Factory To Table: A Philosophic Analysis Of The Justice Or Lack Thereof Of Agricultural Markets, Will Carter Jan 2021

Factory To Table: A Philosophic Analysis Of The Justice Or Lack Thereof Of Agricultural Markets, Will Carter

CMC Senior Theses

How food is produced has dramatic consequences on how we live, our world’s justice, and the future of our planet. In a world increasingly driven by neoliberalism, agricultural markets have been incentivized to industrialize, globalize, and consolidate. This has resulted in the global dominance of a new type of agriculture, industrial agriculture, driven by the market logic of lowering costs and raising profits. Industrial agriculture has undoubtedly generated the profound benefit of cheaper, more plentiful food in much of the world. These favorable innovations lead many scholars to argue that free markets produce the most just and efficient arrangements for …

Climate Change In Fiction: The Evolution And Challenges Of Environmental Apocalyptic Literature, Lauren Gode Jan 2021

Climate Change In Fiction: The Evolution And Challenges Of Environmental Apocalyptic Literature, Lauren Gode

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis examines the several aspects and variations of environmental apocalyptic literature, and its potential ability to mobilize action against the imminent threat of global climate change. It delves into the intersection between climate research and fiction, as well as the rhetorical techniques used in works such as The Death of Grass by John Christopher, The Drowned World by J.G. Ballard, Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood, and The Road by Cormac McCarthy, and covers the complementarity between climate fiction and works of non-fiction such as The Great Derangement by Amitav Ghosh. Finally, this thesis will assess the effectiveness of …

Environmental Controls On The Spatial Distribution Of Greenfin Darters And Biodiversity In The Blue Ridge Mountains, Dri Tattersfield Jan 2021

Environmental Controls On The Spatial Distribution Of Greenfin Darters And Biodiversity In The Blue Ridge Mountains, Dri Tattersfield

CMC Senior Theses

Disproportionate concentrations of biodiversity in mountains worldwide suggest linkages between geologic processes and biodiversity that are not yet well understood. The Tennessee River Basin in the Blue Ridge Mountains of the southeastern U.S. is a global hotspot for freshwater fish biodiversity. To investigate drivers of biodiversity in the Tennessee River Basin, and explore links to geologic processes, I study the Greenfin Darter (Nothonotus chlorobranchius), a small fish endemic to the upper Tennessee River Basin. I use generalized linear models (GLMs) to evaluate the influence of topography, lithology, climate and land use on the distribution of the Greenfin Darter, …

Using Nmr Spectroscopy And Computational Chemistry To Confirm The Structure Of Novel Antibiotic Nocamycin O, Stephanie Lewis Jan 2021

Using Nmr Spectroscopy And Computational Chemistry To Confirm The Structure Of Novel Antibiotic Nocamycin O, Stephanie Lewis

CMC Senior Theses

In recent years, many medically promising antibiotics have been discovered in nature, especially in insect-microbe symbioses. One of the better-studied examples of this kind of defensive relationship is that of fungus-growing ants and the antibiotic-producing Actinobacteria. These bacteria produce several defensive chemicals with myriad uses, including one antibiotic that inhibits the growth of several bacterial strains, including other Actinobacteria. This antibiotic (known as nocamycin O) is a promising candidate for medicinal use due to its similarities to bacterial RNA polymerase inhibitors tirandamycin and streptolydigin, which inhibit several human pathogens. The determination of the structure of nocamycin O will be an …

Captives & Spoils In Chicago: Examining The Columbian Exposition’S Triumphal Procession Of 1893, Kazandra Zelaya Jan 2021

Captives & Spoils In Chicago: Examining The Columbian Exposition’S Triumphal Procession Of 1893, Kazandra Zelaya

