“Wepeace” And Women Peacekeeping In The Philippines, Arlyssa Bianca Pabotoy
The Journal of Social Encounters
The “Women’s Agency in Keeping the Peace, Promoting Security” or “WePeace” is an initiative to capacitate selected community women in the Philippines on gender-responsive peacemaking and peacekeeping. This essay describes how the project has helped form women peacekeeping teams and enabled women’s increased participation in existing peacekeeping mechanisms. The community women are from four different areas in the country facing different conflict lines: tribal wars, clan wars or “rido”, internal displacement, and development aggression.

Acquiring English Then Reacquiring Indonesian: A Study Of Family Language Policy, Aris Bahari Rizki, Muchamad Sholakhuddin Al Fajri
The Qualitative Report
This study investigates how family language policies are shaped and developed in five Indonesian scholars’ families who live in England. More specifically, it analyses parents’ attitudes towards children’s bilingualism and second language development focusing on the investigation of factors that can influence parental language ideologies and the patterns of language practices within the families. Data were obtained from participant observations, fieldnotes, and semi-structured interviews. All the data were then analysed using inductive analysis approaches proposed by Cohen et al. (2011) and Thomas (2006) which include reading the transcripts several times, identifying the texts related to the purpose of the study, …
The Effects Of A Treatment Package Of Video Self-Modeling And Phrase Drill Intervention On Improving The Reading Fluency In Students With Asd, Maha Alghamdi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As the incidence rate of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Saudi Arabia appears to increase, the need for evidence-based reading interventions that focus on the reading development of students with ASD increases. Reading fluency has been identified as a critical component of reading development and has been consistently linked with reading proficiency. Interventions to promote reading fluency in schools in Saudi Arabia have focused on promoting the literacy attainment of typically developed students, disregarding students with disabilities. In this study, a treatment package of video-self modeling and phrase drill has been used to improve the students reading fluency …
Psychometric Synthesis Of The Drug Abuse Screening Test 20-Item Version (Dast-20), Erin Johnson
Psychometric Synthesis Of The Drug Abuse Screening Test 20-Item Version (Dast-20), Erin Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Numerous research articles have reported differing data on the psychometric properties of the 20-item version of the Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST-20, Skinner, 1982a). Aggregating this diverse information can lead to a better understanding of how to use and interpret the instrument with clients and research participants. In this psychometric synthesis, evidence of reliability and validity of the DAST-20 scores was aggregated in order to provide a more comprehensive summary of the psychometric properties of the instrument to better inform counseling professionals when using the DAST-20. Overall, the available evidence indicates that the DAST-20 produces reliable and valid scores when …
The Construction Of Identity Through Tattoos: A Semiotic And Performative Exploration Of Trauma, Erin Lionberger
The Construction Of Identity Through Tattoos: A Semiotic And Performative Exploration Of Trauma, Erin Lionberger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this current historical moment, tattoos and tattooing have become a glorified cultural phenomenon that has been thousands of years in the making. The idea that tattoos can be used to express one’s identity is not a new concept — various fields, such as anthropology, cultural studies, and sociology, have studied the relationship between tattoos and identity. In this dissertation, I explore the signification and performative aspects of Auschwitz concentration camp tattoos and 9/11 memorial tattoos, while also considering the changes in meaning and interpretation that occur within and throughout space and time. Chapter one introduces the topic and provides …
Am I Black Enough? – Identity And Belongingness Of Second-Generation African Students, Muna Yusuf
Am I Black Enough? – Identity And Belongingness Of Second-Generation African Students, Muna Yusuf
Educational Specialist, 2020-current
Over the course of the past few years, research regarding Black students has continued to increase. However, a lot of the research regarding Black students has focused heavily on the experiences and outcomes of African American students. Due to the history in the United States, the term Black has become synonymous with African American, leaving out the experiences of many second-generation African children. This explanatory mixed-methods design study examined second-generation African students’ ethnic identity and sense of belonging within the Black community in their school system. This study also compared reported levels of belongingness in college experiences versus high school. …

Trauma-sensitive schools focus on forming supportive relationships and safe spaces which help build resilience in students. School psychologists have been providing professional development opportunities for school personnel. When evaluating a professional development training, collecting data on teacher acceptability is crucial to understanding factors impacting implementation integrity. The present study is a review of existing literature and seeks to understand how teacher feedback is evaluated and what factors teachers report as impacting implementation. Three publications were selected as participants to be analyzed. Synthesized themes found included the importance of providing foundational knowledge, the significant impact of system climate, and the value …

