Basque Women In Exile: Remembering Their Voices And Impact In Literature Through The Cultural Magazine Euzko-Gogoa, Ziortza Gandarias Beldarrain Jan 2021

Basque Women In Exile: Remembering Their Voices And Impact In Literature Through The Cultural Magazine Euzko-Gogoa, Ziortza Gandarias Beldarrain

World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations

Following the War of 1936, many Basque individuals, families, politicians, artists, and intellectuals left the Basque Country and went into exile. According to José Angel Ascunce, the tragedy suffered by those exiled is revealed by two principles: the geographical breakdown and the breaking of one’s identity. For Basque women specifically, exile brought renewed self-definitions of purpose and identity, as well as expectations imposed upon them by men. This essay will discuss how Basque female writers addressed the tragedy undergone and the roles they took on, from exile, through their participation in the Basque cultural magazine, Euzko-Gogoa (Basque-Will).

The Perpetuation Of Stereotypes In Croatian Public Discourse: “Autistic” As A Pejorative, Jakob Patekar Jan 2021

The Perpetuation Of Stereotypes In Croatian Public Discourse: “Autistic” As A Pejorative, Jakob Patekar

Articles

The way people are spoken or written about has a critical role in how they are perceived, and this in turn influences how they are positioned within a society – belonging to its core, the majority, or being relegated to the margins, the minority. Various authors have reflected on the role of language in dehumanizing, oppressing, and discriminating certain groups, be it the Jewish citizens during the Nazi regime in Germany, the Tutsi in the Rwandan genocide of 1994, black people in the United States since 1619, women throughout history, or gay and disabled people today, to name a few …

Prosodic Interference In Maritime Communication : Nature And Means Of Elimination, Bozhena B. Dokuto, Igor O. Smirnov Jan 2021

Prosodic Interference In Maritime Communication : Nature And Means Of Elimination, Bozhena B. Dokuto, Igor O. Smirnov

International Maritime Lecturers' Association (IMLA) 2021 Joint Conference With IMEC32, ICERS15 and INSLC21

The paper is devoted to the analysis of typical phonological mistakes made by Russian-speaking maritime cadets and the teaching tools enabling maritime English instructors to correct them and to improve the phonological competence of maritime students. Today, addressing the issues of foreign accent in the speech of maritime professionals, one cannot underestimate the importance of the correct implementation of the prosodic system of the language being studied, since the quality of the implementation of a coherent text is undoubtedly the result of the adequate use in speech of both segmented and suprasegmental language means, that is separate phonemes and intonation. …

Anth 110: Introduction To Anthropology: A Peer Review Of Teaching Benchmark Memo, Taylor A. Livingston Jan 2021

Anth 110: Introduction To Anthropology: A Peer Review Of Teaching Benchmark Memo, Taylor A. Livingston

UNL Faculty Course Portfolios

This portfolio examines the extent to which the learning outcomes for Introduction to Anthropology (ANTH 110) were met through course assessments. The primary goal of this course is for students to engage with anthropological content, by introducing students to an anthropological perspective, which requires looking at issues from multiple contexts (holism), and having students add this to their “tool kit” to help them make sense of what they believe, why they believe it, and how to make sense of the world around them and their place in it. The alignment of outcomes and assessment was analyzed through an examination of …

To Teach As We Are Known: The ‘Heart And Soul’ Labor Of Teacher Educators Of Color Working In Pwis, Amanda R. Morales, John Raible

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

In this chapter, the authors outline the ongoing dialogues, thought processes, and pedagogical moves we make as two seasoned colleagues of color attempting to enhance the cultural competence of students through a critical multicultural education course offered at a public university-based teacher education program. We document how we address many enduring moral, ethical, and epistemological questions through our practice that are unique to educators of color working at predominantly white institutions (PWIs). We frame our work within the literature on diversity and social justice pedagogy and link our own work to the broader well-documented challenges faced by many educators of …

Hazardous Weather Communication En Español: Challenges, Current Resources, And Future Practices, Joseph E. Trujillo-Falcón

