© 2020 The Authors. Ecology and Evolution published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd Human activities in coastal areas are accelerating ecosystem changes at an unprecedented pace, resulting in habitat loss, hydrological modifications, and predatory species declines. Understanding how these changes potentially cascade across marine and freshwater ecosystems requires knowing how mobile euryhaline species link these seemingly disparate systems. As upper trophic level predators, bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) play a crucial role in marine and freshwater ecosystem health. Telemetry studies in Mobile Bay, Alabama, suggest that bull sharks extensively use the northern portions of the bay, an estuarine–freshwater interface known …

Ocean Acidification And Carbon Limitation Affect Photosynthetic Capacity Of The Seagrass (Amphibolis Antarctica) And Its Calcifying Epiphytes, Daniel Grove Jan 2021

Ocean Acidification And Carbon Limitation Affect Photosynthetic Capacity Of The Seagrass (Amphibolis Antarctica) And Its Calcifying Epiphytes, Daniel Grove

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Amphibolis antarctica seagrass meadows, and their associated calcifying epiphytes, are abundant on Australia’s west coast, but have declined in recent years due to anthropogenic factors such as marine heatwaves, damaging fishing practices and increased turbidity resulting from eutrophication which causes light limitation. Burning fossil fuels has increased the flux of CO2 in to the ocean, lowering surface seawater pH, and making more carbon available for photosynthetic life. There are benefits of increasing CO2 for those seagrasses that are carbon limited, as this alleviates their energetic use of carbon concentrating mechanisms (CCM’S) which are less efficient, and more energy costly than …

An Investigation Into The Social Interaction And Demonstration Of Preference For Location Of Cows In A Commercial Dairy Herd., Joanne Vincent Jan 2021

An Investigation Into The Social Interaction And Demonstration Of Preference For Location Of Cows In A Commercial Dairy Herd., Joanne Vincent

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Under free-ranging conditions cattle live in social groups because it is beneficial to them in terms of risk of predation, breeding synchronisation and collective intelligence, amongst others. However, current dairy cattle management practice is not geared toward management of the cow for her social wellbeing but rather for the ability to feed and manage appropriately and meet the cows’ main needs that affect productivity and profitability. Domestic dairy cattle do not have free ranging opportunities. Heifers are managed in cohort groups from birth to calving and have little, if any, interaction with the adult herd until they calve. This study …

Effects Of Dietary Additives On Growth Performance, Immunity And Mucosal Barrier Defences Of Salmonids, Nicola Pontefract Jan 2021

Effects Of Dietary Additives On Growth Performance, Immunity And Mucosal Barrier Defences Of Salmonids, Nicola Pontefract

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The mucosal surfaces of fish are considered highly active immunological sites that work to maintain homeostasis and play a key role in the defence against pathogens (Yu et al., 2020). While disease represents a major constraint to the aquaculture industry, the potential influence of dietary additives upon the mucosal barriers and defences of fish is the subject of increasing amounts of research. RT-q-PCR gene expression analysis and histological examinations of experiment one jointly indicate the potential of a dietary prebiotic mixture, a parabiotic and their synbiotic to positively influence the mucosal barrier defences of the Gill-(GIALT), Skin-(SALT) and Gut- associated …

The Effectiveness Of Partially Protected Marine Areas For Ecosystem Based Management, Bede Ffinian Rowe Davies Jan 2021

The Effectiveness Of Partially Protected Marine Areas For Ecosystem Based Management, Bede Ffinian Rowe Davies

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The oceans provide highly important benefits to humans, ranging from sustenance and travel to livelihoods and spiritual wellbeing to climate stabilisation. Yet, globally the use of the marine environment has been unsustainable with extensive pressure being applied either directly or indirectly. This has led to the degradation of almost all marine ecosystems, with no system considered pristine from the depths of the Marianas trench to the inshore seas.Destabilisation of the ocean systems is jeopardising their ability to slow down the effects of climate change. This destabilisation is being driven in part by unsustainable and destructive human practises, such as: overfishing, …

Personality Assessment In Zoo-Housed Siamang Gibbons And Sulawesi Macaques., Lewis James Rowden

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Personality, differences in individual behaviour that are consistent across time and situations, have relatively recently been determined in a wide range of non-human animals. As the existence of animal personality increases within the scientific literature, the scope for practical application of knowledge increases concurrently. This study aimed to investigate ways in which personality data can be applied to the ex-situ management of threatened primate species. The first part of this research quantified personality in the European zoo population of Symphalangus syndactylus, including validation of trait rating techniques. Personality data were then applied to the study of reproductive success. Secondly, the …

Disentangling The Roles Of Social And Physical Environment In Driving Reproductive Plasticity, Emily Rose Churchill Jan 2021

Disentangling The Roles Of Social And Physical Environment In Driving Reproductive Plasticity, Emily Rose Churchill

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Resource patchiness results in spatially fluctuating population densities and thus variable levels of competition. If different traits are favoured in different population densities, individuals should adjust their physiology and behaviour in response, to maximise their fitness. In this thesis I manipulate resource distributions to investigate the implications this has on the social environment, and the sex differences in subsequent reproductive responses. Under high levels of perceived sperm competition, male Drosophila melanogaster will lengthen copulation durations. Despite this being a well established responses, little is known about the biological mechanism that facilitates this behaviour, as most of the studies that have …

The understanding of the evolution of variable sex determination mechanisms across taxa requires comparative studies among closely related species. Following the fate of a known master sex-determining gene, we traced the evolution of sex determination in an entire teleost order (Esociformes). We discovered that the northern pike (Esox lucius) master sex-determining gene originated from a 65 to 90 million-year-old gene duplication event and that it remained sex-linked on undifferentiated sex chromosomes for at least 56 million years in multiple species. We identified several independent species-or population-specific sex determination transitions, including a recent loss of a Y-chromosome. These findings highlight the …

Thermal-Induced Unfolding-Refolding Of A Nucleocapsid Covn Protein, Warin Rangubpit, Pornthep Sompornpisut, R. B. Pandey Jan 2021

Thermal-Induced Unfolding-Refolding Of A Nucleocapsid Covn Protein, Warin Rangubpit, Pornthep Sompornpisut, R. B. Pandey

Faculty Publications

Unfolding of a coarse-grained COVN protein from its native configuration shows a linear response with increasing temperature followed by non-monotonic double peaks in its radius of gyration. The protein conforms to a random coil of folded segments in native state with increasingly tenuous and globular structures in specific temperature regimes where the effective dimensions of corresponding structures D ≈ 1.6–2.4. Thermal agitation alone is not sufficient to fully eradicate its segmental folding as few local folds are found to persist around such residues as 65L, 110Y, 224L, 374P even at high temperatures.

Structural Controls And Hydrogeochemical Properties Of Geothermal Fields In The Vartoregion, East Anatolia, Taygun Uzelli̇, Mehmet Furkan Şener, İskender Dölek, Alper Baba, Hasan Sözbi̇li̇r, Ramazan Kadi̇r Di̇ri̇k

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Varto and the surrounding region have important geothermal fields, developing in strike-slip tectonic setting in East Anatolia, which resulted from the collision of the Arabian and Eurasian plates. The main structural elements in the area are the NE-trending sinistral and NW-trending dextral strike-slip fault segments and N-S trending extension zones. In order to determine fault-controlled geothermal circulation, it is very important to fully characterize the structural elements in these complex environments. The widely distributed volcanic rocks have fracture and crack systems that play an important role in surface infiltration, geothermal fluid, and groundwater circulation. Especially in areas where the fault …
