The Association Between Cardiovascular Disease Knowledge And Risk Factors Among African American Breast Cancer Survivors In The Deep South, Michelle S. Williams, Chizoba Anyimukwu
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Purpose: African American breast cancer survivors in the Deep South have a disproportionately high burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. Multiple potentially modifiable CVD risk factors are highly prevalent in this population, such as high blood pressure, obesity, and poor dietary habits. The purpose of this study was to assess the association between CVD health metrics and heart disease knowledge among the target population.
Methods: The Heart Disease Knowledge Questionnaire was used to assess the participants’ knowledge of heart disease and heart disease risk factors. Questions from My Life Check were used to assess the participants cardiovascular health metrics. Multivariate …

COVID-19 has exacted a severe toll on the United States population’s physical and mental health and its effects have been felt most severely among people of color and low socioeconomic status. Using illustrative case studies, this commentary argues that in addition to COVID-19 health disparities created by psychosocial stressors such as the inability to socially distance and access quality healthcare, environmental justice communities have the additional burden of disproportionate exposure to toxic contaminants that contribute to their higher risk of COVID-19. Environmental contaminants including heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants found contaminating their nearby environments can alter the immune response, …

The Impact Of Food Insecurity Screenings And Community Food Resource Referrals For Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Miriam Ngozi Ofili, Robin M. Lawson
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
ABSTRACT
Approximately 50 million people in the United States are food insecure, which makes food insecurity (FI) one of the country’s most prevalent health issues. Food insecurity has been shown to be a contributing factor to uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), which affects about 34.1 million adults in the United States. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of integration of an electronic social determinants of health screening and community referral process for adult patients with T2D and FI. The aim was to determine if Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels are reduced in adult patients with T2D by …

The Relationship Between Menopause And Marital Satisfaction In Adult Women, Andrea K. Roesch, Amy Warren, Elaine Hill
Journal of Graduate Education Research
The purpose of this non-experimental study was to determine if menopause has an effect on marital satisfaction, depression, and weight gain in women. Participants were a convenience sample of 100 volunteers. The participants completed a survey to determine the effects of menopause on marital satisfaction, depression, and weight gain. An analysis of the results revealed that menopause does not have a significant impact on marital satisfaction or weight gain. The results did reveal a significant connection between menopause and depression.

Notre Dame Law Review Reflection
When sitting in diversity jurisdiction, must a federal court apply federal equitable principles when deciding state law claims, even if state law may provide a different outcome? That was the question before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in the case of Sonner v. Premier Nutrition Corp. Although the Ninth Circuit’s published opinion relies on “seventy-five years” of unchanged law, the opinion joins a long list of cases that continue to help clarify the tenets from Erie Railroad Co. v. Tompkins and inform the courts and practitioners on the relationship between state and federal authority …

Potential Functional Variants In Ahr Signaling Pathways Are Associated With Age At Puberty In Swine, Dan Nonneman, Clay A. Lents, Lea A. Rempel, Gary A. Rohrer
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Puberty in female pigs is defined as age at first estrus and gilts that have an earlier age at puberty are more likely to have greater lifetime productivity. Because age at puberty is predictive for sow longevity and lifetime productivity, but not routinely measured in commercial herds, it would be beneficial to use genomic or marker-assisted selection to improve these traits. A GWAS at the US Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) identified several loci associated with age at puberty in pigs. Candidate genes in these regions were scanned for potential functional variants using sequence information from the USMARC swine population …

The Effects Of Veganism On Endurance Running Performance, Wesley Toh, Kristle Ann Garcia, Ishwin Mann, Saw Caesar Htoo, Nor Natasha Amir
Introduction to Research Methods RSCH 202
With the growing interest in veganism and its potential health benefits to athletes, it is imperative to consider whether dietary practices could influence athletic performance. The purpose of this research is to find out whether veganism leads to a better performance in endurance runners. We also examine recent studies that attempt to highlight the positive and negative impacts of veganism on athletes’ health. This study adopts a similar framework to the Nutritional and Running High Mileage (NURMI) study, which aims to investigate the relationship between different diet types and running performance. 200 volunteers in Singapore will participate in a cross-sectional …

