Objectives Of Particles In The Uzbek And English Languages, Gulrukh Kakhkhorova
Philology Matters
This article is devoted to one of the auxiliary groups of words used in the English and Uzbek languages – particles. The British and Uzbeks live in distant lands, belong to different language families, and speak different language systems; naturally, they differ in their closeness to each other in terms of word grouping.
It is known that in the modern Uzbek literary language there are six types of words meaning due to suffixes, some of which are added to the word, and some are separated from the word with a hyphen. Given the above, the heterogeneous nature of the particle …

Ciudad, Movimiento Y Transformación: "23 Segundos" En Dos Tiempos, Mariana Pensa
South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

Mash Maker: Improvisation For Student Studios, Ryan Slone, Bree Mcmahon
Learn X Design Conference Series
As design educators, we feel it’s imperative to prepare students for the wicked problems of the 21st century. Design Futures, the briefing papers released by AIGA in 2018, anticipates a complex future where design solutions must be increasingly open-ended to accommodate many layers of uncertainty. In an effort to model such unpredictable constraints, we developed the Mash Maker project, a design charrette that explores the collision of time and form through a system of carefully devised prompts. The conditions encouraged first-year design students to utilize improvisation methods, iteration, and collaboration while underscoring the value of process over outcome. Music provided …

From Eyes To Ears How To Deal With The Acoustic Element ‘Voice’ As A Visual Designer, Daniela Hensel, Birgit Bauer, Stefanie Voß
Learn X Design Conference Series
As part of the ‘software evolution’ (Mens, 2008), acoustic rather than visual interfaces are increasingly developing into the decisive contact point in the interaction between the product or service and the user. Voices, ‘VUI’s, play an important role the design of communication, yet communication designers are not yet firmly established in this field and, for example, the process of voice selection is often described as a particular hurdle especially when the selection needs to align with strategic parameters of a brand. This raises several questions: What role can communication designers play in the future in the complex field of designing …

Critical reflection, addressing students’ attitude, beliefs and values related to pressing topics in the world, plays a crucial role in developing ethical sensitiveness and critical design literacy in design education. Critical reflection is provoked by discussing self-made photos, as is demonstrated in the research method Photovoice. This paper considers Photovoice in design education for its ability to foster learning through self-guided critical reflective interactions with peers based on self-made photos. Research on how to support this is lacking. This paper addresses this gap by studying students engaging in self-guided Photovoice assignments. Results consist of adapted steps for Photovoice in education …

Tuberculosis Screening And Education In The Urban Public School District, Nikolaos S. Moraros
Tuberculosis Screening And Education In The Urban Public School District, Nikolaos S. Moraros
Theses
Tuberculosis (TB) is the world's deadliest curable communicable infectious disease. The eradication of TB is a significantly important intractable global public health challenge for health agencies at all levels. Global migration, cultural-socioeconomic factors and increase of multidrug-resistance tuberculosis (MDR-TB) affect the epidemiology of TB in the United States and other countries worldwide. Studies have shown that increase in TB knowledge and understanding contributes to early TB screenings/diagnosis, interventions and treatments, result in reducing MDR-TB, rates of TB transmissions, relapse, morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this project is: (1) to develop a TB screening risk assessment protocol for the Urban …

Best Teaching Practices For Providing Culturally Sensitive And Inclusive Nursing Education: Nurse Educators' Perspectives, Christine L. Sommers
Dissertations
This paper explored problem-based learning and cultural diversity, critical thinking and clinical judgment and cultural diversity, and nurse educators' perceptions of implementing culturally diverse and inclusive nursing education. The results of this exploration are presented in three articles (Chapters 2-4). In Chapter 2, a synthesis of literature regarding strategies for problem-based learning with culturally diverse students was described. Studies in nursing literature have not specifically focused on the needs of culturally diverse students when implementing problem-based learning. Nurse educators need to consider their own culture and their students' culture when implementing problem-based learning. They also need to dialogue together about …

Development And Implementation Of A Bilingual Counseling Certificate Program, Claudia Interiano-Shiverdecker, Derek Robertson, Elias Zambrano, Ashley Morgan, Jacqueline Cantu Contreras
Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
The ever-growing population of Spanish-speakers in the United States increases the need for counselors to provide services in languages other than English. Yet, very few counselor education programs offer training specifically aimed at providing bilingual counseling services. The authors introduce important elements of bilingual counseling training and describe the implementation of these features into a certificate designed to train competent, bilingual clinical mental health and school counselors. Implications for counseling pedagogy, practice, supervision, and research are discussed.
Adding Context And Constraint To Corpus Linguistics, Jeffrey W. Stempel
Adding Context And Constraint To Corpus Linguistics, Jeffrey W. Stempel
Brooklyn Law Review
Corpus linguistics presents an exciting tool for improving interpretation of documentary language. But it would be a mistake to overvalue the tool or to use it as grounds for ejecting consideration of other data from the interpretative task. While properly operationalized corpus linguistics analysis represents an advancement over traditional textualism, it remains subject to the same problems that plague excessively rigid textualism that refuses to give consideration to contextual evidence of meaning. To be most effective in achieving accurate and just interpretative results, corpus linguistics, like traditional reading of documentary language, requires context. This includes not only the context of …
Corpus Linguistics And The Law: Extending The Field From A Statistical Perspective, Stefan Th. Gries
Corpus Linguistics And The Law: Extending The Field From A Statistical Perspective, Stefan Th. Gries
Brooklyn Law Review
During the last 5–10 years, corpus-linguistic applications have slowly become more widespread in matters of legal interpretation; specifically, we see more court cases in which corpus-linguistic data are brought to bear on the (original) ordinary/public meaning of expressions in legal texts (in briefs and judicial opinions), but also more academic research focusing on if/how corpus-linguistic methods can shed light on the plain/ordinary meaning of words in a legal text. While this development is welcome, it also comes with shortcoming/risks, some of which are now hotly debated in recent and forthcoming law review articles. In particular, there is a whole family of …
Big Data And Accuracy In Statutory Interpretation, Brian G. Slocum
Big Data And Accuracy In Statutory Interpretation, Brian G. Slocum
Brooklyn Law Review
Scholarship is increasingly devoted to improving the “accuracy” of statutory interpretations, but accuracy is a contingent concept dependent on interpretive perspective. If, for instance, a scholar focuses on the language production of the legislature, she may seek to improve the methodology of statutory interpretation through a more sophisticated understanding of the legislative process. Thus, the scholar may argue that one can assess the reliability of the different types of legislative history by focusing on the actors and processes that produce them. Conversely, a scholar might focus on the language comprehension of some speech community, such as the one comprised of …
Mechanical Turk Jurisprudence, Shlomo Klapper
Mechanical Turk Jurisprudence, Shlomo Klapper
Brooklyn Law Review
This paper argues that data-driven interpretation creates a “Mechanical Turk” jurisprudence: a jurisprudence that appears mechanical but in fact is thoroughly human. Its contribution to the literature is twofold. First, it articulates an intellectual history of data-driven interpretation: data-driven tools have been adopted because society associates quantification with a mechanical objectivity and because objectivity is at the center of debates over statutory interpretation. Second, it criticizes surveys as an interpretative tool: in addition to a host of practical execution problems, surveys misunderstand the concept of “ordinary meaning” and threaten to undermine the value of faithful agency.
