encoders caused by wheel slippage. For this reason, planetary rovers often utilize exteroceptive (e.g., vision-based) sensors. On the one hand, localization with proprioceptive sensors is straightforward, computationally efficient, and continuous. On the other …

Numerical Investigations Of Transient Wind Shear From Passing Vehicles Near A Road Structure (Part I: Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Simulations), Hamid Rahai, Assma Begum Jan 2021

Numerical Investigations Of Transient Wind Shear From Passing Vehicles Near A Road Structure (Part I: Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Simulations), Hamid Rahai, Assma Begum

Mineta Transportation Institute

In this research, the authors performed unsteady numerical simulations of a moving Ahmed body under a freeway overpass at different distances from the bridge columns in order to evaluate transient wind shear and the wind load on these columns. Results have shown that when the vehicle is at 0.75W distance from the bridge columns, an unsteady wind speed of up to 24 m/s is observed at the columns with a pressure coefficient difference of 0.9. Here W is the width of the vehicle. These results indicate with an appropriate system for harnessing these wind energy potentials, significant renewable electric power …
