Neurodevelopmental Impacts Of Prenatal Exposures To Per- And Poly-Fluoroalkyl Substances; Multiple Outcome Assessments In Childhood Age 5 To 11 Years, Jiajun Luo
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic fluorine-containing chemicals that are widely used in a variety of industrial and commercial applications. Several PFAS compounds were reported to be ubiquitously detected in blood samples collected from the general population since the 1990s. Concerns are raised that PFAS exposure among pregnant women could affect offspring neurodevelopment, mainly because of two reasons: a) PFAS can transfer across the placenta during early gestation making them a direct threat to fetal brain development, and b) PFAS can interfere with maternal endocrine homeostasis during pregnancy which has been suggested to play a crucial role on offspring …
Environmental Mobility And Mental Health In Indonesia, Kate Burrows
Environmental Mobility And Mental Health In Indonesia, Kate Burrows
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Millions of people are displaced each year following climate- and weather-related disasters. These numbers are expected to grow as the frequency and severity of sudden-onset disasters become more extreme under climate change conditions. Additional population relocation will likely result from gradual impacts of slow-onset climate change including sea-level rise and drought. Despite the magnitude of this weather- and climate-related mobility (residential displacement and migration) both today and projected for the future, there is relatively limited empirical data assessing who is most likely to move after exposure to disasters, where they will go, and how this movement will impact their health …
Cross-Kingdom Expression Of Synthetic Genetic Elements Promotes The Discovery Of A New Class Of Nucleotide Analogs From The Human Microbiome, Jaymin Patel
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
The ability to mobilize functional genetic cargo into a versatile array of hosts is a defining challenge, as scientists increasingly reprogram diverse organisms as living therapeutics, for bioremediation, and as foundries for producing materials and molecules. However porting genetic material to diverse recipients is challenged by barriers to robust expression and mobilization. To address these challenges, we have developed an approach that integrates computer aided redesign of genetic sequences that are subsequently mobilized, expressed, and characterized cross-kingdom in diverse microbial hosts, including Gram negative and positive bacteria and yeast. Using the technology developed in this thesis, we were able to …
Identification Of Signaling Mechanisms Controlling The Development Of Organ-Specific Vascular Networks, Jinyu Li
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Blood vessels form highly branched networks that extend throughout the entire body. Endothelial cells forming the inner lining of blood vessels are responsible for vascular growth and physiological function, in that they control the exchange of gases, nutrients and immune cells between blood and tissues and respond to injury by mounting an appropriate repair response. While considered a homogenous cell population, endothelial cells display heterogeneity in structure and function and in health and disease. This structural and functional variability enables endothelial cells to adapt to their microenvironment and perform different roles in each organ. Various organotypic vascular beds have been …

Interplay Between Oxidative Stress, Pax6 And The Immune Response In The Developing Eye, Brian S. Thompson
Interplay Between Oxidative Stress, Pax6 And The Immune Response In The Developing Eye, Brian S. Thompson
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Eye development and lens morphogenesis are complex processes that are carefully orchestrated by a multitude of factors including extracellular signals, local activators and signal-regulated DNA-binding transcription factors. Any perturbation to these factors can impair eye development and lens morphogenesis and result in a range of structural abnormalities of the lens (and other ocular structures) and a spectrum of human disease ranging from the complete absence of the eye (anophthalmia), reduced eye size (microphthalmia) or optic fissure closure defect (coloboma). Oxidative stress, an imbalance between oxidants (e.g., reactive oxygen species (ROS)) and antioxidants (e.g., glutathione) in favor of the oxidants, may …

Eating healthy is not always easy. In fact it can be quite challenging especially if you think you are alone. A support group is a great way to feel like you are not alone. This is not your average support group. Since I am a little rough around the edges, you could say the support group is too. It does have structure because I want it to succeed but people can yell, scream, cuss and throw squishy balls at the wall.

The Influence Of Parental Obesity On Children And Adolescents, Seth Seward, Kaylee Eckert
Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
Obesity in America is an epidemic, with a total of 42.4% of adults having a BMI over 30.0. In Healthy People 2030, America set the goal of decreasing childhood and adolescent obesity from 17.8% of our population to 15.5%. Obesity is directly related to a higher risk of developing hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, asthma, anxiety, and depression. Through our literature review, we created the question 'During the ages of 2 to 18, are children and adolescents who have obese parents at an increased risk for obesity and related health diseases in comparison with children and adolescents who do not have obese …

Short-Term Canopy And Understory Nitrogen Addition Differ In Their Effects On Seedlings Of Dominant Woody Species In A Subtropical Evergreen Broadleaved Forest, Jun Wang, Dafeng Hui, Hai Ren, Nan Liu, Zhongyu Sun, Long Yang, Hongfang Lu
Biology Faculty Research
As atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition continues to increase, information on how N deposition affects seedling performance of tree species is critical for predicting forest regeneration. In this study, we examined the effects of canopy N addition at 25 and 50 kg ha−1 year−1 of N (CAN25 and CAN50), and understory N addition at 25 and 50 kg ha−1 year−1 of N (UAN25 and UAN50) on the survival, physiology, and growth of seedlings of two dominant woody species (Schima superba and Ardisia quinquegona) that were transplanted into a subtropical evergreen broadleaved forest. At two years after transplanting, understory N additon greatly …

