Profiling Genome-Wide Dna Methylation Patterns In Human Aortic And Mitral Valves, Sarah Halawa
Profiling Genome-Wide Dna Methylation Patterns In Human Aortic And Mitral Valves, Sarah Halawa
Theses and Dissertations
Cardiac valve structure and function are complex and include dynamic interactions between cells, extracellular matrix (ECM) and their hemodynamic environment. Valvular gene expression is tightly regulated by a variety of mechanisms including epigenetic factors such as histone modifications, RNA-based mechanisms and DNA methylation. To date, methylation fingerprints of non-diseased human aortic and mitral valves have not been studied. In this work I analyzed the differential methylation profiles of 12 non-diseased aortic and mitral valve tissue samples (in matched pairs). Methylation data were acquired via reduced representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS). Of 1601 promoters analyzed genome-wide, my analysis revealed 584 differentially methylated …
Structures And Characteristics Of Macromolecular Interactions In Gas Phase Using Fourier-Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry, Jiewen Shen
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigates non-covalent macromolecular chemistry using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS) based techniques. The included studies reveal the impact of molecular structure on conformation and binding energetics. Supramolecules that might be too heavy to be dissociated in single collision-induced dissociation (CID) were dissociated using sustained off-resonance collision induced dissociation (SORI-CID) techniques. Relative binding energies and thresholds were evaluated for various macromolecular host-guest systems. Besides the non-covalent binding energies, conformation characterization was undertaken by a novel method to determine collision cross sectional areas using FTICR (CRAFTI, and multi-CRAFTI), initially developed by the Dearden lab. The systems chosen …

Purification And Use Of Trna For Enzymatic Post-Translational Addition Of Amino Acids To Proteins., Irem Avcilar-Kucukgoze, Howard Gamper, Ya-Ming Hou, Anna Kashina
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers
Post-translational addition of amino acids to proteins by enzymes using aminoacyl-tRNA is an emerging regulatory mechanism. Examples include Arg transfer in eukaryotes, Leu/Phe transfer in bacteria, and tRNA-synthetase-mediated addition of amino acids to Lys side chains. Here, we present a method of purification and use of tRNA for such reactions, focusing on tRNAArg and its use for arginylation. This method can also be used for other tRNA-mediated reactions. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Avcilar-Kucukgoze et al. (2020).

The Usage Of Human Resources Management Information System (Hrmis) In The Malaysian Armed Forces: Empirical Evidence In A Military Setting, Mohd Azmi Arifin
The Usage Of Human Resources Management Information System (Hrmis) In The Malaysian Armed Forces: Empirical Evidence In A Military Setting, Mohd Azmi Arifin
Student Works (2020-2029)
The use of information and communication technology (ICT) among individuals and organisations is growing in accordance with technology invention, innovation and consumer needs. Like other organisations, the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) are not left behind to adopt technology in its management and operations. In the individual context, the use of technology can enhance the performance and quality of MAF’s personnel work. However, the BADSA’s report in 2017 found that the use of HRMIS was not optimal in the MAF. Only 32.4 per cent of the 37 units that were audited had used the system. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate …
Environmental Variability In West Lake Mangroves: A Climatology Report, Gretchen M. Spencer
Environmental Variability In West Lake Mangroves: A Climatology Report, Gretchen M. Spencer
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Sea level rise, ocean acidification, increasing sea temperatures, and deoxygenation are all consequences of climate change that are impacting the ocean. However, nearshore environments are being affected by climate change at varying rates compared to the open ocean. Mangroves, environments which already see wide variety in their daily environmental conditions due to the natural physical and biogeochemical processes which occur in them, are habitats that are expected to change at a faster rate than other ecosystems. The goal of this study was to create a baseline understanding of the daily, monthly, and seasonal changes occurring in a local mangrove habitat, …
A Rapid Spectrophotometric Assay For Quantifying Seed Coat Saponins In Quinoa, Sydney Diver Szabo
A Rapid Spectrophotometric Assay For Quantifying Seed Coat Saponins In Quinoa, Sydney Diver Szabo
Theses and Dissertations
Background and objectives: The commonly used afrosimetric foam-height method for quantifying saponins in quinoa is rapid but imprecise. A rapid UV/Vis method, utilizing the Liebermann-Burchard (LB) color reaction, was compared to the foam method across a range of saponin levels in washed and unwashed seed. Findings: A 6 min UV/Vis method provided greater precision and accuracy than the afrosimetric method at the lower saponin levels found in washed quinoa. The afrosimetric method did not differentiate saponin levels below 0.6 mg/mL but allows for useful relative comparisons of saponin content in unwashed quinoa where the foam height is large. Conclusions: The …
Characterizations Of Bimetallic Silver-Copper Nanoparticles, Omar Lezcano
Characterizations Of Bimetallic Silver-Copper Nanoparticles, Omar Lezcano
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The goal of this study was to characterize alloy nanoparticles with different bimetallic ratios of silver (Ag) and copper (Cu) by determining the composition and alloy structures. One specific objective was to determine how the composition affects the electrical properties of the nanoparticles in terms of electrical resistance and nanoparticle sintering. The desire for this study stems from the need to make conductive pastes for low-cost solar panel manufacturing. We performed experiments to develop the aqueous synthesis of core-shell bimetallic nanoparticles.
We investigated the room temperature sintering properties with the nanoparticles of varying compositions. The nanoparticles were characterized with several …