National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration: Technical Reports and Related Materials

According to recent US Census data, the Hispanic or Latino population represents nearly 1 in 5 Americans today, where 71.1% of these individuals speak Spanish at home. Despite increased efforts among the weather enterprise, establishing effective risk communication strategies for Spanish-speaking populations has been an uphill battle. No frameworks exist for translating weather information into the Spanish language, nor are there collective solutions that address this problem within the weather world. The objective of this article is threefold. First, the current translation issue in Spanish is highlighted. Through research conducted at the NOAA/NWS Storm Prediction Center, situations are revealed where …

Dual Mechanisms Of Cognitive Control: A Hierarchical Bayesian Approach To Test-Retest Reliability, Jean-Paul Snijder Jan 2021

Dual Mechanisms Of Cognitive Control: A Hierarchical Bayesian Approach To Test-Retest Reliability, Jean-Paul Snijder

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Cognitive control, also known as attentional control or executive function, is a set of fundamental processes that are utilized in a wide range of cognitive functioning: including working memory, reasoning, problem solving, and decision making. Currently, no existing theory of cognitive control unifies experimental and individual differences approaches. Some even argue that cognitive control as a psychometric construct does not exist at all. These disparities may exist in part because individual differences research in cognitive control utilizes tasks optimized for experimental effects (i.e., Stroop effect). As a result, many cognitive control tasks do not have reliable individual differences despite robust …

Unmaking Masculine Determinacy : A Postmodern Challenge In Suzan-Lori Parks’ Venus, Usa Padgate Jan 2021

Unmaking Masculine Determinacy : A Postmodern Challenge In Suzan-Lori Parks’ Venus, Usa Padgate

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Venus, a play written by Suzan-Lori Parks, employs unconventional theatrical approaches in retelling the history of a 19th-century freak show attraction. This study examines how the critique of gender bias and sexual manipulations in Venus is explored and projected in ways that can be described as postmodern. Through the subversion of conventional forms and language, the blending of fact and fiction, the pastiches of both low and high generic and linguistic presentations, the liberating of a marginalized voice, and the revision of the philosophical premises that subordinate the female to the male order, the play questions the masculine determinacy …

Agency, Responsibility, And Actor Positioning In Courtroom Narratives, Krisda Chaemsaithong Jan 2021

Agency, Responsibility, And Actor Positioning In Courtroom Narratives, Krisda Chaemsaithong

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Viewing language as a system consisting of grammatical resources for meaning making, this study explores how agency and responsibility are attributed in legal narratives through the lens of transitivity. Drawing upon the opening address of three American trials, the quantitative and qualitative findings indicate that agency and blameworthiness of the individuals on trial are discursively negotiated through starkly different grammatical choices, so that polarized positionings of the same social actors and events are accomplished for the audience. It is argued that such manipulation of grammatical resources exhibits subjective intervention on the part of the presenter and constitutes a prime mechanism …

A Case Study Of Code-Switching Among Thai Waiters In A Cambridge, Uk Restaurant, Nicola Prin Jan 2021

A Case Study Of Code-Switching Among Thai Waiters In A Cambridge, Uk Restaurant, Nicola Prin

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study explores Thai bilingual speakers’ code-switching in a formal work setting. Although code-switching may appear to be random, there is an underlying choice which speakers decide upon when switching between languages: Language proficiency, the initial speaker’s language choice, the setting, and role relationships all contribute to these choices. This study investigates the factors contributing to code-switch decisions by participants within their specific work environment. The main findings show that adopting one language over the other depends on two main factors: first, the initial sequence of the interaction; second, the role relationship that the participants wish to maintain. This study …

Mindfulness And Motivation In Self-Transformation : Thich Nhat Hanh’S Teachings On The Interbeing, Hui Ling Lim Jan 2021

Mindfulness And Motivation In Self-Transformation : Thich Nhat Hanh’S Teachings On The Interbeing, Hui Ling Lim

