An Examination Of Romantic Relationship Initiation Strategies Utilized By Young Adults With High-Functioning Autism Or Asperger’S Syndrome, Aaron Loewy
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Individuals with and without High-Functioning Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome (HFA/AS) both show interest in sexuality and/or romance. However, the symptoms of autism, such as difficulties with indirect communication, emotional expression, signaling, theory of mind, and sexuality, can elicit difficulties that make the establishment and maintenance of romances problematic. Despite these challenges, many individuals on the spectrum have reported romantic experiences. To gain a better understanding of how such individuals formed and sustained romantic relationships, seven participants with HFA/AS were interviewed using a semi-structured approach followed by a thematic analysis of their transcribed responses. It was found that common circumstances served …

This comprehensive review piece investigates over two decades of research, reflecting on the crucial role of language in international marketing success. In coding and summarizing 181 articles, this work highlights how language has impacted international-marketing-related outcomes across 19 specific content areas. Those content areas are then grouped into seven broad research themes relating to language: Marketing Communications; Linguistics; Branding; Consumer Behavior; Servicescape and Retailing; Internationalization, Supply Chain and Sales; Bilingualism. We synthesize these themes and the common outcomes of the research. From these themes we highlight challenges to the field and explore future research in language in international marketing.
The Rule Of Technology: How Technology Is Used To Disturb Basic Labor Law Protections, Tammy Katsabian
The Rule Of Technology: How Technology Is Used To Disturb Basic Labor Law Protections, Tammy Katsabian
Lewis & Clark Law Review
Much has been written on technology and the law. Leading scholars are occupied with the power dynamics between capital, technology, and the law, along with their implications for society and human rights. Alongside that, various labor law scholars focus on the implications of smart technology on employees’ rights throughout the recruitment and employment periods and on workers’ status and rights in the growing phenomenon of platform-based work. This Article aims to contribute to the current scholarship by zooming out and observing from a bird’s-eye view how certain actors use technology to manipulate and challenge basic legal categories in labor today. …

Dissertations
Problem
The purpose of this study was to discover the preferred and used English vocabulary learning strategies of Saudi Arabic-speaking English as a Second Language (ESL) learners. In the light insufficient empirical and theoretical studies exploring the complex structure of vocabulary learning by Arabic-speaking ESL learners, this study investigated which strategies students viewed as significant in assisting them in learning new English vocabulary. Finally, the study sought to identify Saudi Arabic-speaking student attitudes toward and motivations for learning English as a second language; and whether these attitudes influenced which vocabulary learning strategies they preferred and used commonly.

Education and Policy Briefs
This research and policy brief uplifts findings from a 2020 survey of 223 California school district leaders. Findings regarding the preparation of beginning bilingual/dual language educators indicate that leaders rated teachers’ linguistic competencies in two languages as the most important ability, followed by teachers’ understanding of bilingualism and biliteracy development and linguistic pedagogical knowledge. Respondents rated beginning bilingual teachers’ preparation to meet the needs of their districts/schools as “moderately well” (M=3.1 out of 5). The brief concludes by identifying policy recommendations for state and local levels as well as for institutions of higher education policies and practice in this statewide …

Language Revitalisation In Gaelic Scotland: Linguistic Practice And Ideology, Woloyat Tabasum Niroo
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
Through their native languages, certain groups of people claim political, social, geographical, and ethnic identity and a legal base for their existence. Colonialism, however, has vanished minority spoken languages in many parts of the world. Additionally, despite claims of a “global village,” the advent of internationalization has further isolated indigenous languages in some parts of the world. Revitalizing and preventing those languages from dwindling from their spoken communities is crucial for scholars of linguistics, sociology, cultural studies, and education. Dunmore, in the book Language Revitalisation in Gaelic Scotland: Linguistic Practice and Ideology, offers profound perspectives on preventing the potential …

Promoting Privilege: Selecting Students For A Public Gifted School, Douglas G. Wren
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
Point of view: I am a cisgender, White male in my sixties. I retired recently after working with children in a professional capacity since the mid-1970s. During my education career, I was an elementary school teacher, gifted teacher, research specialist, and director of research and evaluation in a historically White school district that became majority African American during my tenure.
Value of submission: Numerous educational policies and procedures in the United States benefit children from privileged families over their traditionally underserved counterparts, which include students of color and low-income students. This piece describes a public school district’s inequitable practices related …
How Many Latours Is Too Many? Measuring Brand Name Congestion In Bordeaux Wine, Christopher Buccafusco, Jonathan S. Masur, Ryan Whalen
How Many Latours Is Too Many? Measuring Brand Name Congestion In Bordeaux Wine, Christopher Buccafusco, Jonathan S. Masur, Ryan Whalen
Faculty Scholarship
Firms rely on brand names to market goods to consumers, and consumers rely on brand names to locate goods that satisfy their preferences. If multiple firms are using the same or similar names, consumers may be confused about which product to buy, and firms may not obtain the benefits of their investments in quality. Recently, both firms and scholars in a number of industries have expressed concern about brand name congestion—too many firms clustering around too few terms. This paper applies computational linguistic analysis to chateau names in the Bordeaux wine region to study the degree of brand congestion within …
Better Than Our Biases: Using Psychological Research To Inform Our Approach To Effective, Inclusive Feedback, Anne D. Gordon
Better Than Our Biases: Using Psychological Research To Inform Our Approach To Effective, Inclusive Feedback, Anne D. Gordon
Faculty Scholarship
As teaching faculty, we are obligated to create an inclusive learning environment for all students. When we fail to be thoughtful about our own bias, our teaching suffers – and students from under-represented backgrounds are left behind. This paper draws on legal, pedagogical, and psychological research to create a practical guide for clinical teaching faculty in understanding, examining, and mitigating our own biases, so that we may better teach and support our students. First, I discuss two kinds of bias that interfere with our decision-making and behavior: cognitive biases (such as confirmation bias, primacy and recency effects, and the halo …

