Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This study examined graduate students' experiences with social support in relation to stress and uncertainty during the COVID-19 global pandemic. Graduate students as a population have significant levels of stress and uncertainty which may have negative effects on their lives and academic experiences. Graduate students often utilize social support as a way to cope with or mitigate the effects of stress and uncertainty. This qualitative study consisted of six focus groups, ranging from three to six participants, total of 22 participants, who were found using a purposeful snowball sampling method. The participants were masters and doctoral level students in communication …

When Fairness Fails: Using Territorial Behaviors To Cope With Uncertainty, Christopher Stein Jan 2021

When Fairness Fails: Using Territorial Behaviors To Cope With Uncertainty, Christopher Stein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Research on territorial behaviors in organizations is an emerging field (Brown, Crossley, & Robinson, 2014). Current theoretical approaches to territoriality rely heavily on a psychological ownership perspective; however, there is a wealth of theory organizational scholars can integrate from other disciplines (Altman, 1975; Ardrey, 1965; Brown, Lawrence, & Robinson, 2005). The purpose of this dissertation is to integrate an evolutionary perspective into organizational scholarship to explore new antecedents of territoriality. This research draws upon uncertainty management theory to hypothesize a moderated-mediated model predicting territorial behaviors. A measurement instrument is developed to test territoriality and findings from a three-wave field study …

Identifying Biomarkers Of Alzheimer's Disease From The Dakhleh Oasis Kellis 2 Cemetery Using Icp-Ms, Emily Barron Jan 2021

Identifying Biomarkers Of Alzheimer's Disease From The Dakhleh Oasis Kellis 2 Cemetery Using Icp-Ms, Emily Barron

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Alzheimer's disease is a prevalent disease that affects roughly 5.4 million individuals each year (Fisher et al., 2018). Understanding the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease within the bioarchaeological record can help anthropologists gain an understanding of a population's health while also understanding the potential social ramifications. Trace element analysis is a valuable tool that allows bioarchaeologists to gain insight into individuals' health and development within the context of the past. In bioarchaeological studies, hair analysis has been used to map the nutritional status and migration patterns of individuals of past peoples, with recent studies focusing on disease prevalence. Analysis of hair …

Demystifying Remote Research In Anthropology And Area Studies, Kaitlyn Ugoretz Jan 2021

Demystifying Remote Research In Anthropology And Area Studies, Kaitlyn Ugoretz

Asia Pacific Perspectives

Physically cut off from locations and archives central to our work due to restrictions in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, area studies scholars must reimagine what constitutes rigorous and responsible research in their respective disciplines. The practice of remote research, however, is not a new one. Digital ethnography, an admittedly niche subdiscipline of anthropology, has long been grappling with the issues of how to value and conduct remote research. This essay explores a number of misconceptions regarding digital and remote research that may aid in contextualizing and coming to terms with the anxieties the broader scholarly community faces. I …

Competitive Governance And Displacement Decisions Under Rebel Rule: Evidence From The Islamic State In Iraq, Mara Redlich Revkin Jan 2021

Competitive Governance And Displacement Decisions Under Rebel Rule: Evidence From The Islamic State In Iraq, Mara Redlich Revkin

Faculty Scholarship

When rebel groups with state-building ambitions capture territory, who stays and why? Through semi-structured interviews and an original household survey in the Iraqi city of Mosul, which was controlled by the Islamic State for more than three years, I conduct a multi-method descriptive comparison of the characteristics of “stayers” against “leavers.” I test and find some quantitative and qualitative support for a theory of competitive governance: Civilians who perceived improvements in the quality of governance under IS rule—relative to the Iraqi state—were more likely to stay under IS rule than those who perceived no change or a deterioration, but displacement …

