Direct pacing of the mid myocardium where re-entry originates can be used to prevent ventricular arrhythmias and circumvent the need for painful defibrillation or cardiac ablation. However, there are no pacing electrodes small enough to navigate the coronary veins that cross these culprit scar regions. To address this need, we have developed an injectable ionically conductive hydrogel electrode that can fill the epicardial coronary veins and transform them into flexible electrodes. A new hydrogel chemistry based on a polyether urethane diacrylamide macromer was developed that matches myocardial stiffness and is resistant to hydrolysis. Conductivity was imparted using ionic precursor solutions …

Purpose: AMH inhibits hormone production in luteinized granulosa cells (GCs) and stalls ovarian follicle development in vitro and in vivo. We sought to confirm AMH's mechanism of action through SMAD activation and investigate AMH inhibition of follicle development and function, in vitro and in vivo.
Methods: A primary culture of GCs isolated from follicular fluid was used, and cells were treated with recombinant AMH (rAMH) or placebo for 24 h. For the mouse model, 18-weeks old C57BL female mice were either euthanized at the beginning or treated with rAMH or normal saline for 3 weeks. Primordial (PDF), primary follicle (PRF), …

Periodontal diseases, a group of complex conditions marked by an excessive immune response and periodontal tissue destruction, are a global health concern. Since 1990, the incidence of these diseases has doubled, with Western sub-Saharan Africa experiencing the highest burden. Accurate diagnosis and case identification are crucial for understanding the etiology, features of disease, research, treatment and prevention. Modern perspectives on periodontal disease classification are based on commonality among those affected. However, current literature is often plagued by methodological inconsistencies and focused on disease mechanisms in European populations. Health inequalities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are exacerbated by these challenges, …

It has been 40 years since the first discovery of the important human pathogen, Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). Eradication of the infection continues to pose significant challenges in part because of the global increase in antibiotic resistance. Generally, the “addition” strategy has failed to deliver the desired results for more than a short period and often contributed to the increase in the prevalence of resistant strains. As such, optimization of each component of the treatment strategy has become an increasingly critical focus of research. In this study, we summarized the evolution of H. pylori eradication regimens and the …
Ecological Responsibility In The City: The Surfaces And Volumes Of Urban Mosquito Management, Orlando Woods, Sayd Randle
Ecological Responsibility In The City: The Surfaces And Volumes Of Urban Mosquito Management, Orlando Woods, Sayd Randle
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This paper explores how ecological responsibility becomes distributed across the surfaces and volumes of the city. Our focus is urban mosquito management – specifically, the management of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the vector by which dengue and several other diseases are transmitted to humans – and the governance strategies deployed in Singapore to manage breeding sites and mosquito outbreaks. Whilst the governance of nature in Singapore is usually undertaken by the state, the effective management of mosquitoes requires responsibility for ecological management to become distributed throughout the city. Residents are expected to assume responsibility for surficial cleanliness and the removal …

Infrastructural Splintering Along The Bri: Catholic Political Ecologies And The Fractious Futures Of Sri Lanka’S Littoral Spaces, Orlando Woods
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This article considers the ways in which the material infrastructures of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) intersect with other infrastructural formations, and how the resulting overlaps can trigger processes of what I call “infrastructural splintering”. These processes cause infrastructure to be experienced in differentiating ways, creating divisive politics where there might once have been unity. Embracing these politics as an analytical starting point undermines the techno-material stability of the BRI, and reveals its more-than-material affects. I illustrate these ideas by developing a case study of the effects of the China-backed Colombo Port City project on Catholic fishing communities that …

BACKGROUND: Climate change is anticipated to have profound effects on human health, including in infectious diseases. Wildfires have been increasing in frequency and intensity due to climate change and have been linked to worsening respiratory disease outcomes. We aimed to demonstrate whether there was an association between wildfire smoke and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in California during 2020.
METHODS: We used an ecologic cohort study with a spatial autoregressive model to test for associations between wildfire smoke, measured as particulate matter < 2.5 µg/m
RESULTS: In an adjusted analysis, we found a 1-month lag increase of 203 COVID-19 cases per 10 000 persons …

