Delay Discounting And Food Reinforcement In Youth Of Color: A Cluster Analysis, Bernardo Loiacono
Delay Discounting And Food Reinforcement In Youth Of Color: A Cluster Analysis, Bernardo Loiacono
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Pediatric obesity within the United States continues to be national health concern. Children of color are systemically impacted by obesity. Behavioral Economics (BE) provides a theoretical framework for understanding what social, psychological, and cultural factors impact decision making and food consumption. BE posits that poor executive control (i.e., impulsivity) and relative reinforcing value of food (RRVfood) are two main behavioral components that predict consumption habits. These constructs are poorly understood among children from non-white backgrounds. The current study aimed to 1) identify patterns of impulsivity and food reinforcement within a diverse sample of 88 elementary school children and …

Background Researching people with herpes simplex virus (HSV) is challenging because of poor data quality, low user engagement, and concerns around stigma and anonymity. Objective This project aimed to improve data collection for a real-world HSV registry by identifying predictors of HSV infection and selecting a limited number of relevant questions to ask new registry users to determine their level of HSV infection risk. Methods The US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2015-2016) database includes the confirmed HSV type 1 and type 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2, respectively) status of American participants (14-49 years) and a wealth of demographic …

Beneficial Bacteria: How Misunderstood Organisms Can Promote Wound Repair In Chronic Subcutaneous Wounds., Molly Van Dyke
Beneficial Bacteria: How Misunderstood Organisms Can Promote Wound Repair In Chronic Subcutaneous Wounds., Molly Van Dyke
SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal
Chronic wound formation is an affliction that disproportionately affects those of lower socioeconomic status on a global scale due to a variety of contributing factors, like type 2 diabetes and housing environment (Fayne, 2020). Antibiotic use in response to a cutaneous wound selects for antibiotic-resistant bacteria, posing a risk for colonization by biofilm-forming species that can result in chronic wounds. Biofilms decrease future antibiotic use efficiency and inflames the surrounding tissue, potentially resulting in necrosis of the tissues. Current studies show the possibility for probiotic application or reintroduction of commensal organisms erased by antibiotic use as a therapeutic mechanism for …

Understanding Milk Consumption Habits Among College Students In Order To Redesign Outreach, Stacey F. Stearns, Adam N. Rabinowitz
Understanding Milk Consumption Habits Among College Students In Order To Redesign Outreach, Stacey F. Stearns, Adam N. Rabinowitz
Journal of Extension
College students consume less dairy milk than in the past. Increased competition in the beverage aisle influences their choices. However, much of the population is not meeting the recommended intake guidelines for calcium. A survey of undergraduate college students with university dining plans focused on milk consumption habits, beverage choices, and student attitudes toward healthful foods and nutrition. Results are guiding Extension program educational outreach campaigns to college students. By focusing on the healthful and nutritional benefits of milk, Extension educators could increase consumption among college age consumers, and their long-term healthful outcomes.

Contrasting to the established role of the hypothalamic agouti-related protein (AgRP) neurons in feeding regulation, the neural circuit and signaling mechanisms by which they control energy expenditure remains unclear. Here, we report that energy expenditure is regulated by a subgroup of AgRP neurons that send non-collateral projections to neurons within the dorsal lateral part of dorsal raphe nucleus (dlDRN) expressing the melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R), which in turn innervate nearby serotonergic (5-HT) neurons. Genetic manipulations reveal a bi-directional control of energy expenditure by this circuit without affecting food intake. Fiber photometry and electrophysiological results indicate that the thermo-sensing MC4RdlDRN neurons …

Impact Of Nutrition-Based Interventions On Athletic Performance During Menstrual Cycle Phases: A Review, Macy M. Helm, Graham R. Mcginnis, Arpita Basu
Kinesiology and Nutrition Sciences Faculty Research
Despite the steady increase in female participation in sport over the last two decades, comprehensive research on interventions attenuating the influence of female menstrual physiology on performance remains scarce. Studies involving eumenorrheic women often only test in one menstrual phase to limit sex hormone variance, which may restrict the application of these findings to the rest of the menstrual cycle. The impacts of nutrition-based interventions on athletic performance throughout the menstrual cycle have not been fully elucidated. We addressed this gap by conducting a focused critical review of clinical studies that reported athletic outcomes as well as menstrual status for …

Perturbations to the gut microbiome are implicated in altered neurodevelopmental trajectories that may shape life span risk for emotion dysregulation and affective disorders. However, the sensitive periods during which the microbiome may influence neurodevelopment remain understudied. We investigated relationships between gut microbiome composition across infancy and temperament at 12 months of age. In 67 infants, we examined if gut microbiome composition assessed at 1–3 weeks, 2, 6, and 12 months of age was associated with temperament at age 12 months. Stool samples were sequenced using the 16S Illumina MiSeq platform. Temperament was assessed using the Infant Behavior Questionnaire-Revised (IBQ-R). Beta …

