Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this study, the total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), in vitro antioxidant capacity and individual phenolic compounds of Juniperus drupacea Labill berry and pekmez (molasses) were determined. Since pekmez was the only edible form of berry, the bioaccessibility of phenolic compounds and the antioxidant capacity of the pekmez were assessed following exposure to simulated gastrointestinal conditions. The phenolic compounds determined in the berry and pekmez were similar, while the pekmez was especially rich in protocatechuic acid, and additionally, the berries were rich catechin and chrysin. Generally, through oral to the intestinal stage of the simulated gastric conditions, …

Responses Of Stomatal Features And Photosynthesis To Porewater N Enrichment And Elevated Atmospheric Co2 In Phragmites Australis, The Common Reed, Julian R. Garrison, Joshua S. Caplan, Vladimir Douhovnikoff, Thomas J. Mozdzer, Barry A. Logan

Biology Faculty Research and Scholarship

PREMISE Biological invasions increasingly threaten native biodiversity and ecosystem services. One notable example is the common reed, Phragmites australis, which aggressively invades North American salt marshes. Elevated atmospheric CO2 and nitrogen pollution enhance its growth and facilitate invasion because P. australis responds more strongly to these enrichments than do native species. We investigated how modifications to stomatal features contribute to strong photosynthetic responses to CO2 and nitrogen enrichment in P. australis by evaluating stomatal shifts under experimental conditions and relating them to maximal stomatal conductance (g(wmax)) and photosynthetic rates.

METHODS Plants were grown in situ in open-top chambers under ambient …

The Utility Of Body Composition Assessment In Nutrition And Clinical Practice: An Overview Of Current Methodology, Clifton J Holmes, Susan B Racette

Open Access Publications

Body composition is a key component for maintaining good general health and longevity. It can be influenced by a variety of factors, including genetics, environment, and lifestyle choices. The assessment of body composition is an essential tool for nutrition specialists to effectively evaluate nutritional status and monitor progression during dietary interventions. As humans age, there is a natural increase in fat mass coupled with a gradual decline in lean mass, specifically in bone and muscle mass. Individuals with a high body fat percentage are at a greater risk of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, several types of cancer, and early …

Cd16+Cd163+ Monocytes Traffic To Sites Of Inflammation During Necrotizing Enterocolitis In Premature Infants, Oluwabunmi O. Olaloye, Misty Good, Et Al

Open Access Publications

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a severe gastrointestinal complication of prematurity. Using suspension and imaging mass cytometry coupled with single-cell RNA sequencing, we demonstrate severe inflammation in patients with NEC. NEC mucosa could be subtyped by an influx of three distinct neutrophil phenotypes (immature, newly emigrated, and aged). Furthermore, CD16+CD163+ monocytes/Mϕ, correlated with newly emigrated neutrophils, were specifically enriched in NEC mucosa, found adjacent to the blood vessels, and increased in circulation of infants with surgical NEC, suggesting trafficking from the periphery to areas of inflammation. NEC-specific monocytes/Mϕ transcribed inflammatory genes, including TREM1, IL1A, IL1B, and calprotectin, and neutrophil recruitment genes …

Sleep-Disordered Breathing In Pregnancy: A Developmental Origin Of Offspring Obesity?, Sarah S Farabi, Linda A Barbour, Teri L Hernandez Jan 2021

Sleep-Disordered Breathing In Pregnancy: A Developmental Origin Of Offspring Obesity?, Sarah S Farabi, Linda A Barbour, Teri L Hernandez

Open Access Publications

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) worsens over pregnancy, and obstructive sleep apnea is associated with serious maternal complications. Intrauterine exposures that provoke insulin resistance (IR), inflammation, or oxidative stress may have long-term offspring health consequences. In obesity, worsening maternal SDB appears to be an exposure that increases the risk for both small- or large-for-gestational-age (SGA, LGA, respectively), suggesting distinct outcomes linked to a common maternal phenotype. The aim of this paper is to systematically review and link data from both mechanistic rodent models and descriptive human studies to characterize the impact of maternal SDB on fetal development. A systematic review of the …

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is responsible for an average of 50.4% and 44.2%of liver disease deaths among males and females respectively. Driven by alcohol misuse, ALD is often reversible by cessation of consumption. However, abstinence programs can have limited success at curtailing abuse, and the loss of life. ALD, therefore, remains a significant clinical challenge. There is a need for effective treatments that prevent or reverse alcohol-induced liver damage to complement or supplant behavioral interventions. Metabolic syndrome, which is disproportionally prevalent in ALD patients, accelerates the progression of ALD and increases liver disease mortality. Current rodent models of ALD unfortunately …

Tensions In Welcoming Lgbt Older Adults: Discourses Of Legitimization And Silence In A Senior Center, Megan C. Mccoy

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

Researchers are actively exploring how historical institutionalized silences contribute to health disparities for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) older adults. Yet, none have considered LGBT elders within the specific context of community-based senior centers. My study addressed the research question: how does the discourse of senior centers create welcoming environments, or alternately construct silences, for LGBT older adults? Through an integrated conceptual framework engaging the critical lens of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practice in tandem with conceptualizations of silence found in feminist theory and scholar of Black women’s intellectual history, I employed an embedded single case design …

Foodborne Pathogens And Water Quality In Commercial-Scale Aquaponic Systems With Rapid Micro Screen Solids Removal, Sean Zachary Fogarty Jan 2021

Foodborne Pathogens And Water Quality In Commercial-Scale Aquaponic Systems With Rapid Micro Screen Solids Removal, Sean Zachary Fogarty

Master's Theses and Capstones

To meet global nutritional needs, humans need to produce an ever-increasing amount of food with dwindling natural resources. Demand for nutritious foods, particularly lean meat, fruits, and vegetables, is rapidly accelerating. To increase the intensity of production and utilize non-arable land, many growers are turning to controlled environment agriculture systems like hydroponic crop production and aquaculture (fish farming), but these are inherently inefficient in terms of water and nutrient utilization. Aquaponics is a relatively novel agricultural method that combines hydroponic and aquacultural production models to mitigate many of the costs—both realized and implicit, environmental and economic—associated with either production model …

We sought to determine whether a shortened version of the 12-item Household Water Insecurity Experiences (HWISE) Scale, which measures water insecurity equivalently in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), is valid for broad use. Using data from 9,261 households in 25 LMICs, subsets of candidate items were evaluated on their predictive accuracy, criterion validity, and sensitivity-specificity. A subset with items assessing "worry," "changing plans," "limited drinking water," and "inability to wash hands" because of problems with water (range: 0-12) were highly correlated with full HWISE Scale scores (correlation coefficient: 0.949-0.980) and introduced minimal additional error (root mean square error: 2.13-2.68). Criterion …
