Aung San Suu Kyi’S Defensive Denial Of The Rohingya Massacre: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Denial And Positive-Image Construction, Idhamsyah Eka Putra, Hema Preya Selvanathan, Ali Mashuri, Cristina Jayme Montiel

Psychology Department Faculty Publications

In December 2019, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) accused the Myanmar government of genocide against Rohingya Muslims. Represented by Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar authorities denied such accusations. To understand how a political leader can deny ingroup wrongdoings, we unpacked Suu Kyi’s ICJ speech and analyzed her defensive rhetorical style through critical narrative analysis. We aimed to identify and describe the denial strategies Suu Kyi used as well as how she maintained a positive ingroup image to support her position. Our findings showed that Suu Kyi engaged in interpretative denial of genocide by arguing that …

A Model To Facilitate Transformative Learning In Learner Nurses At Nursing Education Institutions, Tebogo A. Tsimane Aug 2021

A Model To Facilitate Transformative Learning In Learner Nurses At Nursing Education Institutions, Tebogo A. Tsimane

Dissertations

Transformative learning is a learner-centered process of learning that actively engages learners in self-examination and critical reflection on assumptions and results in the development of competence and self-confidence in new roles and relationships that bring about change in specific environments, rather than rote learners who are inherently deficient, lacking change attributes such as clinical reasoning and judgment.

The purpose of the study is to describe and evaluate a model with guidelines to facilitate transformative learning in nursing education institutions. A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual research design for theory generation was used. The study was conducted in four phases. Phase …

Simulated Clinical Experience: An Investigation Of Emotion Understanding And Management, Neena W. Jones Aug 2021

Simulated Clinical Experience: An Investigation Of Emotion Understanding And Management, Neena W. Jones

Dissertations

Many investigators have documented that lack of emotional intelligence (EI) in professional nursing correlates with patient dissatisfaction, negative patient outcomes, and litigation. However, much less information is available to nurse educators for an effective instructional strategy to increase EI skills, specifically emotion understanding and management (the most influential branches of EI) in nursing students. Grounded in the theory of EI and the theory of simulation, the purpose of this quantitative quasi experimental study was to introduce educational technology as a useful strategy for influencing EI in a convenience sample of 88 second semester students in a baccalaureate program. Research questions …

Assessing Oral Language When Screening Multilingual Children For Learning Disabilities In Reading, J. Marc Goodrich, Lisa A. Fitton Ph.D., Jessica Chan, C. Jamie Davis

Faculty Publications

Multilingual children represent a rapidly growing population of students in U.S. schools. However, identification of language and learning disabilities for students from different linguistic backgrounds is complex, leading to frequent misidentification of multilingual learners for special education. This article provides guidance on how special education teachers, speech-language pathologists, and other practitioners (e.g., school psychologists) can utilize each other’s expertise to accurately assess language and literacy skills of multilingual learners. Five key lessons learned from research on identification of language disorders are presented, along with discussion of why these are important when screening multilingual children for learning disabilities in reading. Specifically, …

Re-Imagining Remediation: Problematizing Adolescent Literacy Remediation, Michelle Lague Aug 2021

Re-Imagining Remediation: Problematizing Adolescent Literacy Remediation, Michelle Lague

Virginia English Journal

This article explores the unique literacy needs of adolescent learners and challenges the traditional practice of literacy remediation, often tied to standardized test scores, in U.S. public schools. A call for more responsive literacy instruction that employs a disciplinary, holistic approach rather than a skills-based, deficit-informed approach is articulated, as well as recommendations for practice in literacy instruction informed by research on literacy identity development. As we begin to imagine our schools in a post-COVID world, we must rethink our instruction and move toward a model of literacy that is more relevant, more responsive, and, above all, more human.

An Introduction To The Culturally Responsive Education Model (Crem): A Personal And Professional Journey To Reflective And Transformative Pedagogy, Monica R. Manns

Virginia English Journal

The Culturally Responsive Education Model (CREM) is a framework by which educators can recognize, digest, and implement cultural responsiveness in their classrooms and school communities. Based on the research of James Banks, Gloria Ladson-Billings, Zaretta Hammond, Marva Collins, Bell Hooks, Geneva Gay, James Comer, and Paulo Freire, the CREM serves as a tool, a practitioner’s guide to culturally responsive teaching and learning, with specific focus on content integration (the curricular and programmatic expansion to celebrate and acknowledge the contributions of diverse groups); knowledge construction (helping students understand how people create beliefs based on their diverse biographies while validating students’ funds …

“What Have I Got In My Pocket?” – Tolkien And The Tradition Of The Rings Of Power, Thomas Honegger Aug 2021

“What Have I Got In My Pocket?” – Tolkien And The Tradition Of The Rings Of Power, Thomas Honegger

Journal of Tolkien Research

The question of where Tolkien found his inspiration for the One Ring has occupied fans and scholars alike for decades, and many rings real, fictional or legendary have been proposed. My paper takes a fresh look at the evidence and provides an overview of possible sources of inspiration from contemporary literature and archaeology. My research suggests that there was not one single source of inspiration but rather three rings that served as models, each of which contributed an important element to Tolkien’s concept of his One Ring. These models are: The Ring of Gyges, the Ring of Charlemagne, and Wagner’s …

Perceptions Of Race And Ancestry In Teaching, Research, And Public Engagement In Biological Anthropology, Donovan M. Adams, Marin A. Pilloud

