Better Together? The Effects Of Shared Medical Appointments On Bmi In Obese Adults, Amanda Larson May 2021

Better Together? The Effects Of Shared Medical Appointments On Bmi In Obese Adults, Amanda Larson

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

The United States (U.S.) is amidst an obesity epidemic, with Indiana ranking as the 15th worst state (Institute of Medicine, 2012; United Health Foundations, 2020). Despite current management strategies, the obesity rate in both the U.S. and Indiana continues to rise (WHO, 2020). Therefore, obesity management must change. The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to determine if the addition of shared medical appointments (SMAs) consisting of informational group sessions by specialists and brief individualized meetings with the provider will result in greater reduction of weight and body mass index (BMI) compared to standard care alone in those …

Evaluation Of The Effect Of The Humic Acid Inhibitor On Forensic Genetic Investigations Of Human Skeletal Remains, Madeline King May 2021

Evaluation Of The Effect Of The Humic Acid Inhibitor On Forensic Genetic Investigations Of Human Skeletal Remains, Madeline King

Honors Theses

Postmortem survival of DNA in human skeletal remains occurs due to the compact microstructure of the skeleton and its ability to provide a strong, protective physical barrier to environmental insults. On a molecular level, DNA preservation in bones/teeth involves electrostatic interactions between the negatively-charged DNA backbone and positively charged calcium residues in hydroxyapatite, the latter of which is one of the main components of bone microstructure. Despite these protections, over time endogenous DNA becomes damaged, limiting our ability to detect it and affecting its utility in making a positive identification. Hence, forensic genetic investigations of unidentified human remains (UHRs) are …

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

Central leptin action rescues type 1 diabetic (T1D) hyperglycemia; however, the underlying mechanism and the identity of mediating neurons remain elusive. Here, we show that leptin receptor (LepR)-expressing neurons in arcuate (LepRArc) are selectively activated in T1D. Activation of LepRArc neurons, Arc GABAergic (GABAArc) neurons, or arcuate AgRP neurons, is able to reverse the leptin’s rescuing effect. Conversely, inhibition of GABAArc neurons, but not AgRP neurons, produces leptin-mimicking rescuing effects. Further, AgRP neuron function is not required for T1D hyperglycemia or leptin’s rescuing effects. Finally, T1D LepRArc neurons show defective nutrient sensing and signs of cellular energy deprivation, which are …

Incorporating Social Media Into The Classroom: A Case Study On How Tiktok Can Be Immersed Into Classroom Pedagogy, Sara Solomon

Education | Master's Theses

My research project focuses on the use of TikTok embedded within classroom pedagogy and how it can be used as a tool to support academic and social emotional wellbeing. There is a lack of research investigating how social media can be incorporated into the classroom to make up for potential academic losses, including the inevitable social/emotional needs of adolescents that need to be addressed due to the ramifications of COVID-19. In my research, I question ways in which students see this tool as supporting their wellbeing, in what ways parents see this tool as supporting their child's wellbeing, and why …

Designing An Optimal Lighting Fixture For Extraterrestrial Crop Growth: Integrating Efficacy And Photobiology, Paul Kusuma May 2021

Designing An Optimal Lighting Fixture For Extraterrestrial Crop Growth: Integrating Efficacy And Photobiology, Paul Kusuma

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Extraterrestrial crop growth will require the development of technologies that provide photons to drive photosynthesis. Light-emitting diode (LED) technology is the likely technology of choice due to 1) its inherent flexibility, and 2) its high efficiency. Here we describe two important considerations for the optimization of this system: photon efficacy (μmol of photons produced per joule of input electrical energy) and spectral effects on plant growth and development. With these two considerations, we suggest the design of an LED fixture for extraterrestrial crop growth that contains a 5:10:55:30 ratio of blue, green, red, and far-red photons (respectively). This would be …

Investigating The Potential Cardioprotective Properties Of Two Novel Microbiome Derived Compounds Urolithin A And Urolithin B Against Methylglyoxal Induced Cellular Damage, Alhussain Yasin, Qian Chen

Research Day

Introduction: Diabetes puts patients at higher risk to develop cardiac, vascular, and neuronal complications due to accumulation of advanced glycation end products. Methylglyoxal (MG) is found raised in diabetic plasma and serves as a precursor of advanced glycation end products. There still is a lack of strategy to mitigate MG’s deleterious effects. Urolithin A (URO A) and Urolithin B (URO B) are two novel microbiome derived compounds that can be found plentiful in such sources as pomegranates, raspberries, and strawberries. There has been recent interest in their ability to provide protection against cellular damage. Their activity against MG induced cellular …

Perilipin 2 Downregulation In Β Cells Impairs Insulin Secretion Under Nutritional Stress And Damages Mitochondria, Akansha Mishra, Chen Kang, Rajan Sah, Et Al. May 2021

Perilipin 2 Downregulation In Β Cells Impairs Insulin Secretion Under Nutritional Stress And Damages Mitochondria, Akansha Mishra, Chen Kang, Rajan Sah, Et Al.

Open Access Publications

Perilipin 2 (PLIN2) is a lipid droplet (LD) protein in β cells that increases under nutritional stress. Downregulation of PLIN2 is often sufficient to reduce LD accumulation. To determine whether PLIN2 positively or negatively affects β cell function under nutritional stress, PLIN2 was downregulated in mouse β cells, INS1 cells, and human islet cells. β Cell-specific deletion of PLIN2 in mice on a high-fat diet reduced glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) in vivo and in vitro. Downregulation of PLIN2 in INS1 cells blunted GSIS after 24-hour incubation with 0.2 mM palmitic acid. Downregulation of PLIN2 in human pseudoislets cultured at 5.6 …

Comparison Of Abiotic And Biotic Factors Between Coves Of Varying Connection To Harlan County Reservoir, Nebraska, Brian Edward Mason May 2021

Comparison Of Abiotic And Biotic Factors Between Coves Of Varying Connection To Harlan County Reservoir, Nebraska, Brian Edward Mason

Biology Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Sediment berms of various heights have developed in the mouths of several coves within Harlan County Reservoir due to a combination of sediment deposition and lateral drift of eroded sediments. These berms can isolate coves from the main reservoir if the berm height is greater than the water elevation of the reservoir. Disconnection of coves may impact water quality, zooplankton, and fish within the isolated reservoir habitats. This study will examine differences in water quality parameters, zooplankton communities, and fish assemblages between disconnected coves, connected coves and the main reservoir. Water quality parameters related to water clarity and productivity differed …

The Potential Benefit Of Oral Simethicone In Improving Colonic Visualization And Polyp Detection In Routine Colonoscopy Screenings, Phi Tran, Loukya Kanakamedala, Bhavin Dave May 2021

The Potential Benefit Of Oral Simethicone In Improving Colonic Visualization And Polyp Detection In Routine Colonoscopy Screenings, Phi Tran, Loukya Kanakamedala, Bhavin Dave

Research Day

Introduction: Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States among men and women. Many of these cancers can be prevented through regular colonoscopy screening. However, the bowel preps used prior to the screening procedure create a frothy or “bubbly” appearance within the colon. Physicians have tried to overcome this with the flushing of water or using simethicone in the water canister during the procedure, but they have provided minimal efficacy and simethicone damages the colonoscope. As a result, physicians have a difficult time viewing the colonic mucosa and thoroughly inspecting the colon for polyps. …