Exploring New Mexico 4-H Volunteers’ Acceptance And Use Of Technology: A Qualitative Approach, Kayla Dawn Hinrichs
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Integrating technology into youth development programs like 4-H is increasingly vital for enhancing communication, education, and engagement. However, technology adoption among 4-H volunteers remains inconsistent. This qualitative study explored the barriers to technology adoption among New Mexico 4-H volunteers. The researcher aimed to understand the factors influencing their willingness and ability to integrate digital tools into their volunteer roles. Guided by Rogers’s (2003) diffusion of innovation theory and framed by Creswell and Poth’s (2024) qualitative research design, this study employed semistructured interviews with a purposive sample of 4-H volunteers across the state. Following Braun and Clarke’s (2006) six- phase approach, …

‘Making A Positive Environmental Impact’: Exploring The Role Of Volunteering At A Campus Community Garden, Dina Izenstark, Barbara Ann Boone
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Promoting sustainability in higher education is a social and environmental imperative. This paper explores how and why volunteering at a campus community garden (CCG) can serve as a unique context for promoting sustainability. Twenty-five undergraduate students between the ages of 18 and 27, who had volunteered at a campus garden, participated in individual semi-structured interviews. A majority of participants identified as female (80%) and Asian American (52%). Using reflexive thematic analysis, we first found students were motivated to volunteer for personal and academic reasons as well as to learn more about gardening. Childhood gardening experiences influenced participants’ re-engagement as adults. …

Development Of An Hplc-Light Scattering Method For The Quantification Of Dicyclohexylamine In Beeswax, Joseph J. Pesek, Maria T. Matyska-Pesek, Tanya Hiltz, Jason Hall
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
An excipient present in commercial formulations of fumagillin (an antibiotic used in apiculture for the control of Nosema disease) toxic dicyclohexylamine is found in beeswax samples. There is a need for a reliable analytical method without the use of MS for analysis of this compound. A reversed-phase gradient method was developed for the analysis using a simple extraction procedure followed by low temperature elimination of interfering compounds. Since dicyclohexylamine is lacking a chromophore, an evaporative light scatter detector was used in this analysis. Several challenges of quantitative analysis using an evaporative light scatter detector were addressed. The reported method was …

A Multimodal Fusion Model Leveraging Mlp Mixer And Handcrafted Features-Based Deep Learning Networks For Facial Palsy Detection, Heng Yim Nicole Oo, Min Hun Lee, Jeong Hoon Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Algorithmic detection of facial palsy offers the potential to improve current practices, which usually involve labor-intensive and subjective assessments by clinicians. In this paper, we present a multimodal fusion-based deep learning model that utilizes an MLP mixer-based model to process unstructured data (i.e. RGB images or images with facial line segments) and a feed-forward neural network to process structured data (i.e. facial landmark coordinates, features of facial expressions, or handcrafted features) for detecting facial palsy. We then contribute to a study to analyze the effect of different data modalities and the benefits of a multimodal fusion-based approach using videos of …

I consider myself an outsider, an observer, an economic enthusiast, and a newspaper reader, participating in …
Breath, Void, Ground, Huichun Yang
Breath, Void, Ground, Huichun Yang
Masters Theses
Before the sound, there is breath. Before the explosion, there is a threshold. Before the noise, there is silence.
Inspired by the physicality of balloons, this thesis explores breath as sonic material that carries memory, moves through bodies, and resonates across spaces. The balloon becomes a skin that holds breath: a force inhaling trauma, ritual, and intimacy. When released through mouth and latex, breath conjures alien, untranslatable voices that hiss and hum.
It begins with a balloon and expands with endless breath. The balloon becomes a site where the history, body, and voice disintegrate and reform. The pressure and tension …
The Role Of Excitatory Neuromodulation In Managing Variability Of Neural System Output, Omar Itani
The Role Of Excitatory Neuromodulation In Managing Variability Of Neural System Output, Omar Itani
Dissertations
Neural systems can generate consistent outputs across a population despite substantial variability in the underlying components of individuals. This dissertation aims to identify mechanisms through which neuromodulation influences the relationship between parametric and output variability in neural systems. Through a combination of theoretical analysis, computational modeling, and data-driven approaches, the research addresses how excitatory neuromodulation can shape population-level activity variability and identifies key patterns that govern the production of consistent neural population output despite underlying parameter variability.
The theoretical foundation is established by considering how excitatory neuromodulation affects population variability in simplified neuronal models. Two fundamental patterns of variability reduction …

