Popping (Post)Modernism: Joaquín Torres-Garcia & Latin America's Pop Art Movement, Alexandra Branscom
Popping (Post)Modernism: Joaquín Torres-Garcia & Latin America's Pop Art Movement, Alexandra Branscom
Scripps Senior Theses
Even though the canon of Western Art History has attributed the Pop movement to the US and the UK, artists from around the world have made significant contributions to pop art and formed their own Pop movements. This includes the Latin American pop artists Felipe Ehrenberg (Mexican), Antonio Henrique Amaral (Brazilian), and Juan Dávila (Chilean), who, between the years 1968 and 1974, fled right-wing political unrest of their respective home countries and gained artistic education in dominant, imperialistic countries. These artists subvert the capitalistic, adverting language of pop art to promote the localized political sensibilities of their home countries and …
The Language Of Democracy, Xenophobia, And The Rise Of The Far Right In France And Spain After The 2015 Migration Crisis, Jamie Berkson
The Language Of Democracy, Xenophobia, And The Rise Of The Far Right In France And Spain After The 2015 Migration Crisis, Jamie Berkson
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis examines the relationship between immigration and far right-wing popularity in Europe, specifically France and Spain after the 2015 migration crisis. Comparing data from several European Union countries after 2015, a pattern is identified that when immigration increased, so did the representation of far right-wing parties. This thesis then details a nuanced analysis of two case studies, and the underlying reasons why far right-wing parties gained popularity in France and Spain. This thesis also examines the roots of present-day democracy in France and Spain, and how they contribute to current social understandings of national identity, which have led to …

First paragraph
There are several oppressive cultural paradigms in Mexican culture that try to subject women. These cultural formulations are forged through historical events, in this case the colonization of Mexico. The two of the most important feminine archetypes in Mexico are “The Virgin of Guadalupe” and “La Malinche”. Both effigies of femininity are fundamentally anchored …
Shaping The Lives Of Little Ones Developmental Equipment Project, Marilyn Tyre
Shaping The Lives Of Little Ones Developmental Equipment Project, Marilyn Tyre
Occupational Therapy Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Premature infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) may experience extensive hospitalizations due to prematurity and medical complications requiring interventions to sustain life and support physiological development. NICU staff are often focused on immediate medical concerns for these infants and may not consider the development and play needs for these long term hospitalized infants. Occupational therapists are aware of the importance of play and supporting the parental role and co-occupations between the infant and parents. This capstone paper discusses the Shaping the Lives of Little Ones Developmental Equipment Project for infants, nurses, and parents designed to provide opportunities for …
What Judges Can Do About Implicit Bias, Jerry Kang
What Judges Can Do About Implicit Bias, Jerry Kang
Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association
“Implicit bias” was not well known in legal communities twenty years ago. But now, the idea of implicit bias circulates widely in both popular and academic discussions. Even the casually interested judge knows a great deal about the topic. Still, even as the problem of implicit bias has grown familiar, potential solutions remain out of focus. Specifically, what can judges do about implicit bias, in their capacities as managers of a workplace, as well as vessels of state power?
In 2009 I wrote a Primer for the National Center for State Courts, which described the challenge of implicit bias to …
The Value Of Intuition In Judging: A Case Study, Joseph Kimble
The Value Of Intuition In Judging: A Case Study, Joseph Kimble
Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association
If you were to ask legal readers to rate the value of intuition in deciding close cases, I suspect that most of them would not put it toward the top of their list. Surely that would be true for self-described textualist judges, who would probably give it only a slim role, if it has any at all. They prefer to concentrate on words and syntax and context (verbal context, not situational context) and to weigh all the cues and clues. Intuition is just too squishy, subjective, unconstraining, and prone to manipulation (as if textualism were not1).
At any rate, I’ve …

Meditations In An Emergency: Collaborating Online In Narratives Of Illness And Care, Jayda Coons
Honors in Practice Online Archive
This article describes a collaborative writing project involving narratives of health and caregiving. An interdisciplinary seminar titled “Narratives of Illness and Care” examines literary and medical narratives to better understand disease, therapeutic communication, empathy, and the social determinants of health. During the COVID-19 crisis, however, the instructor adapted course structure and curricular assignments to help students make meaningful connections with their immediate circumstance. The author reflects on the significance of the project during a time of global upheaval and suggests changes for future iterations.