CMC Senior Theses

Daniel Burnham’s vision of a classical revival in the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 brought ancient Roman triumph with its captives and spoils to Chicago, Illinois. Burnham’s restorative urban utopia used Beaux-Arts architecture in the exposition’s White City that evoked the image of Roman triumphal processions. Beaux-Arts architecture did not extend into the Midway Plaisance, however, the model of Roman triumph extended into the ethnographic exhibits. By examining the ethnographic exhibits of the Midway as a version of a Roman triumphal procession, the exhibits highlighted novel types of captivity through sponsorships, wages, and erasure. Illustrations of American imperialism in the …

Jay Chou’S Kuso Music: Cultural Fusion In The Age Of The Internet, Stz-Tsung (Stone) Han Jan 2021

Jay Chou’S Kuso Music: Cultural Fusion In The Age Of The Internet, Stz-Tsung (Stone) Han

CMC Senior Theses

Jay Chou is one of the most significant singers in Chinese popular music history. One of Chou’s greatest achievements is his implementation of the Chinese “Egao” culture in his music, which originated from Japanese Kuso culture. Such an approach not only created his unique style but also allowed him to adopt various musical techniques together seamlessly. By doing so, Chou created a style that references multiple traditional musical conventions without being bound by any of them. This study aims to examine the evolution of the Kuso culture as well as Chou’s implementation of it. The development of Kuso is fostered …

Will There Be Changes In Sexually Differentiated Behaviors In Mice Manipulated For The Sry Gene As They Mature Into Adultood?, Subin Joo Jan 2021

Will There Be Changes In Sexually Differentiated Behaviors In Mice Manipulated For The Sry Gene As They Mature Into Adultood?, Subin Joo

CMC Senior Theses

Sexually differentiated behavior has been shown to be affected by both genes and hormones. The discovery of the SRY gene, which codes for the development of testes, lead to the development of the Four Core Genotypes model of mice, and the separation of sex chromosomes and its resulting gonadal hormones. Using the FCG model, this study aims to look at the development of sexually differentiated behavior in mice, and track how it changes throughout their life. FCG mice will be divided into individual and social housing, and repeated experiments carried out to test their reaction to both intact female and …

Maledictum Bulgaricus: Bulgaria’S Perpetual Stagnation Due To Its Negative National Narrative And Political Nostalgia, Yoana Sidzhimova Jan 2021

Maledictum Bulgaricus: Bulgaria’S Perpetual Stagnation Due To Its Negative National Narrative And Political Nostalgia, Yoana Sidzhimova

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis explores how Bulgaria has internalized negative outcomes in occupation, war, and it's transition to a democracy to fuel a negative national narrative and lead to the rise of political nostalgia. Then negativity and degree of political nostalgia in Bulgaria has only increased with time, stagnating the nation's development.

Rethinking The Supreme Court's Interstate Waters Jurisprudence, Jamison Colburn Jan 2021

Rethinking The Supreme Court's Interstate Waters Jurisprudence, Jamison Colburn

Faculty Scholarship

For more than a century the Supreme Court has heard a steady stream of original jurisdiction controversies “between two or more States” over interstate waters. It has for even longer heard and decided similar cases involving non-state parties from its appellate dockets. Until now, no synthesis has combined these traditions to describe and explain states’ legal interests in interstate waters as an amalgam of federal common law, Article III’s judicial federalism, and the separation of powers. This article disentangles legacy opinions, orders, and jurisdictional traditions, revealing the bundle of interests that all courts are obliged to protect. It finally offers …

Beyond The Cooperation-Conflict Conundrum: Proceedings Of An Arctic Security Webinar Series, Aldo Chircop Jan 2021

Beyond The Cooperation-Conflict Conundrum: Proceedings Of An Arctic Security Webinar Series, Aldo Chircop

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

The origins of the conference, for which this volume is the published record, go back to the fall of 2019 and the Canadian Pugwash Group’s (CPG’s) annual general meeting. Having just held a major policy conference at the University of Ottawa on “Speeding Towards the Abyss: Contemporary Arms Racing and Global Security,” the CPG was considering what should be the subject of its next policy conference. Arctic security, in all its dimensions, quickly was identified as the theme to pursue. Planning got underway with a view to holding the event in the fall of 2020 and finding suitable partners.

