Metabolic dysfunction underlies several chronic diseases, many of which are exacerbated by obesity. Dietary interventions can reverse metabolic declines and slow aging, although compliance issues remain paramount. 17α-estradiol treatment improves metabolic parameters and slows aging in male mice. The mechanisms by which 17α-estradiol elicits these benefits remain unresolved. Herein, we show that 17α-estradiol elicits similar genomic binding and transcriptional activation through estrogen receptor α (ERα) to that of 17β-estradiol. In addition, we show that the ablation of ERα completely attenuates the beneficial metabolic effects of 17α-E2 in male mice. Our findings suggest that 17α-E2 may act through the liver and …

Faculty Research 2020
Myostatin (MSTN) is a transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) family member that normally acts to limit muscle growth. The function of MSTN is partially redundant with that of another TGF-β family member, activin A. MSTN and activin A are capable of signaling through a complex of type II and type I receptors. Here, we investigated the roles of two type II receptors (ACVR2 and ACVR2B) and two type I receptors (ALK4 and ALK5) in the regulation of muscle mass by these ligands by genetically targeting these receptors either alone or in combination specifically in myofibers in mice. We show that targeting …

Action in Education
A citywide arts initiative that works with underresourced communities will be able to widen its reach thanks to a generous new gift. The Stockyard Institute, described by its leaders as a “social practice project that uses relationships as the material,” was founded 25 years ago by Jim Duignan, an artist, associate professor, and founder and chair of the College of Education’s Visual Art Education program. The article discusses the work of the Stockyard Institute, its beneficiaries and its benefactors.

Amid the bleakness of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Illinois PPE Network is an inspiring grassroots success story. Comprising volunteer makers of personal protective equipment (PPE) across the Chicagoland area, the alliance was seeded at DePaul’s Idea Realization Lab (IRL) by its director, Jay Margalus, a School of Design instructor, who assembled a force of 3-D printers to create face shields for health care workers.

The Rationality Of Motherhood, Genevieve Kineke
The Rationality Of Motherhood, Genevieve Kineke
Theology Graduate Theses
Since both men and women, made in the divine image, bear rational souls, and the Catholic understanding of redemption requires that persons respond freely to the gift of grace, Saint Paul’s comment to Timothy that women can be saved through childbearing (cf. 1 Timothy 2:13-15) indicates that motherhood must be rational. This thesis responds to three different arguments against that premise—those of Simone deBeauvoir, Julia Kristeva, and Gertrude von le Fort—by illustrating that Thomas Aquinas’ application of Aristotelian principles restores both a proper understanding of rationality and how our hylemorphic construct directs us to our supernatural end. Weaving together a …

Residential And Industrial Energy Efficiency Improvement: A Dynamic General Equilibrium Analysis Of The Rebound Effect, Sondes Kahouli, Xavier Pautrel
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
The aim of this paper is to investigate bi-directional spillovers into residential and industrial sectors induced by energy efficiency improvement (EEI) in both the short- and long-term, and the impact of nesting structure as well as the size of elasticities of substitution of production and utility functions on the magnitude and the transitional dynamic of rebound effect. Developing a dynamic general equilibrium model, we demonstrate that residential EEIs spillovers into the industrial sector through the labor supply channel and industrial EEIs spill-overs into the residential sector through the conventional income channel. Numerical simulations calibrated on the U.S. suggest that not …
