Gérard Cornu G. (2000). Linguistique juridique.
Linguistic Means Of Decolonization In Dubliners: Economic And Social Contexts, Souad Khalaf, Nadine Riachi Haddad
Linguistic Means Of Decolonization In Dubliners: Economic And Social Contexts, Souad Khalaf, Nadine Riachi Haddad
Al-Kīmiyā
Language has the power to produce implicit interpretations revealed through deeper analysis of what readers know and what characters say explicitly. Based on many characteristics such as social and economic contexts in which evolve characters in James Joyce’s Dubliners, different interpretations can be made. These will eventually demonstrate how language can decolonize people through their attempt to change or improve their economic and social status. Knowing such contexts also helps readers understand and learn that what characters say can carry a different meaning. In fact, context reflects what surrounds the characters and to which social or economic class they …

This article explores the translator’s personality and its effect on the translation process which may be evident through the personal imprints he/she leaves on the text. Therefore, this subjective factor may affect his/her work and could appear through many personal characteristics that distinguish each translator from his/her peers, such as creativity and intuition. It also points out that it is difficult, or even impossible, for the translator to remain neutral. The article presents a small-scale empirical study that sought to establish a relationship between the types of participants’ personalities and the quality of their translation of one genre of text …

Using Mobile Phones To Improve Young People Sexual And Reproductive Health In Low And Middle-Income Countries: A Systematic Review To Identify Barriers, Facilitators, And Range Of Mhealth Solutions, Anam Shahil Feroz, Naureen Akber Ali, Adeel Khoja, Armish Asad, Sarah Saleem
Community Health Sciences
Background: Globally, reproductive health programs have used mHealth to provide sexual and reproductive health (SRH) education and services to young people, through diverse communication channels. However, few attempts have been made to systematically review the mHealth programs targeted to improve young people SRH in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs). This review aims to identify a range of different mHealth solutions that can be used for improving young people SRH in LMICs and highlight facilitators and barriers for adopting mHealth interventions designed to target SRH of young people.
Methods: Databases including PubMed, CINAHL Plus, Science Direct, Cochrane Central, and grey literature were searched …

Adolescents’ Daily Routines: Reliability And Validity Of The Day-Opp Questionnaire; An Exploratory Study, Yael Fogel, Hadar Gross, Moria Adler, Sara Rosenblum
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Background: Maintaining a balanced and diverse daily routine is one way to ease adolescents’ transition to adulthood. The absence of tools that assess adolescents’ daily routines led to developing the Daily Activities for Youth Opportunity (DAY-Opp) Questionnaire. This research describes the development, reliability, and validity of DAY-Opp as a clinical assessment tool of adolescents’ frequency, independence, and satisfaction with daily activities.
Method: The sample of 117 typically developing adolescents (59 girls and 58 boys aged 11–19 years) divided into three age groups and completed the Hebrew version of the DAY-Opp. We statistically analyzed discriminant, concurrent, and predictive validity …

Developing An Archaeologically Literate Citizenry Through Public Archaeology: Assessing Archaeology Websites, Lisa Marie Catto
Developing An Archaeologically Literate Citizenry Through Public Archaeology: Assessing Archaeology Websites, Lisa Marie Catto
Dissertations and Theses
Assessment has been a growing focus of public archaeology in recent years, however, most assessment has focused on in-person activities with little on digital public archaeology. With the pervasive popularity of digital media, such as websites, among global public audiences and the popularity of websites as a communication tool for archaeologists, it is critical that archaeologists focus on evaluating websites to make this public-facing communications tool as effective as possible. My thesis addressed this gap in assessment by using Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) to assess the messaging on the most popular archaeology websites, defined based on Google ranking. My specific …
The Hermeneutic Interpretation And Understanding Of Meaning As The Precondition Of Phenomenological Cognition, And The Translational Transformation Of Reality, Simon Glynn
Al-Kīmiyā
Language is a system of signifiers, and of the concepts signified by them; concepts which, as de Saussure has shown, are delineated by the relations between the semiotic signs which constitute language. Thus, understood as a system of concepts, then as Wittgenstein, Quine and Derrida et al. recognized, language delineates the thoughts and understanding which it constitutes. Moreover, insofar as Hermeneutic Phenomenologists such as Heidegger recognized, and as cognitive psychologists such as Ames, and the Gestaltists, have demonstrated, our concepts mediate even our most basic perceptions, then language mediates, and thus delineates, our very experiences of the world also.