Hair follicles cycle through periods of growth (anagen), regression (catagen), rest (telogen), and release (exogen). Telogen is further divided into refractory and competent telogen based on expression of bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) and wingless-related MMTV integration site 7A (WNT7A). During refractory telogen hair follicle stem cells (HFSC) are inhibited. Retinoic acid synthesis proteins localized to the hair follicle and this localization pattern changed throughout the hair cycle. In addition, excess retinyl esters arrested hair follicles in telogen. The purpose of this study was to further define these hair cycle changes. BMP4 and WNT7A expression was also used to distinguish …

Background: Bangladesh hosts more than 800,000 Rohingya refugees from Myanmar. The low health immunity, lifestyle, access to good healthcare services, and social-security cause this population to be at risk of far more direct effects of COVID-19 than the host population. Therefore, evidence-based forecasting of the COVID-19 burden is vital in this regard. In this study, we aimed to forecast the COVID-19 obligation among the Rohingya refugees of Bangladesh to keep up with the disease outbreak’s pace, health needs, and disaster preparedness. Methodology and Findings: To estimate the possible consequences of COVID-19 in the Rohingya camps of Bangladesh, we used a …

Socioeconomic And Demographic Predictors Of Women's First Birth At An Early Age: Evidence From Bangladesh’S Demographic And Health Survey, 2004-2014, Akhtarul Islam, Sharlene Alauddin, Sutapa D. Barna
Journal of International Women's Studies
Women's health is highly influenced by early childbearing in 95% of developing countries such as Bangladesh. Women who have their first child at an early age receive fewer years of schooling, which also influences their employment life. Women's early age at first birth creates health complications, increases both maternal and child mortality, and prolongs the reproductive duration as well as a country's fertility rate. This is a major social and public health problem around the world. This study aims to investigate the existing situation in Bangladesh and to identify the triggering influencing factors of age at first birth. A cross-sectional …

Women And Evolution Of Cultural Practices Among The Igbo Of Nigeria, Christian C. Opata, Apex A. Apeh, Asogwa S. Odoja, Alaku Emmanuel
Journal of International Women's Studies
Studies on Igbo women have ignored the part played by either fear of women or respect for them in the evolution of festivals and some customary practices. Embedded in this neglect is the non-recognition of their contribution to the development of their societies. However, evidence that some cultural practices evolved out of fear of women and respect for them by the men abounds as manifest in the evolution of some spirit being institutions, memorialisation of women’s war exploits, and veneration of kola nut. Anchored on extensive field investigation, the application of historical narrative and qualitative research method, this study traced …

A Methyl Esterase 1 (Pvmes1) Promotes The Salicylic Acid Pathway And Enhances Fusarium Wilt Resistance In Common Beans, Renfeng Xue, Ming Feng, Jian Chen, Weide Ge, Matthew W. Blair
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is an important food legume. Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. phaseoli is one of the most serious soil-born diseases of common bean found throughout the world and affects the yield and quality of the crop. Few sources of Fusarium wilt resistance exist in legumes and most are of quantitative inheritance. In this study, we have identified a methyl salicylate esterase (MES), PvMES1, that contributes to plant defense response by regulating the salicylic acid (SA) mediated signaling pathway in response to Fusarium wilt in common beans. The result showed the role of …

Facilitating Healthier Eating At Restaurants: A Multidisciplinary Scoping Review Comparing Strategies, Barriers, Motivators, And Outcomes By Restaurant Type And Initiator, Melissa Fuster, Margaret A. Handley, Tamara Alam, Lee Ann Fullington, Brian Elbel, Krishnendu Ray, Terry T-K Huang
Publications and Research
Restaurants are understudied yet increasingly important food environment institutions for tackling diet-related diseases. This scoping review analyzes research and gray literature (n = 171 records) to assess which healthy eating promotion strategies have been implemented in restaurants and the associated motivations, barriers, and outcomes, compared by restaurant type (corporate/chain vs. independently owned restaurants) and initiator (restaurant-initiated vs. investigator-initiated). We found that the most commonly reported strategy was the increase of generally healthy offerings and the promotion of such offerings. Changes in food availability were more common among corporate restaurants and initiated by restaurants, while environmental facilitators were more commonly initiated …
