Understanding The Ongoing Dialogues On Indigenous Issues In Canadian Legal Education Through The Lens Of Institutional Cultures (Case Studies At Uqam, Ualberta, And Umoncton), Adrien Habermacher
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This article offers an empirical study of the discourses and attitudes at three law faculties regarding Indigenous issues in legal education. After the catalyst effect of the TRC report, law faculties across Canada are facing the great challenge of fulfilling their role in the process of reconciliation. This article highlights how the modalities of the dialogue in each faculty correspond to each institution’s culture, approached through their history, social space, and sense of mission. Through interviews with faculty members and observations at public events at UQAM, UAlberta, and UMoncton, this article reveals the stark contrasts between the three case studies …

Hunting Down A Lasting Relationship With Canada—Will Undrip Help?, Sara Mainville
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
If Indigenous law is understood at the time of treaty-making, it will reinforce the procedural aspects of dispute resolution through diplomacy and the settlement of “interpretative” difficulties in living within a treaty relationship. The author, who is an Anishinaabe lawyer from Treaty 3, recounts her understanding of how the treaty relationship was to be an experience of using both Indigenous law and principles alongside Canadian law and principles to restore relationships and treaty responsibilities. A Treaty 3 commitment to provide the “Queen’s Government’s ear” to the Anishinaabe treaty partners is explored, along with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights …

Practical Guidance For Studies Using Freelisting Interviews., Shimrit Keddem, Frances K. Barg, Rosemary Frasso
College of Population Health Faculty Papers
Freelisting is a qualitative interviewing technique that has recently grown in popularity. It is an excellent tool for rapidly exploring how groups of people think about and define a particular health-related domain and is well suited for engaging communities and identifying shared priorities. In this article, we outline 7 practical considerations for conducting freelisting studies summarized from 16 articles conducted by the authors at the University of Pennsylvania and Thomas Jefferson University in partnership with community-based organizations and students. Our recommendations can inform study design, data collection, and data analysis for investigators who are interested in using freelisting interviews in …

Quaerens Deum: The Liberty Undergraduate Journal for Philosophy of Religion
Whether abortion and infanticide are permissible has been debated for a long time in philosophical literature and continues to this day. In this paper, I will assume without argument that one’s view about the moral status of the fetus and newborn will determine what side he/she comes down on in this debate. I am also proceeding with the assumption that personhood is not a conventional or linguistically effective device that has little or no connection to reality. Persons exist and personhood itself is real. With that being said, I will defend a more controversial claim that will undoubtedly stir a …

Going Beyond A Pilgrimage: The Feast Day Of Saint George In Lod-Israel, Mustafa Diktaş
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Religion and spirituality are common motivations for travel, with many major tourist destinations having developed largely because of their connections to sacred people, places and events. Pilgrimages are one of the most important forms domestic tourism in Israel and the Palestinian Territories. On November 16 of every year, the church of St. George in Lod is filled with hundreds of worshippers who arrive for the Feast of St. George / Khidr, the day commemorating the translation of his relics to the church at the heart of Lod. Pilgrims travel from Nazareth and Bethlehem and as far away as Jordan to …

For three summers in the late 1930s, Dr. Aleš Hrdlička, the preeminent physical anthropologist in the United States in the first half of the 20th century, led expeditions to southwestern Alaska to investigate the earliest peopling of that region. Curator of Physical Anthropology at the U.S. National Museum at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the acknowledged “founding father” of physical anthropology in the United States sailed north with small crews of young men—whom he called his “boys”—in the summers of 1936, 1937, and 1938 to probe ancient villages, camps, and burial places on Kodiak Island and throughout the Aleutian …