Do Conditional Cash Transfers Increase School Enrollment? Evidence From Brazil, Jeanette L. Silvernale
Master's Theses
Conditional cash transfer programs have been widely deployed across the globe. They seek to bolster human capital by providing benefits contingent upon a variety of actions such as school attendance and regular health checkups. Bolsa Familia is the most extensive conditional cash transfer program, serving 46 million Brazilian citizens. Despite its expansive size, there have been seldom large-scale micro evaluations of the program. Limited data has resulted in small sample sizes drawn from a single point in time. Our study diverges from the rest and utilizes a novel administrative dataset with an overall sample of nearly 60 million and a …
Finite Element Analysis And Modeling Of The Reserve Zone Chondrocyte Cilium Response To Growth Plate Compression And Tension, Paola Michelle Jimenez Carrion
Finite Element Analysis And Modeling Of The Reserve Zone Chondrocyte Cilium Response To Growth Plate Compression And Tension, Paola Michelle Jimenez Carrion
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Finite element models of the growth plate were created that included chondrocytes with primary cilia at different depths within the reserve zone (RZ) between the epiphyseal subchondral bone-plate (SBP) and proliferative zone (PZ). Cilia were oriented along the direction of bone growth. Loading was applied to include 10% compression or tension across the growth plate cartilage. Under compression, axial strains in the cilium body were compressive and increased with cell depth between the SBP (-20%) to the PZ (-40%); cilium membrane radial strains were compressive (-5%) near the SBP but became tensile (10%) near the PZ. Under distraction, axial strains …

Effective delivery of continuing education programs can improve their impact. Using the first of four two-week modules of a professional short course, we tested outcomes of a flipped classroom approach, comparing professional foresters’ completion rates, preference for, and perceived value of pre-module content delivered via video and reading. Participants in the National Advanced Silviculture Program self-reported significantly higher pre-module completion rates, preference for, and perceived value of video over reading. This simple study suggests the potential for video to serve as an accessible and preferred format for delivery of key content to supplement an in-person continuing education program.

Continuous-Flow Left Ventricular Assist Device Explantation After More Than 5 Years Of Circulatory Support And Ventricular Reconditioning, George V Letsou, Andrew C W Baldwin, Andrew B Civitello, William E Cohn, O H Frazier
The Texas Heart Institute Journal
Continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices have proved to be effective, durable, life-saving tools in patients with end-stage heart failure. However, because of the risks associated with mechanical circulatory support (including stroke, infection, gastrointestinal bleeding, and device malfunction), the optimal goal of device therapy is myocardial recovery and device removal. Ventricular reconditioning and pump explantation after continuous-flow support have been reported; however, little is known about variables that govern the pace and degree of myocardial response in patients who experience such recovery. We describe our long-term pump-weaning strategy for a 25-year-old man who had a continuous-flow device implanted and then needed …

Participating in a community supported agriculture (CSA) share is one way for individuals with low income to use their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits in buying local, seasonal fruits and vegetables. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service (USDA FNS) authorizes businesses to accept SNAP benefits, including direct marketing farmers and nonprofit food buying cooperatives operating a CSA. SNAP is the largest federal nutrition assistance program, formerly known as food stamps. Eligible individuals and families use an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, similar to a debit card, to purchase eligible food at SNAP authorized vendors. In Utah, …
Digital Urban Agriculture As Disparate Development: The Future Of Food In Three U.S. Cities Through The Lens Of Stakeholder Perceptions, Networks, And Resource Flows, Michael Carolan
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
Urban agriculture takes many forms. Often, the term elicits images of raised beds, hoop houses, and, in those instances where topsoil is both present and non-contaminated, in-ground gardens—what I call traditional urban agriculture (“TUA”). But that imagery is changing, especially in some parts of the country where vacant space is scarce and land prices dear. In those instances, cities are seeing growth in digital urban agriculture (“DUA”). DUA, as defined here, refers to farming within urban and peri-urban areas that incorporates elements of automation, software, and/or silicon-based hardware into their operations. While this definition is not meant to draw a …

Alcohol is a carcinogen. Recommendations to reduce alcohol use to lower cancer risk are increasingly common. However, neither the beliefs of US adults about alcohol consumption and cancer risk, nor factors influencing those beliefs, are well understood. We used data from the 2019 Health Information National Trends Survey (analysis N = 4,470) to examine beliefs about whether drinking too much alcohol increases cancer risk. We compared those beliefs to beliefs for three other health problems, and examined whether believing alcohol is a cancer risk factor was related to demographics, risk perceptions, other beliefs about the nature of cancer, and alcohol …

The anti-PD1 monoclonal antibody pembrolizumab improves survival in recurrent/metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Patients with locoregional, pathologically high-risk HNSCC recur frequently despite adjuvant cisplatin-radiation therapy (CRT). Targeting PD1 may reverse immunosuppression induced by HNSCC and CRT. We conducted a phase I trial with an expansion cohort (n = 20) to determine the recommended phase II schedule (RP2S) for adding fixed-dose pembrolizumab to standard adjuvant CRT. Eligible patients had resected HPV-negative, stage III-IV oral cavity, pharynx, or larynx HNSCC with extracapsular nodal extension or positive margin. RP2S was declared if three or fewer dose-limiting toxicities (DLT) occurred in …

