The Human Right To Workplace Safety In A Pandemic, Ruben J. Garcia
The Human Right To Workplace Safety In A Pandemic, Ruben J. Garcia
Scholarly Works
The COVID-19 pandemic has presented unique challenges for immigrant workers many of whom occupy jobs most at risk in the pandemic: heath care, janitorial services, and mass transit. This Article encourages the extension of human rights instruments protecting health and safety in the workplace to all workers, particularly immigrant workers. Garcia analyzes the options available for workers who confront unsafe working conditions under existing law. Expanding the language of “human right” will allow for greater scrutiny of actions taken by the government and employers. Garcia encourages statutory changes to OSHA and the NRLA, test cases, filing complaints under trade agreements, …
Vocal Fold Cover Replacement: Imaging Analysis Of Intermediate And Long-Term Outcomes, Kevin Osmond Juarez
Vocal Fold Cover Replacement: Imaging Analysis Of Intermediate And Long-Term Outcomes, Kevin Osmond Juarez
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The voice is an important source of communication. Voice disorders, dysphonia, has an estimated 30 percent lifetime prevalence in the United States with a significant economic and social cost. Severe vocal fold scarring can lead to persistent dysphonia, has no optimal treatment and negatively impacts those affected by impairing their quality of life and general health. We propose a novel approach to treating sever vocal fold scarring by replacing the entirety of the vocal fold mucosa with a tissue engineered implant, the cell-based outer vocal fold replacement (COVR). We hypothesized that intermediate and long-term implantation of human stem-cell derived COVR …

The Effect Of Cardiopulmonary Disease On Lymph Node Hyperplasia And Structural Deviations, Yuhyun Kang
The Effect Of Cardiopulmonary Disease On Lymph Node Hyperplasia And Structural Deviations, Yuhyun Kang
PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship
INTRODUCTION: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cardiac and pulmonary disease consistently rank on the top leading causes of death in the United States. Therefore, the different pathologies of the heart and lungs are studied extensively in the medical community. Current research hints at the possible association between the lymphatic system's dysfunction and cardiopulmonary disease's pathological progression. However, the effect of cardiopulmonary disease on the lymph nodes is not well known. A better understanding of the possible pathological changes to the lymphatic system associated with cardiopulmonary disease could help guide medical interventions.

Climate Change's Free Rider Problem: Why We Must Relinquish Freedom To Become Free, Natalie M. Roy
Climate Change's Free Rider Problem: Why We Must Relinquish Freedom To Become Free, Natalie M. Roy
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
Despite the increasing urgency of climate change, countries continue to struggle to cooperate on even modest solutions. Of international accords that are successfully ratified, agreed-upon commitments are mostly hortatory and vague, succeeding only in engendering a fragmented, voluntary compliance scheme. Unsurprisingly, decades of tepid climate action and procrastination have begotten a staggering emissions gap for the world to close by 2030—requiring a collective greenhouse gas reduction of about fifty percent to limit global warming to the 1.5°C benchmark. Yet, global greenhouse emissions have generally risen, not fallen in the last decade, with 2018 marking a record high despite pledges made …

Regulatory Agency Capture: How The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Approved The Mountain Valley Pipeline, Aakshi Agarwal
Regulatory Agency Capture: How The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Approved The Mountain Valley Pipeline, Aakshi Agarwal
Harvey M. Applebaum ’59 Award
The FERC’s history of approving nearly 100% of pipelines and divisive pipeline cases like the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and Mountain Valley Pipeline have driven landowners’ long-standing claims of regulatory agency capture of the FERC. The present research substantiates the claim of capture with a case study of the Mountain Valley Pipeline and uncovers that the FERC is both culturally and corrosively captured. This research also suggests that the capture of the FERC began at its conception during the natural gas crisis and subsequent natural gas bubble, which caused the FERC to follow the industry’s lead. These findings indicate that the …
“The Plain, Old Faith”: Theological Foundations For A Scientifically Informed Constructive Doctrine Of Original Sin In The Wesleyan Tradition, Logan Patriquin
“The Plain, Old Faith”: Theological Foundations For A Scientifically Informed Constructive Doctrine Of Original Sin In The Wesleyan Tradition, Logan Patriquin
The Asbury Journal
How should Wesleyans integrate modern understandings of science with theological commitments to the idea of original sin? After offering some historical context for Wesley’s engagement with the doctrine of original sin, this article aims to put contemporary socio- scientific discussions. The authority of scripture is engaged in light of Wesley’s “analogy of faith” and James K. A. Smith’s “Narrative-Arc” theological method. Insights of evolutionary psychology and sociobiology are then combined with Wesley’s understanding of universal human sinfulness and regenerating grace. The article explores Wesley’s holistic theological anthropology and contemporary emergence theory in their respective attempts to understand sin’s nefarious substance …

