Cultural And Linguistic Experiences Of Immigrant Youth: Voices Of African Immigrant Youth In United States Urban Schools, Lydiah Kananu Kiramba, Alex Kumi-Yeboah, Patriann Smith, Anthony Mawuli Sallard
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
This study explores experiences of 50 culturally and linguistically diverse African immigrant students attending public urban middle and high schools in the US. Drawing on in-depth interviews, and through constant comparison analysis, emerging findings highlight pedagogical, linguistic, and curricular variation struggles in the classroom; transitional contextual challenges; cultural mismatch; miscommunication, and stereotypes. In light of these experiences, African immigrant urban youth draw on familial, navigational and aspirational capital to resist stereotypical assumptions and to develop resilient skills necessary to navigate the inherent challenges. Findings underscore the importance of appreciating ways of knowing that deviate from the host country knowledges as …

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the most common motorneuron (MN) disease in adulthood. ALS is hallmarked by the progressive loss of MNs in the brain, brainstem, and spinal cord. Many hypotheses to explain the pathogenesis of ALS have been explored, but the exact mechanisms underlying the development of this disease remain unknown. However, abnormalities in MN excitability and glutamate excitotoxicity are the most widely studied. For decades, researchers have examined MN excitability in ALS, but the current literature is inconsistent, showing evidence of hyperexcitability, hypoexcitability, or no change in excitability of MNs in ALS. Many of these studies also focus …

Farmer Suicide: Rates, Trends, And Associations To Commodity Production Among States Reporting Violent Deaths, 2003-2017, Paul Norrod
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Occupational studies show that farmers are at higher risk for suicide with rates at least two-fold those of the U.S. population.2-4 Therefore, the purpose of this study was to (1) determine age- and sex-specific farmer suicide rates, (2) evaluate rate trends, and (3) assess the relationship between commodity production and farmer suicide using the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) and quinquennial Census of Agriculture. We identified 1,652 farmer suicide cases from the NVDRS. Age-specific rates showed the highest rates among male farmers over 64 at 14.03 per 100,000. Annual rates for the 15-year study period peaked during 2013 at …

Exploring Best Practices In Geoscience Education: Adapting A Video/Animation On Continental Rifting For Upper-Division Students To A Lower-Division Audience, Siloa Willis, Robert J. Stern, Jeffrey Ryan, Christy Bebeau
School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Well-crafted and scientifically accurate videos and animations can be effective ways to teach dynamic Earth processes such as continental rifting, both in live course offerings as well as in online settings. However, a quick search of the internet reveals too few high-quality videos/animations describing deep Earth processes. We have modified a hybrid 10.5 min video/animation about continental rifting and the formation of new oceans and passive continental margins created for an upper-division geology audience, retailoring it for a lower-division geology audience. A key challenge in successfully modifying such resources is aligning the cognitive load that the video/animation imposes on students, …

Needs Assessment, Program Development, And Pilot Testing: Training For Occupational Therapy Students Working With Survivors Of Gun Violence, Lea Fang, Aisha Mohammed, Vicki Kaskutas
Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
After the first year of operation, members of a student-staffed occupational therapy (OT) clinic found that 36% of their patients’ injuries were violence-related, mostly due to gun violence. The purposes of this project were to identify unmet needs of survivors of violence seen in a clinic setting, identify treating professionals’ preparedness to meet these needs, and develop and pilot test a program within the scope of OT to address these needs. A literature review and key informant interviews, surveys, and focus groups identified potential solutions to address gaps between patients’ needs and professionals’ preparedness to meet those needs. The need …

Snakes are common predators of birds. However, reported cases of snake predation on Troglodytes musculus are scarce. Here, we report a predation attempt of a Troglodytes musculus nestling by the dipsadid snake Philodryas olfersii. We also present a list with bird species recorded as prey of this snake species. We found 25 predation events of P. olfersii on adult, juvenile, and nestling birds. A total of 19 bird species from 14 families have been reported as prey of P. olfersii. Most predation events occurred on the vegetation, while some others were observed on the ground, cage, and artificial nest.

