Detecting Interlocutor Confusion In Situated Human-Avatar Dialogue: A Pilot Study, Na Li, John D. Kelleher, Robert J. Ross

Conference papers

In order to enhance levels of engagement with conversational systems, our long term research goal seeks to monitor the confusion state of a user and adapt dialogue policies in response to such user confusion states. To this end, in this paper, we present our initial research centred on a user-avatar dialogue scenario that we have developed to study the manifestation of confusion and in the long term its mitigation. We present a new definition of confusion that is particularly tailored to the requirements of intelligent conversational system development for task-oriented dialogue. We also present the details of our Wizard-of-Oz based …

Interactive Learning Approach For Arabic Target-Based Sentiment Analysis, Husamelddin Balla, Marisa Llorens, Sarah Jane Delany Jan 2021

Interactive Learning Approach For Arabic Target-Based Sentiment Analysis, Husamelddin Balla, Marisa Llorens, Sarah Jane Delany

Conference papers

Recently, the majority of sentiment analysis researchers focus on target-based sentiment analysis because it delivers in-depth analysis with more accurate results as compared to traditional sentiment analysis. In this paper, we propose an interactive learning approach to tackle a target-based sentiment analysis task for the Arabic language. The proposed IALSTM model uses an interactive attentionbased mechanism to force the model to focus on different parts (targets) of a sentence. We investigate the ability to use targets, right and left contexts, and model them separately to learn their own representations via interactive modeling. We evaluated our model on two different datasets: …

The Value Of Humanization In Customer Service, Yang Gao, Huaxia Rui, Shujing Sun Jan 2021

The Value Of Humanization In Customer Service, Yang Gao, Huaxia Rui, Shujing Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As algorithm-based agents become increasingly capable of handling customer service queries, customers are often uncertain whether they are served by humans or algorithms, and managers are left to question the value of human agents once the technology matures. The current paper studies this question by quantifying the impact of customers' enhanced perception of being served by human agents on customer service interactions. Our identification strategy hinges on the abrupt implementation by Southwest Airlines of a signature policy, which requires the inclusion of an agent's first name in responses on Twitter, thereby making the agent more humanized in the eyes of …

Circulation Of Orhan Pamuk’S Benim Adim Kirmizi [My Name Is Red] In Contemporary Chinese-Indonesian Literature, Sebnem N. Karali, Alberta Natasia Adji Jan 2021

Circulation Of Orhan Pamuk’S Benim Adim Kirmizi [My Name Is Red] In Contemporary Chinese-Indonesian Literature, Sebnem N. Karali, Alberta Natasia Adji

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This article is an exploration of contemporary Turkish and Chinese-Indonesian literatures with regards to a mid to late 18th Century literary niche: the it-narrative. Thinking (noesis) back and forth between centuries and different literary genres makes (poiesis) the conversation possible, which addresses the socio-literary imagination of the last four centuries. The authors re- examine the genre of it-narrative outside 18th Century studies and reassess the encounter of Turkish author Orhan Pamuk and Chinese-Indonesian author Alberta Natasia Adji within the socio-cultural and historico-political context of modern Turkey and Indonesia. The question is how Pamuk’s use of prosopopoeia in his 1998 novel …

Translation Into Spanish, Cultural Adaption And Content Validity Of The Bristol Copd Knowledge Questionnaire, Vilma Gómez

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

COPD is the major cause of respiratory mortality world-wide. The treatment of COPD includes education and self-management to enable patients to control the symptoms, handle the treatment, manage the physical and psychosocial consequences of the disease, and adopt the necessary lifestyle changes for dealing with a chronic condition. Measurement of results of interventions is necessary to demonstrate their effectiveness. Questionnaires help clinicians measure the level of knowledge before and after treatments. However, there are no questionnaires available in Colombian Spanish to measure knowledge of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This research resulted in the translation into Spanish, cultural adaptation, and …