Characterization Of Impact Pile Driving Signals And Fin Whale Vocalizations At The Block Island Wind Farm Site, Jennifer L. Amaral
Open Access Dissertations
Offshore wind farm development is rapidly expanding and with that comes the need for assessment of the potential short and long term environmental impacts. As a by-product of the construction, operation, and eventual decommissioning of offshore wind farms, sound is generated both in air and underwater through various activities and mechanisms. With the rate of wind farm development continuing to increase worldwide, regulatory agencies, industry, and scientists are attentive to the potential physiological and behavioral effects these sounds might have on marine life living in the surrounding environment. The impact pile driving used to install the wind turbine foundations is …

The spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria poses a significant threat to human health. Plasma activated liquids (PAL) could be a promising alternative for microbial decontamination, where different PAL can possess diverse antimicrobial efficacies and cytotoxic profiles, depending on the range and concentration of their reactive chemical species. In this research, the biological activity of plasma activated water (PAW) on different biological targets including both microbiological and mammalian cells was investigated in vitro. The aim was to further an understanding of the specific role of distinct plasma reactive species, which is required to tailor plasma activated liquids for use in applications where …

School Gardening In America And A Survey Of South Dakota Schools, Aminah Hassoun
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
School gardening has a longstanding history in American education, dating as far back as the mid-1800s. Despite fluctuations in popularity throughout the twentieth century, school gardens have grown into an established method for hands-on teaching. This paper builds upon a historical framework of school gardening in American public education with particular focus on the connections between school gardens and agricultural education. This study offers a descriptive portrait of contemporary K-12 school gardens in South Dakota. Schools across the state were surveyed about their gardens to gain a better understanding of garden-based teaching in practice both in general education and agricultural …
An Integrative Analysis On The Role Of Notch1 And Notch3 In Musculoskeletal Disease, Haydee Magdalena Torres
An Integrative Analysis On The Role Of Notch1 And Notch3 In Musculoskeletal Disease, Haydee Magdalena Torres
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Notch signaling is an evolutionarily conserved signaling pathway involved in cell fate decisions and cell renewal of multiple systems, including skeletal and muscle homeostasis. As the multifunctional nuclear complex of Notch1 is essential for its pathological function, identifying these interacting partners represents a potentially broad range of druggable vulnerabilities. We have completed a BioID proteomics study and found a large set of nuclear proteins associated with NOTCH1, including transcriptional regulators and epigenetic modulators, of which Histone Deacetylase 1 (HDAC1) is a promising interacting partner of Notch1. Our Cytoscape analysis predicted HDAC1 to be a top critical node in an activated …
Bio-Inspired Materials For Electrochemical Sensors, Matthew Joseph Hummel
Bio-Inspired Materials For Electrochemical Sensors, Matthew Joseph Hummel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Electrochemical biosensors are a rapidly growing research area that has greatly improved its specificity, accuracy, and precision in the detection of biomolecules in contemporary literature and industry alike. Typically, these systems exist in a three-electrode conformation with a working electrode functioning as the anode, a counter electrode functioning as the cathode, and a reference electrode allowing for the control of potential in the system. The method by which these sensors work is through the sharing of electrons via redox reactions with the target molecule and the working electrode or modifications on its surface. By exploiting the function of biomaterials that …
A Bitten Apple And A Bloody Key: Feminist Revisionism At The Intersection Of The Eden Myth And The Bluebeard Tale, Jacob Ford
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the feminist revisionism of the Bluebeard fairy tale through a focus on its relationship with the Eden myth. Past studies have examined the remarkable feminism of Bluebeardian literature and history, but this thesis is the first to interrogate the tale’s evolution from and alongside the Eden myth and to argue that the Bluebeard tale’s feminism is exceptional because of its ties to the Eden myth. I argue that the evolution of the intersecting revisionism of the Eden myth and the Bluebeard tale is characterized by the changing morals of the two myths—morals that, depending on the author’s …
An Exploration Of The Effects Of An Early Postpartum Intravenous Infusion With Carnosic Acid On Physiological Responses Of Transition Dairy Cows, Tainara Michelotti
An Exploration Of The Effects Of An Early Postpartum Intravenous Infusion With Carnosic Acid On Physiological Responses Of Transition Dairy Cows, Tainara Michelotti
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The transition period is commonly defined as the last 3 wk before parturition to 3 wk after parturition. It is the most critical stage of the lactation cycle of high-producing dairy cows. The period consists of a complex interplay of metabolic and hormonal adaptations, inflammation, and immune activation. During the transition period, dairy cows commonly face oxidative stress, an underlying factor for dysfunctional immune response and enhanced inflammation, which can further increase the susceptibility of dairy cattle to health disorders and decrease productivity. In the last few decades, there has been an increased interest in studying alternative natural compounds with …

