Alone On The Range? Rangeland Stakeholder Perceptions Of Public Lands, Community Change And Maintaining Rural Livelihoods, Hailee Rose Nolte

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Ranchers are a part of a rapidly changing rural western American landscape, and they play a special role in protecting and stewarding working landscapes. Rural communities in Eastern Oregon and Northeastern California have deeply rooted identities and economies connected to ranching and a high percentage of federal lands. The aim of this research is to: 1) document how ties to ranching are changing in communities undergoing social and economic change; 2) analyze the relationships and interactions between ranchers and federal management agency representatives; and 3) to identify how ranchers are maintaining their lifestyle under these circumstances. I interviewed representatives of …

Bird Abundance And Diversity In Shade Coffee And Natural Forest Kenya, Frank J. Ong'ondo Jan 2021

Bird Abundance And Diversity In Shade Coffee And Natural Forest Kenya, Frank J. Ong'ondo

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Coffee, one of the major traded commodities in the world, has captured attention of both the international business class and conservation community due to its value as a beverage and for the habitat it can provide for wildlife. Previous work in Central Kenya has demonstrated that when cultivated with shade trees, coffee farms can host high levels of bird diversity. However, questions of how the bird community in shade coffee farms compares to those in natural forest remained unanswered. Using three visits to each of 160-point count locations in natural forest (80) and shade coffee sites (80) in Central Kenya, …

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The Osiris Shaft is one of many archaeological signatures associated with Egypt’s Giza Plateau, the most well-known of which are the Great Pyramids. However, the role(s) the Osiris Shaft feature played in the religious and daily practices of ancient Egyptians remain(s) unknown. This research seeks to contextualize the Osiris Shaft in Egyptian history to learn more about this feature’s story. In order to achieve this goal, this thesis examines funerary deities associated with Memphis theology and explores archaeological investigations related to the Osiris Shaft, including the work of Dr. Zahi Hawass and investigations by the Giza Mapping Project. Ecotoxicological And Physiological Effects Of Salinity On Amphibians, Brian James Tornabene Jan 2021

Ecotoxicological And Physiological Effects Of Salinity On Amphibians, Brian James Tornabene

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Salinity is a persistent anthropogenic contaminant that negatively effects freshwater species, communities, and ecosystems. High-salinity wastewaters from energy extraction (wastewaters) and road salts are major contributors to increased salinity (NaCl; sodium chloride), but most studies focus on effects of NaCl roads salts. Amphibians are particularly vulnerable to contaminants such as increased salinity because of their porous skin, dependence on freshwater, and poor osmoregulatory capacity. We investigated the relative effects of wastewaters and NaCl on three species of larval amphibians with acute toxicity experiments (Chapter 1). Effects of wastewaters on larvae were predominantly due to high concentrations of NaCl and both …

Uncovering Cooperation In Housepit 54, Bridge River, British Columbia, Canada, Megan Denis

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

There is a significant amount of literature regarding the theory of cooperation, as well as ethnographies and data from modern populations that clearly show cooperation, yet it is difficult to tease that information out of the archaeological record. My thesis will focus on floors IIi to IIc of Bridge River’s Housepit 54 in British Columbia, Canada, which extends from the Bridge River 2 period to the Bridge River 3 period and includes two incidents of resource stress and one of resource plenty. These times of fluctuating resource availability should result in the population utilizing different approaches to social organization. By …

Non-Indian Reservations, Joshua Matthew Rosenau Jan 2021

Non-Indian Reservations, Joshua Matthew Rosenau

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis is a skeptical treatment of the logical distinctions presumed to exist between “Indian” and “non-Indian” people. Despite representing 99 percent of the U.S. population, “non-Indians” represent a legal identity which has no explicit definition. The basis for the U.S. Supreme Court’s decisions regarding non-Indians and Indians rests not on any objective, empirical or logical criterion or proof, but rather on the “assumption of a ‘guardian-ward’ status. This thesis investigates this assumption, and recommends that we suspend judgment on whether the difference between “Indians” and “non-Indians” can be determined either by logical argument or by legal assumption.

Developmental Neurorobotics Models Of Counting And Numerosity Judgment, Leszek Pecyna Jan 2021

Developmental Neurorobotics Models Of Counting And Numerosity Judgment, Leszek Pecyna

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This thesis presents novel developmental robotics models of number cognition which take into account the embodied basis of this process. The ability to perceive quantity is undoubtedly crucial for both humans and animals. Nowadays, automation is becoming increasingly important in society; it seems that the way, similar to humans, to perceive and process numbers is one of the pressing issues for the future of robotics. This is important in the context of proper interaction between robots and humans which requires machines - at least on some level - to understand complex/abstract words such as number names. This thesis takes into …

Founding Monsters, Maggie Colangelo, Bernard Means Jan 2021

Founding Monsters, Maggie Colangelo, Bernard Means

Founding Monsters

The Founding Monsters comic book was created as a science-friendly graphical storytelling framework that tells the story of the Founding Fathers and their obsession with prehistoric megafauna, especially mastodons and giant ground sloths. Founding Monsters combines sequential art (e.g. comic book style) with historical and scientific data. The first mastodon (Mammut americanum) fossils were found in New York in the early 18th century. Later in the 18th century, Thomas Jefferson was sent fossils from what is now West Virginia for what were eventually identified as bones from a giant ground sloth (Megalonyx jeffersoni). The founding fathers, …

Linking Habitat, Populations And Policy For Caribou In The Face Of Increasing Disturbance, Eric Charles Palm Jan 2021