Neotropical Biodiversity
The high Andean Polylepis woodlands are home to a unique biota, including an outstanding avifauna. They are one of the most threatened mountain ecosystems worldwide; accordingly, they have been the object of the first restoration initiatives in South America. Here, we evaluated the effectiveness of 20-year Polylepis australis woodland restoration efforts to recover the woodland bird communities. We recorded bird diversity and abundance in an ongoing restoration site (with a high proportion of woodland) and in a control site, where no active restoration efforts were made (with a high proportion of grasslands and bare soil), 15 and 20 years after …

Mammalian dung represents a primary feeding and reproductive resource for most dung beetle species. Competition for the trophic resource is common among the subfamily Scarabaeinae showing different habits depending on the quantity and quality of food available. In this study, we evaluated the dung of six species of mammal native to Chiapas (Mexico) as attractants for sampling dung beetles. The six species have different feeding habits (carnivores, herbivores and omnivores) and the feces used were obtained from Zoo animals fed a standard diet. Sampling efficiency was over 99% for each of the attractants. Tapirus bairdii feces attracted the highest abundance, …
Feeding Of Humpback Whales In Low Latitudes Of The Southeast Pacific Ocean, Ana M. García Cegarra, Cristina Castro, Koen Van Waerebeek
Feeding Of Humpback Whales In Low Latitudes Of The Southeast Pacific Ocean, Ana M. García Cegarra, Cristina Castro, Koen Van Waerebeek
Neotropical Biodiversity
Humpback whales perform long migrations from their breeding and nursing areas at low latitudes to feeding grounds at high latitudes. Nonetheless, this strictly dichotomous paradigm of migration is challenged by accumulating examples of occasional or regular feeding at low latitudes for several stocks worldwide. Here, we report multiple evidences of “Stock G” humpback whales feeding in coastal waters, at low latitudes of the Southeast Pacific Ocean. Lunge feeding behavior and defecation were observed in Ecuador, while both lunge- and trap feeding in pursuit of Peruvian anchovy was documented in northern Chile. A photographically re-sighted individual feeding at different latitudes of …

Projecting The Theoretical Niche Of A Recently Re-Discovered Population Of Feral Asian Water Buffalo (Bubalus Bubalis) In The North Rupununi Wetlands, Guyana, Matthew T. Hallett, Gerard Pereira, Oswin Ambrose, Diane Mcturk, Brittany A. Bankovich
Neotropical Biodiversity
We provide documentation of a population of feral domestic Asian water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) that has persisted in the wetlands of the North Rupununi Region of Guyana for more than 75 years. Historical records indicate that water buffalo were incidentally introduced to the Rupununi by the colonial administration of British Guiana. Personal observations, camera trap photos, and reports of opportunistic encounters populate our maximum-entropy model, which projects a total of 2,489 km2 of suitable water buffalo habitat across the region, including 1,076 km2 of the RAMSAR-nominated North Rupununi wetlands (~11% of total land area). Key informants indicate that populations appear …
Two Constitutional Rights, Two Constitutional Controversies, Michael J. Perry
Two Constitutional Rights, Two Constitutional Controversies, Michael J. Perry
Faculty Articles
My overarching aim in the Article is to defend a particular understanding of two constitutional rights and, relatedly, a particular resolution of two constitutional controversies. The two rights I discuss are among the most important rights protected by the constitutional law of the United States: the right to equal protection and the right of privacy. As I explain in the Article, the constitutional right to equal protection is, at its core, the human right to moral equality, and the constitutional right to privacy is best understood as a version of the human right to moral freedom. The two controversies I …