The Premier Should Not Also Be The Attorney General: Roncarelli V Duplessis Revisited As A Cautionary Tale In Legal Ethics And Professionalism, Andrew Flavelle Martin Jan 2021

The Premier Should Not Also Be The Attorney General: Roncarelli V Duplessis Revisited As A Cautionary Tale In Legal Ethics And Professionalism, Andrew Flavelle Martin

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

From time to time, a Premier or Prime Minister appoints themself as Attorney General. In this article, I argue that this dual portfolio is inherently and incurably problematic and should be avoided and indeed prohibited. I do so from the perspective of legal ethics and professionalism. The springboard for my analysis is the conduct of Quebec Premier and Attorney General Maurice Duplessis in the classic case of Roncarelli v Duplessis. While there may well be perceived benefits that tempt Premiers to serve in the dual role, any lawyer who does so unavoidably violates his or her professional obligations. For …

An Illusional Nuclear Taboo: Mechanisms Of Domestic Attitudinal Patterns For Extreme Methods Of War, Doreen Horschig Jan 2021

An Illusional Nuclear Taboo: Mechanisms Of Domestic Attitudinal Patterns For Extreme Methods Of War, Doreen Horschig

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This dissertation studies public attitudes toward nuclear weapons. When do people become more willing to endorse a preemptive nuclear strike against a foreign country? Utilizing theoretical insights from international relations, comparative politics, and social psychology and original experimental survey data from Israel and the U.S., this dissertation aims to answer these questions. Influential strands of scholarship argue that both the public and political elites have internalized anti-nuclear norms. The critics, however, assert that the moral nuclear taboo lacks robustness. The dissertation joins this debate by offering a novel theoretical framework informed by terror management theory (TMT) and suggests that people …

Assessing The Role Of Disturbance In Estuarine Fish Community Dynamics, Dakota Lewis Jan 2021

Assessing The Role Of Disturbance In Estuarine Fish Community Dynamics, Dakota Lewis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Ecological disturbances alter biotic communities and ecosystems. In many coastal zones disturbances are increasing, including algal blooms, storms, hypoxic events, and fish kills. These disturbances are often related, for example blooms releasing toxins or depleting dissolved oxygen, ultimately killing fish. Depending on the intensity, duration, and geographic extent of a disturbance, the fish community can take days to years to recover from disturbances. To explore the relationships among environmental disturbances, sport fish, and forage fish communities, this thesis examined two Florida estuaries with differing disturbance regimes. Using an ensemble modelling approach combining generalized linear models (GLM), Bayesian modelling, and Bayesian …

Water Damage, Rebecca Rowell Jan 2021

Water Damage, Rebecca Rowell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This novel explores the nature of good, if flawed, people that are put under intense pressure. Using alternating point-of-view characters, I showed the good and bad parts of Washington, DC and the surrounding area through the eyes of someone that has benefited from privilege and someone that has not. These juxtaposing views change over the course of the novel until both point-of-view characters have become something different than they were at the start, learning humility and trust, respectively. Through the alternating chapters, I wanted to show two viewpoints of the same city and the same set of events, each contributing …

Investigating The Spatial Relationship Between Sense Of Place And Community-Based Organizations: Do Community-Based Organizations Influence Volunteering In The Indian River Lagoon, Florida?, Erica Edmonston Jan 2021

Investigating The Spatial Relationship Between Sense Of Place And Community-Based Organizations: Do Community-Based Organizations Influence Volunteering In The Indian River Lagoon, Florida?, Erica Edmonston

