International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Composite materials are utilized in many industries today due to its high performance and lightweight. However, the part manufacturing process of traditional composites is complicated and often involves high cost. The molds used for composite manufacturing are usually one of the contributors to the high part manufacturing cost. The authors demonstrated in this paper a manufacturing process for a carbon fiber reinforced composite rocket payload housing using an additively manufactured polylactic acid (PLA) payload housing core. The paper also demonstrates the designing and manufacturing of a functional product, which was used in a real-life application, achieved by college undergraduate students. …

Creation Of Two Valid Scales: Willingness To Fly In An Aircraft And Willingness To Pilot An Aircraft, Stephen Rice, Scott R. Winter, John Capps, Justin Trombley, John Robbins, Mattie Milner, Tracy L. Lamb

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

The purpose of the current study was to develop two scales that could be used concurrently or independently to measure passenger willingness to fly (WTF), and aviator willingness to pilot (WTP), respectively. This is especially useful to determine challenges involving acceptance of new aviation technology for both pilots and passengers. There were five stages in developing the WTF scale for passengers, following Hinkin’s scale development process. Cronbach’s Alpha and Guttmann’s Split Half tests were used to confirm high internal consistency and reliability, while factor analysis was used to confirm construct validity. The scale was tested in order to confirm sensitivity …

Automatic Gaze Classification For Aviators: Using Multi-Task Convolutional Networks As A Proxy For Flight Instructor Observation, Justin Wilson, Sandro Scielzo, Sukumaran Nair, Eric C. Larson

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

In this work, we investigate how flight instructors observe aviator scan patterns and assign quality to an aviator's gaze. We first establish the reliability of instructors to assign similar quality to an aviator's scan patterns, and then investigate methods to automate this quality using machine learning. In particular, we focus on the classification of gaze for aviators in a mixed-reality flight simulation. We create and evaluate two machine learning models for classifying gaze quality of aviators: a task-agnostic model and a multi-task model. Both models use deep convolutional neural networks to classify the quality of pilot gaze patterns for 40 …

Relational Rural Geographies, Resilience, And Narratives Of Small-Scale Fruit Farming In The Metropolitan Countryside Of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Felipe Da Silva Machado

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

This thesis analyses the processes through which farming and rural communities in transition economies build resilience in the face of changes to rural areas caused by globalisation and urbanisation. The study is based on analysis of how urban-rural interactions have affected small-scale farming in the metropolitan countryside of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, an area where land-use, economic and environmental policies and urban land speculation have prompted increasing competition between agricultural, industrial, residential and conservation land uses within a highly multifunctional countryside. To achieve this, the research examined the pressures facing farmers in areas affected by the metropolitan dynamics of Rio …

Eco-Engineering Of Coastal Infrastructure: A Design For Life, Kathryn O'Shaughnessy Jan 2020

Eco-Engineering Of Coastal Infrastructure: A Design For Life, Kathryn O'Shaughnessy

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Coastal urbanisation has driven humans to build artificial defences to protect infrastructure from rising sea level, erosion and stormier seas. Artificial structures are proliferating in the coastal and marine environments (“ocean sprawl”), resulting in a loss of natural habitat, species diversity and ecosystem services. To mitigate the impacts of ocean sprawl, the practice of eco-engineering of coastal infrastructure has been developed. A strong evidence base in support of eco-engineering is growing, yet there remain critical knowledge gaps. This work investigated the ecology of artificial structures and their ability to be enhanced in order to increase species diversity, addressing five knowledge …

Understanding The Fate Of Active Pharmaceutical Compounds In Waters Receiving Poorly Or Untreated Wastewater For The Development Of A Dedicated Environmental Risk Assessment Approach, Simone Bagnis Jan 2020

Understanding The Fate Of Active Pharmaceutical Compounds In Waters Receiving Poorly Or Untreated Wastewater For The Development Of A Dedicated Environmental Risk Assessment Approach, Simone Bagnis

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The global increasing consumption and production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) is of a growing environmental concern. The inherently biological activity of APIs creates a concern of potential ecotoxicological effects even at very low concentrations. Such risk is particularly exacerbated in low and low-middle income countries (LLMICs) where it is common the practice of direct discharge of untreated wastewater (DDUW) into surface waters, which creates a heavily polluted area downstream, described as the “impact zone”. Little is known about the environmental fate of APIs in this area. Nevertheless, measured environmental concentrations (MECs) of LLMICs show higher concentrations than for high-income …