Spectatorial Sisterhood: Relasi Sosial Pengguna Second Account Di Instagram, Amelia Rugun Sirait

Antropologi Indonesia

Instagram is a popular image based social media platform. Usually, users have their own accounts for their personal profile to be viewed publicly. As Instagram features develop, users may have more than one account. Accounts that are specific to certain circle of friends are called “second accounts” and treated as private accounts used to express and relate through images. In this social media ethnography, seven subjects shared their experiences through uploaded images, videos and texts. They have the awareness to avoid relationships and gazes in their main account by building a different subjectivity in their second account. Contents on their …

The Fringe Or The Heart Of Things? Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Musics In Australian Music Institutions, Clint Bracknell, Linda Barwick Jan 2021

The Fringe Or The Heart Of Things? Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Musics In Australian Music Institutions, Clint Bracknell, Linda Barwick

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Teetering on the fringe of Australian music scholarship and knowledge institutions, research and teaching of local Indigenous musics hold a marginal place, belying the positioning of Indigenous music-makers at the centre of international representations of Australian culture, and the dynamic local connections of Indigenous music-making to Australian landscapes and social realities. Music’s ubiquity and diversity worldwide show its potential as a tool to manage the changing world in societies of the past and present, yet this potential is largely neglected in contemporary Australia, and our theories and evidence base are limited by the narrow western focus within our knowledge institutions. …

Background: The consideration of health-related quality of life (HRQL) is a hallmark of best practice in HIV care. Information technology offers an opportunity to more closely engage patients with chronic HIV infection in their long-term management and support a focus on HRQL. However, the implementation of patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures, such as HRQL in routine care, is challenged by the need to synthesize data generated by questionnaires, the complexity of collecting data between patient visits, and the integration of results into clinical decision-making processes. Objective: Our aim is to design and pilot-test a multimedia software platform to overcome these challenges …

Demystifying Remote Research In Anthropology And Area Studies, Kaitlyn Ugoretz Jan 2021

Demystifying Remote Research In Anthropology And Area Studies, Kaitlyn Ugoretz

Asia Pacific Perspectives

Physically cut off from locations and archives central to our work due to restrictions in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, area studies scholars must reimagine what constitutes rigorous and responsible research in their respective disciplines. The practice of remote research, however, is not a new one. Digital ethnography, an admittedly niche subdiscipline of anthropology, has long been grappling with the issues of how to value and conduct remote research. This essay explores a number of misconceptions regarding digital and remote research that may aid in contextualizing and coming to terms with the anxieties the broader scholarly community faces. I …

Generation 1.5 Learners: Removing The Mask Of Student Invisibility And Recognising The Learning Disconnections That Marred Their Academic Journeys, Elizabeth Serventy, Bill Allen

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Distinctive cohorts of students revealing inherent problems in managing their learning are on-going concerns in all universities. Students identified as Generation 1.5 learners are an increasing phenomenon in Australian universities yet may be “invisible” or unknown to teaching staff. They are neither fully proficient in their first language nor in English which is typically their second language (L2). Characteristically possessing well-developed basic interpersonal communicative skills, they lack the cognitive academic learning proficiencies essential for tertiary success. This article reports on doctoral research into six Generation 1.5 undergraduates navigating one academic year in one Western Australian university. Key findings include their …

Creating A Theoretical Framework To Underpin Discourse Assessment And Intervention In Aphasia, Lucy Dipper, Jane Marshall, Mary Boyle, Deborah Hersh, Nicola Botting, Madeline Cruice Jan 2021

Creating A Theoretical Framework To Underpin Discourse Assessment And Intervention In Aphasia, Lucy Dipper, Jane Marshall, Mary Boyle, Deborah Hersh, Nicola Botting, Madeline Cruice