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

The concept of race has a complex history in the field of biological anthropology. Despite increased recognition of the racist origins of the discipline, there remains little agreement about what the concept means, how it is used, or how it is discussed. The present study presents the results of a survey of biological anthropologists to investigate the relationship of biological anthropology/ists with race and ancestry. The survey focuses on the areas of research, public engagement, and teaching as related to these concepts. Results indicate that a large majority of biological anthropologists argue for the separation of race (as a social …

Safety And Belonging In Immigrant-Serving Districts: Domains Of Educator Practice In A Charged Political Landscape, Rebecca Lowenhaupt, Dafney Blanca Dabach, Ariana Mangual Figueroa

Publications and Research

Drawing from a context of reception framework, this article asks the following questions: How do educators describe issues of safety and belonging in the context of a charged immigration policy climate? What practices have educators developed to support immigrant-origin youth? And, what are the relationships between educators’ perceptions of safety and belonging and educator practices? We analyze educators’ survey responses administered across six school districts in different contexts across the United States, including the Northeast, Midwest, South, and West. We synthesize four domains of educator practice: signaling affirmation, building shared knowledge and capacity, finding and mobilizing resources, and creating space …

A Taxonomy On Constitutional Court Appointment Mechanisms In Federal Countries, Molly Madden Aug 2021

A Taxonomy On Constitutional Court Appointment Mechanisms In Federal Countries, Molly Madden

Indiana Journal of Constitutional Design

This paper provides a taxonomy of how federal countries appoint judges to their highest courts. Appointment mechanisms involve (1) little or no meaningful input from state government, (2) the states acting in an indirect role, or (3) substantial state government input. Within-group one, countries that allow for little to no meaningful input from state governments, some countries require that one federal body check another federal body during the appointment process, such as the federal executive’s nominees are confirmed by the federal senate. I first evaluate which court or entity in each country answers federalism questions, whether that is a Constitutional …

Evidence-Based Diagnostic Process For Autism Spectrum Disorder In The Patient-Centered Medical Home, Amy E. Stofer Aug 2021

Evidence-Based Diagnostic Process For Autism Spectrum Disorder In The Patient-Centered Medical Home, Amy E. Stofer

DNP and Student Works

Children with concerning features for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) benefit from early intervention services when diagnosis is procured at a younger age and in a shorter timeframe from first concern. A pilot project evaluated the benefit of an interprofessional practice model within a patient-centered medical home to diagnose ASD, rather than traditional practice whereby families are referred to a regional healthcare center. Utilizing the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R), nine children were evaluated over a four-month period. Outcome measures included age at diagnosis, time from first concern to diagnosis, time from referral to diagnosis, billing code generated, and interview time. Data …

‘Gilded Gravel In The Bowl’: Ireland’S Cuisine And Culinary Heritage In The Poetry Of Seamus Heaney, Anke Klitzing Aug 2021

‘Gilded Gravel In The Bowl’: Ireland’S Cuisine And Culinary Heritage In The Poetry Of Seamus Heaney, Anke Klitzing

Articles

Seamus Heaney’s poetry is rich in detail about agricultural and food practices in his native Northern Ireland from the 1950s onwards, such as cattle-trading, butter-churning, eel-fishing, blackberry-picking or home-baking. Often studied from an ecocritical perspective, the abundance of agricultural and culinary scenes in Heaney’s work makes a gastrocritical focus on food and foodways suitable. Food has been recognized as a highly condensed social fact, and writers have long tapped into its multi-layered meanings to illuminate socio-cultural circumstances, making literature a valuable ethnographic source. A gastrocritical reading of Heaney’s work from 1966 to 2010, drawing on Rozin’s Structure of Cuisine, shows …

The Academic Status Of Librarians In The University Libraries In Nigeria: Myth Or Reality?, Clement Ajidahun Aug 2021

The Academic Status Of Librarians In The University Libraries In Nigeria: Myth Or Reality?, Clement Ajidahun

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The paper is a critical assessment of the faculty/academic status of librarians in university libraries in Nigeria in order to determine the level of parity with the faculty staff. The paper uses seven criteria that are comparable with the benchmark of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) for determining the academic status of librarians. It is argued that even though librarians enjoy parity with the lecturers in the areas of appointment, promotion, sabbatical, leaves, salaries to some extents, they are largely not accorded academic status that is comparable with the lecturers in the following areas: Headship of the …

Overcoming Text In An Age Of Textualism: A Practitioner's Guide To Arguing Cases Of Statutory Interpretation, Robert J. Gregory Aug 2021

Overcoming Text In An Age Of Textualism: A Practitioner's Guide To Arguing Cases Of Statutory Interpretation, Robert J. Gregory

Akron Law Review

How do I construct an argument, consistent with textual primacy, that achieves my desired result?" This Article attempts to provide the practitioner with an answer to this question. First, the Article describes the historic movement from purpose to text in the interpretation of statutes. In doing so, the Article notes a critical feature of textualism as currently configured - that it permits some flexibility (more than many people realize) in the interpretation of statutes. The Article next discusses the impact of the textual movement on the process of arguing cases of statutory interpretation. In particular, the Article sets forth three …

America: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly Comparisons: A Case Study Of The Representation Of “America” In Preservice Teacher Lectures, Kristal Curry, Suzanne Horn

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

Theories and discussions around historical consciousness explore the myriad ways our identities and contexts shape our interpretations and understandings of the past. In this paper, narrative and historical consciousness will be used as a lens to understand the choices pre-service teachers make in the way they “define” America within their lectures. A total of 16 recorded 20-minute lectures from six social studies pre-service teachers were transcribed and coded for their insight into how these future teachers taught about America. Each of the pre-service teachers was white, between the ages of 20-25, considered (themselves) middle class, and were preparing to teach …