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Sense of place has been used among the literature as a framework for understanding pro-environmental behavior, such as volunteering, and connections to specific areas. It is also noted that sense of place can be fostered through Community-Based Organizations However, there is limited research specific to the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), FL, on the potential influence Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) have on volunteering in the IRL. I examined secondary geographic data collected through the CNH-L: Restoration and Resilience in Coupled Human-Natural Systems: Reciprocal Dynamics of a Coastal 'Lagoon in Crisis' project funded by the National Science Foundation Grant Award Abstract No. 1617374. …

Combating Performance Anxiety: Reflections Of A Personal Anti-Anxiety Plan For Onstage And Filmed Media, Megan Friend Jan 2021

Combating Performance Anxiety: Reflections Of A Personal Anti-Anxiety Plan For Onstage And Filmed Media, Megan Friend

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

As a performer, I am still challenged with thoughts of anxiety, fear, and premeditated responses. This anxiety often prevents me from exploring choices in the rehearsal room and impedes my character's given circumstances during a performance. It has become imperative for me to explore a new way to approach a role psychologically, emotionally, and physically. I hope to eliminate the persistent problem that occurs in my process; the common gap between mind and body that prevents me from creating a dynamic, holistic performance. This document will examine two vital stages of the development and application of my new process. As …

Expanding On The Involvement Of Primary Cilia In Neurological Function Through Observing Eeg/Emg Changes In Different Genotypic Mice, Gabriella M. Palermo Jan 2021

Expanding On The Involvement Of Primary Cilia In Neurological Function Through Observing Eeg/Emg Changes In Different Genotypic Mice, Gabriella M. Palermo

Honors Theses and Capstones

Primary cilia have been known to regulate neurological functions, as primary cilia exist on astrocytes and neurons in the mature brain. More is being discovered about primary cilia and their role in the vertebrate nervous system; however, little is known about their functions and molecular pathways in the mature brain. There also lacks methods of diagnosis for primary cilia-related defects and diseases. The purpose of this project was to provide more information on the involvement of cilia in the neurological functions and offer a potential means for diagnosis of cilia-related disorders by comparing the EEG and EMG signals of wildtype …

The Continued Call And Future Of Administrative Reform In The United States, Neil Boyd Jan 2021

The Continued Call And Future Of Administrative Reform In The United States, Neil Boyd

Faculty Journal Articles

Administrative reform has been a pervasive topic in public management over the past 140 years, and recent administrations continue to implement various methods of reform. In the past 25 years, the new public management agenda has dominated the reform landscape, yet recent conversations in public management suggest that a public value governance movement is afoot. As the United States faces a potential second term of Donald Trump, it seems logical that new public management and values-based governance scholarship will continue to inhabit the landscape of public management research.

The Role Of Dopamine Signaling In Prairie Vole Peer Relationships, Nicole S. Lee, Annaliese K. Beery Jan 2021

The Role Of Dopamine Signaling In Prairie Vole Peer Relationships, Nicole S. Lee, Annaliese K. Beery

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Dopamine signaling mediates the formation of some types of social relationships, including reproductive pair bonds in the socially monogamous prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster). In addition to these pair bonds with mates, prairie voles demonstrate selective preferences for familiar same-sex peers. The dependence of peer relationships on dopamine signaling has not been tested, and the mechanisms supporting these relationships may differ from those underlying pair bonds. We examined the effects of pharmacological manipulations of dopamine signaling on peer partner preference and socially conditioned place preference in female prairie voles. Haloperidol blockade of dopamine receptors at multiple doses did not alter selective …

On Inadvertently Created Tables: A Brockean Theory Of Concrete Artifacts, Jeffrey C. Goodman Jan 2021

On Inadvertently Created Tables: A Brockean Theory Of Concrete Artifacts, Jeffrey C. Goodman

Faculty Scholarship

There has been a lot of discussion recently regarding abstract artifacts and how such entities (e.g., fictional characters like Sherlock Holmes, and mythological planets like Vulcan), if they indeed exist, could possibly be our creations.  Much of this debate has been carried out by Stuart Brock and David Friedell in this journal.  One interesting aspect of their discussion concerned the extent to which creative intentions play a role in the creation of artifacts, both abstract and concrete.  I here address the creation of concrete artifacts in particular.  I ultimately defend a Brock-inspired, heterodox view on which creative intentions are not …