Forming Oral History Researchers: Diversifying And Innovating Honors Experiential Learning Across Campus, Myrriah Gómez, Anna M. Nogar
Honors in Practice Online Archive
This article presents a transdisciplinary, cross-campus collaboration among honors and non-honors students in the field of humanities. Trained in oral history methodologies and integrated as IRB-certified researchers into an ongoing (2018–present) project, a cohort of students (n = 34) participate in place-based, community-engaged learning and research involving Hispanic New Mexicans, known as Nuevomexicanas/os. Drawing on the tenets of experiential learning as a mode of honors discourse, the authors describe how this challenging ethnographic project serves to bring a diverse group of learners together while deepening interpersonal, intercultural, and interdisciplinary connections. Results indicate that students benefit from working with more diverse …
Imagining The Future In Irish Budgets 1970–2015: A Mixed-Methods Discourse Analysis, Ewan Macdonald, Brendan K. O'Rourke, John Hogan
Imagining The Future In Irish Budgets 1970–2015: A Mixed-Methods Discourse Analysis, Ewan Macdonald, Brendan K. O'Rourke, John Hogan
Articles
Annual budgets are key to constituting and governing imagined futures. This paper examines how the signifier ‘future’ is constructed within the Irish budget speeches delivered by finance ministers to parliament between 1970 and 2015. To investigate the discourses of these budget speeches, we employ post-structural discourse theory operationalised through two methods: close reading and corpus-linguistic analysis. Close reading is used to identify the discourses employed and how meanings of signifiers were partially fixed at different moments. This was further examined using corpus-linguistics, specifically a collocate analysis of the word ‘future’, allowing further close examination of such collocates in context. Thus, …
Applying A Food Studies Perspective To Irish Studies, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire
Applying A Food Studies Perspective To Irish Studies, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire
Books/Book Chapters
Food studies and Irish Studies stem from the same ‘studies’ phenomena and share many similarities in their journeys from the margins to becoming established academic disciplines. A common feature of the new academic studies movement, whether French, gender, postcolonial, cinematic, African, Irish or food is their interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary nature. They become more than any one discipline and scholars within these new fields continuously investigate from various angles, often adopting ‘self-reflexivity’ as an approach. Stereotypical postcolonial notions of the drunken or ‘stage Irishman’, or food’s association with the quotidian domestic, and therefore, feminine, led some academics up until relatively recently …

Self-Efficacy Supports Of Third Grade Reading Teachers In The Highest Reading Performing Schools In Georgi, Tami Mcclain
Self-Efficacy Supports Of Third Grade Reading Teachers In The Highest Reading Performing Schools In Georgi, Tami Mcclain
Ed.D. Dissertations
Students needed to be able to read in elementary school to be successful in school and in life. Meanwhile, teachers graduated from teacher preparation colleges and not able to teach reading once they were in their own classrooms. Teachers who developed self-efficacy in the teaching of reading were the best teachers to teach reading. The purpose of this qualitative interpretive study was to determine third grade reading teachers’ perceptions of how school leaders, professional development, and instructional coaching supported the development of self-efficacy in reading instruction. I conducted this study in three schools in a school district with the highest …

Saving Substantial Similarity, Daryl Lim
Saving Substantial Similarity, Daryl Lim
Faculty Scholarly Works
Substantial similarity, an analysis of the similarity between two works, is the fulcrum of copyright infringement. Recent cases involving Led Zeppelin's signature song “Stairway to Heaven,” the award-winning movie “The Shape of Water,” and Google and Oracle's dispute over computer code all required courts to grapple with this fundamental analysis. This Article reveals that today's copyright plaintiffs have only a one-in-ten chance of winning--the worst in a century--and also discusses the cause of this trend--defendants' devastatingly effective use of pretrial motions and the rise of lawsuits against nonrival defendants. Scholarly debates on substantial similarity typically revolve around the works of …

Scalable Approaches For Auditing The Completeness Of Biomedical Ontologies, Fengbo Zheng
Scalable Approaches For Auditing The Completeness Of Biomedical Ontologies, Fengbo Zheng
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
An ontology provides a formalized representation of knowledge within a domain. In biomedicine, ontologies have been widely used in modern biomedical applications to enable semantic interoperability and facilitate data exchange. Given the important roles that biomedical ontologies play, quality issues such as incompleteness, if not addressed, can affect the quality of downstream ontology-driven applications. However, biomedical ontologies often have large sizes and complex structures. Thus, it is infeasible to uncover potential quality issues through manual effort. In this dissertation, we introduce automated and scalable approaches for auditing the completeness of biomedical ontologies. We mainly focus on two incompleteness issues -- …
Younger Hmong People’S Willingness To Communicate About Depression, Wa Yang
Younger Hmong People’S Willingness To Communicate About Depression, Wa Yang
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This research examines the underlying issues about mental illness, particularly depression within the Hmong community. Previous scholars have focused on the Hmong culture’s origins, mental health status of Hmong refugees arriving in the United States, martial roles and mental health on Hmong females, and comparisons of Hmong traditional healing and Westernized medicine. These studies intersect in fields including psychology, medicine and public health, Hmong history, and social work. However, one missing component to this body of scholarship has been communication. Thus, my study focused on younger Hmong people’s willingness to communicate about depression within their families. Specifically, I conducted semi-structured …
Rule-Following, Enculturation, And Normative Identity, Nicholas Odom
Rule-Following, Enculturation, And Normative Identity, Nicholas Odom
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Rule-following has been a controversial issue in professional philosophical literature since Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations. Many authors have developed accounts of rule-following along different lines, including those that naturalistically reduce rule-following to non-normative phenomena and those that take rule-following to be an irreducible aspect of cognition and agency. Hannah Ginsborg, a prominent contributor to rule-following literature, has developed a partially reductive account of rule-following, combining features of both reductionist and nonreductionist accounts. But naturalizing or internalistic theories of rule-following, or even Ginsborg's partial reduction of rule-following, ignore important facets of what it is to follow a rule, particularly its social …

