Emerging Internet Technologies And The Regulation Of User Privacy, Phil Nyoni, Mthulisi Velempini, Nehemiah Mavetera
Emerging Internet Technologies And The Regulation Of User Privacy, Phil Nyoni, Mthulisi Velempini, Nehemiah Mavetera
The African Journal of Information Systems
Modern Internet-based technologies pose a threat to privacy, as they possess multiple sensors or features that collect data about users. There is a need to determine the privacy risks that affect users in South Africa as there are a few studies on the subject. A qualitative study was done which involved interviewing seven experts and a survey consisting of 101 respondents. The results show that regulators view emerging technologies as potentially risky and are motivated by public interest to develop protective laws. It therefore is necessary that regulators develop robust laws to help prevent privacy violations. Furthermore, this paper proposes …

Lapidation And Apology, Cass R. Sunstein
Lapidation And Apology, Cass R. Sunstein
University of Chicago Legal Forum
Groups of people, outraged by some real or imagined transgression, often respond in a way that is wildly disproportionate to the occasion, thus ruining the transgressor’s day, month, year, or life. To capture that phenomenon, we might repurpose an old word: lapidation. Technically, the word is a synonym for stoning, but it sounds much less violent. It is also obscure, which makes it easier to enlist for contemporary purposes. Lapidation plays a role in affirming, and helping to constitute, tribal identity. It typically occurs when a transgressor is taken to have violated a taboo, which helps account for the different …

Audio Status Adjustment Based On Lip Movements And Gaze Direction, N/A
Defensive Publications Series
Video conference (VC) user interfaces include a feature that provides users with the option to mute or unmute their audio status during a meeting. A user may forget to mute themselves when they are not speaking, causing background audio to be transmitted. A user may attempt to speak while unmuted, without realizing that they are muted. Such mode errors can interrupt the flow of the VC meeting. This disclosure utilizes one or more user-permitted factors, detected locally at a user device, to automatically adjust the user’s audio status within a video conference. If the user permits, data from the local …

Data Plane Signaled On-Demand Cloud Telemetry And Traffic Mirroring Configuration And Collection, Nagendra Kumar Nainar, Carlos Pignataro, Richard Furr
Defensive Publications Series
Cloud-based deployments are continually growing in popularity. In support of such paradigms, techniques are presented herein that leverage data plane intent signaling for packet and telemetry data collection and introduce a number of novel elements. For example, a first element is a cloud agent (e.g., running as a separate entity or as part of a router) that, among other things, interprets the data plane intent signaling for packet and telemetry collection and, upon detecting the intent signaling, instructs a local control plane agent about the intent and other details (such as, for example, flow, collection intent, timing, etc.) so that …
