Vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) is a highly effective bariatric surgery that sustainably treats obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, the underlying mechanisms governing its metabolic benefits remain unclear. In this study, we have used four different genetically modified mouse lines to understand the link between bile acid circulation and metabolic effects of VSG. Instead of directly activating the nuclear bile acid receptor farnesoid X receptor (Fxr) in the liver or intestine, VSG reduces intestinal levels of bile acids, thereby decreasing fat absorption in the intestine. Given the rising popularity of bariatric surgeries to treat obesity and associated T2D, the …

Anxiety And Mood Disorders Impacting Physician Opioid Prescribing In The Pediatric Hospital Setting, Candice D. Donaldson, Zeev N. Kain, Louis Ehwerhemuepha, Michelle A. Fortier, Michael T. Phan, Daniel M. Tomaszewski, Sun Yang, William Feaster, Brooke N. Jenkins

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

This research examined whether pediatric inpatients without an anxiety/mood disorder are more likely to receive opioids in response to pain compared to patients diagnosed with a mental health condition. Research questions were tested using cross-sectional inpatient electronic medical record data. Propensity score matching was used to match patients with a disorder with patients without the disorder (anxiety analyses: N = 2892; mood analyses: N = 1042). Although patients with anxiety and mood disorders experienced greater pain, physicians were less likely to order opioids for these patients. Analyses also disclosed an interaction of anxiety with pain—the pain-opioid relation was stronger for …

Prior person-centered research has consistently identified a subgroup of highly religious participants that uses significantly less alcohol when compared to the other subgroups. The construct of religious motivation is absent from existing examinations of the nuanced combinations of religiousness dimensions within persons, and alcohol expectancy valuations have yet to be included as outcome variables. Variable-centered approaches have found religious motivation and alcohol expectancy valuations to play a protective role against individuals’ hazardous alcohol use. The current study examined latent religiousness profiles and hazardous alcohol use in a large, multisite sample of ethnically diverse college students. The sample consisted of 7412 …

The Rise Of Aquaculture: Is Farmed Salmon A Healthier Alternative Than Wild Salmon?, Caleb N. Raspler Feb 2021

The Rise Of Aquaculture: Is Farmed Salmon A Healthier Alternative Than Wild Salmon?, Caleb N. Raspler

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal

Increased population led to an increased demand for seafood, ultimately innovating the seafood industry and rise of aquaculture. This technique allows fish, such as salmon, to be farm-raised in controlled conditions in attempts to provide sustainable fish for consumers while allowing wild fish to repopulate. Aquaculture nevertheless initiated environmental and human health concerns, sparking a debate over whether farmed salmon is a healthier alternative than wild salmon. This article discusses such concerns and suggests tools to address them like increased federal agency regulation, congressional intervention, and genetically engineered salmon.

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Universal primary education is critical for individual academic growth and overall adult productivity of nations. Estimates indicate that 25% of 59 million primary age out of school children drop out and early grade failure is one of the factors. An objective and feasible screening measure to identify at-risk children in the early grades can help to design appropriate interventions. The objective of this study was to use a Machine Learning algorithm to evaluate the power of Electroencephalogram (EEG) data collected at age 4 in predicting academic achievement at age 8 among rural children in Pakistan. Demographic and EEG data from …

Supplementing with creatine is very popular amongst athletes and exercising individuals for improving muscle mass, performance and recovery. Accumulating evidence also suggests that creatine supplementation produces a variety of beneficial effects in older and patient populations. Furthermore, evidence-based research shows that creatine supplementation is relatively well tolerated, especially at recommended dosages (i.e. 3-5 g/day or 0.1 g/kg of body mass/day). Although there are over 500 peer-refereed publications involving creatine supplementation, it is somewhat surprising that questions regarding the efficacy and safety of creatine still remain. These include, but are not limited to: 1. Does creatine lead to water retention? 2. …

Mind-Body Interventions To Reduce Coronavirus Pandemic Stress And Support Long-Term Recovery, Patricia L. Gerbarg, Richard P. Brown Feb 2021

Mind-Body Interventions To Reduce Coronavirus Pandemic Stress And Support Long-Term Recovery, Patricia L. Gerbarg, Richard P. Brown

NYMC Faculty Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic is causing global stress, trauma and mental illness that has already outpaced current healthcare resources. Inequalities in the burden of illness, death, and economic loss are exacerbated by inequalities in the provision of mental health care. Minority populations and indigenous peoples bear the brunt of both inequities. Ancient healing systems, such as Yoga, Qigong, and tribal practices, are a rich source of group healing methods that can be studied and optimized for prevention and recovery during current and future disasters. Modern research is shedding light on a myriad of mechanisms that underly the healing properties of voluntarily …