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Discourse (a unit of language longer than a single sentence) is fundamental to everyday communication. People with aphasia (a language impairment occurring most frequently after stroke, or other brain damage) have communication difficulties which lead to less complete, less coherent, and less complex discourse. Although there are multiple reviews of discourse assessment and an emerging evidence base for discourse intervention, there is no unified theoretical framework to underpin this research. Instead, disparate theories are recruited to explain different aspects of discourse impairment, or symptoms are reported without a hypothesis about the cause. What is needed is a theoretical framework that …

Revised: Etymology Of “Ragtime”: Role Of “Tag, Rag, And “Bobtail” (The Rabble) And The 19th Century “Fancy Rag Balls”, Fred Hoeptner Jan 2021

Revised: Etymology Of “Ragtime”: Role Of “Tag, Rag, And “Bobtail” (The Rabble) And The 19th Century “Fancy Rag Balls”, Fred Hoeptner

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

Despite abundant speculation about the etymology of “rag” in “ragtime” since the emergence of ragtime music into popular consciousness in 1896, a convincing solution has remained elusive. As OED3 sums up the situation (rag, n. meaning #5): “Origin uncertain and disputed.”

But at least some new insight may now be possible. The present study is the first to use digitized newspaper archives to track “rag” and “ragtime” from their sources to full maturity, and the following picture emerges:

  1. The starting point is tag, rag, and bobtail “the common herd, the rabble”; the word appears in OED3 under bob-tail.
  2. Rag as …

Switching Between The L1 And L2: Teachers Corrective Feedback And Learner Uptake, Md Nesar Uddin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Over the years, an interest in switching between the L1 and L2 in L2 classroom instruction has grown in SLA research in parallel with the uptick in corrective feedback (CF) research. Separate studies on CF (e.g., Shirani, 2019; Bryfonski & Ma, 2020) and L1 use (e.g., Iyitoglu, 2016) have found that CF and language switching promote L2 learning, with L1 use facilitating the accomplishment of cognitively demanding tasks. However, research has not considered how switching between languages in the provision of CF impacts learning opportunities. This dissertation combined CF and language switching and explored the role of CF practices in …

Some research (e.g., Dobao, 2012; Shehadeh, 2011; Wigglesworth & Storch, 2009; Storch, 2005) suggests that collaborative L2 writing results in higher quality L2 writing production than individual writing. Similarly, collaborative L2 writing has also been found to bring about more L2 learning opportunities for learners (e.g., Dobao & Blum, 2013; Dobao, 2012; Wigglesworth & Storch, 2012; Brooks & Swain, 2009). However, much is still unknown about how CW promotes higher quality L2 writing and other L2 learning opportunities. The purpose of the current study was to examine second language collaborative writing in an under-researched EFL context to determine (1) whether …

In the first essay, hedonic regression on transaction data is the favored method to measure the impact of adverse environmental characteristics. However, this method only weakly identifies the direct causal relationship of unfavorable factors on house prices. The paper found a weak negative impact of 23% on the house price index in the early stage between treatment and control zip code using a robust two-way fixed effects estimation. The diagnostic of the two-way fixed effects estimators found no issues with negative weights, but the sites exhibit a wide range of heterogeneous treatment effects. In the second essay, we found empirically …

Social Media Interaction And Self-Perception In Adolescents And Young Adults With Cancer, Sarah Daniels Jan 2021

Social Media Interaction And Self-Perception In Adolescents And Young Adults With Cancer, Sarah Daniels

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The unique psychosocial needs of adolescents and young adults (AYA) with cancer are often overlooked or left unmet during treatment (Zebrack, 2011). Self-development is an important task for all AYA, and it is often informed by social interaction (Goffman, 1959). Given that social interaction among AYA occurs in offline and online spaces, the role of social interaction on social media for self-development is curious (Calvin, 2020). But examining this relationship also requires thoughtful attention by researchers to adequately describe the population being studied (Davis et al., 2020). As such, this exploratory sequential mixed methods research study sought to address the …