Rhetorical Body Work: Professional Embodiment In Health Provider Education And The Technical Writing Classroom, Lillian Campbell Jan 2021

Rhetorical Body Work: Professional Embodiment In Health Provider Education And The Technical Writing Classroom, Lillian Campbell

English Faculty Research and Publications

This article introduces “rhetorical body work” as a framework for understanding professional embodiment in health provider education and technical and professional communication (TPC) pedagogy. Using the case study of clinical nursing simulations and drawing on sociological theory, I provide a detailed analysis of three components of rhetorical body work as they manifest in three simulation scenarios: physical, emotional, and discursive. I conclude by considering the implications of these findings for the embodied teaching of TPC.

Concomitant with an increase in the global illegal wildlife trade has been a substantial increase in research within traditional conservation-based sciences and conservation and green criminology. While the integration of criminological theories and methods into the wildlife conservation context has advanced our understanding of and practical responses to illegal wildlife trade, there remain discrepancies between the number of empirical vs. conceptual studies and a disproportionate focus on a few select theories, geographical contexts, and taxonomic groups. We present three understudied or novel applications of criminology and criminal justice research within the fields of fisheries, forestry, and wildlife conservation. First, we …

Polycystic Kidney Disease: An Examination And Review Of Disease Type, Presentation, Treatment, And Prognosis, Zoey Mann Jan 2021

Polycystic Kidney Disease: An Examination And Review Of Disease Type, Presentation, Treatment, And Prognosis, Zoey Mann

Biology and Microbiology Graduate Students Plan B Research Projects

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a ciliopathy that primarily presents as renal cysts. Inherited as either a dominant (ADPKD) or recessive (ARPKD) mutation, PKD is one of the most commonly inherited kidney diseases. ADPKD is caused by the inheritance of a mutation in either PKD1 or PKD2, which code for the polycystin-1 and -2 proteins, respectively. The less severe form of PKD, ADPKD is typically adult-onset, with the possibility of extremely late-stage presentation. In addition to renal cysts, hepatic and pancreatic cysts are common, as well as other non-cystic symptoms including headache and hypertension. ARPKD is caused by the inheritance …

Current And Future Perspectives In The Treatment Of Fracture Nonunions, Zebadiah Nelson Jan 2021

Current And Future Perspectives In The Treatment Of Fracture Nonunions, Zebadiah Nelson

Biology and Microbiology Graduate Students Plan B Research Projects

Fracture nonunions comprise one of the serious clinical complications in orthopedics. Fracture nonunions result when the time to union is greater than 6 to 9 months. It is estimated that approximately 5% to 10% of all fractures progress to fracture nonunion due to a host of complicating patient variables and risk factors. New scoring systems have emerged which help in directing the treatment strategies. Fracture nonunion management should be directed toward maintaining the diamond concept which introduces osteogenic cells lines, an osteoconductive scaffold for those cells to grow, as well as the necessary growth factors, and a stable mechanical microenvironment. …

The Relationship Between Land Use Change And Disease Prevalence, Allison Bjornstad Jan 2021

The Relationship Between Land Use Change And Disease Prevalence, Allison Bjornstad

Biology and Microbiology Graduate Students Plan B Research Projects

Zoonotic disease outbreaks are becoming more novel and are increasing in frequency. This increase can be partially attributed to land use changes including deforestation, urbanization, and cultivation. Land use change alters disease prevalence by causing an increase in contact rates between disease hosts and humans. Land use changes also alter species compositions in the area to contain more competent disease hosts. Each pathogen can react to these changes in different ways. The specific reactions that each pathogen has to land use changes should be further researched so proper mitigation steps can be taken. Once the effects of land use change …