Unwilling Or Unable? The Failure To Conform The Nonstate Actor Standard In Asylum Claims To The Refugee Act, Charles Shane Ellison, Anjum Gupta
Faculty Scholarship
Pursuant to its obligations to the international community, the United States provides asylum to individuals fleeing persecution “on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.” For decades, both the Board of Immigration Appeals and federal courts recognized that individuals could obtain asylum based on a fear of persecution at the hands of nonstate actors, so long as the applicant demonstrated that their government was “unable or unwilling” to control the persecution.
As part of a wide-ranging attack on asylum, the Trump administration has sought to eliminate asylum based on nonstate actor persecution. In …
Second Amendment Equilibria, Darrell A. H. Miller
Second Amendment Equilibria, Darrell A. H. Miller
Faculty Scholarship
Equilibrium-adjustment theory, first articulated by Professor Orin Kerr for Fourth Amendment cases, holds promise for rationalizing Second Amendment doctrine going forward. Like the Fourth Amendment, the Second Amendment suggests an initial equilibrium—or actually, multiple equilibria—between government power to possess, use, and control the implements of violence and private power to do the same. And, like Fourth Amendment doctrine, Second Amendment doctrine must contend with both technological and societal change. These changes—e.g., more deadly and accurate weapons, more public acceptance of concealed carry—can upset whatever initial balance of gun rights and regulation there may have been in the initial state. Although …

Exploring The Use Of Gamification In The Teaching And Learning Of English Grammar In A Private Secondary School Classroom In Mombasa County, Lydia Nasike Nabangi
Master of Education
Grammar is fundamental to language. Historically, approaches to teaching English grammar have undergone many changes. However, there is much disagreement as to the effectiveness of different approaches for teaching English grammar to learners since they view English grammar as boring. The world of education is today confronted with the demands of instilling digital literacy and twenty-first-century skills to all learners to function properly in the emerging fourth industrial revolution. Embracing gamification is unavoidable, especially with the emergence of millennials, whose lives are greatly influenced by digital technology and who prefer to study in a fun, engaging, and motivating environment. Thus, …

Exploring The Role Of Literature In English Second Language Acquisition To Promote Speaking Competencies: A Case Of Public Secondary Schools In Moshi Rural – District., Violet Magessa William
Master of Education
The ever-changing demands of English second language learning have impacted many language scholars to find ways that will best address the teaching of English as a second language. The shifting demands require powerful English language teaching approaches that require interactive; learner-centered techniques that transform knowledge into powerful but adaptive forms that can address the lofty demands of the modern classroom. This study, therefore, aimed at finding intervention on English language acquisition in developing learners' comprehensive speaking skills by utilizing literature as a pedagogical resource, it has driven interest among scholars who pioneer its usefulness for possessing a communicative language approach …

Flipped Classroom approach is a new pedagogic approach that leverages educational technology to replace passive learning, which is commonly associated with lecture method of teaching, with active learning, in which students are responsible for producing meaning and finding connections using the content supplied outside of the classroom. The purpose of this action research was to see how the flipped classroom may be used to teach and learn English at a Kenyan public secondary school. Data was collected through document analysis, semi structured interviews, focus group discussions, reflective conversations and lesson observations. Findings from the study indicate that using of the …

Substantial Similarity Substantial Similarity’S Silent Death, Daryl Lim
Faculty Scholarly Works
Copyright litigation involving hit songs like Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” Justin Bieber and Usher’s “Somebody to Love,” and Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” caused many in the music industry to vex over the line between homage and infringement. When are the two works too similar? To many courts and scholars, substantial similarity is “bizarre,” “ad hoc,” and “a virtual black hole in copyright jurisprudence.” Every creative work borrows some inspiration from other works, whether copyrighted or not. Judging when defendants appropriated too much is an inherently opaque and subjective enterprise, but unraveling its mysteries is critical for the flourishing of …

