Faculty Research 2021

Aging has emerged as the greatest and most prevalent risk factor for the development of severe COVID-19 infection and death following exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The presence of multiple co-existing chronic diseases and conditions of aging further enhances this risk. Biological aging not only enhances the risk of chronic diseases, but the presence of such conditions further accelerates varied biological processes or "hallmarks" implicated in aging. Given growing evidence that it is possible to slow the rate of many biological aging processes using pharmacological compounds has led to the proposal that such geroscience-guided interventions may help enhance immune resilience …

Who Is A Wise Person? Zhuangzi And Epistemological Discussions Of Wisdom, Shane Ryan, Karyn Lai Jul 2021

Who Is A Wise Person? Zhuangzi And Epistemological Discussions Of Wisdom, Shane Ryan, Karyn Lai

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This essay articulates the contribution that the Zhuangzi can make to contemporary epistemological discussions of wisdom. It suggests that wisdom in the Zhuangzi involves, in part, correctly distinguishing the "heavenly" (or the naturally given) from human artifice. It is important for humanity to understand naturally given conditions (e.g., seasons, climate, forces, mortality) to grasp what is within, and what beyond, our initiatives. To enable this, we need to be openly engaged with the world, rather than approach it with rigid convictions about outcomes or goals. We characterize such openness and readiness to engage as an attitude, that of "epistemic humility." …

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease. While increased nutrient intake and sympathetic activity have been associated with the disease, the pathogenesis of NAFLD remains incompletely understood. We investigated the impact of the interaction of high dietary fat and sugar intake with increased beta-adrenergic receptor (β-AR) signaling on the activity of nutrient-sensing pathways and fuel storage in the liver. C57BL/6J mice were fed a standard rodent diet (STD), a high-fat diet (HFD), a high-fat/high-sugar Western diet (WD), a high-sugar diet with mixed carbohydrates (HCD), or a high-sucrose diet (HSD). After 6 week on …

Role Of Nhe3 In The Intestine And Thick Ascending Limb Of The Kidneys, Jianxiang Xue Jul 2021

Role Of Nhe3 In The Intestine And Thick Ascending Limb Of The Kidneys, Jianxiang Xue

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The sodium-hydrogen exchanger isoform 3 (NHE3, SLC9A3) mediates most Na+/H+ exchange in the gastrointestinal tract and the kidney, where it plays crucial roles in Na+ and fluid absorption as well as acid-base homeostasis. Whole body NHE3 knockout (NHE3-/-) mice show overt absorptive defects in both the intestine and kidneys. Genetic mutations of NHE3 gene in humans are associated with congenital sodium diarrhea (CSD). In the kidneys, NHE3 is expressed in the proximal tubule (PT) and the thick ascending limb (TAL). Whole kidney-specific (PT and TAL) NHE3 knockout (NHE3Pax8cre) mice and PT-specific NHE3 knockout (PT-NHE3-/-) mice have shown the importance of …

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

Insulin resistance and insufficient insulin secretion are well-recognized contributors to type 2 diabetes. A potential role of reduced insulin clearance has been suggested, but few studies have investigated the contribution of insulin clearance while simultaneously examining decreased insulin sensitivity and secretion. The goal of this study was to conduct such an investigation in a cohort of 353 non-Hispanic White and African American individuals recruited in the Microbiome and Insulin Longitudinal Evaluation Study (MILES). Participants underwent oral glucose tolerance tests from which insulin sensitivity, insulin secretion, insulin clearance, and disposition index were calculated. Regression models examined the individual and joint contributions …

Baghdad Science Journal

The present study aims at assessing the effects of chronic kidney disease (CKD) on thyroid hormone and leptin by evaluating the level of: leptin hormone along with thyroid hormone in CKD patients. The study has beenconducted on 70 subjects, 50 patientswith an age range between 20-50 years (25 males and 25 females) who were diagnosed to have CKD stage-5, and 20 normal controlswhoseages ranged between 20-48 years (10 males and 10 females), who attended the Nephrology and Transplant Center in Medical City of Baghdad-Iraq from April 2018 to July 2018. The study showed a highly significant (P<0.01) increase in TSH level in CKD patients in comparison with controls. While T3 and T4 levels observed highly significant decrease (P<0.01) in CKD patients in comparison with their control groups;on the other hand, in Leptin levels, it has been demonstrated a highly significant (P<0.01) increase in CKD patients compared to the controls. Also there was a significant (P<0.05) positive correlationbetweenTSH and Leptin, while the results showed a highly significant (P<0.01) negative correlationbetween T3, T4 and Leptin. To conclude, this study confirms that thyroid dysfunction and hyperleptinemiahave been found to be very common in CKD patients and reveals the significant association between CKD progression and thyroid dysfunction and hyperleptinemia.