Exploring The Cultural Humility And Practices Of School Psychologists In Virginia, Bailey Brooks
Educational Specialist, 2020-current
This present study investigated the relationship between cultural competency and years of school psychology experience. In addition, this study determined how well school psychologists understand cultural humility. This study aimed to bridge the gap between school psychology research and that of other fields, as well as the paradigm shift from having a cultural competency lens to a cultural humble lens. Results of the present study indicated there is a statistically significant relationship between knowledge of appropriate assessments and interventions for racially and ethnically minoritized students and years of experience. Additionally, no statistically significant relationship was found between other sub-domains of …
Effects Of Background Noise On The Speech Acoustics Of People With Aphasia, Kirsten Dixon
Effects Of Background Noise On The Speech Acoustics Of People With Aphasia, Kirsten Dixon
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the effect of hearing six background noise conditions (silent baseline, pink noise, monologue, lively conversation, one-sided phone call, and cocktail noise) on acoustic measures of speech production during story retells in people with aphasia. Eleven individuals with aphasia and 11 age- and gender-matched control participants took part in the study. Participants heard the background noise conditions through open-back headphones while they retold six short stories. The examiner calculated mean and standard deviation of intensity, mean and standard deviation of fundamental frequency (F0), and speech rate in words per minute. A Matlab application that identified pauses (i.e., periods …
Mental Contrasting With Implementation Intentions As Applied To Motivation In L2 Vocabulary Acquisition, Lindsay Michelle Stephenson
Mental Contrasting With Implementation Intentions As Applied To Motivation In L2 Vocabulary Acquisition, Lindsay Michelle Stephenson
Theses and Dissertations
Mental Contrasting with Implementation Intentions (MCII) is a self-regulation method shown to increase goal achievement through a combination of positive visualization and planning to overcome anticipated obstacles, specifically in time management, physical fitness, smoking cessation, dieting, social interaction, and classroom performance (Duckworth et al. 2013; Oettingen & Reininger 2016) Because second language (L2) acquisition is highly influenced by learner motivation, this study investigated whether MCII could be applied to motivation to acquire L2 vocabulary in beginning Arabic classes. A control group was compared to two treatment groups, one receiving vision-oriented MCII training that asked them to recall what first motivated …

Humor Production And Coping On Distress And Help-Seeking Attitudes Among Polynesian Americans, Augusto D. Gancinia Ii
Theses and Dissertations
There is a need for more psychological studies that inform culture-specific adaptations in psychotherapy among Polynesian Americans. The use of humor has been identified as a potential adaptation in psychotherapy. Humor can be a catalyst for building and strengthening a healthy working alliance between counselor and client. The utilization of humor in therapy has significantly reduced mental health-seeking stigma. Evidence of the use of humor exists among Polynesian people prior to western colonization of Polynesia which suggests humor to be a culturally salient practice. The current study explored attitudes of seeking mental health counseling among Polynesian Americans while investigating the …

The_Instaprep_Project: A Social Marketing Intervention On Instagram To Increase Oral Hiv Prophylaxis In Black Men Who Have Sex With Men, James Q. Simmons
Dissertations
Incidence of HIV diagnoses is higher in Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) than any other socio-demographic population in the United States. BMSM account for 26% of all new HIV diagnoses in the U.S. yet make up an estimated 1% of the U.S population. In 2017, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) predicted 50% of BMSM would be diagnosed with HIV in their lifetime. Oral HIV pre-exposure prophylactic (PrEP) medications developed to prevent sexual transmission of HIV are 95-99% effective. However, Blacks represent only 10% of PrEP prescriptions. Targeted Social Marketing initiatives on Instagram need to be …
Using Sentiment Analysis To Craft A Narrative Of The Covid-19 Pandemic From The Perspective Of Social Media, Taylor Breanna Ray
Using Sentiment Analysis To Craft A Narrative Of The Covid-19 Pandemic From The Perspective Of Social Media, Taylor Breanna Ray
Theses and Dissertations
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, people have turned to social media to share their experiences with the coronavirus and their feelings regarding subjects like social distancing, mask-wearing, COVID-19 vaccines, and other related topics. The publicly available nature of these social media posts provides researchers the chance to obtain a consensus on an array of issues, topics, people, and entities. For the COVID-19 pandemic, this is valuable information that can prepare communities and governing bodies for future epidemics or events of a similar magnitude. However, clearly defining such a consensus can be difficult, especially if researchers want to limit the amount of …
Finding Bert’S Idiomatic Key, Vasudevan Nedumpozhimana, John Kelleher
Finding Bert’S Idiomatic Key, Vasudevan Nedumpozhimana, John Kelleher
Conference papers
Sentence embeddings encode information relating to the usage of idioms in a sentence. This paper reports a set of experiments that combine a probing methodology with input masking to analyse where in a sentence this idiomatic information is taken from, and what form it takes. Our results indicate that BERT’s idiomatic key is primarily found within an idiomatic expression, but also draws on information from the surrounding context. Also, BERT can distinguish between the disruption in a sentence caused by words missing and the incongruity caused by idiomatic usage.

