Building Culturally Responsive Stem Peer Mentoring Relationships Through Virtual Training: A Case Study, Chelsie Marie Dubay Jan 2021

Building Culturally Responsive Stem Peer Mentoring Relationships Through Virtual Training: A Case Study, Chelsie Marie Dubay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

According to the National Science Foundation (2017), women who represent ethnically or racially minoritized backgrounds accounted for only 11% of earned bachelors degrees in science and engineering. To better understand why racially minoritized women do not choose to pursue or fail to persist in STEM programs, one must delve into the intersectional barriers that create and contribute to these disincentives. Using a qualitative, field-based learning experience design following a multi-site case study approach, this study examined racially minoritized female STEM students' experiences within a virtual peer mentoring training program. The aim was to determine how, if at all, the training …

Explanation Techniques Using Markov Logic Networks, Khan Mohammad Al Farabi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Explaining the results of Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Learning (ML) algorithms is crucial given the rapid growth and potential applicability of these methods in critical domains including healthcare, defense, autonomous driving, etc. While AI/ML approaches yield highly accurate results in many challenging tasks such as natural language understanding, visual recognition, game playing, etc., the underlying principles behind such results are not easily understood. Thus, the trust in AI/ML methods for critical application domains is significantly lacking. While there has been progress in explaining classifiers, there are two significant drawbacks. First, current explanation approaches assume independence in the data instances …

Multi-Modal Narrative Practices In Adult Esl: Fostering Investment In Language Learning And Negotiating Racism, Linguicism, & Identity, Mahmuda Sharmin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Language learners identity construction and language learning through narratives (Norton 2010; Johnson 2015) and multimodal technologies (Lam 2006; White 2007) have been found to be effective ways to facilitate ESL learning. Additionally, Multimodal pedagogies and narrative practices in the language classroom facilitate L2 learning, investment in language learning, and learners identity and agency construction (Crandall 2018; Johnson & Kendrick, 2017). Further, racism and linguicism are aspects of language learners lives that affect their language learning trajectories (Corona & Block, 2020; Dovchin, 2019). Few studies, however, examine how multimodal narrative practices in L2 classrooms can foster learners investment in language learning …

Prompting Self-Explanations During The Learning Of Probability: Content-Specific Versus Generic Versus Generic With A Form Of Guidance, Genghu Shi Jan 2021

Prompting Self-Explanations During The Learning Of Probability: Content-Specific Versus Generic Versus Generic With A Form Of Guidance, Genghu Shi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Learners often cannot apply (transfer) the knowledge they learned from instructional settings into a new context. Therefore, their knowledge is likely inert. Research shows that learners must be actively involved in learning construction activities to enable knowledge transfer to occur. Self-explanation is one such constructive cognitive activity that involves explaining learning materials (expository texts, worked examples) to oneself with attempts to make sense of new information. It has been shown to support deep comprehension and knowledge transfer. However, self-explanations usually cannot be spontaneously generated by learners, but need to be elicited by prompts. The prompts can range from generic type …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The problem of learning latent representations of heterogeneous networks with spatial and temporal attributes has been gaining traction in recent years, given its myriad of real-world applications. Most systems with applications in the field of transportation, urban economics, medical information, online e-commerce, etc., handle big data that can be structured into Spatiotemporal Heterogeneous Networks (SHNs), thereby making efficient analysis of these networks extremely vital. In this paper, we propose a spatiotemporal context-aware network embedding framework that jointly captures the spatial regularities between objects and the sequential transition patterns of human mobility. First, we model the heterogeneous urban mobility data collected …

Analysis Of Assessments On Secondary Students' Development And Interpretation Of Models, Alaina L. Appley Jan 2021

Analysis Of Assessments On Secondary Students' Development And Interpretation Of Models, Alaina L. Appley

