Retention Of Rising Oil Droplets In Density Stratification, Tracy L. Mandel, De Zhen Zhou, Lindsay Waldrop, Maxime Theillard, Dustin Kleckner, Shilpa Khatri
Retention Of Rising Oil Droplets In Density Stratification, Tracy L. Mandel, De Zhen Zhou, Lindsay Waldrop, Maxime Theillard, Dustin Kleckner, Shilpa Khatri
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
In this study, we present results from experiments on the retention of single oil droplets rising through a two-layer density stratification, with the goal of quantifying and parametrizing the impact of stratification on timescales that describe the delay in rising. These experiments confirm the significant slowdown observed in past literature of settling and rising particles and droplets in stratification, and these are the first experiments to study single liquid droplets as opposed to solid particles or bubbles. By tracking the motion of the droplets as they rise through a stratified fluid, we identify two new timescales which quantitatively describe this …

Minority children and children living in under-resourced households are at the greatest risk for obesity and diet-related disparities. Identifying effective strategies to reduce these risks is an important step in child obesity prevention. Parents influence the home environment and play a critical role in child obesity prevention. Eighteen parent–child dyads living in under-resourced Houston area communities participated in a mixed methods study (online surveys, telephone interviews). The purpose of the research reported here was to conduct a secondary analysis of the qualitative data to explore Black/African American and Hispanic parent and child perspectives of the ways in which parents could …

Space radiation inhibits angiogenesis by two mechanisms depending on the linear energy transfer (LET). Using human 3D micro-vessel models, blockage of the early motile stage of angiogenesis was determined to occur after exposure to low LET ions (/AMU), whereas inhibition of the later stages occurs after exposure to high LET ions (>8 KeV/AMU). Strikingly, the combined effect is synergistic, detectible as low as 0.06 Gy making mixed ion space radiation more potent. Candidates for bystander transmission are microRNAs (miRNAs), and analysis on miRNA-seq data from irradiated mice shows that angiogenesis would in theory be downregulated. Further analysis of three …

Spaceflight missions can cause immune system dysfunction in astronauts with little understanding of immune outcomes in deep space. This study assessed immune responses in mice following ground-based, simulated deep spaceflight conditions, compared with data from astronauts on International Space Station missions. For ground studies, we simulated microgravity using the hindlimb unloaded mouse model alone or in combination with acute simulated galactic cosmic rays or solar particle events irradiation. Immune profiling results revealed unique immune diversity following each experimental condition, suggesting each stressor results in distinct circulating immune responses, with clear consequences for deep spaceflight. Circulating plasma microRNA sequence analysis revealed …

