Climate Communication And Storytelling, Emma F. Bloomfield, Chris Manktelow Aug 2021

Climate Communication And Storytelling, Emma F. Bloomfield, Chris Manktelow

Communication Studies Faculty Research

As part of its Assessment Reports (ARs), the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) publishes Summaries for Policymakers (SPMs) that review key findings on climate science and climate change’s potential impacts. We argue that the IPCC could create more engaging SPMs by incorporating narrative features. This project evaluates AR5’s SPM for narrative opportunities, which are elements that could be narratively restructured or strengthened. Storytelling does not compromise the goals of the IPCC but rather helps public audiences understand and relate to the information. We encourage the adoption of storytelling elements to increase public understanding of and engagement with climate science.

Leveraging Strategic Foresight To Advance Worker Safety, Health, And Well-Being, Jessica M K Streit, Sarah A Felknor, Nicole T Edwards, John Howard

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Attending to the ever-expanding list of factors impacting work, the workplace, and the workforce will require innovative methods and approaches for occupational safety and health (OSH) research and practice. This paper explores strategic foresight as a tool that can enhance OSH capacity to anticipate, and even shape, the future as it pertains to work. Equal parts science and art, strategic foresight includes the development and analysis of plausible alternative futures as inputs to strategic plans and actions. Here, we review several published foresight approaches and examples of work-related futures scenarios. We also present a working foresight framework tailored for OSH …

The Presence Of Art As Technique In Absurdism, John Thompson Aug 2021

The Presence Of Art As Technique In Absurdism, John Thompson

Student Works

Viktor Shklovsky defined and characterized a specific tool in his work “Art as Technique” (1917) that he called “defamiliarization,” the act of making the familiar, unfamiliar, for the purpose of bringing the subject into a new light. The concept of defamiliarization described by Shklovsky was later adopted by the philosophical perspective of absurdism in the 1940’s, a philosophy that believes humanity exists without purpose or reason. Absurdism represents the ideas of Sartre, described best in Being and Nothingness, while also being reminiscent of Shklovsky’s description of defamiliarization by seeking to reshape our perception of the world such that we “make …

Higher Education Scholars Challenging Deficit Thinking: An Analysis Of Research Informed By Community Cultural Wealth, Hannah L. Reyes, Antonio Duran Aug 2021

Higher Education Scholars Challenging Deficit Thinking: An Analysis Of Research Informed By Community Cultural Wealth, Hannah L. Reyes, Antonio Duran

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

As postsecondary scholars continue to challenge deficit-based thinking that harms Students of Color and other minoritized populations, researchers have called for an increased understanding of how they mobilize anti-deficit thought in scholarship and practice. As one example of a theory that pushes against deficit perspectives, Yosso’s community cultural wealth (CCW) framework has risen in popularity. To better comprehend how scholars apply CCW in higher education literature, this content analysis investigated research that examined, broadened, and operationalized the CCW framework. In particular, we analyzed 85 peer-reviewed journal articles. Findings revealed which forms of capital were most prevalent in studies, to whom …

Linguistic Estoppel: A Custodial Interrogation Subject’S Reliance On Traditional Language Customs When Facing Unknown Expectations For Legally Efficacious Speech, Taylor J. Smith Aug 2021

Linguistic Estoppel: A Custodial Interrogation Subject’S Reliance On Traditional Language Customs When Facing Unknown Expectations For Legally Efficacious Speech, Taylor J. Smith

BYU Law Review

For various reasons, speakers often communicate indirectly, hiding their words’ true meaning beneath an apparent surface meaning. For example, a woman trying to brush off her co-worker’s date invitation might respond, “I have to prepare for a presentation tomorrow.” While the words’ surface meaning doesn’t relate to the date invitation, the hearer usually understands the underlying message—that is to say, the words’ function differs from their form. However, because the law’s language ideology requires directness and surface-level meaning, lay-speaking interrogation subjects often have difficulty effectively invoking their Miranda rights. Because the legal system’s search for determinacy often results in reliance …

Strategies For Raising Low Test Scores Of Minority Students, Shanika Y. Mcclendon Aug 2021

Strategies For Raising Low Test Scores Of Minority Students, Shanika Y. Mcclendon

Masters Theses

Abstract

This project is an in-service professional development to prepare teachers for implementing effective strategies for raising minority test scores on standardized tests. These strategies focus on the development of vocabulary and on students’ self-efficacy. The literature shows that the failure for African American and minority students to be successful on standardized test is likely due to lack of support, resources, and adequate preparation. Furthermore, the literature reveals that most of these tests are probably biased toward these students’ cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Studies also show other factors such as stress, stereotyping, depression, and anxiety. Taking into consideration these factors, …

Small Satellite Conference

In the context of fierce competition arising in the space economy, the number of satellites and constellations that will be placed in orbit is set to increase considerably in the upcoming years. In such a dynamic environment, raising the autonomy level of the next space missions is key to maintaining a competitive edge in terms of the scientific, technological, and commercial outcome.