Modulation Of Cerebellar Cells By Transcranial Ac Stimulation In Anesthetized Rats, Qi Kang
Dissertations
Noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) is increasingly utilized in clinical trials for the treatment of neurological disorders. Each NIBS technique offers distinct advantages. Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) is easy to apply and requires only simple equipment, while transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can penetrate deeper than tES into the brain and it is more focal. Transcranial focused ultrasound stimulation (FUS) is superior to both in terms of penetration and focal stimulation. This study focuses on the modulation of the cerebellum, traditionally believed to be associated with motor coordination but increasingly recognized for its role in cognition and emotion as well. While tES …

Understanding the drivers of ecosystem collapse is critical for resource management, particularly for protected areas mandated to preserve biodiversity. In Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, tall willows (Salix spp.) dominated riparian vegetation, and a beaver-willow state was the natural ecosystem type in the Colorado River headwaters. However, willows comprise a portion of elk diets and are a preferred food for recently introduced moose, and the vegetation structure has changed dramatically since the early 2000s. To assess ecosystem changes, we analyzed time-series data on willow height from 1997 to 2021 inside and outside 3 exclosures built to exclude ungulates, area of …
The Stream Of Life, Yitao Yuan
The Stream Of Life, Yitao Yuan
Masters Theses
The repetitive engagement with technological objects erases the depth of emotion by creating habits that bypass embodied and erotic pleasures and lead to a de-sexualized form of technology fetishism. The stimuli produced by machines that humans engage with are not able to convey the strength of intimacy between humans. Such virtual stimuli as the words and images produced and mediated through modern machines continuously shape conscious perception. This thesis book is split into two sections: a theoretical text and a series of images and explanations about my installation practice and process. They both seek to investigate the intersection of human …
Echoes Of Longing, Mahalexmi Mohan
Echoes Of Longing, Mahalexmi Mohan
Masters Theses
Loss lingers like a shadow, a weight no time can lift. Longing becomes a silent scream, echoing within, unanswered. Internal pain festers in the quiet, where unhealed wounds weave themselves into the fabric of being. Each breath is both survival and surrender, a fragile balance between hope and the hollow ache of what was, what will never be, yet could be.
Abstract
My work is deeply influenced by my experiences within a dysfunctional family structure and is explored through the relationship of emotional vulnerability and its effect on self-worth. Layered into the work is a confrontation with the scars, conflict …
Body Choice Of Women-507, Yilin Sun
Body Choice Of Women-507, Yilin Sun
Masters Theses
This thesis examines the struggle for bodily autonomy through the lens of contemporary art, focusing on 507, a kinetic installation by Yilin (Rebecca) Sun. At the heart of this work lies a powerful meditation on the emotional and political dimensions of reproductive responsibility. In a world where women’s rights over their own bodies are frequently contested, 507 becomes both a vessel of remembrance and a visual act of resistance. It channels the often-silenced experiences of women into a shared space of reflection, mourning, and confrontation.
Rather than offering straightforward answers, 507 presents an enigmatic title and a symbolic language …

How To Walk On Water: Living Through The Absurd, Esther Du
Masters Theses
Set in a speculative world submerged by water, this thesis constructs a fragmented, nonlinear narrative that reflects on survival, memory, and displacement in the aftermath of catastrophe. Through three interwoven chapters—The Outcast, The Researcher, and The World—the project explores the emotional and psychological landscapes of individuals navigating a post-apocalyptic existence where the past is irretrievable and the future uncertain. Using an interdisciplinary form of visual storytelling, writing, and sound, the work draws from personal experience and collective trauma to examine how people reconstruct identity and meaning after loss. Rather than offering a definitive answer to existential …
