Paper Courts And Parental Rights: Balancing Access, Agency, And Due Process, Tianna N. Gibbs
Paper Courts And Parental Rights: Balancing Access, Agency, And Due Process, Tianna N. Gibbs
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
Across the country, state legislatures have created out-of-court, form-based processes that replace the adjudicative process in traditional courts. In the family law context, these out-of-court forms allocate fundamental parental rights, principally for unmarried and single parents, who disproportionately have low incomes and are people of color. In most states, instead of presenting their requests to a judge in a courtroom, parents can sign legal forms in a hospital room to establish paternity or at their kitchen table to assign their custodial rights to a third party. When a child is born to an unmarried mother, as 40% of children are, …
The Impact Of Social Media Body Challenges On Youths' Body Image, Kerrie Caitlin Leonard
The Impact Of Social Media Body Challenges On Youths' Body Image, Kerrie Caitlin Leonard
Human Development and Family Science
Body challenges are an unresearched trend where an individual checks if their body can look a certain way to pass the specific challenge (e.g., the A4 paper challenge; seeing if one’s waist is smaller than an 8x11 vertical piece of paper). We asked 147 girls and gender-expansive youth open-ended questions about trying a body challenge, opinions, and feelings towards their body as a result of these challenges. Qualitative analyses revealed that 79.59% of youth have never tried a body challenge. Youth thought body challenges were negative, with themes of toxic, ridiculous, unhealthy, anti-feminist/social commentary, and the need for body positivity. …
Neuromuscular Activation During Balance Testing In Young, Middle-Aged, And Older Adults, Miranda Lea Ripplinger
Neuromuscular Activation During Balance Testing In Young, Middle-Aged, And Older Adults, Miranda Lea Ripplinger
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
Aging results in structural changes that inhibit functional balance with daily activities. The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship of neuromuscular activation of the upper leg to balance and fall risk in the adult population. Eighteen males (32.44yrs ± 14.06) and 32 females (41.88yrs ± 18.07) completed strength and balance assessments with surface electromyography. Results indicated a significant age effect on the Clinical Test of Sensory Integration and Balance score (p = 0.019), and a significant gender effect on knee flexion torque (p < 0.001) and knee extension torque (p < 0.001). Linear regression determined a significant association between reduced muscle coactivation, gender, and age to predict Fall Risk Sway Velocity Index scores (p = 0.010, R2 = .218). Middle-aged adults had worse balance scores, and females demonstrated weaker muscular strength; reduced neuromuscular coactivation, age, and gender predicted 21.8% of the variability in Fall Risk scores.

Some Studies On Reliability Analysis Of Complex Cyber-Physical Systems, Alex Vicente Davila Frias
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
Cyber-physical systems (CPSs), a term coined in 2006 refers to the integration of computation with physical processes. Particularly, modern critical infrastructures are examples of CPSs, like smart electric power grids, intelligent water distribution networks, and intelligent transportation systems. CPSs provide critical services that have great impact in nation’s economy, security, and health. Therefore, reliability is a primary metric. Nevertheless, the study of complex CPSs reliability demands understanding the joint dynamics of physical processes, hardware, software, and networks. In the present research, a series of studies is proposed to contribute to the challenging reliability analysis of CPSs by considering the reliability …

Lorna (a pseudonym) is an 81-year-old African American female who resides in an assisted living facility in a small town in southern Kentucky, where she was born. She has some minor health issues, and her family alleges she has emotional issues going back to childhood. She is mentally competent, and until ten years ago resided independently in the home purchased by her deceased parents. Since leaving this home, Lorna has become increasingly withdrawn from family members and society; she has also lost weight and seems to have declined mentally. This case study used five different assessments to build a profile …
Peer Acceptance And Motivation As Mediators Of The Relationships Between Students' Social Skills And Academics, Shawn Leslie Carlson
Peer Acceptance And Motivation As Mediators Of The Relationships Between Students' Social Skills And Academics, Shawn Leslie Carlson
Human Development and Family Science
Primary goals of early elementary school are to teach children academic knowledge in reading and math. During this time, children also continue to develop their social skills, which can be learned from interactions with their peers. Several studies have shown a positive relationship between children’s social skills and academic achievement; however, the mechanisms through which this relationship occurs is not well known. Two possible mechanisms are peer acceptance and academic motivation. The current study examines the relationship between social skills and academic competencies over time and tests peer acceptance and academic motivation as sequential mediators of the relationship. Participants were …
Generational Cohorts And Search For B2b Service Providers, John Story
Generational Cohorts And Search For B2b Service Providers, John Story
AMTP Proceedings 2021
This study explores differences in B2B search processes of members of three generational cohorts, Millennials, Generation X, and Baby Boomers. When searching for a business-to-business service provider, Millennials were significantly more likely to use an internet search, but there were no significant differences between Generation X and Baby Boomers. Although more likely to use an internet search than previous generations, Millennials were just as likely to use interpersonal information sources. These results provide insights into differentiating marketing communications to effectively reach members of different generations in business-to-business marketing.

