Nitrogen Uptake By Two Plants In Response To Plant Competition As Regulated By Neighbor Density, Xuan Jia, Chaohe Huangfu, Dafeng Hui Dec 2020

Nitrogen Uptake By Two Plants In Response To Plant Competition As Regulated By Neighbor Density, Xuan Jia, Chaohe Huangfu, Dafeng Hui

Biology Faculty Research

Plant species may acquire different forms of nitrogen (N) to reduce competition for the same resource, but how plants respond to neighbors with different densities in their N uptake is still poorly understood. We investigated the effects of competition regime on the uptake of different N forms by two hygrophytes, Carex thunbergii and Polygonum criopolitanum, by conducting a hydroponic test of excised roots and an in situ experiment in a subtropical wetland ecosystem. The two species were grown either in monocultures or mixtures with various neighbor densities. Root functional traits and N uptake rates of different N forms were measured. …

Effects Of Wollastonia Biflora Expansion On The Soil Seed Bank In Native Forest Communities On A Tropical Coral Island, Yao Huang, Hai Ren, Jun Wang, Nan Liu, Shuguang Jian, Hongyue Cai, Dafeng Hui, Qinfeng Guo Dec 2020

Effects Of Wollastonia Biflora Expansion On The Soil Seed Bank In Native Forest Communities On A Tropical Coral Island, Yao Huang, Hai Ren, Jun Wang, Nan Liu, Shuguang Jian, Hongyue Cai, Dafeng Hui, Qinfeng Guo

Biology Faculty Research

Invasive plants and native weeds (i.e., undesirable plant species) often have negative effects on native ecosystems. However, the effects of weed expansion on soil seed banks and seedling emergence in native forests have not been well investigated. In this study, we used a seedling emergence assay to assess the effects of expansion by a native weed, the perennial C4 herb Wollastonia biflora, on the soil seed bank and above-ground vegetation in forests on Yongxing Island, a coral island in the South China Sea. We found that W. biflora expansion was associated with a reduced abundance of native species in the …

Lsomp: Large Scale Ordinance Mining Portal, Xu Du, Matthew Kowalski, Aparna S. Varde, Boxiang Dong

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We propose a novel scalable Web portal called LSOMP (Large Scale Ordinance Mining Portal) to analyze ordinances and their tweets (of the order of thousands and millions). It entails commonsense knowledge (CSK) and natural language processing (NLP), disseminating ordinance-tweet mining results via interactive graphics and Question Answering (QA).

New Image Classification Framework For Improving Image Retrieval Based On Relevance Feedback., M. Elalami Dec 2020

New Image Classification Framework For Improving Image Retrieval Based On Relevance Feedback., M. Elalami

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) is a promising technology to assist image finding, CBIR retrieves images by visual features inherent in images. Relevance feedback allows the user to reflect his preference to the system, then the system can reformulate the query according to the positive and/or negative examples responded by the user. This paper presents two efficient frameworks for image classification through the analysis of the visual features (such as color, shape, texture) of an example image. The first framework is based on comparing the norm and the direction of vectors ia multi-dimensional space for both the target and query image …

What Experiences Influence Individuals To Become An English Teacher?, Amanda Horning Dec 2020

What Experiences Influence Individuals To Become An English Teacher?, Amanda Horning

Fall Student Research Symposium 2020

How do past literacy experiences influence an individual to choose an English teaching major? There is a teacher shortage across the nation that shows that not many individuals choose to become teachers. People's career choices are often influenced by experiences and this study is to find out what experiences influence those few individuals to choose the pathway to becoming an educator, specifically in English. English teaching students at Utah State University were asked to participate in a survey inquiring about their past literacy experiences in order to find which ones had the most impact on their decision to become an …

From A Non-Consensual Incestuous Relationship To A Promotion To Priestess: The Way That A Father Controls Their Daughter Determines The Status Level That A Woman Can Hold In Apollonius Of Tyre, Sarah Haggerty Dec 2020

From A Non-Consensual Incestuous Relationship To A Promotion To Priestess: The Way That A Father Controls Their Daughter Determines The Status Level That A Woman Can Hold In Apollonius Of Tyre, Sarah Haggerty

Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Showcase

Is a woman only considered a woman when she is owned by a man? How does the relationship between father and daughter shape the way a woman is seen or treated in medieval society? This project examines the Old English version of Apollonius of Tyre, a rare example of secular 11th century prose, as translated by Benjamin Thorpe. Apollonius of Tyre deals with three different familial relationships and the various ways that the fathers as both leaders of the house, and royal officials treat their daughters as property that they own. From one daughter having basic freedoms such as being …

Equity, Engagement, And Health: School Organisational Issues And Priorities During Covid-19, Jose Eos R. Trinidad Dec 2020

Equity, Engagement, And Health: School Organisational Issues And Priorities During Covid-19, Jose Eos R. Trinidad

Interdisciplinary Studies Faculty Publications

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has disrupted and posed great challenges for kindergarten-grade12 education systems. Initial studies on education and COVID-19 often focus on technology use, student learning, and school reopening plans. However, debates on the form of instruction become futile when stakeholders are unclear about what the competing values, issues, and priorities are. Using exploratory data analysis of a representative sample of US teachers and school leaders, this paper highlights key organisational issues and priorities in terms of addressing academic achievement gaps, students’ online engagement, and teachers’ and students’ health. More fundamentally, deeper issues are uncovered like equity for …

Lady Problems: A Study On The Effect Of Perceived Femininity When Evaluating Female Presidential Candidates, Mackenzie O. Marquess Dec 2020

Lady Problems: A Study On The Effect Of Perceived Femininity When Evaluating Female Presidential Candidates, Mackenzie O. Marquess

Communication Theses

There is currently an observable gender gap associated with political leadership. Though many have tried, no woman has successfully campaigned for the presidency. Historically, media coverage of female candidates is vastly different from coverage of their male counterparts and it is well established that the media has significant control over public perception of candidates. This study examines media coverage of female candidates in an attempt to understand the rhetoric that consistently positions women as unelectable regardless of their experience or political prowess. This study analyzes post-debate commentary from the first Democratic presidential debate of the 2020 election beginning on June …

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The pressing focus on sustainability and the importance of climate action impels this project to examine whether and how gender and gender socialization shape perceptions of these issues. Investigating The Effect Of Urea Pretreatment On Bloodstain Detection, Kevin Mckenna Dec 2020

Investigating The Effect Of Urea Pretreatment On Bloodstain Detection, Kevin Mckenna

Honors Theses

Throughout the years, many chemical enhancement methods for bloodstain detection have been developed. One of these chemicals is luminol. Blood detection using luminol and its derivatives, like Bluestar™, have been commonly used at many crime scenes. The pre-treatment of 8M urea on bloodstains was proposed in order to increase the intensity of chemiluminescence of the reaction, and to eliminate false positive reactions that can occur. This study takes a look at bloodstains that are placed on two types of surfaces, at varying dilutions, and analyzed after different amounts of time. These bloodstains were analyzed to see how strong of a …
