Coastal wetlands such as mangrove forests and salt marshes provide a range of important benefits to people, broadly defined as ecosystem services. These include provisioning services such as fuelwood and food, regulating services such as carbon sequestration and wave attenuation, and various tangible and intangible cultural services. However, strong negative perceptions of coastal wetlands also exist, often driven by the perceived or actual ecosystem disservices that they also produce. These can include odour, a sense of danger, and their real or perceived role in vector and disease transmission (e.g. malaria). This review provides an introduction to the ecosystem services and …

This study explored locations, programs, and content of graduate education in business communication to provide guidance for prospective graduate students interested in becoming business communication faculty.

The researchers conducted a survey of business communication scholars, drawing on the backgrounds and knowledge of those who currently teach and research business communication.

Findings indicate that 93 universities offer programs supporting graduate business communication education. This number dwarfs the 12 previously documented programs. These 93 programs are rarely called “business communication.” More respondents received training in business communication practice in master’s programs than in doctoral programs, while more respondents received training in pedagogy …

This review examines Francis Fukuyama’s Identity: The Demand for Dignity and the Politics of Resentment and evaluates both its substantive thesis and its relevance to legal writing pedagogy. The reviewer summarizes Fukuyama’s three-part argument: that modern identity politics, rooted in the concept of thymos (the human desire for recognition), has reshaped political conflict; that this development poses a significant threat to liberal democratic institutions; and that a renewed, creedal national identity grounded in universal democratic values offers a necessary remedy. This article analyzes the small business exemption codified in the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA), which limits coverage to employers with fifty or more employees and thereby excludes a substantial portion of the American workforce from job-protected leave. Situating the FMLA within the broader landscape of federal employment legislation, the author examines the legislative history that led Congress to adopt a significantly broader small business exemption than those found in comparable statutes such as Title VII and the ADA. A Second Amendment case now pending at the Supreme Court, New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. City of New York, tests the extent to which New York City may limit the movement of guns along city streets. The briefing in that case is, however, incomplete. Second Amendment jurisprudence calls for an examination of historical analogues to the firearms regulation at issue. In this paper we answer the call of Sheppard (2012) and Brunner & Kim (2016) and present a model for teaching data analytics in an introductory information systems class using the Python programming language. The pedagogy follows an active-learning strategy in which students are assumed to have no statistical or Python programming training prior to class. In Chattanooga, TN, the construction of a fiber optic telecommunications network has led to a tech-based revitalization strategy, and the promotion of entrepreneurial and technical positions within the Downtown. This dissertation questions what revitalization, the “Chattanooga Way,” means to differently situated residents of Chattanooga, TN, and how those differences in interpretation are related to lived experiences of economic inequality. Powerful local discourses, like the Chattanooga Way policy model and its accompanying “origin myth” of Chattanooga’s development often conceal disparities between grass-roots, public, and private sector notions of economic revitalization. Mass incarceration and its effects are well documented and carceral privatization is hotly contested on moral and economic grounds. This dissertation examines the local effects of carceral privatization in the U.S. south in historical context. Tallulah is a small, rural predominately African American town in northeastern Louisiana that endures high rates of poverty, unemployment, and low educational attainment. It also hosts four private prisons operated by LaSalle Corrections, LLC. This dissertation investigates how community rebuilding is occurring in a gravely damaged, post-conflict society. Specifically, it looks at how people in two villages in Tamil, Hindu, Jaffna, Sri Lanka, are using their ‘sense of place’ and ‘place-making practices’ or what I call here their ‘village-temple consciousness’ or village consciousness, to maintain and rebuild their communities after war to make them, once again, places in which they feel a comfortable sense of belonging. This dissertation explores the experiences of an indigenous community from the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon during the implementation of extractivism, development, and redistributive projects. Drawing on twenty months of ethnographic fieldwork in the community of Playas del Cuyabeno and in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, I question the common assumption that indigenous peoples radically reject extractivism and state-imposed modernizing agendas. In contrast, this study shows how indigenous peoples negotiate resource extraction in their territories and navigate the partial failures of postneoliberal redistribution and the contradictory agendas of economic development projects—specifically the aim of the postneoliberal Ecuadorian government’s project to redistribute rents …