Department of Biological Sciences Publications
In this study, we examined the ability of nisin A and a rationally assembled bank of 36 nisin derivative producing Lactococcus lactis strains to inhibit Listeria. A broth-based bioluminescence assay for screening single and combinations of bioengineered nisin derivatives using cell-free supernatants (CFS) from nisin derivative producing strains was developed. In this way, we screened 630 combinations of nisin derivative producing strains, identifying two (CFS from M17Q + N20P and M17Q + S29E) which exhibited enhanced anti-listerial activity when used together compared to when used alone, or to the nisin A producing strain. Minimal inhibitory concentration assays performed with purified …

Poverty is not a new struggle for families and students. Urban school districts have been plagued with high poverty rates for years, but now poverty is growing at substantial rates in suburban schools. Chronic absenteeism is one recurring problem that high poverty schools, of every typology, face on a regular basis. The case study presented here highlights the work of one urban principal in combating chronic absenteeism in her school. The purpose of this paper is to explore attendance problems in a high-poverty school. While this case study depicts a principal in a high-poverty school in an urban area, the …

Explaining Intergovernmental Conflict In The Covid-19 Crisis: The United States, Canada, And Australia, Andre Lecours, Daniel Beland, Alan Fenna, Tracy Beck Fenwick, Mireille Paquet, Philip Rocco, Alex Waddan
Political Science Faculty Research and Publications
The Covid-19 pandemic produced more significant immediate intergovernmental conflict in the U.S. than in Australia and Canada. This article considers three variables for this cross-national divergence: presidentialism versus parliamentarism; vertical party integration; and strength of intergovernmental arrangements. We find that the U.S. presidential system, contrary to parliamentarism in Canada and Australia, provided an opportunity for a populist outsider skeptical of experts to win the presidency and pursue a personalized style that favored intergovernmental conflict in times of crisis. Then, the intergovernmental conflict-inducing effect of the Trump presidency during the pandemic was compounded by the vertical integration of political parties, which …

Adverse Childhood Experiences And Interactions With The Criminal Justice System, Sarah Elizabeth Rapp
Adverse Childhood Experiences And Interactions With The Criminal Justice System, Sarah Elizabeth Rapp
Masters Theses
The connection between childhood traumas and subsequent detrimental adult behavioral issues has been well documented. In recent times, both the medical and psychological fields have turned their attention toward specific criteria of childhood traumas labeled Adverse Childhood Events, or ACEs. A threshold of ACE factors shows a significant connection to the later physical and mental health of individuals who have participated in such studies. Due to the connection between childhood traumas, mental health, and interactions with law enforcement, this study attempts to define the relationship, if such a relationship exists, between ACE factors and interactions with the criminal justice system. …

Democracy Avoidance In Tax Lawmaking, Clint G. Wallace
Democracy Avoidance In Tax Lawmaking, Clint G. Wallace
Faculty Publications
The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was the most significant tax law in more than three decades, but the strategy for getting it enacted included a variety of maneuvers to avoid public scrutiny. As a result, many taxpayers did not know how they would be affected until they filed their own tax returns more than a year later. This Article identifies this lack of transparency as part of a persistent pathology of avoiding and constraining democratic inputs and responsiveness in U.S. federal tax lawmaking. Indeed, some scholars and policy makers have sought to channel tax lawmaking away from democratically grounded …

A Phenological Analysis Of Páramo Vegetation Along An Altitudinal Gradient: The Influence Of Camelids On Andean Flora In The Páramo Of Chimborazo, Ecuador, Tessa Seifried
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This study hopes to reveal the mechanisms behind camelid-plant interactions in the Chimborazo province of Ecuador, which is known for having a large population of domesticated alpacas (Vicugna pacos), along with wild vicuñas (Vicugna vicugna) that were reintroduced into the area 30 years ago. These camelid species, especially vicuñas, are understudied within Ecuador in regards to their effects on plant composition, diversity, and spatial phenology. To gain a better insight into this topic, three sites were chosen: a site inhabited by only vicuña, a site inhabited by only alpaca, and a site inhabited by both species. The vicuña site sat …

Reef fish are a physically and functionally diverse group of organisms that live in close association with coral reef habitats. Chaetodontidae represents the most species rich family of corallivorous fish, and their reliance on corals as food resources has led to their designation as indicator species of coral cover and health. However, the majority of research on the foraging ecology of Caribbean Chaetodontids dates back several decades, and therefore does not account for recent changes in coral community composition as the result of disease, climate change, and other stressors. As the novel and deadly stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) …

Introduction: Diet and nutrition are leading causes of global morbidity and mortality. Our study aimed to identify and synthesise evidence on the association between food environment characteristics and diet, nutrition and health outcomes in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), relevant to urban settings, to support development and implementation of appropriate interventions.
Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of 9 databases from 1 January 2000 to 16 September 2020 with no language restrictions. We included original peer-reviewed observational studies, intervention studies or natural experiments conducted in at least one urban LMIC setting and reporting a quantitative association between a characteristic of …
