The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is an international comparative study of student achievement directed by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA). TIMSS was first conducted in 1995 and the assessment conducted in 2019 formed the seventh cycle, providing 24 years of trends in mathematics and science achievement at Year 4 and Year 8. In Australia, TIMSS is managed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and is jointly funded by the Australian Government and the state and territory governments. The goal of TIMSS is to provide comparative information about educational achievement …
The Relationship Between Professional Nurse Certification And Nurse-Sensitive Patient Outcomes In The Acute Care Setting: An Integrative Literature Review, Julie Oss
Nursing Masters Papers
Healthcare organizations are charged with controlling rising costs, integrating services, and improving the quality of care. This Scholarly Inquiry Project has led to a closer look at the impact nurses have on patient care outcomes. Little research correlates specialty nurse certification with patient outcomes, even though certification is the hallmark of excellence in clinical nursing practice. Qualitative data validates that nurses who attain specialty certification report feeling more empowered, having additional innate worth, and more collaborative influence. Despite the robust subjective evidence, limited data exist to demonstrate the objective benefits of specialty certification on patient outcomes. The purpose of this …

The Impact Of Shigeru Miyamoto On The Game Design Industry, Luan Tran
ART 108: Introduction to Games Studies
Nintendo started as a small company in the 1970s that sold playing cards. Having seen the exemplary gift in his son, Miyamoto's father arranged for an interview with the president of Nintendo Hiroshi Yamauchi. Consequently, Miyamoto got a position in 1977 as an apprentice in the planning department after showing his toy creations to the president. He became the first Nintendo artist as he helped create the art for the first original coin-operated arcade game. The approach demonstrated his innate abilities that would help him become the ultimate guru in the industry. Through individual discovery, Miyamoto has managed to produce …

The Effect Of Closeness On Belief In Innocence, Kerri Kingsley
The Effect Of Closeness On Belief In Innocence, Kerri Kingsley
Honors Theses
Many people question how family and friends can stay loyal to convicted criminals or lie to throw off a police investigation; this study proposes that this belief in an accused criminal’s innocence has to do with how close a person is to the offender. Using the Unidimensional Relationship Closeness Scale (URCS) and a series of scenarios, this study compares how participants’ closeness to someone interacts with the participant’s belief in that person’s innocence when faced with a hypothetical criminal accusation. The study was administered as an online survey using the URCS and a series of questions about participants relationships to …

Equitable Defenses In Patent Law, Christa J. Laser
Equitable Defenses In Patent Law, Christa J. Laser
University of Miami Law Review
In patent law, “unenforceability” can have immense consequences. At least five equitable doctrines make up the defense of “unenforceability” as it was codified into the Patent Act in 1952: laches; estoppel; unclean hands; patent misuse; and according to some, inequitable conduct. Yet in the seventy years since incorporation of equitable defenses into the patent statute, the Supreme Court has not clarified their reach. Indeed, twice in the last four years, the Supreme Court avoided giving complete guidance on the crucial questions of whether, and when, such equitable defenses are available to bar damages in cases brought at law.

The Middle Ground: A Meaningful Balance Between The Benefits And Limitations Of Artificial Intelligence To Assist With The Justice Gap, Katherine L. W. Norton
The Middle Ground: A Meaningful Balance Between The Benefits And Limitations Of Artificial Intelligence To Assist With The Justice Gap, Katherine L. W. Norton
University of Miami Law Review
Access to justice continues to be an ongoing battle for those who cannot afford an attorney in civil legal matters. These civil legal matters touch issues that significantly impact daily life, from issues relating to health, such as advance directives, to family, such as custody of children. Lawyers, courts, and scholars have attempted to tackle this ongoing problem in our justice system. Some suggest that providing free counsel for all civil legal matters is the solution, while others suggest that self-help materials provide more immediate access to services and information. Regardless of the position one takes, the need is clear …

Of What Consequence?: Sexual Offender Laws And Federal Habeas Relief, Katherine A. Mitchell
University of Miami Law Review
New concerns for an old writ. The relatively recent advent of sex offender registries has led to consequences in the habeas corpus context—and they may be more than collateral. In particular, are the restraints imposed on registered sex offenders severe enough to constitute custody for habeas jurisdiction? With a recent split among the federal circuit courts, this Article attempts to decipher which side of the split the Supreme Court will—and should—fall.
Unvested: How Equity And The Deferred Payment Gamble In Startups Shortchange Employees Targeted By Discrimination, Katie Black
Unvested: How Equity And The Deferred Payment Gamble In Startups Shortchange Employees Targeted By Discrimination, Katie Black
University of Miami Law Review
The new American Dream is not limited to Silicon Valley. Startups span the nation. They exist in a vast array of sizes and ideologies. Nonetheless, by their very nature, startups are boundary-pushing enterprises. For all the world-altering good they can do, sometimes, that crashing-into-walls mentality comes at the price of pushing human and legal boundaries as well. While the entity tries to grow and create, almost hydraulically using what little human and financial capital it may have to build the once-impossible, startup employees can be left to bear the cost when it is their boundaries that are broken. Discrimination is …

Cnn Classification Architecture Study For Turbulent Free-Space And Attenuated Underwater Optical Oam Communications, Patrick L. Neary, Abbie T. Watnik, Kyle Peter Judd, James R. Lindle, Nicholas S. Flann
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
Turbulence and attenuation are signal degrading factors that can severely hinder free-space and underwater OAM optical pattern demultiplexing. A variety of state-of-the-art convolutional neural network architectures are explored to identify which, if any, provide optimal performance under these non-ideal environmental conditions. Hyperparameter searches are performed on the architectures to ensure that near-ideal settings are used for training. Architectures are compared in various scenarios and the best performing, with their settings, are provided. We show that from the current state-of-the-art architectures, DenseNet outperforms all others when memory is not a constraint. When memory footprint is a factor, ShuffleNet is shown to …

Novel Αvβ6 Inhibitor Reduces Fibrotic Progression In Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Murine Model, Rebecca C. Viazzo Winegar
Theses and Dissertations
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is one of the most aggressive and severe interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) for which there is no cure. IPF is characterized by an excessive accumulation of fibroblasts which secrete an abundance of extracellular proteins such as collagen. These processes lead to repetitive tissue scarring and fibrosis in the lung parenchyma. As a result, lungs become rigid limiting oxygen intake and gas exchange. Once diagnosed, IPF is fatal within 2-3 years. There is no known cause or proven treatment that significantly improves outcomes. Although the cause is unknown, the current model of IPF suggests that an overactive …

Love In A Bleak Climate: A Tale Of Desolation In The Deserts Of New Mexico, Remy Rogers, Han Dai-Yu
Honors Thesis
As an illustration major and English minor, my thesis melds the two mediums of the written word and visual imagery. One half of this thesis is a short story I’ve written about an old woman and her dog who become stranded in the deserts of New Mexico while on a camping trip following a coyote attack. Using the classic format of book illustrations, I chose 10 scenes from my story to interpret, decorate, and visually explain through the medium of traditional illustration: hand-drawn ink and watercolor drawings. A quote from each scene is included in the illustration itself. The purpose …