Auxin-Based Herbicide Program And Rhizobia Application For Weed Control And Nodulation Potential In Auxin Tolerant Soybean, Joy Amajioyi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Foliar-applied Bradyrhizobia to V4 soybean has been reported to increase yield up to 5%. However, a stand-alone product application may not be practical. Applying with other treatments such as post-emergence herbicide application may be economical but herbicide and/or additives may be deleterious to rhizobial growth. A laboratory study investigated the impact of herbicides (glyphosate and dicamba), additives (an oil to improve absorption and spreading; and AMS used to overcome hard water impacts on glyphosate), and herbicide + additives on bacterial growth. Optical density (OD) measurements at the wavelength of 650 nm assessed solution turbidity, a surrogate measure of bacterial growth. …

Search For New Fertility Markers In Bull Sperm, Saulo Menegatti Zoca
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sperm are stored for extended periods of time in the epididymis, but upon ejaculation motility is increased and lifespan is decreased. After insemination, sperm must traverse the female barriers and undergo capacitation to complete fertilization; however, there are differences in fertility even among bulls that successfully pass a breeding soundness exam. For any potential marker of fertility, there must be variability expressed among animals. The series of studies in this dissertation had the objective 1) to evaluate differences between epididymal and ejaculated sperm and respective fluids proteins to understand increased longevity of epididymal sperm; 2) to evaluate the potential of …

Cyberbullying: The Digital World Of Awareness And Emerging Concerns, Christian Jean-Baptiste
Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-
The digital world of social media that we’ve all become familiar with by now, has taken over social networking sites (SNS) by storm—such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, etc. We use these online platforms today as a medium to communicate digitally to people all over the world—from friends, to family, loved ones, or even just to meet new people. While that may seem like a vast majority of what the Internet looks like today, there’s still that whole other realm of darkness that haunts people who have been victimized, threatened, intimidated, humiliated, and harassed. The Internet is a world, …
Hiding Homelessness: The Transcarceration Of Homelessness, Sara Rankin
Hiding Homelessness: The Transcarceration Of Homelessness, Sara Rankin
Faculty Articles
Cities throughout the country respond to homelessness with laws that persecute people for surviving in public space, even when unsheltered people lack a reasonable alternative. This widespread practice—the criminalization of homelessness—processes vulnerable people through the criminal justice system with damaging results. But recently, from the epicenter of the homelessness crisis along the West Coast, the Ninth Circuit extended the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment to cities prosecuting unsheltered people for sleeping or camping in public space in Martin v. Boise. Boise, supported by amici from scores of other Western cities and counties, filed a petition for …

