People, Places, And Things: The Relationship Between Presence, Demographic Factors, And Self-Concept On A University Campus, Lydell E. Kerbo Jr

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Within the framework of ecological psychology, environments are places, defined as landscapes of affordances, or the array of potential actions that can be executed. The feedback between direct perception-action and use of affordances results in the sense of presence in place. According to previous research, increased presence has been correlated with greater attachment and connectedness with the place as well as beneficial psychological states in a campus setting. However, it is unclear what factors, such as demographics, may influence differences in engagement with campus affordances, and hence, presence among individuals. The aim of the study is to investigate the relationship …

Combination Of Facebook Prophet And Attention-Based Lstm With Multi- Source Data For Indian Stock Market Prediction, Pavan Nagesh

Dissertations

The stock market prediction has been the subject of interest to various researchers and analysts due to its highly unpredictable nature and serves as a perfect example for time series forecasting. Over the years deep learning models such as Long-Term Short-Term Memory and statistical models such as Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average have shown promising results in predicting future stock prices. But the results from these models cannot be generalized as they fail to incorporate the dynamics of the market and influence of several external factors such as political, social, investor's emotion, etc on stock markets. Recently Facebook’s creation of the …

“I Am Strong. Mentally Strong!”: Psychosocial Strengths Of International Graduate Students Of Color., S. Andiavalli, L. Dianne Borders, Lori E. Kniffin Ph.D.

Leadership Faculty Publications

Positioned at a unique intersection of managing academic pressures and embodying racial and ethnic minority identity status, international graduate students of color (IGSCs) are frequent targets of multiple stressors. Unfortunately, extant counseling literature offers counselors little information on the psychosocial strengths IGSCs employ (e.g., strong familial bond, friendships) to cope with such stressors. To address this gap, interviews with eight IGSC participants were conducted and analyzed using interpretive phenomenological analysis and the lens of the intersectionality framework. Five psychosocial strengths were identified—familial support, social connections, academic aspirations and persistence, personal growth and resourcefulness, and resistance and critical consciousness. Recommendations for …

Deconstructing Compulsory Realpolitik In Cultural Studies: An Interview With Alexa Alice Joubin, David Kenley, William Sewell Jan 2021

Deconstructing Compulsory Realpolitik In Cultural Studies: An Interview With Alexa Alice Joubin, David Kenley, William Sewell

Research & Publications

How might we de-colonize hegemonic knowledge production about East Asia and its relationship with the West? This interview with Alexa Alice Joubin draws on new perspectives on cultural exchange in her book, Shakespeare and East Asia (Oxford University Press, 2021), which promotes treatment of Asian performing arts as original epistemologies rather than footnotes to the white, Western canon, and theory. We also present her latest thinking on multidisciplinarity. Her work, including Race (Routledge, 2019), has sought to deconstruct what she calls “compulsory realpolitik”—the conviction that the best way to understand non-Western cultures is by interpreting their engagement with pragmatic politics. …

The Fourfold Route To Empirical Enlightenment Experimental Philosophy’S Adolescence And The Changing Body Of Work, Robert Barnard, Joseph Ulatowski, Jonathan M. Weinberg Jan 2021

The Fourfold Route To Empirical Enlightenment Experimental Philosophy’S Adolescence And The Changing Body Of Work, Robert Barnard, Joseph Ulatowski, Jonathan M. Weinberg

Faculty and Student Publications

The time has come to consider whether experimental philosophy’s (“x-phi”) early arguments, debates, and conceptual frameworks, that may have worn well in its early days, fit with the diverse range of projects undertaken by experimental philosophers. Our aim is to propose a novel taxonomy for x-phi that identifies four paths from empirical findings to philosophical consequences, which we call the “fourfold route.” We show how this taxonomy can be fruitfully applied even at what one might have taken to be the furthest edges of possible applications of x-phi in metaphysics and formal philosophy. Ultimately, the fourfold route helps us understand …

The Neo-Latin Supplements To Virgil’S Aeneid, 1400–1700, Luca A. D'Anselmi Jan 2021

The Neo-Latin Supplements To Virgil’S Aeneid, 1400–1700, Luca A. D'Anselmi

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, I examine the Neo-Latin supplements to Virgil’s Aeneid (1400–1700), in particular, Pier Candido Decembrio’s Liber Decimus-Tertius Eneidos (1419), Maffeo Vegio’s Supplementum (1428), Jan van Foreest’s Exequiae Turni (1651), and the Supplementum ad Aeneida (1698) of Simonet de Villeneuve. This thesis is a contribution to the ongoing discussion surrounding the nature of classical supplementation in Neo-Latin texts. While advancing new readings of each of the supplements, I argue that previous definitions of supplementation and previous scholarly approaches to each of the Virgilian supplements are insufficient. In addition, I make available several of the supplements for the first time …

The Spread Of International Borders As A Prelude To The Spread Of International Borders During Covid-19, David E. Toohey Jan 2021

The Spread Of International Borders As A Prelude To The Spread Of International Borders During Covid-19, David E. Toohey

International Journal of Peace Studies

This article analyzes how Covid-19 has impacted borders and xenophobia. In particular, it looks at how four countries with generally right-wing politics, but not necessarily right-wing viewpoints, have used xenophobia to deal with Covid-19: The United States, Japan, Brazil, and Australia. This paper chronicles the expected rise in blaming other countries for the spread of Covid-19 with unexpected consequences. Rather than solidifying national borders and constituencies in the face of an international threat through xenophobia, right-wing countries have instead created a successful border creation process with little room to expand. The options seem to be a fragmentation of these countries …

Language Abilities Of Children Who Qualify For Both Speech Therapy And Play Therapy, Rylee Atkins Jan 2021

Language Abilities Of Children Who Qualify For Both Speech Therapy And Play Therapy, Rylee Atkins

2021 Honors Symposium

• Interprofessional collaboration in the educational setting is vital to a holistic approach to addressing a child’s individual needs. Despite the benefits of interprofessional practices (IPP), collaboration in the educational setting can be challenging. Some challenges that impede IPP from occurring in the school setting include time constraints and awareness of roles; however, interprofessional practice can be an effective way to set a child up for success (Kerins, 2018). There is substantial evidence that supports the idea of collaboration within services for the well-being of the child (Choi & Pak, 2006; Ellis et al., 2005; Johnson, 2016). Counselors and speech-language …

Bimodal And Bilingual: Language Characteristics Of Asl And English Users In Deaf Education, Caitlin Bumpass

2021 Honors Symposium

Background:
• Understanding how language develops in children who are learning two languages can provide a better understanding of language development in general.
• There is an abundant amount of research regarding language skills of children who are deaf or hard of hearing (d/hh); however, it is unclear if researchers are using a similar definition when describing the characteristics of bimodal/bilingualism.
• Bimodal bilingualism is the use of both an oral language and a sign language, which in the U.S. often includes the ability to perceive and produce both American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken and/or written English.

Purpose:
• …