Controls On Stratigraphy And Architecture Of Shallow-Water Deltas: Examples From The Early Cretaceous Of Central-Eastern Spain, Grant Cole Jan 2020

Controls On Stratigraphy And Architecture Of Shallow-Water Deltas: Examples From The Early Cretaceous Of Central-Eastern Spain, Grant Cole

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Deltas form where a river meets a standing body of water (e.g. ocean) and deposits its sediment load. They are sensitive recorders of the interplay of fluvial (river) processes, that deliver the sediment to the standing body of water, and wave and tidal processes that redistribute the delivered sediment. When basinal (waves / tides) processes cannot sufficiently redistribute the delivered sediments, river-dominated deltas prevail, which are fantastic recorders of autogenic (internal to the delta) processes that control its overall evolution and internal architecture. Allogenic (external to delta) processes, such as tectonics, can influence and modify the river produced architecture. Therefore, …

The Concept Of Confidence Of Older People Living With Frailty And Implications For Practice, Frazer Underwood Jan 2020

The Concept Of Confidence Of Older People Living With Frailty And Implications For Practice, Frazer Underwood

School of Nursing and Midwifery Theses

Background Our human world is aging. The prevalence of older people living with syndromes of frailty is growing too. Frailty syndromes, such as falls, immobility, delirium, incontinence and susceptibility to medication side effects, are leading causes of acute hospitalisation of older people. Confidence is recognised to impact on individuals’ physical health and mental well-being, despite it not being clearly expressed in the literature. Health and social care policy and practice now focus on frailty interventions to reduce long-term demands of this growing population. Understanding the relationship of the concept of confidence and its associated impact on the physical health and …

The Sheeted Dyke-Gabbro Transition Zone: The Key To Unravelling The Palaeomagnetic Record Of The Oman Ophiolite, Louise Maria Theresia Koornneef Jan 2020

The Sheeted Dyke-Gabbro Transition Zone: The Key To Unravelling The Palaeomagnetic Record Of The Oman Ophiolite, Louise Maria Theresia Koornneef

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The Oman ophiolite is a natural laboratory for the study of processes operating above a nascent subduction zone. It formed in the Late Cretaceous by supra-subduction zone spreading and shortly afterwards was emplaced onto the Arabian continental margin. Twelve massifs in the ophiolite expose complete sections of the Neotethyan oceanic lithosphere, including upper mantle peridotites, lower crustal gabbros, and upper crustal sheeted dykes and lava flows. Previous palaeomagnetic studies have suggested that the southern massifs of the ophiolite were affected by a large-scale remagnetization event during emplacement, which completely replaced original remanences acquired during crustal accretion. In contrast, primary magnetizations …

Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis allows the simultaneous examination of organisms across multiple trophic levels and domains of life, providing critical information about the complex biotic interactions related to ecosystem change. Here we used multilocus amplicon sequencing of eDNA to survey biodiversity from an eighteen-month (2015–2016) time-series of seawater samples from Monterey Bay, California. The resulting dataset encompasses 663 taxonomic groups (at Family or higher taxonomic rank) ranging from microorganisms to mammals. We inferred changes in the composition of communities, revealing putative interactions among taxa and identifying correlations between these communities and environmental properties over time. Community network analysis provided evidence …

An Assessment Of The Legality Of Fake News Within The Mainstream Media – With Specific Regard To Its Influence On The Political Climate, Ayesha Faraj Al-Nuaimi

Plymouth Law Review

This article aims to investigate whether the law and regulation provided by the government is sufficient in tackling the increasing issue of fake news (FN) ‘‘a false story that appears to be news, usually created to influence political views’’.2 An examination on whether increased regulation would restrict the United Kingdom’s tradition of a free, investigative press, will be comparatively analysed to serve a contrast in perspectives to the laxer attitudes of the American media system. With the rapid evolution of technology, the radical influence FN has on the political climate will likely increase. A 2015 poll showed that 41% of …

Will The United Kingdom’S Exit From The European Union Have An Impact On International Arbitration Within The United Kingdom?, Hugo Persad

Plymouth Law Review

This article will aim to assess whether Britain’s exit from the European Union will impact arbitration. This is a very topical issue as no one can accurately predict what direction this will take as there are many avenues that need to be explored. As Lord Goldsmith QC suggests: "The success of London arbitration depends in no way upon the UK’s membership of the EU;"2 although, as the New Law Journal argues: ‘London will gain a distinctly competitive edge as a seat for arbitration in comparison to other European cities’3 in relation to the resurrection of anti-suit injunctions. Examination of the …