Cryptocurrency And The State: An Unholy Alliance, Lee Reiners Jan 2021

Cryptocurrency And The State: An Unholy Alliance, Lee Reiners

Faculty Scholarship

This article contextualizes the rise of cryptocurrency within the historical relationship between money and the state. It begins by asking two simple yet critical questions: What is money and where did it come from? Armed with the answers, the article proceeds by taking a fresh look at cryptocurrency through the lens of the credit theory of money. It finds that cryptocurrency, by using new technologies and incentive-based design, attempts to overcome the previous geographic limitations that hindered broad adoption of private currencies. Even with these innovations, cryptocurrency appeared unlikely to challenge the supremacy of sovereign money until Facebook announced the …

A pilot investigation that compared ozone oxidation with an integrated ozone and granular activated carbon (GAC) process for the control of regulated disinfection by-products at the University of Central Florida's water plant located at the Orlando campus has been completed. Treatment effectiveness was measured by monitoring the parameters pH, temperature, non-purgeable dissolved organic carbon (DOC), ultraviolet absorbance at a wavelength of 254 nm (UV254), specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA), excitation emission matrices (EEMs) and the associated formation of the DBP chemical groups total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). Groundwater that contained an average of 2.5 milligrams per liter (mg/L) DOC …

Long-Term Changes In Juvenile Green Turtle Abundance And Foraging Ecology In The Indian River Lagoon, Florida, Christopher Long Jan 2021

Long-Term Changes In Juvenile Green Turtle Abundance And Foraging Ecology In The Indian River Lagoon, Florida, Christopher Long

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Marine turtles are distributed in temperate, sub-tropical and tropical waters and beaches worldwide, often in areas heavily impacted by humans. Although there are many threats to marine turtle populations, the growing threats of nutrient pollution and harmful algal blooms are relatively understudied despite their widespread impacts on coastal marine ecosystems that marine turtles depend on. By studying juvenile green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in the Indian River Lagoon, Florida, where nutrient pollution and HABs are a widespread and longstanding issue, I aimed to conduct a case study of how these threats may affect this federally Threatened species. In Chapter 2, I …

Spermidine Rescued Ptpn2/22 Function In Crispr-Cas9-Edited T-Cells With Ptpn2/22 Snps Linked To Crohn's Disease And Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ameera Shaw

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Inflammatory autoimmune diseases like Crohn's Disease (CD) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) share some of the same single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in protein tyrosine phosphatase non-receptor types 2 and 22 (PTPN2/22), which contribute to their pathogenesis. In clinical CD and RA samples, PTPN2:rs478582 and PTPN22:rs2476601 were found to exacerbate a number of inflammatory processes associated with CD and RA. To confirm the role of these SNPs in CD and RA pathogenesis, CRISPR-Cas9 was used to induce the SNPs in T-cells. Cells were also treated with the naturally occurring polyamine, spermidine, to restore PTPN2/22 function and reverse the inflammatory effects of the …

Human Milk Microbiota And Oligosaccharides: A Glimpse Into Benefits, Diversity And Correlations, Carole Ayoub Moubareck

All Works

Human milk represents a cornerstone for growth and development of infants, with extensive array of benefits. In addition to exceptionally nutritive and bioactive components, human milk encompasses a complex community of signature bacteria that helps establish infant gut microbiota, contributes to maturation of infant immune system, and competitively interferes with pathogens. Among bioactive constituents of milk, human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are particularly significant. These are non-digestible carbohydrates forming the third largest solid component in human milk. Valuable effects of HMOs include shaping intestinal microbiota, imparting antimicrobial effects, developing intestinal barrier, and modulating immune response. Moreover, recent investigations suggest correlations between …

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the fourth technological revolution in the global information industry after computers, the Internet, and mobile communication networks. It combines radio-frequency identification devices, infrared sensors, global positioning systems, and various other technologies. Information sensing equipment is connected via the Internet, thus forming a vast network. When these physical devices are connected to the Internet, the user terminal can be extended and expanded to exchange information, communicate with anything, and carry out identification, positioning, tracking, monitoring, and triggering of corresponding events on each device in the network. In real life, the IoT has a wide range …

