Centering Translanguaging And Critical Consciousness In Chinese/English Dual Language Bilingual Education Programs, Zhongfeng Tian, Joanna W. Wong, Suzanne Garcia-Mateus
Education and Leadership Faculty Publications and Presentations
Despite the prevalence of Chinese usage in the U.S. and in the world, Chinese language ranks low in K-12 language instruction. U.S. education policies and programs have historically excluded and disserved Chinese ancestry students. While the current research about language and literacy proficiency in Mandarin/English DLBE programs is warranted, areas of urgency for further examination include the development of critical consciousness and translanguaging pedagogy to educate for equity and justice.

Review: A Reader’S Companion To Mikhail Bulgakov’S “The Master And Margarita, Daniel Brooks
Review: A Reader’S Companion To Mikhail Bulgakov’S “The Master And Margarita, Daniel Brooks
Russian Language Journal
Although Mikhail Bulgakov’s classic The Master and Margarita has become an inevitable fixture of Russian literature survey courses, it can nevertheless present a challenge even for seasoned instructors. As the text repeatedly slips between locales, historical periods, and narrative voices, Bulgakov’s novel seems more and more like a world unto itself. In my experience, there always proves to be something in this world—rewritten Gospels, a moving romance, the gun-toting cat—that will draw undergraduates in. And yet, when a tight syllabus gives me but four classes to tackle the novel’s elaborate system of leitmotifs, allusions, and historical realia, I feel like …

The (French) Creole Turn?, Jonathan Gosnell
The (French) Creole Turn?, Jonathan Gosnell
French Studies: Faculty Publications
In what ways can study of cultural mixing or métissages, often linked to histories of empire, colonization, and assimilation, help to better understand complexities in contemporary French and francophone societies? How can theories of creolization explain ambiguous ethnic, racial, and national phenomena that have long existed but have remained obscure? This article critically examines hybrid cultures that have coalesced as a result of pervasive French presence in the world over the last several centuries. The publications of Histoire mondiale de la France and its English translation France in the World: A New Global History sparked debate both inside and outside …

Whiteness, Discipline, And Educational Disadvantage: A Case For California Schools, Dow Drukker
Master's Theses and Capstones
Over the last thirty years, the student population of schools in the United States have become increasingly more racially diverse, while teachers have remained predominantly white. During this same period, school disciplinary policies and practices have become increasingly punitive. Literature has shown that this shift disproportionately targets students of color. Behavior such as defiance and disruption are now offenses that warrant the suspension or expulsion of a student. These behaviors are subjective in nature. In using their discretion to identify defiance and disruption, teachers may administer discipline in a racially unequal manner. While prior research has documented the emergence of …

The participants who are grade school students from a province in southern Philippines answered questionnaires about their attitude towards and perception of English, played …

A Student-Centered Self-Identity Approach To Harm Reduction In Adolescents, Taylor Bannish
OTD DEx Reports - College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences
"Adolescents are faced with one of the most difficult and vulnerable stages of life. During this stage they are faced with the psychosocial developmental task of forming a self-identity2. Self-identity is an overarching concept that includes one’s goals, values, experiences, and social aspects that provide a sense of direction and meaning to one’s life7,2,1. In response to this need to form a self-identity, teenagers tend to explore different roles, activities, and behaviors5. In doing this, they are particularly vulnerable to being influenced by peers, which can ultimately lead to peer pressure and participation in substance abuse, alcohol, consumption, or other …

As the population of the United States becomes more diverse the ethnic makeup of postsecondary institutions expands. Women of color (WOC) represent a growing number within the academic community earning more postsecondary degrees then men and serve as leaders in higher education throughout the county. The increased presence of WOC inacademic positions of power, such as deans, directors, supervisors, tenured faculty, presidents, etc., indicate America’s progression towards inclusivity. However, colorism, a subset of racism favoring and advantaging lighter skin complexions and disadvantaging darker skin tones, exist as a predictor of socioeconomic status, educational attainment, martial capital, occupational, and interpersonal success …

The World Wide Web provides us with a doorway to explore our world and access to social media; a “place” where we can keep in touch with family and friends and meet people from different cultures. Social media provides us with the ability to communicate using an Avatar, providing us with anonymity. Unfortunately, this anonymity gives people the freedom to unapologetically express their opinions, using any type of language they desire, without fear of repercussions. This study of the social and cultural implications from anonymous, unrestrained comments in a discussion thread will interest communications experts, psychologists, academics, and peacekeepers because …