Amplifying Historically Marginalized Voices Through Text Choice And Play With Digital Tools: Toward Decentering Whiteness In English Teacher Education, Jennifer M. Higgs, Steven Z. Athanases, Alexis D. Patterson Williams, Danny C. Martinez, Sergio L. Sanchez
Benerd College Faculty Articles
This article reports on a case study of an English language arts (ELA) teacher education course that prioritized amplification as a method to decenter whiteness in English teacher preparation. The researchers demonstrate how they engaged in designing a course that aimed to use interactive digital technologies and multimodal texts to amplify racially and ethnically marginalized voices in ELA preservice education. Design principles that facilitated amplification included saturation of the learning environment with mediational resources and tools (Gutiérrez & Vossoughi, 2010) and the notion of “low floor and wide walls” (Resnick & Silverman, 2005). The analysis revealed ways in which the …

Testing Privilege: Coaching Bar Takers Towards "Minimum Competency" During The 2020 Pandemic, Afton Cavanaugh
Faculty Articles
The year 2020 was challenging for the bar exam. The longstanding argument that the bar exam is not a fair measure of the minimum competence of someone to practice law was cast into harsh relief and the truth-that the bar exam tests the privilege of its examinees-became startlingly apparent. Not only did 2020 kick off with a devastating global pandemic, but we also saw the rage against systemic racial injustice reach a boiling point just as we were charged with staying in our homes to avoid contracting COVID-19. With a pandemic raging, overt White supremacy on the rise, and racial …

The Map Of It All: Quantitative Mapping Of Foreign Language In James Joyce's Ulysses, Alyssa Krueger
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Readers of James Joyce's Ulysses know that it is a cosmopolitan (multilingual) novel, but most do not know just how many foreign words Joyce used, altered, and inserted throughout the writing process, nor do they know the final tally in the 1922 Shakespeare & Co. edition. This dissertation approaches Joyce's foreign language from a quantitative and genetic perspective, counting all 2,525 foreign words and attributing each to episodes and characters to visualize where and how foreign language manifests in the novel. Genetic data in turn reveals that Ulysses was not always quite so multilingual but instead became more foreign during …

Faith In Strasbourg And Luxembourg? The Fresh Rise Of Religious Freedom Litigation In The Pan-European Courts, John Witte Jr., Andrea Pin
Emory Law Journal
The religious landscape of Europe has changed dramatically in the past two generations. Traditional Christian establishments have been challenged by the growth of religious pluralism and strong new movements of laïcité and secularism. Once powerful religious cultures have been shattered by exposures of clerical abuses and financial self-dealing, leading to emptier pews and waning political influence. Once quiet, homogenous European communities are now home to large groups of new Muslim emigrants, making new demands and sparking strong anti-immigrant movements. Once strictly controlled national borders have opened across Eastern and Western Europe, leading to massive migration and tense local intermixtures of …

Energy Islands: Metaphors Of Power, Extractivism, And Justice In Puerto Rico, Catalina M. De Onis
Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
Energy Islands provides an urgent and nuanced portrait of collective action that resists racial capitalism, colonialism, and climate disruption. Weaving together historical and ethnographic research, Catalina M. de Onís challenges the master narratives of Puerto Rico as a tourist destination and site of “natural” disasters. She demonstrates how fossil-fuel economies are inextricably entwined with colonial practices and policies and how local community groups in Puerto Rico have struggled against energy coloniality and energy privilege to mobilize and transform power from the ground up. This work decenters continental contexts and deconstructs damaging hierarchies that devalue and exploit disenfranchised rural, coastal communities. …

Authoring Self And Redefining Luck: Pathways To Arts Degrees And Professions For College Students Of Color, Shirlie Mae Mamaril Choe
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Educators and researchers have consistently championed the value of arts education in helping to foster greater creativity and innovative thought in students. Despite the apparent social value of arts and creativity, there is a growing negative public perception of the utility of arts education and degrees in the competitive job market. In addition to decreases in arts education funding at the elementary and secondary school levels, the proportion of students pursuing arts-related majors have decreased over the years. This is unsurprising since media outlets like the U.S. News & World Report regularly highlight the top majors for students to pursue …
常德方言區屬的探討, Zehan Wei
常德方言區屬的探討, Zehan Wei
Dissertations from all years

This dissertation explores Little Rock, Arkansas, as a site that provides a surprising perspective for understanding the national history of postwar urban policy. By centering Little Rock, this dissertation joins recent efforts to historicize neoliberalism and serves as a starting point to understanding the role of smaller cities in the history of neoliberalization.

Remembering The Experience Of War: A Sensory Study Of The Vietnam War And Collective Memory, Jacob Randolph
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
The Vietnam War is remembered in a variety of ways. It is remembered as a war against communism, yet one that was also against American ideals of freedom. It is remembered as a war of patriotism, yet one that was also against the numerous military members who fought in it. It is remembered as a war for integration and unity among black and white, yet many African-Americans remember the time period as a war being fought abroad and at home. Memory of the war is obviously contradicting, but then again the 1960s and 1970s oftentimes were.