Facing Up To Climate Change: Community Composition Varies With Aspect And Surface Temperature In The Rocky Intertidal, A. Amstutz, L. B. Firth, J. I. Spicer, M. E. Hanley Jan 2021

Facing Up To Climate Change: Community Composition Varies With Aspect And Surface Temperature In The Rocky Intertidal, A. Amstutz, L. B. Firth, J. I. Spicer, M. E. Hanley

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Marine rocky intertidal organisms are amongst those most affected by climate change with regional distributional changes observed for many species. Although often ascribed to increased sea surface temperatures, precise assessment of the local habitat conditions underpinning observed and predicted changes in community assembly is lacking. Here we examine how aspect (i.e. north-south orientation) affects intertidal community composition and how rock surface temperatures and stress responses of two dominant grazer species (Patella spp.) elucidate emergent differences. We quantified year-round temperature variation and surveyed intertidal community composition on paired natural rock gullies with Equator- (EF) and Pole-facing (PF) surfaces. We also investigated …

Galleria Mellonella Larvae Exhibit A Weight-Dependent Lethal Median Dose When Infected With Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, Poppy J. Hesketh-Best, Michelle V. Mouritzen, Kayleigh Shandley-Edwards, Richard A. Billington, Mathew Upton

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

ABSTRACT Galleria mellonella is a recognised model to study antimicrobial efficacy; however, standardisation across the scientific field and investigations of methodological components are needed. Here, we investigate the impact of weight on mortality following infection with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Larvae were separated into six weight groups (180–300 mg at 20 mg intervals) and infected with a range of doses of MRSA to determine the 50% lethal dose (LD50), and the ‘lipid weight’ of larvae post-infection was quantified. A model of LD50 values correlated with weight was developed. The LD50 values, as estimated by our model, were further tested in …

Something Happened In The Room: Conceptualizing Intersubjectivation, M Dunlop, Negro G Del, Munck K De, K Gale, Sm Mackay, M Price, A Sakellariadis, G Soler, J Speedy, Hove G Van

Plymouth Institute of Education

A panel convened around the idea of intersubjectivation, loosely conceived as a process of actively, consciously, and reciprocally adjusting the structures and power dynamics of our social relations, thereby mutually (and consensually) reconfiguring our subjectivities and, over time, our wider cultures. Through a series of explorations of how one may elicit, reach, or realize a shared sense of intersubjectivity, the panel reflected on and challenged conceptions of the human subject as unitary, discretely embodied, economically accountable, and objectively measurable by a proscribed set of validating criteria. Speakers invited, allowed, or insisted upon the (re)presentation of hidden, unrecognized, or misconstrued aspects …

Explicit Tight Frames For Simulating A New System Of Fractional Nonlinear Partial Differential Equation Model Of Alzheimer Disease, Mutaz Mohammad, Alexander Trounev Jan 2021

Explicit Tight Frames For Simulating A New System Of Fractional Nonlinear Partial Differential Equation Model Of Alzheimer Disease, Mutaz Mohammad, Alexander Trounev

All Works

This paper is devoted to develop a new mathematical model for Alzheimer disease based on a system of fractional-order partial differential equations. The system of Alzheimer disease includes neurons, astrocytes, microglias and peripheral macrophages, as well as amyloid β aggregation and hyperphosphorylated tau proteins. We consider the Caputo fractional derivative definition to analyze the formulated system by simulating the effect of drugs that either failed or currently in clinical trials. To simulate the model, we use tight frame (framelet) systems generated using the unitaryand oblique extension principle. According to the simulation results, and based on using such new direction of …

A Meta-Analysis: Shape Of Age Effects And Second Language Grammar Acquisition, Muhammad Asif Qureshi Jan 2021

A Meta-Analysis: Shape Of Age Effects And Second Language Grammar Acquisition, Muhammad Asif Qureshi