Mind The Gap: The Effects Of Shopping Medium On Consumer Food Evaluations And Choice, Ashley M. Thomas
AMTP Proceedings 2021
Mobile grocery shopping is rapidly growing in popularity across the United States. Many retailers are responding by creating their own mobile apps to facilitate this demand. However, it is not yet clear whether consumers’ food evaluations and choices differ when grocery shopping on mobile apps as compared to traditional brick-and-mortar retail store settings. Thus, the purpose of this research is to inform both theory and practice by identifying these potential differences and examining why they may be occurring. Study 1, conducted in a retail behavioral lab, shows that shoppers were able to accurately differentiate between healthy and unhealthy food products …

Choice Architecture And Marketing Pre-Suasion: The Case Of The Motorcycle Industry, Stephen Lemay, Bethany Landis, Dave Mcmahon
AMTP Proceedings 2021
In this analysis, we examine the motorcycle industry in terms of Cialdini’s concept of Pre- Suasion. We use the chapter titles from the book to explore how these concepts could or should help the motorcycle industry adapt to shifts in its markets, shifts that are both demographic and cultural. In the process, we also explore ideas like product gentrification and choice architecture, ideas at the heart of the motorcycle marketing problem. We conclude that motorcycle promotions and messaging lack traction with younger buyers. We close with an extensive list of questions calling for further research.

A hypothetical scenario is presented for consideration as a case study on both delivery logistics cost controls and ethical issues. Set in a regional medical supply company in the fictitious country, Costaguana, the actor needs to first unpack a supply chain issue as related to setting up a system to create cost savings to fund a non-government/non-profit organization. The delivery logistics with an established supplier for the company is explained in detail along with intra- and inter-company logistics’ relationships. Then an ethical issue is presented as related to the newfound savings from shipping for the organization. The case is presented …
Encouraging And Rewarding Customer Loyalty: Key Considerations For Sports Teams, Vassilis Dalakas, Madeleine Tseng, Joanna Melancon
Encouraging And Rewarding Customer Loyalty: Key Considerations For Sports Teams, Vassilis Dalakas, Madeleine Tseng, Joanna Melancon
AMTP Proceedings 2021
Sports is an ideal context to study loyalty because sports fans often transcend simple behavioral and affective loyalty and integrate their commitment to a team into their self-identity. Season ticket packages often serve as loyalty rewards programs, offering tiered benefits and perks to consumers in exchange for their level of patronage. This paper offers insights on the impact of various reward types on consumers’ perception of their relationship with a team. Theoretical foundations and insights from sports marketing professionals suggest that those benefits that are exclusive to a team’s season ticket holders and/or premium seat buyers, as well as social …

Academic models grounded in market efficiency and reputational principles argue that market firms value suffer investors punishment as consequence of international bribery allegations. However, there are indicators of potential mispricing when authorities reveal the details of the allegations. To reconcile this phenomenon, this research theorizes the influence of analysts revised expectations as moderators and/or mediators of the relationship between the reputational and economic penalties, and investors’ response. Findings from 124 documented cases (2007 to 2018) suggest that analysts positively moderate (not mediate) the relationship concerning reputational (not economic) penalties and stock returns in the short-term after the press release (three-day …

Development And Dynamics Of Us Welfare Policy, Liza Gordon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this dissertation I analyze the development of contemporary US welfare policy with special consideration given to the importance of race and gender. In the introductory chapter I outline how the development of the American welfare state has continuously neglected the needs of women and minorities as well as how classist, racist, and sexist appeals have been prevalent throughout US history in relation to welfare policies. The remaining chapters analyze how contemporary welfare policies including the 1996 welfare reforms and state drug-testing for welfare laws carry on these American legacies. In Chapter 1 I examine how the classist, sexist, and …