Influence And Innovation: Beethoven's Impact On The Sonatas For Piano And Cello By Mendelssohn And Chopin, Patrick T. Bellah
Influence And Innovation: Beethoven's Impact On The Sonatas For Piano And Cello By Mendelssohn And Chopin, Patrick T. Bellah
Dissertations, 2020-current
The bulk of the scholarship in this paper centers around Beethoven’s five sonatas written for piano and cello and how he established a new normal within the genre. This is evidenced by what are arguably the two most noteworthy sonatas for the same instrumental medium, written by Mendelssohn and Chopin, following Beethoven’s death. I posit that the five sonatas written by Beethoven establish a series of models upon which the latter two works by his successors are based.
Chapters two and three of this document are separated into subsections that detail the plausibility of Beethoven’s influence through circumstantial evidence, musical …
Making Work-Life Policies And Perceptions Public: An Examination Of Corporate Websites And Employee Ratings Of Work-Life Balance, Alyse S. Lehrke
Making Work-Life Policies And Perceptions Public: An Examination Of Corporate Websites And Employee Ratings Of Work-Life Balance, Alyse S. Lehrke
Dissertations, 2020-current
Organizational leaders in high-performing companies strive to implement work-life policies and practices that contribute to the company’s competitive advantage in meaningful ways. In the United States, leaders often cite business case justifications for work-life benefits by tracing benefits to profit and loss in the form of higher retention, lower absenteeism, and greater productivity, for example. However, a corporate social responsibility case adds to the business case for work-life benefits by recognizing the potential to enhance the company’s reputation by demonstrating ethical business practices to public audiences. This study builds on both a business case and social responsibility case to examine …
Determining Faculty Capacity For Transdisciplinary Instruction, Dominic Swayne
Determining Faculty Capacity For Transdisciplinary Instruction, Dominic Swayne
Dissertations, 2020-current
The purpose of this study was to develop a reliable and valid survey instrument that would prove useful in identifying faculty with the capacity and inclination to succeed in team-taught, hands-on, transdisciplinary course programming. Using an exploratory, mixed-methods design, the qualitative component consisted of semi-structured interviews of nine experienced X-Labs faculty. The qualitative analysis process identified attributes that were vital to transdisciplinary teaching and demonstrated patterns that were consistent with complex leadership development. During the mixing process, these data were translated into a quantitative instrument. A panel of experts reviewed the prototype instrument and reduced the number of items included …
Posttraumatic Growth During Covid-19: A Quantitative Analysis Of Individualist And Collectivist Values, Stephanie Chalk
Posttraumatic Growth During Covid-19: A Quantitative Analysis Of Individualist And Collectivist Values, Stephanie Chalk
Dissertations, 2020-current
The 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic has spurred a major global crisis. Collective trauma is inevitable. Compared to posttraumatic stress, relatively little research has been conducted on posttraumatic growth. This study examined the associations between individualism-collectivism, coping behaviors, and posttraumatic growth in the context of COVID-19. A total of 314 adult participants were recruited to complete a questionnaire on COVID-19 experiences, individualism-collectivism, coping, and posttraumatic growth. Posttraumatic growth was measured globally and across five factors: relating to others, personal strength, new possibilities, appreciation of life, and spirituality. A t-test found no difference in global posttraumatic growth in participants who were …
The Examination Of Morpho-Syntactic Production In Bahamian Children Exposed To Bahamian Creole English And English, Danielle Moss
The Examination Of Morpho-Syntactic Production In Bahamian Children Exposed To Bahamian Creole English And English, Danielle Moss
Dissertations, 2020-current
Purpose. Information on the morpho-syntax development of children who speak varieties of Bahamian English, such as Bahamian Creole English (BCE), remains understudied. Therefore, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) assessing the expressive language of children who speak BCE encounter challenges in making clinical judgments of language difference, developmental errors, and language disorder because they are unable to judge the morpho-syntactic features of this creole to the rules of another variety of Bahamian English, standard English (SE1), as both varieties, BCE and SE, are independently rule-governed. This dissertation study investigated the morpho-syntax of typically developing four and six-year-old Bahamian children who speak …

Long-Acting Nanoformulated Antivirals For The Treatment And Prevention Of Hiv-1 And Hbv Infections, Dhruvkumar M. Soni Dr.
Theses & Dissertations
While antiretroviral therapy (ART) has revolutionized treatment and prevention of human immunodeficiency virus type one (HIV-1) infection, regimen adherence, viral mutations, drug toxicities, stigma and pill fatigue are limitations. These have led to the development of long acting (LA) ART. These include, but are not limited to, implantable devices, new chemical entities, prodrug modifications and nanoformulations. To these ends, this thesis focues on the transformation of nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) into LA parenterals, While elusive, data from our laboratories demonstrated that modifications to the PROdrug and nucleoTide technology (ProTide) enables improvements in drug apparent half-life and tissue and cell …

Competition Enforcement Models In The Western Balkans Countries – The Rule Of Law Still Terra Incognita?, Dijana Marković-Bajalović
Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies
The administrative model of competition law enforcement is the prevailing model in the EU Member States. Although Member States are free to choose between the administrative and the judicial model or their combination, many of them opted for the administrative model taking the EU model as an example. The same is valid for the candidate and potential candidate states of Western Balkans. The new Directive 2019/1 deals with the issue of safeguarding the fundamental rights in competition proceedings in general terms only, while stabilisation and association agreements lay down the rule of law as a fundamental principle, but do not …