Integrating Storytelling Into The Theory And Practice Of Contextual Behavioral Science, Carter H. Davis, Brandon A. Gaudiano, Louise Mchugh, Michael E. Levin
Psychology Student Research
The practice of generating and interpreting stories can be examined through a behavioral lens and has many potential implications for clinical practice. However, storytelling has for the most part yet to be integrated into the field of contextual behavioral science (CBS). A bedrock of human culture, storytelling has influenced both individual behavior and intergroup cooperation for millennia. Basic principles of relational frame theory, such as those pertaining to coherence, perspective-taking, and the transformation of stimulus function, may help to reveal how stories derive their psychological impact. In turn, understanding storytelling from a CBS perspective can facilitate the broader integration of …
Utilization Of Cardiac Time Intervals By A Customized Electrocardiography And Phonocardiography Device To Evaluate Cardiac Function In Healthy And Degenerative Mitral Valve Disease (Dmvd) Dogs, Karlo Romano Gicana
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Cardiac time intervals (CTI) are the indices that provide information on the systolic and diastolic function of the heart. The use of echocardiography is considered the gold standard tool for recognizing cardiac diseases and for describing these CTI. However, factors such as accessibility, cost, and expertise are challenging. Hence, there is the need for an alternative diagnostic tool to measure CTI. This study aimed to investigate the use of a custom and commercially available device that simultaneously recorded both electrocardiogram (ECG) and phonocardiogram (PCG) to determine various CTI in healthy and dogs with degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD). These measurements …

Protective Effect Of Intranasal Asiatic Acid In Scopolamine-Induced Memory Impairment In Mice, Su Lwin Lwin Myint
Protective Effect Of Intranasal Asiatic Acid In Scopolamine-Induced Memory Impairment In Mice, Su Lwin Lwin Myint
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Asiatic acid (AA), a major constituent of Centella asiatica extract, possesses various pharmacological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammation, and neuroprotective effects. Low oral bioavailability has limited AA penetration to the brain. The intranasal administration increases the efficacy of drug by passing blood brain barrier and by avoiding the metabolism by hepatic enzyme. This study investigated the protective effect and the mechanisms of intranasal asiatic acid in scopolamine-induced memory impairment in mice. Mice are divided into seven groups; control (Con), scopolamine (3 mg/kg; Sco), scopolamine plus donepezil (3 mg/kg; Don), scopolamine plus intranasal asiatic acid (2.31 mg/kg; INAA) and scopolamine plus oral …

Formulation Development And Evaluation Of Spray-Dried Astaxanthin-Loaded Self-Microemulsifying Delivery Systems In Tablets, Wai Thet Aung
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
An antioxidant activity of astaxanthin (AST) is one of the desirable bioactive properties for nutraceutical and pharmaceutical products. However, poor aqueous solubility and high possibility of degradation of AST limit its efficacy of oral absorption and bioavailability. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop and optimize the spray-dried astaxanthin-loaded self-microemulsifying delivery system (SMEDS) in tablets to improve solubility, dissolution, and bioavailability of AST. By using a mixture design, liquid AST SMEDS (L-AST SMEDS) formulations containing rice bran oil, Kolliphor® RH40, and Span® 20 were optimized based on the desirability function. The optimal L-AST SMEDS composed of rice bran …

Diagnostic Accuracy Of The Timed Up-And-Go Test With Different Types Of Cognitive Tasks For Mild Cognitive Impairment In Older Adults, Kanyakon Chanabangkaew
Diagnostic Accuracy Of The Timed Up-And-Go Test With Different Types Of Cognitive Tasks For Mild Cognitive Impairment In Older Adults, Kanyakon Chanabangkaew
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The Timed Up-and-Go test (TUG) test with cognitive tasks was a motor and cognitive dual-task approach used to evaluate the level of cognitive ability in older adults. Moreover, the different types of cognitive tasks challenge different aspects of cognition and impact performance differently. To our knowledge, the accuracy of the TUG test with different types of cognitive tasks still lacks information regarding which cognitive tasks and test outcomes are optimal to use. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the accuracy of the TUG test with different types of cognitive tasks to detect older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). …

Diet Analysis Of Kitti’S Hog-Nosed Bat Craseonycteris Thonglongyai Hill, 1974 Using Next Generation Sequencing Technique, Monsicha Wangthongchaicharoen
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Kitti's hog-nosed bat Craseonycteris thonglongyai, Hill 1974 was a vulnerable species in IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2008. However, this species was reassessed to be near threatened species due to roosting caves discovery resulted in the increased total population size. Despite that, disturbance on its roosting and foraging sites from human activities are still occurred. Previous studies proposed that Kitti’s hog-nosed bats forage using familiar flight path within short distance from roosting cave. The foraging bouts were also short. Thus, there is a limitation on food availability in this bat species. Moreover, bats in different sexes and reproductive …