Linking Habitat, Populations And Policy For Caribou In The Face Of Increasing Disturbance, Eric Charles Palm

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In North America’s boreal forest, wildfire has long been the dominant form of natural disturbance. However, the human footprint in the region is steadily growing. Large-scale forest harvest and energy development have fragmented late-successional forests, leading to habitat loss for species such as caribou (Rangifer tarandus) that rely on these ecological communities. Caribou have experienced widespread population declines and local extirpation throughout the western boreal forest in recent decades. I first analyzed caribou resource selection responses to fires in >685 female caribou across 15 populations that span a wide gradient of fire frequency but are exposed to relatively little human …

Mechanisms Of Engineered Nano-Material Induced Membrane Disruption And Lysosomal Membrane Permeability, Matthew Josiah Sydor Jan 2021

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Engineered nano-materials (ENM), which have at least one dimension less than 100 nm are an emerging group of materials that are widely used in everyday products and workplaces. Because of the wide variety of ENM and their use in today’s society, there is a concern for the impacts of ENM on human health following exposure. While humans could be exposed to ENM through various routes, there is significant concern for inhalation of ENM due to their size and ease of aerosolization. Studies have reported that ENM can deposit into the lungs, particularly in the alveoli, where resident macrophages can encounter …

A Fresh Start In Ambersnail (Gastropoda: Succineidae) Taxonomy: Finding A Foothold Using A Widespread Species Of Oxyloma, Kathryn E. Perez, Marco A. Martinez Cruz, Brent W. Steury, Gary M. Barker

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

The ambersnails (Succineidae), found nearly worldwide, are considered a very challenging group to classify and identify with even genus-level identifications requiring dissection. In this study, we use mitochondrial and nuclear DNA markers, shell morphometrics, and anatomical dissection to examine fresh material collected from the type localities of two nominal species in Oxyloma (Neoxyloma). We conclude from these evidence that Oxyloma salleanum (L. Pfeiffer, 1850) and Oxyloma effusum (L. Pfeiffer, 1853) are conspecific, and accordingly reduce O. effusum to the status of junior synonymy. We present a redescription of O. salleanum.

Effect Of Cbd On D2 Dopamine Receptor And Cb1 Cannabinoid Receptor Function And Localization, Elizabeth Dull Jan 2021

Effect Of Cbd On D2 Dopamine Receptor And Cb1 Cannabinoid Receptor Function And Localization, Elizabeth Dull

Online Theses and Dissertations

Cannabidiol (CBD) is the second most abundant cannabinoid found in Cannabis sativa and its array of therapeutic effects make it a popular target of pharmacological research. Though its properties are psychoactive in nature, abuse and dependence of CBD has never been reported. Its beneficial side effects are mediated through the endocannabinoid system (ECS), as it functions as an antagonist at cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1). However, recent evidence suggests that CBD may also be a CB1 negative allosteric modulator of (−)-trans-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC). Interestingly, the ECS is linked to the main circuit thought to modulate reward signaling when taking substances of abuse, …

Evidence Of Non-Strike Induced Chemosensory Searching By Eastern Copperheads (Agkistrodon Contortrix) During Cicada Predation, Henderson Cyrenius Gull Jan 2021

Evidence Of Non-Strike Induced Chemosensory Searching By Eastern Copperheads (Agkistrodon Contortrix) During Cicada Predation, Henderson Cyrenius Gull

Online Theses and Dissertations

New evidence of active foraging by eastern copperheads, Agkistrodon contortrix, contradicts its description as an envenomation-reliant ambush predator. Evidence of active foraging through non-strike induced chemosensory searching (NSICS) was previously found in cottonmouths (A. piscivorus) but could not be replicated with A. contortrix in later experiments. I observed foraging methods similar to non-strike induced chemoreception when specifically predating upon cicada nymphs during seasonal emergences. I hypothesized that A. contortrix actively forage using chemoreception without envenomation, and that tongue flick rates would be higher during foraging behaviors than during non-predatory or resting behaviors. Behavior of twelve A. contortrix were filmed at …

Forgotten In Local Jails: A Carceral System Created To Fail Women., Hayley Jackey

Online Theses and Dissertations

The United States has seen an influx of incarcerated women since the 1980s with a 750% increase between 1980 and 2017. There is a substantial amount of literature about how women experience prison and the unique challenges they face as they reenter society such as motherhood, previous abuse, mental health, and housing. Conclusions drawn suggest that the current structure fails to prepare women for a society that denounces women who have been incarcerated. What is less known is how this research translates to the jail environment. For reasons to be discussed, it is likely that local jails are even less …

The Phylogenetic Analysis Of Genes Encoding Specific Steps In The Glutathione Pathway Within Industrial Beer Brewing Strains: Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Saccharomyces Pastorinus, And The Spoilage Microbe Brettanomyces, Miles Tyler Johnson

Online Theses and Dissertations

The Glutathione pathway, (GSH) is an antioxidant system in yeast that increases cell viability and contributes to the production of desirable beer flavors during industrial fermentation. Despite its importance, studies using the GSH pathway: GSH1, GSH2, GLR1, and SOD1 genes, to trace the evolutionary history of beer strains are lacking. As a result, the investigator sought to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships between four commonly used industrial beer strains: California Ale, London Ale, Oktoberfest, and Brettanomyces bruxellensis through single-gene sequencing analysis of the GSH pathway. It was hypothesized that the actions of these GSH genes are unique and potentially upregulated in …