The cattle fever tick, Rhipicephalus annulatus (Say), is an economically destructive arthropod because of its ability to vector bovine babesiosis. Cattle fever ticks can spend more than 90% of their life cycle as questing larvae, but the effect of climatic factors on their off-host behavior and survival is unclear. The goal of this study was to measure the effects of specific ecological factors on off-host larvae in nature. The study was conducted in a south Texas pasture over a 20-mo period, during which time larval populations were surveyed and ambient weather variables - relative humidity and temperatures - were recorded. …

Biological nitrogen removal (BNR) in centralized and decentralized wastewater treatment systems is assumed to be driven by the same microbial processes and to have communities with a similar composition and structure. There is, however, little information to support these assumptions, which may impact the effectiveness of decentralized systems. We used high-throughput sequencing to compare the structure and composition of the nitrifying and denitrifying bacterial communities of nine onsite wastewater treatment systems (OWTS) and one wastewater treatment plant (WTP) by targeting the genes coding for ammonia monooxygenase (amoA) and nitrous oxide reductase (nosZ). This essay argues for the permissibility of teaching Buddhist mindfulness meditation in a critical thinking course. One might object that Buddhist mindfulness meditation is part of a religion, and religions are thought to be dogmatic and uncritical, and thus inappropriate for a critical thinking course. However, I argue that there is a pathway from the importance of self-regulation for good critical thinking to the permissibility of including mindfulness meditation in a critical thinking course. The decision to educate our students via in-person or online learning environments while COVID-19 is unrestrained is a false choice, when the clear path to achieve our chief objective safely, the education of our students, can be done online. Our decision-making should be guided by the overriding principle that people matter more than money. We recognize that lost tuition revenue if students delay or defer education is an institutional concern, but we posit that many students and parents would prefer a safer online alternative to riskier in-person options, especially as we get closer to fall, and American death tolls rise. …

Resource seeking, or the act of asking others for things that can help one attain one’s goals, is an important behavior within organizations due to the increasingly dynamic nature of work that demands collaboration and coordination among employees. Over the past two decades, there has been growing research in the organizational sciences on four types of resource seeking behaviors: feedback-, information-, advice-, and help-seeking. However, research on these four behaviors has existed in separate silos. We begin by charting the evolution of the dominant perspective on job performance from one that viewed performance as static to one that viewed it as dynamic over long timeframes (e.g., months, years, decades) to one that views it as dynamic over not just long but also short timeframes (e.g., minutes, hours, days, weeks)—and that accordingly emphasizes the within-person level of analysis. The remainder of the article is devoted to the newer, short-timeframe research on within-person variability in job performance. Integrative value generation through negotiated business deals is a fundamental way in which organizations and economic systems attain economic benefits. It is also an important way in which individuals can improve their financial situation. We propose that individuals most in need of improving their financial standing, those in a financially vulnerable situation, are least likely to reap the benefits of integrative value generation. We theorize that financial vulnerability induces a more zero-sum construal of success, or a view that success for one person must come at another person’s success. Purpose – Even though there is a growing recognition of the externality costs of low environmental performance by firms, there continue to be significant inter-firm differentials in environmental performance management. We build on the theories of strategic management to inquire into the factors contributing to these differentials. Notwithstanding its significant influence in corporate finance, the theory of incomplete contracts is arguably misunderstood by courts enforcing contracts governing corporate transactions. In resolving such disputes, judges implicitly assume that complete contracts are both achievable and desirable when the parties are financially sophisticated, and they systematically assign blame to one of the parties for leaving the contract incomplete. This, in turn, prompts parties to write ever longer and more complex agreements. Such agreements do not necessarily produce more efficient outcomes, however. In fact, they may yield unexpected outcomes or interpretations, which can be enforced opportunistically by one of the parties …