The Phenomenology Of Revisiting Lived Experience Through Photographic Images: Memory Formation, Narrative Construction And Self-Empowerment, Constantinos D. Nikiforos, Chryssoula Karakitsou
The Qualitative Report
This study examines the way photographs can trigger memories, help us revisit lived experiences and re-evaluate the past. Specifically, it explores how fragments of past experience survive in somebody’s internal world, what actually happens during recollection and how photographs shape someone’s narrative and their construction of meaning about life. The dynamics of memory formation in psychoanalytic theory, schema theory and cognitive neuroscience is discussed, alongside its impact on subjectivity during retrieval and reconstruction. Additionally, the study draws upon the main theories on photographic images and on studies using visual data, which provide a more pluralistic perspective that entails both a …

Damsel In Distress Or Princess In Power? Traditional Masculinity And Femininity In Young Adult Novelizations Of Cinderella And The Effects On Agency, Rylee Carling
Theses and Dissertations
Retellings of classic fairy tales have become increasingly popular in the past decade, but little research has been done on the novelizations written for a young adult (YA) audience. Critical multicultural analysis determining the effect of race, gender, disability, and more has been completed for both original fairy tale retellings and fairy tale retellings for children, but scholars have neglected popular YA novelizations. This study aims to determine how traditional masculinity and femininity affect agency in both male and female characters in YA novelizations of Cinderella. To examine the role of traditional masculinity and femininity in young adult novelizations of …
Translating Greek Mythology In Contemporary Chinese Science Fiction, Emily Olive Moore
Translating Greek Mythology In Contemporary Chinese Science Fiction, Emily Olive Moore
Theses and Dissertations
Given its early connection to western science fiction, it is not entirely surprising that contemporary Chinese science fiction (csf) frequently references the "west" in general and Greek mythology in particular. The three works that I analyze in this paper are Xia Jia's "Psychology Game," Gu Shi's "Chimera," and Egoyan Zheng's The Dream Devourer. These three texts utilize Greek mythology in different ways, to different degrees, and with different purposes, and yet they all use Greek mythology to visually disrupt their respective texts. Xia Jia ends "Psychology Game" with a direct Greek-language quotation. Throughout "Chimera," Gu Shi quotes Chinese translations of …

