Investigating The Performance Of A Novel Multi-Element Airfoil Concept Using Numerical Analysis, Ahmed Elbaz
Investigating The Performance Of A Novel Multi-Element Airfoil Concept Using Numerical Analysis, Ahmed Elbaz
Mechanical Engineering
Separation control is one of the trending topics recently for Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) applications, flow separation that occur on the suction side of an airfoil is a major limitation for VAWTs starting and power coefficient; passive control of flow separation has been attracting wind energy research community recently. The principle objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of the multi-element airfoil on the aerodynamic characteristics at wide range of angles of attack at a Reynolds number of 140,000. The multi element airfoil modification has been implemented by replacing the baseline airfoil with two airfoil members within …
Numerical Investigation On The Effect Of Surface Perturbations On Aerodynamics Of Cambered Airfoils, Ahmed Elbaz
Numerical Investigation On The Effect Of Surface Perturbations On Aerodynamics Of Cambered Airfoils, Ahmed Elbaz
Mechanical Engineering
The issue of the flow separation and the urge to reach higher performance ratings in airfoils can be acquired through the passive surface modification. By altering the shape of the upper surface to have a perturbated shape using a simple sinusoidal wave, the flow characteristics of airfoils can be enhanced to yield higher desired outputs. This study proposes the effect of both the wave amplitude and the number of waves for the perturbated upper surface on the lift and drag characteristics for SG-6040 and SG-6042 airfoils. Perturbating the upper surface of the airfoil can be of a great advantage as …
Numerical Investigation Of Flow Over An Airfoil With Active Cavity, Ahmed Elbaz
Numerical Investigation Of Flow Over An Airfoil With Active Cavity, Ahmed Elbaz
Mechanical Engineering
Wind turbine blades are commonly made of airfoils due to their high lifting characteristics. The performance of the airfoils can reach higher optimal conditions with applying various modifications on the airfoil geometry. The need to improve airfoil performance at low values of Reynolds number is essential to small power wind turbines. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate methods to increase the lift to drag ratio, which results in better aerodynamic performance of the airfoil used in wind turbines at low Reynolds number using active flow control by employing a surface cavity with suction. The investigation considered both …

A Crisis Within A Crisis: Nyc Landlords Ramp Up Harassment Of Vulnerable Tenants In Wake Of Pandemic, Joseph A. Jungermann Iii
Capstones
Already burdened with more sickness and death during the pandemic than other New Yorkers, low-income tenants and tenants of color are particularly vulnerable to additional harassment by landlords who seek to take advantage of the city's health and financial crisis to force them out. Brooklyn residents Delene Ahye, Dexter Lendor and Sonny Singh tell stories of their landlord, landlord agents and building manager’s harassment, which began during the pandemic’s most dangerous spikes in New York City. These forms of harassment included intimidation, abusive construction, constant buyout offers and biometrics and surveillance technology.

It encompasses the pandemic as the boost the industry needed, discussion of science’s bad reputation and the potential benefits, especially for new workspaces and real estate investors. Colorado is a focus as a burgeoning market. The news value of this story as a primer is how this will be both a beneficial industry and one that must be held to account if it becomes too monopolistic. Comparisons are from the viewpoint that bioscience is like the next Silicon Valley, but statements …

Federation Divided, Max M. Balton

At the start of the 2020 school year, a lack of covid safety plans led teachers like Rosy Clark to protest, urging her union the United Federation of Teachers to act. She and other progressives in the dissident caucus, Movement of Rank and File Educators, were willing to strike to ensure their safety. Union leadership hesitated largely because public union strikes are illegal under the state’s Taylor Law.
This four-part audio documentary looks at the history of the UFT and this contentious state law. The union began striking under more onerous strike prohibition legislation. Its roots are steeped in radical …

New York's jazz scene is in shambles. COVID has disrupted virtually all in-person musical performances. Musicians are left with no definite time frame as to when they will be allowed to enter a club again, and club owners are doing all they can to keep the music alive.

Functional roles of neutrophil elastase (NE) have not been examined in distinct steps of the metastatic cascade. NE, delivered to primary tumors as a purified enzyme or within intact neutrophils or neutrophil granule content, enhanced human tumor cell intravasation and subsequent dissemination via NE-mediated formation of dilated intratumoral vasculature. These effects depended on picomole range of NE activity, sensitive to its natural inhibitor, α1PI. In

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is known to induce pro-inflammatory response and ultimately leads to cell death. Mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF) is an ER-localized protein whose expression and secretion is induced by ER stress and a crucial survival factor. However, the underlying mechanism of how MANF exerts its cytoprotective activity remains unclear due to the lack of knowledge of its receptor. Here we show that Neuroplastin (NPTN) is such a receptor for MANF. Biochemical analysis shows the physiological interaction between MANF and NPTN on the cell surface. Binding of MANF to NPTN mitigates the inflammatory response and apoptosis via suppression …

Covid-19 has uniquely and disproportionately impacted women. Nearly 60% of those who have lost their jobs are women. Women who stayed working had a higher likelihood of serving on the frontline during the height of the pandemic as essential workers. With most schools not fully back in-person, homeschooling responsibilities have increased and endured longer than expected. These tensions ripple through families. Fathers are finding themselves with front-row seats to the mounting pressure working mothers face, causing household dynamics to shift. As the intricacies of households come to light, fathers are willing to renegotiate their roles with their partners as well …

When COVID-19 hit New York in March 2020, the city’s 1,800 public schools were forced to make a sudden pivot to remote instruction. The scramble to transition 1.1 million students to online learning brought unprecedented challenges for principals, teachers, students and families, leaving everyone eager for a return to “normal.”
For schools in low-income neighborhoods, and those serving students with disabilities, this disruption has been especially difficult. But as the months passed, it became clear that the pandemic was not ending anytime soon. Without clear guidance from the city, schools grappled with the uncertainty of how to safely reopen, and …

This piece looks at the implications of retirement savings for Americans under the changing work environment, more specifically, the gig economy. Currently, 34% of Americans engage in some form of gig or short-term work. Those who engage in gig work as their main job, have far fewer savings set aside for retirement. Additionally, these types of jobs don’t give workers access to tax-advantaged retirement accounts.

Bahr is a personal documentary essay that probes the silences surrounding war and trauma in the protagonist's family and country.
Thirty years after the end of the civil war in Lebanon, thrusted by the October 17 revolution, the youth seeks a reconciliation while struggling to apply the past's lessons in a similarly painful present.
The short documentary follows the conversation between the protagonist/narrator who was born after the war, and her mom who lived it. The latter is resistant to talk about the past and her lingering trauma.

In 2019, after a weekend full of rejection in the gayest neighborhood in Los Angeles, I became so ashamed of my phenotypically black facial features, I completely stopped looking in the mirror. As it turns out, I’m one of many black people who have internalized anti-blackness to such an extent. Skin bleaching is a multi-billion-dollar sector of the cosmetics industry, with Africa being its biggest market, and studies show that black people with darker skin and wider noses are more likely to be killed during encounters with the police. So, an honest conversation about systemic racism is actually a conversation …