Incorporating A Flipped Classroom In A Medical Spanish Course Designed With Role-Playing Experiential Learning, Rose Vallejo
HSC Education Days
The Division of Physical Therapy has offered an elective Medical Spanish course to all 2nd year doctoral students for the last 10 years. The curriculum was recently re‐designed to meet the needs of DPT students who have various levels of linguistic proficiency and to incorporate physical therapy‐specific experiential learning. The students in the course self‐identified as beginner, intermediate, or advanced Spanish speakers with general guidance from the instructor. The students were heterogeneously paired by ability so that advanced and beginner students worked together and homogenously paired so that intermediate level students worked together during the clinically‐based experiential lab sessions. Additionally, …

Exploring Latina Students' Understanding Of The Financial Aid Process: A Qualitative Narrative Inquiry, Taina Morales
Exploring Latina Students' Understanding Of The Financial Aid Process: A Qualitative Narrative Inquiry, Taina Morales
Theses and Dissertations
Latina students face numerous barriers within the financial aid application process that impact the success rates of their higher education attainment. The financial aid application process is initiated through the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Unfortunately, the FAFSA, as it is currently written is not beneficial to students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, students of color, and first generation college students, due to the cultural and linguistic hegemony that is present with the FAFSA application (Kimble, 2012; Taylor, 2019). Such hegemonic dominance within the financial aid application process, perpetuates the systemic racism that is present within …

Executives from four Brazilian airlines proactively implemented a 14-month LDP focused on English language fluency and leadership enhancements collectively for leaders within their firms.
Method: Blended learning as proposed by the International Civil Aviation Organization provided the experiential …
Multi-Modal Classification Using Images And Text, Stuart J. Miller, Justin Howard, Paul Adams, Mel Schwan, Robert Slater
Multi-Modal Classification Using Images And Text, Stuart J. Miller, Justin Howard, Paul Adams, Mel Schwan, Robert Slater
SMU Data Science Review
This paper proposes a method for the integration of natural language understanding in image classification to improve classification accuracy by making use of associated metadata. Traditionally, only image features have been used in the classification process; however, metadata accompanies images from many sources. This study implemented a multi-modal image classification model that combines convolutional methods with natural language understanding of descriptions, titles, and tags to improve image classification. The novelty of this approach was to learn from additional external features associated with the images using natural language understanding with transfer learning. It was found that the combination of ResNet-50 image …

Ethnicity, Issue Voting, And Regime Change In The Gambia; Why Did Yahya Jammeh Lose The 2016 Presidential Election? The Dawning Of Dawning Democracy In The Gambia., Alieu Sanneh
Dissertations
ABSTRACT
In the 2016 presidential election in The Gambia, the opposition coalition party had successfully managed to overthrow an authoritarian government, which has ruled the country for 22 years. Contrary to the notion of the prevalence of ethnic voting in African elections, this study found that ethnicity is not the only issue influencing the voting behavior of Gambian voters. The concerns voters have on human rights abuses by the Jammeh’s admistration has resulted in a regime change. The election was issue-based, even though Gambian voters were split on the question of the economy, their dissatisfaction on Jammeh handling of human …

Chapter 13: Preparing Graduate Students And Contingent Faculty For Online Writing Instruction: A Responsive And Strategic Approach To Designing Professional Development Opportunities, N. Claire Jackson, Andrea R. Olinger
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
This chapter describes a responsive and strategic approach to the development of an asynchronous online mini-course in online writing instruction (OWI) for both graduate TAs and contingent faculty in the University of Louisville’s Composition Program. Demonstrating the importance of responding to local contexts, the authors reflect on the conditions shaping their own course design and, based on their experience, provide suggestions for WPAs who are in similar positions. This reflection is organized around seven key questions for WPAs to consider as they design their own professional development in OWI.

Similarity Measure Selection And Optimization For E-Commerce Product Matching, Maryetta Morris
Theses and Dissertations
Since its birth in 1979, e-commerce has grown to become a generation-defining phenomenon. There are millions of platforms from which online transactions can be made, and billions of products available for purchase. As these numbers continue to grow, there is an increased need to exchange, process, and store data about these products. There are also services such as review aggregators and price comparison sites that rely on collecting and integrating data from all over the web. When combining data from multiple sources, it is important to be able to identify which references refer to the same real-life product. Product matching, …