All Works

This study reports findings of a meta-analysis on the effects of the age of first exposure, known as the age of onset (AO), on the acquisition of morphosyntax in a second language (L2). Several studies report restrictive effects of AO on L2 grammar acquisition (Abrahamsson, 2012; DeKeyser et al., 2010; Qureshi, 2016); however, there is a disagreement about the way sensitivity to second language acquisition declines (Birdsong, 2009; Long, 2013). Researchers disagree about the nature of the decline and argue whether the decrease that occurs in learners' ultimate proficiency in the second language is gradual and continuous or gradual but …

Real-Time Privacy Preserving Framework For Covid-19 Contact Tracing, Akashdeep Bhardwaj, Ahmed A. Mohamed, Manoj Kumar, Mohammed Alshehri, Ahed Abugabah

All Works

The recent unprecedented threat from COVID-19 and past epidemics, such as SARS, AIDS, and Ebola, has affected millions of people in multiple countries. Countries have shut their borders, and their nationals have been advised to self-quarantine. The variety of responses to the pandemic has given rise to data privacy concerns. Infection prevention and control strategies as well as disease control measures, especially real-time contact tracing for COVID-19, require the identification of people exposed to COVID-19. Such tracing frameworks use mobile apps and geolocations to trace individuals. However, while the motive may be well intended, the limitations and security issues associated …

The biggest fear when deploying machine learning models to the real world is their ability to handle the new data. This problem is significant especially in medicine, where models trained on rich high-quality data extracted from large hospitals do not scale to small regional hospitals. One of the clinical challenges addressed in this work is magnetic resonance image generalization for improved visualization and diagnosis of hip abnormalities such as femoroacetabular impingement and dysplasia. Domain Generalization (DG) is a field in machine learning that tries to solve the model’s dependency on the training data by leveraging many related but different data …

Tropical Plant-Animal Interactions: Linking Defaunation With Seed Predation, And Resource-Dependent Co-Occurrence, Peter Jeffrey Williams Jan 2021

Tropical Plant-Animal Interactions: Linking Defaunation With Seed Predation, And Resource-Dependent Co-Occurrence, Peter Jeffrey Williams

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Plant-consumer interactions can be critical for regulating populations of both plants and animals. In the tropics, many trees rely on animals to disperse their seeds, but many of these dispersers are disappearing, with potentially disastrous consequences for tropical tree species and global carbon storage. Defaunation—the loss of large animals due to factors such as overhunting—can also affect seed fates, either by increasing or decreasing seed predation. We know that defaunation alters these plant-animal interactions, but we still do not know how these changes at early life stages will ultimately affect tropical tree populations. Furthermore, we do not understand how defaunation …

All In Due Time: Multi-Trait Assessment Of Elk Acclimation To Translocation, Ellen Marie Pero Jan 2021

All In Due Time: Multi-Trait Assessment Of Elk Acclimation To Translocation, Ellen Marie Pero

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Wildlife translocation – the intentional movement of animals – is a crucial conservation tool for restoring species and halting global biodiversity decline. However, this practice is challenging for wildlife, and animals must adjust to their release landscapes for restoration to be successful. The period following release is a vulnerable time for translocated wildlife and determining when and how animals eventually acclimate following releases allows researchers to efficiently tailor post-release management to each species’ needs, thus maximizing the success of translocations while minimizing costs of an already expensive conservation practice. In this dissertation, I investigate changes in the physiological, behavioral, and …

The Homology Of Sarcopterygian Gills, Kyle Orr Jan 2021

The Homology Of Sarcopterygian Gills, Kyle Orr

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Vertebrate gills may be either external (protruding from the body surface) or internal (enclosed in a chamber). Among living amphibians, external gills are found in salamander larvae and neotenes, early frog larvae, and caecilian embryos; internal gills are found only in later-stage frog larvae. Evidence for internal gills has also been found in stem tetrapods, and amphibian-like external gills have been found in some fossil temnospondyls and anthracosaurs. Gill homology among these groups and life stages has long been questioned. To address this, scanning electron microscopy, vascular casting, and paraffin sectioning were utilized to study the morphology of gills and …