Population-health research has neglected differentiation within postsecondary educational attainments. This gap is critical to understanding health inequality because college experience with no degree, vocational/technical certificates, and associate degrees may affect health differently. We examine health across detailed postsecondary attainment levels. We analyze data on 14,750 respondents in Waves I and IV of the nationally representative Add Health panel spanning adolescence to ages 26 to 34. Multivariate regression and counterfactual approaches to minimize the impact of confounders estimate multiple health outcomes across postsecondary attainment levels. Compared to high school diplomas, we find significant returns to bachelor’s degrees for most health outcomes …
Engineered Nanostructured Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Network (Ndc) Electrodes With Unprecedented Cycling Stability For Water Capacitive Deionization In Harsh Conditions, Soha Essam Anwar
Theses and Dissertations
Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a feasible low-cost desalination technique for low-to-medium (brackish) salinity water. However, cycling stability and regeneration of the CDI electrodes are the bottlenecks hindering the practical application of the technology on large scale. Oxidation of the electrodes during the sequential adsorption-desorption processes is one of the most challenging problems hindering their long-term cycling performance. Herein, we demonstrated the ability to design and fabricate exceptionally stable CDI electrodes via a one-pot pyrolysis protocol. The optimized pyrolysis of nitrogen-carbon precursors at different temperatures enabled the fabrication of carbon materials with a controlled amount nitrogen dopant (NDCs) with exceptional cycling …

Steroid-refractory (SR) acute graft-versus-host disease (aGvHD) remains a significant complication after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation. Systemic corticosteroids are first-line therapy for aGvHD, but apart from ruxolitinib, there are no approved treatments for SR aGvHD. Vedolizumab is approved for treatment of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, and may be effective for treatment of SR intestinal aGvHD. We conducted a phase 2a trial (NCT02993783) to evaluate the clinical efficacy, tolerability, and safety of vedolizumab 300 and 600 mg for SR intestinal aGvHD. This study was terminated before full enrollment was completed because early results failed to demonstrate positive proof-of-concept in efficacy. Before …
There’S Something In The Water: Toxic Exposure Liability Of Public Water Suppliers In The Face Of Near-Universal Pfas Exposure, David Lloyd
San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law
California has not experienced the type of willful, large-scale PFAS pollution that states that hosted its manufacture, such as Ohio and West Virginia, have endured. Regardless, the ubiquity of these chemicals in California’s food and water supply, combined with a growing awareness of the serious health risks of PFAS exposure, prompted California to become a nationwide leader in PFAS regulation. In 2017, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) “added PFOA and PFOS to the Proposition 65 list of chemicals known to the state to cause reproductive toxicity” without setting a “maximum allowable dose level, below which no …
Consent To Jurisdiction Based On Registering To Do Business: A Limited Role For General Jurisdiction, Jeffrey L. Rensberger
Consent To Jurisdiction Based On Registering To Do Business: A Limited Role For General Jurisdiction, Jeffrey L. Rensberger
San Diego Law Review
General jurisdiction allows a state to assert jurisdiction over a defendant for any claim, even one having no relationship to events or parties in the state. Consent is one basis for general jurisdiction. Because of the Supreme Court’s recent constrictions of specific and general jurisdiction, plaintiffs are increasingly turning to general jurisdiction based on an out-of-state corporation consenting to jurisdiction by registering to do business in the state. There are several categories of cases in which a plaintiff may find such jurisdiction useful. But an unlimited form of such general jurisdiction is both bad jurisdictional policy and poses constitutional problems. …

The recipe frames primary source instruction around a theme that interests students because it relates to one of their classes. Through small-group work, students gain hands-on experience working with sources, examine how sources fit into a historical narrative, and draw comparisons with current topics in which they already have experience. The second objective of the recipe is to demonstrate how basic ingredients can easily be remixed into a variety of dishes.
Qualitative Exploration Of Mealtime Routines And Parental Stress Of Children With Pediatric Feeding Disorders: Analysis Of Occupational Performance, Andrea Patino
Student Capstone Papers
Pediatric feeding disorders (PFD) affect approximately 25-35% of children with typical development, 40-80% of children with developmental disabilities, and 90% of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Feeding disorders affect families by disrupting mealtime routines, changing family dynamics, and increasing parental stress. Occupational therapy (OT) focuses on client-centered care that facilitates independence in meaningful occupations, including feeding and eating. OTs also play an essential role in assisting, training, and educating parents on effective mealtime strategies that can be implemented and carried over into the home environment. Few research studies show how parents manage behaviors and stress during mealtime routines, and …

WRINKLED1 (WRI1), a member of the APETALA2 (AP2) class of transcription factors regulates fatty acid biosynthesis and triacylglycerol (TAG) accumulation in plants. Among the four known Arabidopsis WRI1 paralogs, only WRI2 was unable to complement and restore fatty acid content in wri1-1 mutant seeds. Avocado (Persea americana) mesocarp, which accumulates 60-70% dry weight oil content, showed high expression levels for orthologs of WRI2, along with WRI1 and WRI3, during fruit development. While the role of WRI1 as a master regulator of oil biosynthesis is well-established, the function of WRI1 paralogs is poorly understood. Comprehensive and comparative in silico analyses of …
