Applying An Ecological Perspective To Interprofessional Education: Attitude Changes In Students Of The Tri-Alliance, Angela M. Cecil

Health Sciences Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In spring 2020, three partnering academic programs of the "tri-alliance"—occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech-language pathology—immediately transitioned from hybrid interprofessional education(IPE) to uniprofessional, online learning experiences due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This transition presented opportunity to compare attitude changes and understand student perceptions about interprofessionalcollaboration between two tri-alliance student groups: Case 2018, N = 119 and Case 2020, N = 95. By incorporating the Bioecological Theory of Human Development (BTHD) and the Ecology of Human Performance (EHP), a comparative mixed methods case study merged quantitative results from a natural experiment and qualitative findings from a case study to learn about …

Secondary School Mathematics Students Exploring The Connectedness Of Mathematics: The Case Of The Parabola And Its Tangent In A Dynamic Geometry Environment, Margo Kondratieva, Christer Bergsten

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Drawing on the Semiotic-cultural approach and the Anthropological theory of the didactic, this paper discusses how exploration of historically framed conceptualizations of mathematical objects can establish bridges between different mathematical areas such as calculus and Euclidean geometry. A classroom intervention study in two secondary mathematics class-rooms involving dynamic geometry software tools to support the construction of a parabola and its tangent and aiming at the development of representational flexibility between algebraic/ functional and geometrical approaches, illustrates how students may benefit from participation in such explorations.

The Role Of Play In Early Child Development: An In-Depth View, Misty Bone Jan 2021

The Role Of Play In Early Child Development: An In-Depth View, Misty Bone

Integrated Studies

Albert Einstein once said, “Play is the highest form of research.” Play is a crucial component in a young child’s overall maturation as it relates to the five domains of development. Through exploration, discovery, and opportunities to create and grow one’s imagination, play fosters many learning experiences. Research of founding theorists such as Vygotsky, Piaget, Montessori, Frobel, Steiner, and Parten suggest that a direct correlation can be made between the influences of play and a child’s overall development in the five domains. This review will define play and the five domains of development while looking at the various influences related …

The Old And The New: Considerations In Arabic Historical Dialectology, Alexander Magidow Jan 2021

The Old And The New: Considerations In Arabic Historical Dialectology, Alexander Magidow

Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications

Arabic historical dialectology has long been based on a historical methodology, one which seeks to link historical population movements with modern linguistic behavior. This article argues that a nexus of interrelated issues, centered around a general theme of “oldness,” has impaired this work, and proposes basic principles to avoid the misinterpretation of linguistic data. This article argues that there is a strong tendency to essentialize the idea of linguistic conservatism and attribute it to the groups that have archaic features. Against this view, it proposes that linguistic conservatism should be seen as a failure to participate in otherwise widespread innovations. …

Non-Vibrant Bilingual Rhotics In A Creole-Spanish Contact Scenario, Falcon Restrepo-Ramos Jan 2021

Non-Vibrant Bilingual Rhotics In A Creole-Spanish Contact Scenario, Falcon Restrepo-Ramos

World Languages & Cultures Department Publications

This sociolinguistic study examines the non-vibrant rhotic realizations produced in a bilingual Spanish variety spoken by Creole-Spanish speakers in the Archipelago of San Andres, Colombia. These bilingual rhotic realizations were compared with the languages in contact, the monolingual varieties, Spanish and Creole, in terms of the best acoustic predictors for discriminating between linguistic groups. A discriminant function analysis selected segmental duration and formant frequencies (F3 and F2) as the acoustic correlates with the best predicting capabilities. These acoustic predictors extracted from zero-occlusion rhotics were further contrasted between varieties revealing that the bilingual Spanish is placed in an intermediate position between …

Advanced Education Programs Faculty Publications

The purposes of this chapter are to demonstrate the need for social empathy in a democratic society, identify polarization barriers, and explore how American higher education can be a leading agent for developing social empathy. The United States has seen a recent rise in political tribalism, and it now faces rising antipathy between those holding polarized perspectives. Higher education is uniquely situated to address these problems. Like a mixing bowl, college is a place where students of all backgrounds can be combined in deep discourse at a key point in their psychological development. However, higher education has struggled to fulfill …

Sobre Los Barcos De La Vez, La Vista En Arpón Y Otros Pasajes Oscuros En Los Entremeses Quevedianos, Ignacio Pérez-Ibàñez

Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications

Comparative Legal Rhetoric, Lucille A. Jewel Jan 2021

Comparative Legal Rhetoric, Lucille A. Jewel

Scholarly Works

This paper theorizes a new discipline, comparative legal rhetoric, which can accomplish two important goals. First, in a society broken down by intractable polarization and win/lose dichotomies, comparative legal rhetoric identifies alternative, nontraditional and non-Western ways to communicate and persuade. How we talk is deeply connected to how we see the world. If we take a break from the win/lose argument structure that defines Western legal communication, we can uncover opportunities for understanding and healing. Second, a study of comparative legal rhetoric can generate cross-cultural understanding. This new discipline contains a trove of knowledge about how persuasion works in different …

Watch Your Language: How A School District's Failure To Provide Meaningful Communication Has Impacted Students During The Pandemic, Amy Leipziger

BYU Education & Law Journal

This article examines some of the obstacles that LEP parents have experienced with the NYCDOE during the pandemic, the impact these obstacles have had on their children’s education, and whether the NYCDOE’s refusal to provide language access amounts to a denial of a sound basic education under state constitutional law.12 I chose to focus primarily on New York City because it boasts the nation’s largest school system, with nearly 1.1 million students, and is comprised of 1,876 schools.13 A large share of these students have significant language needs. In New York state, forty-six percent of children in low-income families have …