The Sound Of Identity: Audios And Hashtags As Nexuses Of Practice On Tiktok, Lindsey Wright
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This study investigates TikTok audios and hashtags through the lens of digital literacy studies, using Ron Scollon's nexus of practice as a theoretical framework. The researcher sought to investigate literacy practices on TikTok, such as how lurkers and posters interact with the app in ways that both define and are defined by their individual identities. Relative to other social media platforms, there is a dearth of research on TikTok. This study contributes to the gap while also building off the findings of Kaye et al., who investigated authorship and (mis)attribution on the app, and Sachs et al.'s claim that Goffman's …
A Literary Analysis Of Magic: A Dissection Of Medieval Icelandic Literature, Jordan T. Williams
A Literary Analysis Of Magic: A Dissection Of Medieval Icelandic Literature, Jordan T. Williams
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The goal of this project is to understand the realities of how magic was perceived during a Christianized Iceland, specifically during the medieval era when sagas and poems were recorded in Iceland. I accomplish this through literary analysis in conjunction with previous research on runic inscriptions and Old Norse mythology. I reveal that there is much more to be uncovered about the realities of paganism in medieval Iceland, and that the authors of Icelandic sagas had a large misunderstanding of pre-Christian paganism and magic. This argument is manifested through close readings of major Icelandic works, such as Hávamál, Volsunga saga …
The Language Of Personas: Poetic Masks In Confessional And Black Arts Poems, Grecia Espinoza
The Language Of Personas: Poetic Masks In Confessional And Black Arts Poems, Grecia Espinoza
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This thesis considers Confessional poetry and Black Arts poetry against the backdrop of the political and social culture of the 1950s that influenced the styles of these two major poetic movements. I examine Sylvia Plath's and Nikki Giovanni's distinct poetic personas and the language they employ in relation to each other as representatives of confessional and Black Arts poetry, two poetic styles often thought to be inherently opposed to each other, one personal and one political. I identify connections between these seemingly different poets and movements through close readings of key poems by Plath and Giovanni that situates them within …
The Lived Experience Of Chronic Pain: On The Contributions Of Phenomenology In Understanding Chronic Pain Disorders, Riley C. Smith
The Lived Experience Of Chronic Pain: On The Contributions Of Phenomenology In Understanding Chronic Pain Disorders, Riley C. Smith
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Chronic pain disorders are estimated to affect a significant proportion of the global population. These disorders are often debilitating and pose a substantial challenge to the everyday life of those affected. Modern medicine has made great strides in understanding the physiological processes involved in chronic pain. However, chronic pain is more than merely a physiological process. Chronic pain is an embodied mode of being-in-the-world that manifests in multiple aspects of lived experience, from the ability to perform day-to-day tasks to the relationship between body and self. Consequently, it is essential to cultivate a rich appreciation of chronic pain as a …

The Struggle Of Indigenous People Of The Lower Rio Mayo, Northwestern Mexico For Water Resources: An Overview And A Critical Assessment, Arthur D. Murphy, Diana Luque, Angelina Martínez-Yrízar, Alberto Búrquez Montijo
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
To irrigate the 6.5 million hectares of land of the Mayo River Valley, Sonora, Mexico uses nearly 77% of its water. Sonora is home to seven indigenous groups, with over 110,000 indigenous people living on their ancestral, though largely reduced, territories. The Mayo River Valley is the ancestral land of the Mayo (Yoreme). The 65,000 Mayo who live along the river provide the region with its cultural identity. However, official plans for river water focus on high yield, high value crops, and urban water use. The result is a hydrological crisis for indigenous people in the river valley. Over 90% …
