Molecular correlates of cancer patient overall survival (OS) can provide new insights. Here, we systematically cataloged pan-cancer, multi-omic correlates of OS transcending tumor lineage across 11,019 patients, involving multiple cancer types while correcting for cancer-type-intrinsic OS differences. Significant fractions of genes with mRNA associated with OS in pan-cancer analyses showed concordant associations at the levels of DNA copy number alteration or methylation. Pan-cancer gene signatures of T-cell and macrophage tumor infiltrates were associated with better and worse OS, respectively. Pathways implicated by molecular OS associations included metabolism, PI3K/Akt, Wnt, and TGF-beta receptor. Significant fractions of worse OS-associated genes were essential …

Remote sensing-derived evapotranspiration (RSET) products capture the spatiotemporal variations of evapotranspiration (ET) from field to basin scales with unprecedented details. However, their accuracy varies across RSET estimation methods and diverse hydroclimate regions. While ET modeling efforts to account for biophysical processes and controlling parameters have made good progress in recent years, a parallel approach of integrating in-situ ET with RSET could reduce biases in RSET products. Basin water balance ET (WBET) and flux tower ET are widely applied to evaluate RSET accuracy, yet such ET measurements are rarely used for RSET bias corrections, especially for large area applications. To address …

Reliability-Based Design Optimization Using Differential-Algebraic Equations, Saad Abbas Abed, Mona Ghassan, Shaimaa Qais Latef, Hind S. Hassan
Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics
Reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) determines optimal design parameters by incorporating reliability constraints. This paper presents a RBDO approach using differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) for modeling and constraints. DAEs provide an accurate representation of dynamic engineering systems with coupled differential and algebraic equations. However, the nonlinearity and implicit nature of DAEs pose challenges for uncertainty propagation and optimization. This study proposes an efficient RBDO methodology based on stochastic collocation to quantify uncertainty in DAEs. The DAEs are transformed into an explicit ODE system to enable direct uncertainty analysis via sampling. Optimization under reliability constraints is achieved using a sequential approximate programming strategy. …

Non-Animal Methods and 3Rs
In the U.S. and many other countries, oversight committee approval is a common requirement for conducting research and publishing its findings. However, in evaluating whether research aims could have been achieved by methods other than the use of animals, these committees face a challenging task. In the U.S., there is no requirement that committee members have expertise in the research areas under review or in methods that could replace animal use, nor could expertise in such vast technical areas be expected. Consideration of alternatives to painful procedures is not required at all for experiments on animals not covered by the …

But are tariffs really not a good idea? Tariff policy and tariffs are relatively complex subjects. Both need to be better understood to decide whether a country’s current tariff policies and the resultant tariffs are a good idea, a bad idea, or maybe a little bit of both.
It is true that a tariff might increase the price of an …

This systematic review explores the effects of vegetarian diets on the physical and mental well-being of health sciences students, a demographic known for high academic and psychological stress. We conducted a comprehensive search across major databases, adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, and identified 22 relevant studies. Our findings suggest that vegetarian diets are associated with lower incidences of chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease and obesity and promote better cardiovascular and metabolic health outcomes compared to non-vegetarian diets. Notably, vegetarian students could display lower systolic blood pressure and waist circumferences. Contrary to …

Stimuli-responsive polymers (SRPs) have garnered significant attention in recent decades due to their immense potential in biomedical and environmental applications. When these SRPs are grafted onto magnetic nanoparticles, they form multifunctional nanocomposites capable of various complex applications, such as targeted drug delivery, advanced separations, and magnetic resonance imaging. In this study, we employed a one-step hydrothermal method using 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTES) to synthesize APTES-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles (APTES@Fe3O4) featuring reactive terminal amine groups. Subsequently, via two consecutive surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerizations (SI-ATRP), pH- and temperature-responsive polymer blocks were grown from the Fe3O …

Pharmacological Considerations For Healthcare Providers When Caring For Muslim Patients: A Practical Guide, Layla Abubshait, Nissa Tasnim, Taha Cangoz
Einstein Health Papers
Healthcare providers increasingly encounter Muslim patients with unique pharmacological considerations influenced by religious beliefs and practices. Islam, as the world's second-largest religion, includes specific guidelines affecting medication permissibility, particularly regarding alcohol and pork-derived ingredients. This educational guide examines the intersection of Islamic teachings with pharmacotherapy, providing examples of commonly prescribed medications containing alcohol or porcine-derived gelatin from our academic medical center's inpatient and outpatient formulary. We document alcohol content percentages in various medications and suggest possible alternatives as illustrative examples. Most importantly, we present a step-by-step practical framework for using National Drug Code (NDC) numbers and the DailyMed database, enabling …

BACKGROUND: Cholangiocarcinoma, malignancies arising from the intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ducts, has increased in incidence in the United States over the past few decades. The reported incidence of cholangiocarcinomas is high, particularly in specific racial groups such as Asian and Pacific Islander patients. Race also significantly impacts disparities in healthcare utilization and clinical outcomes. Our study focused on the impact of race on admission, clinical outcomes, and disposition of cholangiocarcinoma. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of cholangiocarcinoma-related hospital admissions, using the National Inpatient Sample for the year 2022. Patients were stratified according to race into the following groups: White, …