Roles And Regulation Of Satellite Cells In Skeletal Muscle Regeneration, Sydney Vlasman Jun 2021

Roles And Regulation Of Satellite Cells In Skeletal Muscle Regeneration, Sydney Vlasman

University Honors Theses

Skeletal muscle has an innate ability to self-regenerate in response to certain stimuli. In the case of trauma, muscle resident stem cells are required to meet the regenerative needs of the tissue. These resident stem cells, called satellite cells (SCs), are crucial in the regenerative process following injury; understanding the major factors which regulate satellite cell activity can provide valuable insight for regenerative medicine. The ability to implement and properly activate satellite cells has immense potential in the treatment of conditions including trauma, degenerative disorders, and age-related sarcopenia. This review will discuss the current understanding of satellite cell-mediated regeneration and …

Three Degrees Of Freedom Robotic Arm And Its Digital Twin Using Simulink – A Bibliometric Analysis, Bharath Suthar Mr., Arunkumar Bongale Dr, Satish Kumar Dr, Anupkumar Bongale Dr

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The 3-degree Digital Twin robotic arm for freedom can diagnose the joints off-board by placing a torque in the robotic arm joint. MATLAB, Simulink®, SimscapeTM, and Simscape Multibody were the basis of this model. Virtual space with a virtual robot arm was connected to a physical space that was a 3D printed replica of the virtual space and robot arm, built using Unity (a modern Game Engine). The arm in the Digital Twin model was created using the hardware prototype’s dimensions, which were then used to simulate a real-world situation. With its revolute joints, the arm has a certain degree …

Development Of The Infant Gut Microbiome Predicts Temperament Across The First Year Of Life, Molly Fox, S. Melanie Lee, Kyle S. Wiley, Venu Lagishetty, Curt A. Sandman, Jonathan P. Jacobs, Laura M. Glynn

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Perturbations to the gut microbiome are implicated in altered neurodevelopmental trajectories that may shape life span risk for emotion dysregulation and affective disorders. However, the sensitive periods during which the microbiome may influence neurodevelopment remain understudied. We investigated relationships between gut microbiome composition across infancy and temperament at 12 months of age. In 67 infants, we examined if gut microbiome composition assessed at 1–3 weeks, 2, 6, and 12 months of age was associated with temperament at age 12 months. Stool samples were sequenced using the 16S Illumina MiSeq platform. Temperament was assessed using the Infant Behavior Questionnaire-Revised (IBQ-R). Beta …

Modeling The Effect Of Igg Subclasses And Specificity In The Translocation Of Monoclonal Antibodies Across The Placental Barrier, Sayuri Tais Miyamoto Magnabosco Jun 2021

Modeling The Effect Of Igg Subclasses And Specificity In The Translocation Of Monoclonal Antibodies Across The Placental Barrier, Sayuri Tais Miyamoto Magnabosco

ENGS 88 Honors Thesis (AB Students)

Infections are responsible for over half a million neonatal deaths every year (Lawn et al., 2014). Thus, there is huge interest in leveraging maternal immunization against infectious diseases to grant fetal protection during its development through the vertical transferring of IgG antibodies, the only Ig subclass that can significantly cross the placental barrier. Studies about vertical immunization rely on in-vitro models to extrapolate physiological conditions of the human placenta. The BeWo Transwell model (Bode et al., 2006) presents itself as a reliable model to mimic the transplacental transport mechanism of antibodies (Ellinger et al., 1999; Poulsen et al., 2009) …

Antigenic Variation In Mycoplasma Genitalium Reduces Antibody-Antigen Association Kinetics, Suzanne M. Stafford Jun 2021

Antigenic Variation In Mycoplasma Genitalium Reduces Antibody-Antigen Association Kinetics, Suzanne M. Stafford

Honors Projects

Infections caused by Mycoplasma genitalium, a human genital tract pathogen, often persist for months to years. Antigenic variation of the immunodominant adhesin proteins, MgpB and MgpC, is thought to enhance persistence by avoiding specific antibody-dependent immune clearance. We used surface plasmon resonance (SPR) to study the binding of antibodies from immunized rabbits and experimentally infected primates to recombinant MgpB protein fragments. Primate antibodies collected from 2 weeks before to 2, 4, and 8 weeks after infection associated specifically with two different domains of the MgpB adherence protein (variable region B and a conserved C-terminal region) bound via amine coupling …

Flash Radiotherapy: Skin Pigmentation As A Non-Invasive Indicator For Radiation-Induced Damage, Brady Mccallister Jun 2021

Flash Radiotherapy: Skin Pigmentation As A Non-Invasive Indicator For Radiation-Induced Damage, Brady Mccallister

ENGS 88 Honors Thesis (AB Students)

FLASH ultra-high dose rate radiotherapy (RT) is one of the most rapidly growing subfields of radiation oncology today due to its potential to increase the limits of the therapeutic ratio. The FLASH effect, which includes heightened normal tissue sparing paired with iso-effective tumor cell killing, has been literature documented, in a limited manner, in rodent models, a few large animals, and one clinical patients.

