Scale Development And Validation Of Anime Tourism Motivations, Shang Liu, Dan Lai, Songshan (Sam) Huang, Zhiyong Li
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Anime tourism has emerged as an important form of tourism resulted from both online and offline human activities and interactions. However, investigations into anime tourism motivations remain limited. Using Chinese anime tourists as study subjects and employing a mixed methods approach, this study develops a five-dimension anime tourism motivation scale with sufficient reliability and validity. The five motivational factors are anime authenticity seeking, novelty, escape/relaxation, socialisation, and anime cultural exploration. The results help understand unique anime tourist behaviours, expand the current knowledge of media-induced tourism, and extend contemporary cultural consumption literature. Based on the results, theoretical and managerial implications were …

BACKGROUND: Molecular subtype in invasive breast cancer guides systemic therapy. It is unknown whether molecular subtype should also be considered to tailor surgical therapy. The present investigation was designed to evaluate whether breast cancer subtype impacted surgical margins in patients with invasive breast cancer stage I through III undergoing breast-conserving therapy.
METHODS: Data from 2 randomized trials evaluating cavity shave margins (CSM) on margin status in patients undergoing partial mastectomy (PM) were used for this analysis. Patients were included if invasive carcinoma was present in the PM specimen and data for all 3 receptors (ER, PR, and HER2) were known. …

Using Advanced Technologies To Connect Communities Through Shared Experiences, Shauna Cross
Using Advanced Technologies To Connect Communities Through Shared Experiences, Shauna Cross
Theses
Lack of interactions within a shared community creates relationship barriers resulting in isolation, disconnected work teams, missed collaboration opportunities, and an overall shortage of peer connections. Community members feel connected when associations are built on perceived similarities, and the associated experiences have common features. Therefore, it is critical to understand how visually identifying and presenting associations advances opportunities to unite and remedy untapped success within a shared community.
Associations are often distinguished by similarity, contrast, and closeness. It is assumed similar stimuli evoke similar reactions, and therefore assumptions of association and connection are based on (or AKIN to) this. AKIN …

Temperature Profiles Inside And Outside Of An Insulated Packaging Container During The Fedex Ground Shipping Environment, Bingzhi Zeng
Theses
In the current pharmaceutical world, cold-chain shipment becomes one of the most important distribution methods. The most widely used cold-chain package is the insulation box that distributed by UPS or FedEx. This study used FedEx Ground Shipping method as the distribution carrier, to measure the temperature inside the insulation box and outside the box, also to estimate the ambient temperature and compare them to see the temperature changing trends; also, to compare the internal temperature and external temperature to see if there is any equilibrium temperature reached during the shipment, and if there is any delay of temperature change. There …

Reinforcement Learning Approach For Inspect/Correct Tasks, Hoda Nasereddin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this research, we focus on the application of reinforcement learning (RL) in automated agent tasks involving considerable target variability (i.e., characterized by stochastic distributions); in particular, learning of inspect/correct tasks. Examples include automated identification & correction of rivet failures in airplane maintenance procedures, and automated cleaning of surgical instruments in a hospital sterilization processing department. The location of defects and the corrective action to be taken for each varies from task episode. What needs to be learned are optimal stochastic strategies rather than optimization of any one single defect type and location. RL has been widely applied in robotics …

From Forests To Fish: Mercury In Mountain Lake Food Webs Influenced By Factors At Multiple Scales, Ariana M. Chiapella, Collin A. Eagles-Smith, Angela L. Strecker
Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Mountain lakes, while seemingly pristine, have been subjected to historical fish stocking practices and exposure to atmospherically deposited contaminants like mercury. Mercury bioaccumulation in these ecosystems varies widely due to strong environmental gradients, and there are complex, hierarchical factors that affect mercury transport and loading, methylmercury production, and food web biomagnification. We sought to assess how representative variables associated with watershed, lake, and food web-scale processes—specifically, catchment tree cover, lake benthic primary production, and fish diet, respectively—are associated with mercury concentrations in mountain lake fish. Mean fish mercury concentrations varied threefold between lakes, with nearshore tree cover and fish diet …

People from across the Caylloma Province of Peru are adapting to social-ecological changes, such as decreasing water supplies and rapidly retreating glaciers, in different and unequal ways. In this study, we show how this inequality is intersectional; identities like gender and age compound and interact with systems of power to shape how people adapt to these changes at the individual, household, and district scales. We draw from 130 semi-structured interviews with agricultural actors and participant observations in district and regional meetings across four districts, to demonstrate how intersectionality shapes adaptation to social-ecological change. Our results show (1) what social-ecological changes …

Assessing The Unethical Phenomenon Behind Hollywood’S Handshake Agreements, Daniel Rico
Assessing The Unethical Phenomenon Behind Hollywood’S Handshake Agreements, Daniel Rico
University of Miami Business Law Review
The Hollywood Film Industry has maintained a unique characteristic of allowing substantial capital investments to regularly proceed on the basis of oral (“handshake”) agreements.1 These handshake agreements result in an uncertain threat of legal enforcement and an increased exposure to contract liability. Nevertheless, handshake contracts have become so prevalent in Hollywood’s entertainment industry that no matter one’s opinion on the merits of using these contracts, attorneys have conformed to this longstanding tradition in order to stay competitive.
As a result, this longstanding practice of conducting business through handshake agreements has contributed to another time-honored Hollywood tradition: contract disputes. Hollywood’s flexible …

Data has become critical to drive decisions, manage devices, support engineering teams, support service
support teams, and many other uses on data driven organizations.
Data is coming from multiple sources, collected and stored in multiple systems and not easy to share
avoiding duplications and inefficiencies; assuring data quality and consistency.
Current approaches are creating data layers which internally are managing copies of the data for
operational purposes.
Due to the amount of data systems available it is also difficult to be aware of the existence of this data or
difficulties to share it so usually it ends with teams creating …

This disclosure describes techniques to measure authority content gap (ACG), which represents the (lack of) authoritativeness in online content related to individual topics. The ACG metric is defined for various verticals, e.g., health, government services, legal, etc., and can be specific to region, country, language, or time period. The ACG is refreshed periodically, and it can be used in combination with other metrics relating to a content publisher. The ACG is a useful measure in various contexts, e.g., when an unpopular or obscure topic achieves sudden popularity, or when a new topic emerges. The ACG for a topic can indicate …