This article focuses on recent developments in religious naturalism in the twenty-first century, building on Jerome Stone’s 2008 study of its resurgence in the mid-twentieth century. I introduce religious naturalism as a synthesis of naturalistic ideas that often depart from traditional forms of religious thinking, defining it as a capacious, ecological religious worldview grounded in the observational conviction that nature is ultimate. I also describe different models of religious naturalism, focusing on the key ideas found in the influential publications of contemporary religious naturalists (e.g., Ursula Goodenough, Donald Crosby, Loyal Rue, among others). While acknowledging specific points of emphasis, I …

We begin by arguing that the often used algorithm for the discovery and use of disease risk factors, stepwise logistic regression, is unstable. We then argue that there are other algorithms available that are much more stable and reliable (e.g. the lasso and gradient boosting). We then propose a protocol for the discovery and use of risk factors using lasso or boosting variable selection. We then illustrate the use of the protocol with a set of prostate cancer data and show that it recovers known risk factors. Finally, we use the protocol to identify new and important SNP based risk …
Religious Non-Affiliation: Expelled By The Right, William Vance Trollinger
Religious Non-Affiliation: Expelled By The Right, William Vance Trollinger
Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty
For the past century, the bulk of white evangelicalism has been tightly linked to very conservative politics. But in response to social and cultural changes in the 1960s and 1970s, conservative white evangelicalism organized itself into the Christian Right, in the process attaching itself to and making itself indispensable to the Republican Party. While the Christian Right has enjoyed significant political success, its fusion of evangelicalism/Christianity with right-wing politics—which includes white nationalism, hostility to immigrants, unfettered capitalism, and intense homophobia—has driven many Americans (particularly, young Americans) to disaffiliate from religion altogether. In fact, the quantitative and qualitative evidence make it …

How About That Extension? Biomechanical Roles Of Spines In Crustacean Nauplii, Emily N. Branam , '21
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
Marine plankton possess elongated body structures, such as spines and horns, that increase drag on the body. While these extensions are often considered an anti-predation mechanism, the biomechanical implications of these structures are less studied. Using the barnacle nauplii Octolasmis spp., I explore the role of one such body extension, the dorsal thoracic spine, through amputation. Motion analysis revealed slower swimming and more erratic trajectories in dorsal thoracic spine amputees than those in control. Limb kinematic adjustments such as a larger beat amplitude, increased phase lag, and reduced contralateral symmetry were observed in amputees. While these changes may act …

Latin American Immigrants: A Cry For Liberation, Julio César De León
Say Something Theological: The Student Journal of Theological Studies
The United States, due to its economic stability and abundant opportunities (among other reasons), has attracted many immigrants from across the globe, but particularly those from Latin America. The reality is that while many immigrate under more favorable circumstances, the majority of Latinos/as (usually the ones most in need) embark on a dangerous journey, overcoming the difficulties they encounter on the way. Although there is great hope in having arrived to the U.S., for those who make it to the other side of the frontier, their suffering often continues as their social status becomes that of undocumented immigrants. Through the …

The Book Of Hours For A 21st Century World, Francesco Fimiani
Say Something Theological: The Student Journal of Theological Studies
This ‘Book of Hours’ project begins on the Monday hours of the Dead all the way to the Sunday Hours of the Trinity and is inspired almost entirely by the 1440 Book of Hours of the Dutchess Catherine of Cleeves. This project is the sum product of a semester’s worth of instruction from my Medieval Religious Thought and Practice class taught by Professor Anna Harrison. The main purpose of this art installment is to show that even though they originate from a society highly unlike ours today, facing issues that medieval people couldn’t even begin to imagine, they can be …
Delegation, Administration, And Improvisation, Kevin Arlyck
Delegation, Administration, And Improvisation, Kevin Arlyck
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Nondelegation originalism is having its moment. Recent Supreme Court opinions suggest that a majority of justices may be prepared to impose strict constitutional limits on Congress’s power to delegate policymaking authority to the executive branch. In response, scholars have scoured the historical record for evidence affirming or refuting a more stringent version of nondelegation than current Supreme Court doctrine demands. Though the debate ranges widely, sharp disputes have arisen over whether a series of apparently broad Founding-era delegations defeat originalist arguments in favor of a more stringent modern doctrine. Proponents—whom I call “nondelegationists”—argue that these historical delegations can all be …