Graduate Research Papers

As districts are making the shift to three-dimensional learning the development of a coherent set of high-quality task-based assessments has been a challenge. For this research I collected and analyzed twelve of my district's assessments over the scientific skill of modeling from grades seven through 12. The analysis involved two tools developed by NGSS and Achieve.org to determine the extent to which the assessments ask students to perform tasks that are driven by phenomena and use the three-dimensional in service of sense-making, the Task Screener and the Framework to Evaluate Cognitive Complexity in Science Assessments. The findings support what …

Affordance Learning For Visual-Semantic Perception, Chau Nguyen Duc Minh Jan 2021

Affordance Learning For Visual-Semantic Perception, Chau Nguyen Duc Minh

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Affordance Learning is linked to the study of interactions between robots and objects, including how robots perceive objects by scene understanding. This area has been popular in the Psychology, which has recently come to influence Computer Vision. In this way, Computer Vision has borrowed the concept of affordance from Psychology in order to develop Visual-Semantic recognition systems, and to develop the capabilities of robots to interact with objects, in particular. However, existing systems of Affordance Learning are still limited to detecting and segmenting object affordances, which is called Affordance Segmentation. Further, these systems are not designed to develop specific abilities …

Supporting The Performance Of Noongar Language In Hecate, Clint Bracknell, Kylie Bracknell, Susan F. Studham, Luzita Fereday

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

As the first adaptation of a complete Shakespearean work presented entirely in one Aboriginal language of Australia, Hecate is a landmark production in Australian theatre. The Noongar language of the southwest of Western Australia is a critically endangered language impacted by colonisation since the early 1800s and suppressed until the 1970s. Working with an all-Noongar cast learning what is by birthright their mother-tongue, the Noongar language, on a full Shakespearean work presents a range of challenges. Consideration of effective rehearsal strategies to support brave spaces for the cast to flourish holistically, both as language learners and performers, was imperative. As …

Development And Validation Of The Holistic Cognition Scale, Andrei A. Lux, Steven L. Grover, Stephen T. Teo

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This paper introduces a new scale to measure cognitive cultural differences, drawing on the theory of analytic versus holistic thought. Examining culture from a cognitive perspective is a challenge to traditional values-based approaches. Existing measures based on this framework are methodologically problematic and warrant renewal. This paper presents development and validation studies for a new instrument that measures analytic versus holistic cognitive tendencies at the individual level. The scale assesses four previously established dimensions: attention, causality, contradiction, and change. The present work follows well-established scale development protocols and the results show that the 16-item Holistic Cognition Scale (HCS) is a …

Educative Power And The Respectful Curricular Inclusion Of Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Music, Michael Webb, Clint Bracknell

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This chapter argues for the full, respectful curricular inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music in order to promote a more balanced and equitable social and cultural vision of the nation-state in Australian schools. It challenges views that claim Indigenous cultures have been irretrievably lost or are doomed to extinction, as well as the fixation on musical authenticity. We propose that the gradual broadening of Indigenous musical expressions over time and the musical renaissance of the new millennium have created an unprecedented opportunity for current music educators to experience the educative power of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music. …

The Outcomes Of Fifth-Grade Emergent Bi/Multilinguals’ Introduction To A Visual Metalanguage When Constructing Scientific Explanations In Hong Kong, Melanie Williams, Kok-Sing Tang Jan 2021

The Outcomes Of Fifth-Grade Emergent Bi/Multilinguals’ Introduction To A Visual Metalanguage When Constructing Scientific Explanations In Hong Kong, Melanie Williams, Kok-Sing Tang

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The visual mode provides emergent bi/multilinguals an essential resource to construct scientific explanations. Yet, while a metalanguage is used to describe the written mode of scientific language such as, claim, evidence, reason; there is little research that makes students aware of the metalanguage of a visual mode. We propose an introduction to the visual metalanguage will ensure emergent bi/multilinguals better access to the visual mode. This study employs an instrumental case study to examine the introduction of visual metalanguage to a fifth-grade science class. Two cameras record ten emergent bi/multilinguals as they construct scientific explanations in nine lessons. We use …