Automobile Autonomy Vs The Social Impact Of Human Trust, Robert J. Goscicki Ii
Honors
Throughout human history, transportation has had a significant connection to the technology of that age. The evolution of modern transportation from horse drawn buggies to the current automobile can be attributed to a massive advancement in technology. As technology is increasingly evolving, so are the transportation systems. The next step for current transportation systems is the inclusion of autonomous driving, or self-driving automobiles. Researchers like Charlie Hewitt suggest that poor public perception of self-driving vehicles influences consumers to prefer traditional driven automobiles over their autonomous counterparts.1 As the automotive industry keeps moving forward with autonomous technology, they have progressed past …

A Role For Endothelial Tissue-Nonspecific Alkaline Phosphatase In Blood-Tissue Barrier Health And Disease, Allison L. Brichacek
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Sepsis is a disorder that targets the microcirculation with significant effects at blood-tissue barriers such as the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and gut-vascular barrier (GVB). Intestinal barrier dysfunction is thought to be one of the most important contributors to multi-organ dysfunction in sepsis. As a common site of infection, the impaired gut allows the dissemination of bacteria, which exacerbates the disease pathophysiology, and can lead to long-term morbidity and mortality. The mechanisms that influence altered barrier permeability in the GVB in sepsis and other inflammatory disorders are not well understood. Tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNAP) enzyme activity, which has been shown to …
Staying Power: Examining Resistance In West Virginia, Beth Nardella
Staying Power: Examining Resistance In West Virginia, Beth Nardella
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
West Virginia has been plagued with high unemployment rates, high rates of addiction and poverty, and some of the worst health outcomes in the country. Outmigration has been the paradigm for many, but why do some people choose to stay? Numerous scholars have written about outmigration, but there is little information on why people stay. After decades of people leaving, many who remain have made a choice to stay. This choice can be seen as an act of resistance against the problematic discourses surrounding the Appalachian region and the economic disparities found within rural communities. West Virginians are often dependent …

Predictors Of Courage In Adolescents, Yea Won Park
Predictors Of Courage In Adolescents, Yea Won Park
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Adolescence can be a difficult phase of life. Adolescents may experience drastic physical, psychological, social changes, which can lead to uncertainty and anxiety. Courage is an important construct to study because it could help adolescents carry out tasks, work more effectively, and pursue goals (Koerner, 2014). Few studies have investigated predictors of general courage (e.g., personality; Muris et al., 2009), and moral courage (i.e., parenting, gender; Bronstein et al., 2009). The present study examined intrapersonal and interpersonal predictors (Time 1) of courage (Time 3) among adolescents, as well as potential mediating and moderating mechanisms. Data were collected from a larger …
Deep Fingerprint Matching From Contactless To Contact Fingerprints For Increased Interoperability, Alexander James Wilson
Deep Fingerprint Matching From Contactless To Contact Fingerprints For Increased Interoperability, Alexander James Wilson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Contactless fingerprint matching is a common form of biometric security today. Most smartphones and associated apps now let users opt into using this form of biometric security. However, it’s difficult to match a finger-photo to a fingerprint because of perspective distortion occurring at the edges of the finger-photo, so direct matching using conventional methods will not be as accurate due to a lack of sufficient matching minutiae points. To address this issue, we propose a deep model, Perspective Distortion Rectification Model (PDRM), to estimate the fingerprint correspondence for finger-photo images in order to recover more minutiae points. Not only do …

Outpatient Appointment Scheduling Study: Utilization Projection, No-Show Prediction, And Capacity Allocation, Fangzheng Yuan
Transportation Logistics and Finance
Long waiting times could result in many negative effects, such as low capacity utilization, high patient no-show rates, and loss of social benefits, which will also lead to a waste of public resources. Therefore, to better utilize healthcare resources and serve the community, my dissertation will focus on three objectives: To study the relationship between appointment utilization and indirect waiting time (IWT); to predict the patient’s no-shows without profiling them; to develop an optimization model for appointment capacity allocation. To achieve these objectives, multiple models and approaches have been developed in this dissertation. For the first model, two mixture distribution …
Logistics Of North Dakota State Local Food System: An Empirical Study To Measure Local Food Supply And Demand For Regional Food Hub Feasibility Study, Hamad Alqublan
Transportation Logistics and Finance
Because North Dakota (ND) is one of only four states that do not have a food hub, the purpose of the regional food hub feasibility study was to empirically evaluate whether the ND local food system needs a food hub from a supply and demand perspective. The 21st century has shifted American agriculture and rural life. The number of small and mid-sized farms decreases while the number of more significant farms increases. The food hubs concept has become an increasingly popular response to this agricultural problem. Food hubs cover the gap between farmers and markets and add value to the …