"Obesity is a chronic, non-contagious disease to which attention has been paid worldwide at all times, but current studies are focused on childhood and adolescent obesity after the Covid-19 pandemic. The reason lies in the fact that the younger the child, the greater the risk of developing complications during his life. That is why it is established as a problem to be analyzed from various points of view. Consequently, this study aims to develop a causal analysis of the determinants of childhood and adolescent obesity in post-COVID-19 Ecuador using Neutrosophic Cognitive Maps from a hermeneutical point of view. The authors …

A project is an effort made by a group of actors during a certain period to obtain a product, service, or result. Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to plan and execute activities to achieve the project requirements. Project management implies the need for negotiation between the parties because there may be a contradiction between the parties involved, that is, e.g. between the one who provides the knowledge or goods and the client who receives the final product or knowledge. That is why we propose a neutrosophic solution to manage the contradictions in the negotiation …

Venezuelan migration to neighboring countries in the area is a phenomenon that has been growing in recent years. Ecuador is one of the main countries where migrants who leave Venezuela have gone to reside. They initially arrived in the country as a transit to reach other countries, however, over time many of them decided to settle in Ecuador permanently. Venezuelan migration in our country presents certain characteristics, such as the youth of those who arrive, the high educational level, and the motivation for economic improvement that prompted them to emigrate at first and in a second wave for family reunification. …

The subject “Education and Society” is part of the syllabus of the “Basic Education” program of the Autonomous University of the Andes, Ecuador. This subject has the complexity of linking different aspects of society, some of them not free from contradictions among themselves, and imprecision and uncertainties in assessing students’ performance. For this reason, the concepts and aspects to be evaluated on this subject are represented through the use of plithogenic numbers. Plithogenic sets were defined to model concepts arising from the dynamic interaction among other simpler ones, which may have contradictions with each other and include neutralities or indeterminacies. …

Assertiveness, as an important element of interpersonal competency, is essential in effective conflict resolution. The nursing profession is associated with intense contacts in the therapeutic team, so this profession recognizes the need to use an assertive attitude, which allows defending one's dignity, expressing opinions and emotions for another person. This research aims to assess the assertive competencies of nurses in the city of Guayaquil through neutrosophic statistics. The neutrosophic population proportion was estimated with 99% of reliability, which leads us to conclude that assertive communication skills in nurses in the city of Guayaquil are generally very good in terms of …

An Expert System as Case-Based Reasoning with the interaction of inductive reasoning is useful in predicting and evaluating domains that are difficult to formalize as is the case of the legal one. Since in this domain, a subjective environment is presented where the parties have contradictory points of view. Despite the multiple advantages of its implementation, the design of this type of system presents certain difficulties in establishing which are the predictive attributes that allow determining the similarity between a past situation and the current one, since they are mostly based on Boolean expressions. Which is in contradiction with the …

In-depth interviews are a method widely used by researchers, which are processed once transcribed. Currently, with the development of computer programming, the use of a natural language processing method to analyze such interviews has spread. There are dissimilar programs of various kinds, where lexicons offer highly useful benefits for researchers as they save time and increase efficiency. In essence, these expose how positive or negative a text related to a topic can be. Taking into consideration the usefulness of Neutrosophy for social phenomena and the treatment of indeterminacies, vagueness, and neutralities, it is convenient to establish as an objective of …

Software Engineering is a profession of a technological nature, which takes up theories and knowledge from various sources and addresses the development of quality software at an industrial level. Software Engineering builds knowledge around these software development practices, concretized in the definition of methods, models, and operating schemes that engineers can apply in their professional activities. However, research processes in Software Engineering lack sufficient clarity, mainly due to the level of maturity reached in this discipline. This element hinders the ability of novice researchers to design their research strategies or to recognize the research of excellence. The study is focused …

This investigation aims to assess the degree of efficacy of a breast cancer rehabilitation program in Ecuador. To this purpose, a group of experts evaluated the efficacy of the program using the Delphi method. Once experts were rigorously selected, they used a linguistic scale for assessing the program in different aspects. Every element of the linguistic scale was associated with a neutrosophic number, and finally statistically processed. The advantage to use neutrosophy is the possibility to deal with the imprecision in the assessment and to count on a linguistic scale, which undoubtedly usually is more appropriate to express opinions than …

The homeless are a social group that does not have a profession, job, basic rights, or a house to live in, and have been excluded by society. In Quito, Ecuador, especially in the center, it is common to see people living on the street without a roof or a dwelling to live in. They are referred to by society as the excluded population, marginalized, homeless, among other terms. Living on the street does not imply having to be a victim of aggression, but there are more demonstrations of this type of behavior every day. There are several organizations designed to …