Dom Juan « Travestito », Sanguineti Traducteur Et Le Déguisement D’Un Classique, Ludovica Maggi
Dom Juan « Travestito », Sanguineti Traducteur Et Le Déguisement D’Un Classique, Ludovica Maggi
Al-Kīmiyā
In this article, Edoardo Sanguineti’s translation of Molière’s Dom Juan serves as a case study for a reflection on the transformative action of translation, based on the interaction of three categories: hermeneutics, temporality and orality. More precisely, the translator’s interpretative horizon – here, specifically, his vision of theatre, translation and the classic – is presented as the source of a transformative handling of orality in translation. Sanguineti’s translative orality is described as disrupted and alienating. Paratext reveals the following influencing factors: a militant function attributed to language, a performative conception of scenic language, a theoretical approach to translation based on …

Al-Kīmiyā
In the context of the positive conditioning of the translator in conflict zones and the development of moral neuroscience, this article explains the generation of morality in the human brain and its ties with the imagination and the imaginary. Since moral dilemmas present often inconceivable and unrealistic situations, it is assumed that the reflection that these dilemmas generate, combined with practical application in the field, contributes to the moral and intellectual development of translators in conflict zones and broader areas of translation. This article first introduces the notion of the imaginary in the resolution of problems faced by these translators, …

L’Empathie : Une Composante Émotionnelle Impérative En Sous-Titrage, Mélissa Mouzannar, Gina Abou Fadel Saad
Al-Kīmiyā
The notion of empathy, so often used today in social psychology, has sparked an increasing interest in recent years among researchers in the field of translation studies. In this article, we will first examine the main historical antecedents of the concept of empathy and study how it manifests itself in translation in general and in subtitling in particular. We will then analyze how empathy, emotional intelligence, culture and translation are related as well as the fundamental role translators play in the translating process. Finally, we will investigate empathy and the translation of nonverbal cues in films.

Transdisciplinary Ai Observatory—Retrospective Analyses And Future-Oriented Contradistinctions, Nadisha Marie Aliman, Leon Kester, Roman Yampolskiy
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
In the last years, artificial intelligence (AI) safety gained international recognition in the light of heterogeneous safety-critical and ethical issues that risk overshadowing the broad beneficial impacts of AI. In this context, the implementation of AI observatory endeavors represents one key research direction. This paper motivates the need for an inherently transdisciplinary AI observatory approach integrating diverse retrospective and counterfactual views. We delineate aims and limitations while providing hands-on-advice utilizing concrete practical examples. Distinguishing between unintentionally and intentionally triggered AI risks with diverse socio-psycho-technological impacts, we exemplify a retrospective descriptive analysis followed by a retrospective counterfactual risk analysis. Building on …

Abstract
The materials presented in this book were developed for an advanced-level content-based Russian language course at Portland State University entitled “Russian Literature of the Twentieth Century: The 1920s.” Literature of this period is a major part of the Russian canon, but is notoriously difficult for learners of Russian to read in the original, due both to its stylistic complexity and the relative obscurity of its historical, political, …
Of Mice And Toddlers: A Cross-Species Investigation Of The Social Motivation Theory Of Autism, Claire Weichselbaum
Of Mice And Toddlers: A Cross-Species Investigation Of The Social Motivation Theory Of Autism, Claire Weichselbaum
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social impairments and restricted, repetitive behaviors. Despite its growing prevalence, ASD remains poorly understood. One explanation for its social symptoms that has gained prominence in recent years is the Social Motivation Theory, which proposes a reduced motivation for social engagement as the underlying cause of impaired social functioning in ASD. While typically developing individuals find social interaction inherently rewarding, this theory suggests that people who develop ASD do not experience the same attraction to social stimuli and therefore miss out on critical social learning opportunities, hampering the development of …