Competition Law Framework In Kosovo And The Role Of The Eu In Promoting Competition Policies In Other Countries And Regions Wishing To Join The Block, Avdylkader Mucaj
Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies
The aim of this article is, on the one hand, to provide an overview of the competition law framework in Kosovo vis-á-vis the establishment of the Kosovo Competition Authority (hereinafter; the Authority), its institutional design as well as the criteria for becoming a member of the Commission within the Authority, which is the most important decision-making body in the field of competition law in Kosovo. On the other hand, it discusses some of the challenges the Authority as well as the courts are facing as regards the effective enforcement of competition law provisions in Kosovo, be it procedural or substantive. …
Proper, Transparent And Just Prioritization Policy As A Challenge For National Competition Authorities And Prioritization Of The Slovak Nca, Ondrej Blažo
Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies
The paper tries to establish some limits of the framework for prioritization policy in order to show that the NCAs are still bound by certain principles for setting their prioritization policies and are not completely independent or autonomous. In this context, priority setting by the Slovak NCA, surveillance of this process and evaluation of its credibility is analysed. The power to prioritize cases became a part of the ‘independence toolkit’ of the ECN+ Directive and is linked to effective use of limited resources. Despite including prioritization into the elements of independence of NCAs, the ECN+ Directive gives no further requirements …
Putting Dawn Raids Under Control, Jorge G. Contreras Condezo, Annabel Kingma, Miroslava Scholten
Putting Dawn Raids Under Control, Jorge G. Contreras Condezo, Annabel Kingma, Miroslava Scholten
Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies
Dawn raids have become an effective tool to enforce EU and national competition laws. Judicial review is an essential mechanism of control over the executive branch against possible misuse of this power. However, this judicial review has shown to have limits; it cannot always guarantee an adequate redress for the affected parties. How to address the limited judicial review to ensure control over dawn raids? This article argues that the limits of judicial review could be addressed by extending the types of controls over this action, i.e. ex ante legislative guidance and internal managerial accountability. The more conceptual argument that …
Particularities Of Proving A Single And Continuous Infringement Of Eu Competition Rules, Mirna Romić Romić
Particularities Of Proving A Single And Continuous Infringement Of Eu Competition Rules, Mirna Romić Romić
Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies
A single and continuous infringement of EU competition rules is a qualified form of infringement of EU Competition Law characterized by the existence of a global plan having a single objective between undertakings. Given the specificity of this form of infringement, proving it is somewhat different from the standard evidentiary process for proving infringements of competition rules before EU courts. This article aims to give an overview of the evidentiary rules through the case law of the Court of Justice of the EU and analyze their application in practice.
State-Controlled Entities In The Eu Merger Control: The Case Of Pkn Orlen And Lotos Group, Alexandr Svetlicinii
State-Controlled Entities In The Eu Merger Control: The Case Of Pkn Orlen And Lotos Group, Alexandr Svetlicinii
Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies
The economic downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemics is expected to result in the increased participation of the state in the functioning of markets. One of the forms of this participation is the recapitalization and state shareholding in commercial enterprises, which could lead to anti-competitive effects to the detriment of competitors and consumers. In this regard, the effective enforcement of merger control rules at the EU and national levels gains in importance. The present paper questions the adequacy of the available merger control standards and assessment tools for taking into account potential anti-competitive effects stemming from ownership and non-ownership forms …
Gun Jumping In Selected See Countries – An Obvious Risk In M&A Transactions, Marija Zrno Prošić, Raško Radovanović, Robert Kordić
Gun Jumping In Selected See Countries – An Obvious Risk In M&A Transactions, Marija Zrno Prošić, Raško Radovanović, Robert Kordić
Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies
Gun jumping is a term which describes the premature realization of a merger before obtaining a merger clearance from the relevant competition authorities. In the last years, the European Commission and national competition authorities have demonstrated an increased interest in investigating and punishing gun jumping cases. Recognizing this interest and the need for practical guidance, the article first gives an overview of gun-jumping evolution through case law. It then points to different merger filing thresholds in the region, and implications they could have for gun-jumping issues, to show that despite the commercial and historical common ground in the region, merger …
Abuse Of Dominance In The Electronic Communications Markets: Overview Of Croatian Efforts With A Report On Recent Developments, Mislav Bradvica, Kristina Rudec
Abuse Of Dominance In The Electronic Communications Markets: Overview Of Croatian Efforts With A Report On Recent Developments, Mislav Bradvica, Kristina Rudec
Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies
On 6 November 2019, the Croatian Competition Agency brought one of its latest decisions concerning dominance abuse on Croatian electronic communication market. When asked to assess the behaviour of the dominant incumbent, Agency had to deal not only with incumbent’s position in the electronic communications markets, but also with spillover of its power to electronic media market. In its ruling, the Agency concluded that exclusivity licencing terms regarding premium football content do not qualify as the abuse of dominant position. While the decision in itself might represent only an interesting read, if considered in the context of Agency’s previous practice, …
The Escalators’ Series. Season: Private Enforcement. Episode: About The One That Was Not An Undertaking On The Relevant Market. Case Comment To Judgment Of The Court Of Justice Of 12 December 2019, Case C-435/18, Kamil Dobosz
Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies
This case-note offers comments to the judgement of the Court of Justice in another escalators’ case and its potential implications. Given that the preliminary questions rather entail obvious response, the ruling goes beyond expectations. Its reasoning is not based on the necessity to cope with specific national obstacles that was predominantly utilized in face of private enforcement cases. Instead the Court of Justice held that genuinely Article 101 TFEU implies that, probably, any injured party will be entitled to act as a claimant in damages litigation. No room for national legal specificities was left then. Furthermore, the case comment argues …