A porcine-based experiment was conducted to test the effects of FLASH RT on normal tissue compared to conventional (CONV) RT. A clinical linear accelerator (LINAC) was reversibly converted to be capable of FLASH RT. A female …

Students’ Conceptions Of Learning Biology And Achievement After Stem Activity Enriched Instruction, Ayşegül Kağnıcı, Özlem Sadi

i.e.: inquiry in education

Although many studies are analyzing the effect of the STEM model on students' cognitive characteristics, it is known that there are not many studies conducted especially on its impact on students' conceptions of learning (COL), and it is thought that there is a need for these studies as well. It is necessary to determine how COL, which may vary depending on cultural features and learning environments, will take shape with STEM, a learning model of great importance. Therefore, in the current study, the effects on Turkish high school students’ academic performances and conceptions of learning biology (COLB) in STEM activity …

Sensory Refreshment: Tcm Reconsidered, Ni Tang

Masters Theses

With the rapid development and expansion of our cities and the economic demand placed on residents, city dwellers are under more personal stress than ever. Long commutes, overtime work, irregular rest, unhealthy diets, urban pollution and noise all adversely impact wellbeing. These unhealthy conditions overwhelm the mind and make residents mentally and physically sub-healthy. Sub-health is a state between complete health and sickness, which is especially common in large cities. The sub-health rate in Shanghai and Beijing has reached more than 70%.

Chinese medicine can regulate the human body from a holistic perspective and help solve sub-health problems. Chinese medicine …

Transit Mobility And Premature Birth In New York City: A Population-Based Study, Ross B. Maddux Jun 2021

Transit Mobility And Premature Birth In New York City: A Population-Based Study, Ross B. Maddux

Theses and Dissertations

Transit mobility has been recognized as an essential element to economic attainment, environmental sustainability, and as a vital part of public health. Social and economic disparities paired with elusive and inefficient public transit present real barriers for the ability of efficient planning and use of time. Lengthier commutes and generally less efficient travel contribute to stress during a pregnancy and limit the ability to access work and prenatal care. In survey studies of women utilizing clinics as their prenatal care provider, nearly 25% listed transportation as a barrier to accessing care.

Prior research has not linked directly premature birth and …

Teacher Wellbeing In A Juvenile Detention Facility, Elizabeth G. Baker Jun 2021

Teacher Wellbeing In A Juvenile Detention Facility, Elizabeth G. Baker

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

“Teaching is inextricably linked to teachers’ personal lives; teachers invest their selves and their sense of identity and self-esteem in their work” (Rinchen, Ritchie, & Bellocchi, 2016, p. 604).

The teaching profession in the United States of America can be a highly stressful one, especially in America’s largest urban centers, due to the high incidences of violence, lack of resources and insufficient funding (Tobin, Roth & Zimmermann, 2001). The situation is even worse for teachers teaching in juvenile detention centers with traumatized youth and many teachers may internalize this trauma. Teachers may experience tremendous emotional tensions, such as …

Vulnerability: Sensation And Subjectivity In The Late Victorian Novel, Michael Shelichach Jun 2021

Vulnerability: Sensation And Subjectivity In The Late Victorian Novel, Michael Shelichach

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

“Vulnerability: Sensation and Subjectivity in the Late Victorian Novel” explores how developments in the science of psychology in the second half of the nineteenth century destabilized the genre of literary realism in Britain. Prominent mid-Victorian psychologists theorized a subject with a highly impressionable brain and nervous system. This new understanding of the mind’s potential vulnerability to external influence impelled contemporary novelists to contemplate the extent to which subjective interiority could be altered by the environment. Through close readings of canonical realist novels like Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations, George Eliot’s The Mill on the Floss and Wilkie Collins’s The Moonstone …

Troubleshooting A Nonresponder: Guidance For The Strength And Conditioning Coach, Benjamin H. Gleason, William G. Hornsby, Dylan G. Suarez, Matthew A. Nein, Michael H. Stone

ETSU Faculty Works

Ideally an athlete would continue to improve performance indefinitely over time, however improvement slows as the athlete approaches their genetic limits. Measuring performance is complex—performance may be temporarily depressed following aggressive training for multiple reasons, physiological and psychosocial. This reality may be vexing to the strength and conditioning coach, who, as a service provider, must answer to sport coaches about an athlete’s progress. Re-cently an evaluation mechanism for strength and conditioning coaches was proposed, in part to help coaches establish their effectiveness within the organization. Without formal guidance and realistic expectations, if an athlete is not bigger, leaner, stronger, etc. …

The “Age Of Rock” Versus The “Rock Of Ages”: Naturalism, Social Darwinism, And Fundamentalism In The Scopes Monkey Trial, Bessie Blackburn

Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024

Greek mythology once predominated the highest forms of culture known to man. Myths of how fire came to be in the hands of humans, or how the peacock got its spotted feathers were beloved cultural tales of origins.[1] With the decline of the ancient cultures, new ones blossomed in their place. However, the question of origin has remained a pertinent, central question of each culture, no matter how modern. The question of origin dictates who a person believes himself to be, where he believes himself to be going, and what he believes himself to be doing. The question of …