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper aims to explore the relationship of mindfulness and motivation in self-transformation based on the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh. It discusses mind and meditation, the application and impact of mindfulness on body and mind, the Buddhist’s roots of motivation in meditation, the dynamics of motivation in mindfulness practice and Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings on interbeing. He argues that it is not necessary to hold the original Buddhist intention with the goal to attain enlightenment when practicing mindfulness because mindfulness is not only a means but also an end in itself. My discussion will highlight this interconnectedness of mindfulness …

A Short Text Classification Method Based On Convolutional Neural Network And Semantic Extension, Haitao Wang, Keke Tian, Zhengjiang Wu, Lei Wang Jan 2021

A Short Text Classification Method Based On Convolutional Neural Network And Semantic Extension, Haitao Wang, Keke Tian, Zhengjiang Wu, Lei Wang

Faculty Publications

In order to solve the problem that traditional short text classification methods do not perform well on short text due to the data sparsity and insufficient semantic features, we propose a short text classification method based on convolutional neural network and semantic extension. Firstly, we propose an improved similarity to improve the coverage of the word vector table in the short text preprocessing process. Secondly, we propose a method for semantic expansion of short texts, which adding an attention mechanism to the neural network model to find related words in the short text, and semantic expansion is performed at the …

Perspectives On The Use Of Technology As A Home–School Communication And Parent Partnership Tool, Julie Christine Hirst Jan 2021

Perspectives On The Use Of Technology As A Home–School Communication And Parent Partnership Tool, Julie Christine Hirst

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Effective communication between home and school is known to increase student achievement. Although technology has the potential to change how schools communicate with parents, most existing research focuses on how schools use technology as a pedagogical tool. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to address the identified gap in the literature by exploring parent and educator perspectives on how schools and parents could use technology to encourage home–school communication and parent partnership. The conceptual framework included work in parent involvement, student achievement, and using technology as a communication tool. Epstein et al.’s six types of involvement framework was …

Workplace Experiences Of Migrant Workers In Colorado, Lynann Holly Butler Jan 2021

Workplace Experiences Of Migrant Workers In Colorado, Lynann Holly Butler

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractMigrant workers often endure a variety of abuses in the workplace, including financial exploitation, exposure to toxins, isolation, and lack of access to health care. Although researchers have demonstrated that these circumstances exist for migrant workers in other parts of the world, there was a dearth of research on the lived experiences of migrant workers in Colorado. The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to better understand the lived experiences of migrant workers in Colorado, who are a growing and impactful population in Colorado. The theoretical framework was Rawl’s social justice theory, which purports that no one group of …

For Country And Company: Consolidating Power Through Development And Company Towns In Saudi Arabia, 1947-1969, Andrew Nicholas Czuzak Jan 2021

For Country And Company: Consolidating Power Through Development And Company Towns In Saudi Arabia, 1947-1969, Andrew Nicholas Czuzak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My project demonstrates how the Saudi Arabian government established their control over a dissident Eastern Province. Examining a mixture of ARAMCO, American, and Saudi sources, my thesis aims to expand the historiography of urban history, Saudi Arabia, and company towns in the twentieth century. Through the lens of company towns, urban development, and military modernization, I show how Saudi Arabia was effectively able to disrupt local power structures and replace them with their own. Urban development provides an effective tool through which I assess larger trends in theSaudi-ARAMCO relationship, the ruler-subject relationship, and sedentarization policy during the 1940s through the …

Modeling Rna:Dna Hybrids With Formal Grammars, Natas̆A Jonoska, Nida Obatake, Svetlana Poznanović, Candice Price, Manda Riehl, Mariel Vazquez Jan 2021

Modeling Rna:Dna Hybrids With Formal Grammars, Natas̆A Jonoska, Nida Obatake, Svetlana Poznanović, Candice Price, Manda Riehl, Mariel Vazquez

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

R-loops are nucleic acid structures consisting of a DNA:RNA hybrid and a DNA single strand. They form naturally during transcription when the nascent RNA hybridizes to the template DNA, forcing the coding DNA strand to wrap around the RNA:DNA duplex. Although formation of R-loops can have deleterious effects on genome integrity, there is evidence of their role as potential regulators of gene expression and DNA repair. Here we initiate an abstract model based on formal grammars to describe RNA:DNA interactions and the formation of R-loops. Separately we use a sliding window approach that accounts for properties of the DNA nucleotide …