How I Developed As A Qualitative Researcher: A Covid-19 Induced Dissertation Research Shift, Jareau Almeyda
The Qualitative Report Conference
Prior to the global COVID-19 pandemic, my dissertation study aimed to explore how exposure to information systems project management impacts perceptions of computing careers among high school female participants. However, the emergence of the COVID-19 global pandemic and the closure of schools forced the premature end of the study–resulting in the design of a new study. The new study aimed to understand the experiences of teachers and the readiness and sustainability concerns they had after being abruptly transitioned from an in-person teaching environment to a fully online teaching environment. The qualitative data, collected from a ten-item, open-ended questionnaire, underwent a …
Expressive Writing As An Intervention For Math Anxiety In Middle School Students, Angela Ruark
Expressive Writing As An Intervention For Math Anxiety In Middle School Students, Angela Ruark
MLET: The Journal of Middle Level Education in Texas
Math anxiety is a serious concern for educators and students. Students who may otherwise be successful can find themselves incapacitated to think and perform to their abilities due to this issue. Math anxiety negatively affects academic performance and deters students from pursuing math-based careers. This is particularly true for female students. Effective interventions are needed to address these issues. Expressive writing is one such intervention that has shown promise in reducing math anxiety with older students. This study investigated the impact of expressive writing on the math anxiety levels of middle school students according to group and gender. An experimental, …

Article 6.21, Tatiana Stolpovskaya
Theses and Dissertations
Article 6.21 is a short documentary film that aims to examine the state of censorship around queerness in Russia today and its effects on personal lives in the queer community.
Twenty years after Russia decriminalized homosexuality, on June 30th in 2013, President Vladimir Putin signed Article 6.21 "for the Purpose of Protecting Children from Information Advocating for a Denial of Traditional Family Values", also known as the "Gay Propaganda Law". Its broad and ambiguous wording allows the government significant leeway in deciding what kind of public queerness is punishable.
In 2020 Russia passed multiple constitutional amendments that affect many areas …

Integrating L1 In L2 Classrooms: The Case Of Arabic As A Foreign Language In Us Universities, Martin Isleem
Faculty Journal Articles
For many years, instructors and scholars of the Arabic language in American high- er education schools have debated two pedagogical questions: (1) whether or not non-standardized Arabic varieties, Spoken Arabic, should be integrated with Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) in the foreign Arabic classroom, and if so, (2) what that integration should look like (see Al-Batal, 2017). One of the prominent claims of those favoring MSA in the classroom is that MSA is the more prestigious language variety and therefore better represents Arabic literature, religious tradition and culture (Ryding, 1995:226) However, in the last two decades there has been an evolving …

Searching For “Superchief” And Other Fictional Indians: A Narrative And Case Comment On R V Bernard, Naiomi Metallic
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
In R v Bernard, 2017 NBCA 48, the New Brunswick Court of Appeal upheld the lower courts’ reasoning that a Mìgmaw man living in the traditional Mìgmaq hunting territory of St. John, New Brunswick could not exercise his Aboriginal rights to hunt because he could not prove he descended from the particular subgroup of Mìgmaq who were at St. John at the time of contact with Europeans. In deciding so, the Court of Appeal rejected the argument that the Mìgmaq, as a nation, are the appropriate rights holders and ought to be the body deciding who can exercise the Mìgmaw …

Osgoode Hall Law Journal
The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms contains not one but two kinds of equality rights—general equality rights, set out in section 15, and linguistic equality rights, set out in sections 16 to 23—but the relationship between them is not well understood. Do official language rights rest on a distinct set of values, or do they simply instantiate the same general principle expressed in section 15? If the former, what are these values, and how do they relate to other principles of constitutional justice? The matter is further complicated by the need to account for the special constitutional status of …