Adoption Factors Of The Internet Of Things In Quality Management Of The Thai Food Processing Supply Chain: Manufacturing Perspectives, Pakorn Opasvitayarux
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The introduction of quality management Internet of things (QM IoT) can help food supply chain members to enhance real-time visibility, quality, safety, and efficiency of products and processes. Current literature indicates three main research gaps, including lack of studies in QM IoT in food supply chain, vagueness of integrative adoption of new technology framework, and deficient research covered both adoption attitude and intention in the same model. This study proposed an analysis model based on the technological-organizational-environmental (TOE) framework, reinforced by the collaborative structure to capture the importance of supply chain network, and used the partial least square-structural equation modeling …
The Effect Of Low Dietary Cation–Anion Difference (Dcad) On Urine Acidification And Acid–Base Balance In Dairy Goats Under Tropical Condition, Dang Khoa Do Nguyen
The Effect Of Low Dietary Cation–Anion Difference (Dcad) On Urine Acidification And Acid–Base Balance In Dairy Goats Under Tropical Condition, Dang Khoa Do Nguyen
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Global warming is characterized by high ambient temperature (HTa). The negative effects of HTa in tropical condition have been well elucidated in dairy goats. The effect of high dietary cation-anion difference (H-DCAD) has been partially elucidated on dairy goats under tropical condition. However, there is scarce information about the low DCAD (L-DCAD) effect on dairy goats under tropical condition. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the potential effect of low DCAD on alleviating HTa effect, urine acidification, and acid-base balance in dairy goats under tropical condition. In total, twelve lactating Saanen goats (n=12) were enrolled and divided into a …
The Platelet Rich Plasma Injection Application For Canine Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease Treatment, Phanupong Chinnabrut
The Platelet Rich Plasma Injection Application For Canine Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease Treatment, Phanupong Chinnabrut
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The etiology of canine Legg-Calve-Perthes disease (LCPD) is still unknown. The current treatments are conservative and surgery. Although non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), nutraceuticals, and rehabilitation were used in the conservative treatment, it only had a 25% success rate. In a dog with severe clinical signs and bony change in radiography, the femoral head and neck ostectomy were selected. This procedure could decrease pain, but in clinical evaluation with force plate and kinetic and kinematic measurements, the dogs were shown to have lameness. The total hip replacement was done in a dog with good clinical results, but cost was a limitation …

Plasmodium Bubalis; The Development Of An Effective Detection Method, The Course Of Infection, Co-Infection, Multi-Gene Phylogeny, And The Potential Vector, Yudhi Ratna Nugraheni
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Ungulate malaria parasites, such as the species that infects farmed dairy buffaloes (Plasmodium bubalis), have received little attention, with only a few reports in other livestock animals. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the parasites, hosts, and mosquito vectors for their biology and molecular evolution remains inadequate. This study aimed to investigate the natural infection of P. bubalis and its suspected vector, develop an effective detection method, and analyze the genome of P. bubalis and related genera. A total of 177 buffaloes’ blood samples were collected from 2019 to 2021 to evaluate the malaria infection status. Mosquitoes were also collected (1,652 …

Minimal Inhibitory And Mutant Prevention Concentrations Of Levofloxacinagainst Gram-Negative Canine Urinary Pathogenic Bacteria, Thanawit Siha-Umphai
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Levofloxacin (LEV) is one of the third-generation quinolones with broader spectrum against gram-positive and anaerobic bacteria, compared with the previous generations. LEV is an extra-label antimicrobial drug for treating systemic infection and urinary tract infection (UTI) in dogs in many countries including Thailand. Although the pharmacokinetic data of LEV in dogs has been published, its antimicrobial activity against gram-negative bacteria causing UTI is limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial activities of LEV against canine gram-negative urinary pathogenic bacteria including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These gram-negative bacteria were retrieved from dogs …
