Background: Stimuli-responsive hydrogels (SRHs) are smart polymeric materials that undergo reversible physicochemical changes in response to abiotic cues and externally applied fields, enabling applications in drug delivery, wound healing, and tissue engineering. However, they exhibit limited biological specificity and do not adequately reflect the dynamic, disease-relevant complexity of native tissue microenvironments. Microbe-colonized tissues display distinctive biochemical features driven, shaped by microbial metabolism, including localized pH gradients, short-chain fatty acid production, secretion of quorum-sensing molecules, biofilm formation, and expression of specialized enzymes. These endogenous, spatiotemporally regulated signals are closely linked to host physiology and pathology but remain underutilized in hydrogel …

Background: Thermal strain results from extreme temperature exposures and is common among athletes that create conflicting physiological responses. However, little is known on how rapidly shifting the body from a heat-dissipating to a heat-conserving state impacts human physiologically and psychologically. Purpose: To assess the physiological and psychological effects of thermal strain on collegiate football players. Methods: 18 Division I collegiate football players (19.72y ± 1.36) participated in the study during one full contact practice in the spring semester. Participants reported to the athletic training room 15-minutes before practice to have a Zephyr sensor placed in the midaxillary line. Participants also …

Associations Between Renal Function And Carotid Arterial Structure In Adults With Moderate Stage Chronic Kidney Disease, Koran D. Mason, Mandy E. Parra, Micheal Luera, Andru Botello, Olivia Russell, Leroy Bolden, Craig Hermans, Jeffrey Forsse, Tomas J. Chapman-Lopez
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) will likely progress to renal failure and death without medical or lifestyle intervention. Early detection and treatment of CKD before the development of severe stages (G3b–G5) may provide an opportunity to slow disease progression; however, reliable early detection strategies remain limited. CKD is a systemic condition, and vascular measures have been proposed as potential indicators of renal health. Therefore, this study examined associations between renal function and carotid artery structural characteristics in adults with moderate stages of CKD. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between renal filtration markers and carotid …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Pulmonary function testing is widely used to assess respiratory health and detect early functional decline. While relationships between lung function and systemic biomarkers have been described in clinical populations, limited data exist examining these associations in metabolically healthy adults without diagnosed chronic disease. PURPOSE: To examine the relationships between blood-based metabolic, lipid, renal, and hematologic biomarkers and pulmonary function in middle-aged, metabolically healthy adults. METHODS: Participants were recruited through a university-based health outreach program conducted between 2020 and 2024. Inclusion criteria included participants aged between 40 – 65 years, non-smoking status, and absence of diagnosed pulmonary, cardiovascular, renal, …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Aging in women is accompanied by changes in body composition, including shifts in regional fat distribution and lean mass, which may influence pulmonary function. However, the relative contributions of adiposity and lean mass to pulmonary outcomes in healthy non-smoking women remain unclear. PURPOSE: To examine age-related differences in trunk adiposity and to determine the relationships between body composition and pulmonary function in healthy non-smoking adult women. METHODS: One-hundred fourteen non-smoking women were included and stratified into younger (18–39 years, n = 53) and middle-aged (40–64 years, n = 61) groups. Body composition was assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, …

The concept of nuclear receptor (NR) coregulation was proposed nearly two decades before it was experimentally validated. According to this model, NRs - executors of a vast array of transcriptional programs - do not act independently but are governed by a network of regulatory proteins that either activate or repress their biological function. NRs identify the genes to be regulated. However, coregulators ultimately serve as the true controllers of transcriptional outcomes. They recruit cofactors and coordinate the activity of transcriptional complexes, thereby shaping NR-mediated gene expression beyond NRs' intrinsic functionality. The Steroid Receptor Coactivator (SRC) family is the most extensively …

Physiological And Neuroimmune Effects Of Manual Therapy, Murdi S. Alanazi
Physiological And Neuroimmune Effects Of Manual Therapy, Murdi S. Alanazi
ETDs from 2020-2029
Manual therapy (MT) is widely used across healthcare disciplines for the management of musculoskeletal conditions. Emerging evidence indicates that MT may also influence broader physiological systems such as the nervous and the immune systems. However, the mechanisms underlying these effects are still not well understood, and limited evidence exists regarding the neuroimmune effect of MT in neurologically impaired populations such as multiple sclerosis (MS). The overall aim of this dissertation was to investigate the physiological effects of MT, synthesizing current evidence across mechanistic domains, and generating pilot data to inform future research. This dissertation was structured around four manuscripts. The …

Ai-Assisted Qualitative Analysis Of Formative Feedback To Support Student-Centered Learning In Physiology, Sulekha Anand, Ursula Holzmann, Alexander Y. Payumo
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This study evaluates the effectiveness of large language models (LLMs), specifically Claude Sonnet 4.0 and ChatGPT 4.1, for analyzing formative feedback to support student-centered learning (SCL). In large courses, instructors often struggle to promptly review and synthesize student input. We used a low-stakes task: analyzing 63 anonymous student responses to a Muddiest Point prompt in a human physiology class after a lecture on respiratory physiology. Across 20 runs, both LLMs consistently identified "Ventilation and Lung Mechanics" as the most frequent area of confusion, aligning with human analysis. LLMs completed the task significantly faster than a human reviewer (average: 19.6 s/31.0 …