Charter School Autonomy In An Era Of Standards-Based Reforms, Karen M. Phillips
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
This study examined the impact of standards-based prescribed reforms on the capacity of charter schools to maintain autonomy needed for innovation and to meet school-specific goals and missions. Charter schools are constructed on the concept of autonomy and innovation while standards-based reform initiatives are based on concepts of prescriptive accountability and standardization.
Utilizing qualitative research case study methodology, I selected three case study charter schools located in northern New Mexico and conducted semi-structured interviews with leaders and teachers from the schools in addition to reviewing document artifacts. I developed a conceptual framework of three interconnected elements of autonomy – Regulation, …
Examining Psychotherapeutic Treatment Approach Preference In A Hispanic Population, Andrea Mayra Vieira Debarros
Examining Psychotherapeutic Treatment Approach Preference In A Hispanic Population, Andrea Mayra Vieira Debarros
Theses and Dissertations
Minority groups are at a disadvantage when seeking psychological treatment. Interventions are often less effective for minority populations when treatment outcomes are compared to Anglo populations. Studies indicate that the stigma associated with mental health disorders and seeking psychological intervention within these minority subgroups may be at fault for this disparity. In this study, we explored this idea by examining what methods of intervention Hispanic-identified individuals are more likely to seek out. Participants were given the option to enlist in a biofeedback approach to intervention as well as a supportive talk psychotherapy. Participants were drawn from the community population in …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Extractive activities in the ocean are expanding into the vast, poorly studied deep sea, with the consequence that environmental management decisions must be made for data-poor seafloor regions. Habitat classification can support marine spatial planning and inform decision-making processes in such areas. We present a regional, top–down, broad-scale, seafloor-habitat classification for the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCZ), an area targeted for future polymetallic nodule mining in abyssal waters in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. Our classification uses non-hierarchical, k-medoids clustering to combine environmental correlates of faunal distributions in the region. The classification uses topographic variables, particulate organic carbon flux to the seafloor, …

Volcanic Co2 Seep Geochemistry And Use In Understanding Ocean Acidification, A. Aiuppa, J. M. Hall-Spencer, M. Milazzo, G. Turco, S. Caliro, Napoli R Di
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
AbstractOcean acidification is one of the most dramatic effects of the massive atmospheric release of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) that has occurred since the Industrial Revolution, although its effects on marine ecosystems are not well understood. Submarine volcanic hydrothermal fields have geochemical conditions that provide opportunities to characterise the effects of elevated levels of seawater CO2 on marine life in the field. Here, we review the geochemical aspects of shallow marine CO2-rich seeps worldwide, focusing on both gas composition and water chemistry. We then describe the geochemical effects of volcanic CO2 seepage on the overlying seawater column. We also present …

Epidemiological studies indicate that elevated alkaline phosphatase activity is associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk. Other epidemiological data demonstrate that mothers giving multiple childbirths (multipara) are also at increased risk of developing late-onset cardiovascular disease. We hypothesized that these two associations stem from a common cause, the insufficient plasma level of the ectopic mineralization inhibitor inorganic pyrophosphate, which is a substrate of alkaline phosphatase. As alkaline phosphatase activity is elevated in pregnancy, we hypothesized that pyrophosphate concentrations decrease gestationally, potentially leading to increased maternal vascular calcification and cardiovascular disease risk in multipara. We investigated plasma pyrophosphate kinetics pre- and postpartum …

Proposed Scheme For Characterization Of Power Quality Disturbances., Akram Ibrahim El-Mitwally, A. Abdelmageid, S. Fathy
Mansoura Engineering Journal
A voluminous amount of disturbance waveforms are captured and recorded by power quality survey projects. These disturbances need to be automatically classified and characterized to provide informative and useful results about the power quality condition of the system. Intensive research is conducted to accomplish efficient automatic classification tools. There is still a notable scarcity in apt techniques for characterization or quantification of disturbances. In this paper, a scheme based on discrete wavelet transform and neural networks is proposed to characterize the recorded power quality disturbances. A routine is presented to compute the disturbance duration. A dedicated neural network is used …

Finding A Wells Way: Using Sustainability Metrics To Determine Best Practices For Relocating Wells Barns, Sara P. Hall
Finding A Wells Way: Using Sustainability Metrics To Determine Best Practices For Relocating Wells Barns, Sara P. Hall
Theses
Serving as a visual representation of a different time and place, barns and agricultural architecture across America have both historical and cultural values that are imitable. Evoking a strong sense of nostalgia and simplicity, barns are an often-overlooked architectural typology worth preserving. Native to Western New York, historical Wells style barns have served as an iconic agricultural symbol since the late 1800s. As the means and methods of agriculture change with technological development, more and more of these exemplary structures are becoming neglected and obsolete. Typically located in remote, rural areas, this thesis looks to determine alternate, sustainable options in …