We propose the adoption of an AI-based autonomous agent aiming to fully enable spacecraft’s goal-oriented autonomy. The implemented cognitive architecture collects input starting from the sensing of the surrounding operating environment and defines a low-level schedule of tasks …

Early & Late Erp Responses To L1 & L2 Emotion Words, Brenda Lizeth Guerrero Aug 2021

Early & Late Erp Responses To L1 & L2 Emotion Words, Brenda Lizeth Guerrero

Theses and Dissertations

The thesis aims to explore bilingual emotion word processing. Participants performed a lexical decision task and decided whether presented letter strings displayed on the computer screen were legal words or nonwords. Stimuli consisted of positive emotion (i.e., hope), negative emotion (i.e., sad), and neutral (i.e., umbrella) words, as well as emotion-laden words (e.g. death, puppy). Reaction time and participant accuracy were collected as behavioral measures. In addition, participants’ electrophysiological responses were recorded. Specifically, the early posterior negativity (EPN) and late positive complex (LPC) components were recorded. Participants’ language dominance was measured using the Bilingual Dominance Scale (BDS) (Dunn & Fox-Tree, …

El Testimonio Literario Traducido: Retos Y Desafíos., Jocelyn Madelein Silva Aug 2021

El Testimonio Literario Traducido: Retos Y Desafíos., Jocelyn Madelein Silva

Theses and Dissertations

Translation is one of the oldest professions in the history of humanity. Without it, it would be impossible to access other civilizations historical, social, and cultural records. The most translated text worldwide is the Bible. One of the literary genres that has not received much attention is the testimony. This literary genre is important because it provides a voice to those who do not have it. In this thesis, four testimonies from Puentes, a Mexican-Chicano journal of literature, culture, and art, are translated into Spanish. Besides the translations, this thesis addresses the history of translation and the testimony as a …

An Automated Method To Enrich Consumer Health Vocabularies Using Glove Word Embeddings And An Auxiliary Lexical Resource, Mohammed Ibrahim, Susan Gauch, Omar Salman, Mohammed Alqahtani

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background

Clear language makes communication easier between any two parties. A layman may have difficulty communicating with a professional due to not understanding the specialized terms common to the domain. In healthcare, it is rare to find a layman knowledgeable in medical terminology which can lead to poor understanding of their condition and/or treatment. To bridge this gap, several professional vocabularies and ontologies have been created to map laymen medical terms to professional medical terms and vice versa.

Objective

Many of the presented vocabularies are built manually or semi-automatically requiring large investments of time and human effort and consequently the …

Results and analysis showed a significant shift in trend for the volume of tweets on mental health over time. There was also a notable increase in the volume of tweets …

Special Education Preservice Teachers Culturally Responsive Teaching Self-Efficacy: A Mixed Methods Study, Krystal Lewis-Pratl Aug 2021

Special Education Preservice Teachers Culturally Responsive Teaching Self-Efficacy: A Mixed Methods Study, Krystal Lewis-Pratl

Theses and Dissertations

The racial and ethnic composition of our nation and schools are changing. Yet the demographics of teachers in the United States do not reflect the growing diversity that exists within classrooms today. There have been increases in the culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) student population over the last two decades; however, these changes have not been realized in the diversification of educators in the field. Disproportionality data of CLD students in special education amplify the need to train all preservice educators to be culturally responsive in their practices in an effort to reduce the number of CLD learners who may …

Health Website Evaluation - An Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Perspective: Assessing Quality And Cultrability Of Health Websites In A Covid-19 Pandemic: A Literature Review., Selma Kum Sing, Daniel Mcdonough, James Charles

Australian Indigenous HealthBulletin

Introduction

Health Websites have been used to improve the health and wellbeing of people since the internet was widely available to the world’s populations. The development of websites by health practitioners, hospitals, and governments has continued to grow over the past 20 years. Due to the restriction of movement and gatherings for populations globally caused by Covid-19, there has been a reliance on health information being disseminated via health websites. However, there has been little investigation into the appropriateness of health websites for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Aim

Review literature on digital resources and evaluate health websites based …

“Wepeace” And Women Peacekeeping In The Philippines, Arlyssa Bianca Pabotoy Aug 2021

“Wepeace” And Women Peacekeeping In The Philippines, Arlyssa Bianca Pabotoy

The Journal of Social Encounters

The “Women’s Agency in Keeping the Peace, Promoting Security” or “WePeace” is an initiative to capacitate selected community women in the Philippines on gender-responsive peacemaking and peacekeeping. This essay describes how the project has helped form women peacekeeping teams and enabled women’s increased participation in existing peacekeeping mechanisms. The community women are from four different areas in the country facing different conflict lines: tribal wars, clan wars or “rido”, internal displacement, and development aggression.