Retelling Copyright: The Contributions Of The Restatement Of Copyright Law, Jeanne C. Fromer, Jessica Silbey Jan 2021

Retelling Copyright: The Contributions Of The Restatement Of Copyright Law, Jeanne C. Fromer, Jessica Silbey

Faculty Articles

The provisions at issue in the draft Restatement of Copyright Law on which ALI membership will vote at ALI’s upcoming annual meeting are central to copyright doctrine and have been the subject of numerous court decisions over the past several decades of technological and industry change: originality, fixation, categories of copyrightable subject matter, the idea-expression distinction, and authorship and ownership. This abundance of legal activity on copyright law demonstrates the value to the profession of this project retelling copyright. In contrast to the dramatic criticism of this Restatement project alleging political capture or illegitimate law reform, the draft’s provisions are …

Delegation Of Powers: A Historical And Functional Analysis, Richard A. Epstein Jan 2021

Delegation Of Powers: A Historical And Functional Analysis, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

It is important here not to get ahead of oneself, for what is often missing in these elaborate historical debates is a sure sense of why anyone—legislators, judges, lawyers, laypersons, and even scholars—should care about the doctrine in the first place. This Article aims to fill the gap with a functional analysis of the nondelegation doctrine that helps explain where it should have teeth and where it should not. Accordingly, Part I offers a brief account of the evolution of the nondelegation doctrine from a historical—mostly originalist in nature—and doctrinal perspective. Part II develops a simple analytical model to explain …

Ai For Retrospective Review, Catherine M. Sharkey Jan 2021

Ai For Retrospective Review, Catherine M. Sharkey

Faculty Articles

This article explores the significant administrative law issues that agencies will face as they devise and implement AI-enhanced strategies to identify rules that should be subject to retrospective review. Against the backdrop of a detailed examination of HHS’s “AI for Deregulation” pilot and the very first use of AI-driven technologies in a published federal rule, the article proposes enhanced public participation and notice-and-comment processes as necessary features of AI-driven retrospective review. It challenges conventional wisdom that divides uses of AI technologies into those that “support” agency action—and therefore do not implicate the APA’s directives—and those that “determine” agency actions and …

The Current Treatment Of English Phrasal Verbs In Mext-Authorized Textbooks For Japanese Junior High School Students, Natsuko Yamada Jan 2021

The Current Treatment Of English Phrasal Verbs In Mext-Authorized Textbooks For Japanese Junior High School Students, Natsuko Yamada

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This comparative analysis, focusing on the 150 highest-frequency phrasal verbs in the phrasal verb pedagogical list (Garnier and Schmitt, 2015), highlights the limited occurrence across English language textbooks for Japanese junior high school. The spoken and written data of Japanese learners of English (i.e., NICT-JLE and NICE) shows considerable differences in the usage patterns of phrasal verbs compared to native English speakers. These results indicated that Japanese learners’ underdeveloped productive knowledge of phrasal verbs could cause intelligibility problems with native speakers especially in oral communication. In order to overcome the semantic and phonological complexity of phrasal verbs, and to break …

Intercultural Competence And Practice: The Contribution Of Teachers' Beliefs, Values, And Attitudes To The Implementation Of Culturally Responsive Practices And Mandated Eld Professional Development, Deborah Ormsby

Educational Leadership and Policy Studies: Doctoral Research Projects

Public school teachers in the State of Colorado are required to complete 45 hours of English language development (ELD) training to ensure that they are properly supporting the English learners in their school. The literature suggests that teachers’ beliefs, values, and attitudes (intercultural competence) toward English learners matter in their receptiveness to the training and their ability to engage in and implement culturally responsive practices. In order to understand how the ELD training might actually impact a teacher’s ability to support English learners, a mixed methods design comprised of the administration of Ponterotto’s Teacher Multicultural Attitudes Survey followed up by …
