Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy For Anxiety In Youth With Autism: Paving The Way To Evidence-Based Practice, Michelle M. Kirkland Jan 2021

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy For Anxiety In Youth With Autism: Paving The Way To Evidence-Based Practice, Michelle M. Kirkland

Theses and Dissertations

Anxiety is one of the most common and debilitating conditions co-occurring with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as it occurs in up to 84% of individuals and can influence poor psychosocial adjustment, disruptions in individual, familial and school functioning, increased emotional and behavioral problems, self-injurious behavior(s), and an overall reduced quality of life (Meyer, Mundy, Van Hecke, & Durocher, 2006; Nadeau et al., 2011; Farrugia & Hudson, 2006; Kerns et al., 2015). To date, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), an evidence-based treatment for anxiety in neurotypical youth, has seen modest, yet limited, promise in treating anxiety in youth with ASD. With extant research …

Birth To Three Language Acquisition: Influences Of Ambient Language In The Montessori Setting, Claudine Jean Campanelli

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

BIRTH TO THREE LANGUAGE ACQUISITION: INFLUENCES OF AMBIENT LANGUAGE IN THE MONTESSORI SETTING Claudine Campanelli Long Island University, New York, 2021 Dissertation Chair: Lynn Cohen, PhD There is an expanse of literature looking at various topics supporting Montessori education, especially in preschool; however, there is a lack of research in infant and toddler Montessori classrooms. Most of the empirical data regarding language acquisition has focused on the child’s acquisition of vocabulary through direct instruction, rather than the learning capability from overhearing a third party in a naturalistic setting. The purpose of this intervention study was to add to the limited …

The Methodological Issues Of The C.S.I Effect And It’S Controversial Impact On Criminal Investigation, Emily Ruben

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

With the rising success of crime-scene related television shows in recent years, and forensic science as a new hot topic in multiple settings, the world of criminal justice faces new complications as this phenomenon continues to grow. This is popularly known as “The C.S.I Effect.” Contrary to belief, much of what the public perceives, or think they know about the operations of law enforcement and the legal system, comes from television. Consequently, as these television programs appeal to greater audiences around the world, increasingly unreasonable expectations are established in the forensic world, both inside and out of the courtroom. In …

Deafness In Healthcare: Bridging The Gap Between Provider And Patient Communication, Marissa E. Geyer, Rachel M. Kleinschmidt, Molly E. Koisti

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Deaf patients are a population at risk of facing complications when seeking healthcare. Deaf individuals experiencing health emergencies face the possibility of not having an interpreter present for their medical evaluations leading to unwanted outcomes. In 2010, there were an estimated 36 million people in the United States who were hearing impaired (Shuler et al., 2014). Due to the prevalence of hearing loss, there is a need for a way to communicate with those who are deaf, especially in emergency medical situations and this unprecedented time of COVID-19. The purpose of this project was to provide a resource for medical …

Boundary Spanning: Its Role In Trust Development Between Stakeholders In Integrated Water Resource Management, Jodi Lynn Delozier, Mark E. Burbach Jan 2021

Boundary Spanning: Its Role In Trust Development Between Stakeholders In Integrated Water Resource Management, Jodi Lynn Delozier, Mark E. Burbach

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

This study sheds light on the importance of boundary spanners in developing the conditions that foster trust between stakeholders in integrated water resource management (IWRM). Boundary spanners routinely reach across organizational borders to build interconnections and interdependencies in order to manage complex problems, inform policy, and encourage knowledge sharing. The importance of the boundary spanning role has been shown in organizational business practices, urban planning, and higher education yet little research exists on its impact in IWRM. The mixed methods approach used in this study involved surveying and interviewing individuals with previous experience with IWRM in Nebraska. The results of …

Constitutional Structure, Institutional Relationships And Text: Revisiting Charles Black's White Lectures, Richard C. Boldt Jan 2021

Constitutional Structure, Institutional Relationships And Text: Revisiting Charles Black's White Lectures, Richard C. Boldt

Faculty Scholarship

Fundamental questions about constitutional interpretation and meaning invite a close examination of the complicated origins and the subsequent elaboration of the very structure of federalism. The available records of the Proceedings in the Federal Convention make clear that the Framers entertained two approaches to delineating the powers of the central government relative to those retained by the states. The competing approaches, one reliant on a formalist enumeration of permissible powers, the other operating functionally on the basis of a broad dynamic concept of state incompetence and national interest, often are presented as mutually inconsistent narratives. In fact, these two approaches …

Spatial Variation Of Larval Ascaridoid Nematode (Nematoda: Chromadorea: Ascaridoidea)Infections In The Black Sea Anchovy (Engraulis Encrasicolus), Gi̇zem Akkuş, Ali̇ Cemal Gücü

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This study evaluates the Black Sea anchovy population infected by parasitic Ascaridoid Nematode larva in the Southern Black Sea. It assesses the larva?s effect on fish body condition, energy stored in the body, and anchovy growth. For this, anchovies sampled on July 10-31, 2018, from 30 different stations were examined, and 11.8% of the 825 anchovies were found infected. The observed infection rate was higher on the western side of the study area, suggesting that this rate may be used as a biomarker for the western stock. Age and size of the anchovies play a significant role in the prevalence. …

Communication At The Core: Exploring Decision-Making When Communication Is At The Heart Of An Organisation’S Strategy Development, Sinead Hewson Jan 2021

Communication At The Core: Exploring Decision-Making When Communication Is At The Heart Of An Organisation’S Strategy Development, Sinead Hewson

Theses

This investigation considers whether the position, territory and scope of the public relations function in organisations influences strategic thinking, decision-making, and results. Scholars say communication is a strategic management function and has a significant role to play (Grunig J.E., Dozier and IABC Research Foundation 1992, pp. 325–356; Kitchen, 1997, pp. 43–73). Yet, the strategic expertise of communicators is neither understood nor acknowledged outside of the sector. The study’s investigation into the issue and level of access to industry opinion-makers adds to the strategy discussion, while the proposed model of Adaptive Communication contributes to new knowledge.

The Just Prosecutor, Brandon Hasbrouck Jan 2021

The Just Prosecutor, Brandon Hasbrouck

Scholarly Articles

As the most powerful actors in our criminal legal system, prosecutors have been and remain one of the principal drivers of mass incarceration. This was and is by design. Prosecutorial power derives from our constitutional structure--prosecutors are given almost unfettered discretion to determine who to charge, what to charge, and, often, what the sentence will be. Within that structure, the prosecutor's duty is to ensure that justice is done. Yet, in exercising their outsized power, some prosecutors have fully embraced a secondary, adversarial role as a partisan advocate at the significant cost of seeking justice.

The necessary reforms of our …

Practical Abolition: Universal Representation As An Alternative To Immigration Detention, Matthew Boaz Jan 2021

Practical Abolition: Universal Representation As An Alternative To Immigration Detention, Matthew Boaz

Scholarly Articles

A federally funded universal representation program can serve as a practical first step toward the abolition of immigration detention and the other harsh enforcement mechanisms that are utilized today. While abolition is typically an ideology espoused by a small subsection of the general population, its purpose can be achieved through a less partisan and broader reaching ideal -- fiscal efficiency and responsibility. By demonstrating that the provision of counsel and other wrap around services is significantly less costly than immigration detention, while also showing that providing counsel and wrap around services is an extremely effective way to ensure compliance, this …

The first section is a self-reflection of identity and why this teacher chose teaching as a profession. The second section is focused on two of their students, one who is immunocompromised, and one who has significant learning challenges, and how they navigated the quarantine during the pandemic through their expression of learning.