การศึกษา “กลไกการขับเคลื่อนนโยบายการปรับปรุงภูมิทัศน์คลองโอ่งอ่าง” มีวัตถุประสงค์หลักเพื่อศึกษากระบวนการขับเคลื่อนนโยบายการปรับปรุงภูมิทัศน์และพัฒนาสภาพแวดล้อมคลองของกรุงเทพมหานคร ผ่านโครงการปรับปรุงภูมิทัศน์คลองโอ่งอ่าง รวมไปถึงศึกษาอุปสรรคและปัญหาที่เกิดขึ้นระหว่างดำเนินการ และเพื่อนำผลการศึกษามาใช้กำหนดแนวทางการดำเนินนโยบายการปรับปรุงภูมิทัศน์และพัฒนาเมืองกรุงเทพมหานครต่อไป โดยใช้วิธีระเบียบวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ เก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลจากเอกสารที่เกี่ยวข้อง และจากการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกแบบกึ่งโครงสร้างกับผู้ที่มีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องทั้งในระดับปฏิบัติการไปจนถึงระดับผู้บริหารของกรุงเทพมหานคร จากการศึกษาพบว่า การขับเคลื่อนนโยบายการปรับปรุงภูมิทัศน์คลองโอ่งอ่าง มีจุดเริ่มต้นจากแผนแม่บทเพื่อการอนุรักษ์และพัฒนากรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ โดยแบ่งการดำเนินนโยบายออกเป็น 2 ระยะ ได้แก่ ระยะที่ 1 เป็นระยะของการดำเนินการรื้อย้ายแผงค้าที่มีการรุกล้ำปากคลองโอ่งอ่าง เพื่อคืนพื้นที่สาธารณะ และระยะที่ 2 เป็นระยะของการปรับปรุงภูมิทัศน์ เพื่อความเป็นระเบียบเรียบร้อยและสร้างพื้นที่เศรษฐกิจคืนสู่ชุมชน กระบวนการขับเคลื่อนนโยบายดังกล่าว มีความชัดเจนของลักษณะการทำงานในสองทิศทางผสานกันระหว่างกระบวนการกำหนดนโยบายแบบบนลงล่าง (Top-down planning) และแบบล่างขึ้นบน (Bottom-up planning) โดยภาครัฐจะเป็นผู้กำหนดยุทธศาสตร์และแผนงานสำหรับการปรับปรุงฟื้นฟูเมืองให้แก่ประชาชน ซึ่งมีปัจจัยความสำเร็จแรกเริ่มมุ่งเน้นไปที่การบังคับใช้กฎหมาย และมีบริบททางการเมืองเข้ามาเป็นตัวช่วยผลักดันให้การบังคับใช้กฎหมายนั้นเป็นไปอย่างมีประสิทธิผล ในขณะเดียวกันกรุงเทพมหานครก็ได้พิจารณากำหนดนโยบายต่อยอดจากสิ่งที่ได้ดำเนินการไปแล้ว โดยมุ่งเน้นไปที่การขับเคลื่อนกระบวนการมีส่วนร่วมของทุกภาคส่วน ทำให้เกิดพลังแห่งการขับเคลื่อนในทางสร้างสรรค์ เกิดความรู้สึกถึงการมีส่วนร่วมในการเป็นเจ้าของเมืองร่วมกัน นำไปสู่ความร่วมมือในการปรับปรุงภูมิทัศน์เมืองและการบริหารจัดการได้อย่างเป็นรูปธรรมและมีความยั่งยืน

การศึกษาวิจัยครั้งนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) เพื่อวิเคราะห์แนวทางในการขับเคลื่อนของจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัยสู่เป้าหมายการพัฒนาอย่างยั่งยืน 2) เพื่อศึกษาปัญหาและอุปสรรคในการขับเคลื่อนของจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัยสู่เป้าหมายการพัฒนาอย่างยั่งยืน ใช้วิธีการศึกษาจากการค้นคว้าจากเอกสาร และการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก ผลการศึกษาพบว่าการให้ความสำคัญกับการพัฒนาที่ยั่งยืนของจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัยเริ่มขึ้นเมื่อ สิบปีก่อน ได้ออกแบบ ‘ผังแม่บทจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย 100 ปี’ เพื่อวางรากฐานเรื่องสิ่งแวดล้อมขั้นพื้นฐานอย่างเรื่องการวางผังอาคารให้สอดคล้องกับพื้นที่สีเขียว และมีการดำเนินการมาอย่างต่อเนื่องสู่ “มหาวิทยาลัยสีเขียว” และ "มหาวิทยาลัยที่ยั่งยืน" โดยการดำเนินงานอยู่ภายใต้คณะกรรมการนโยบายมหาวิทยาลัยแห่งความยั่งยืนเพื่อดูแลโครงการความยั่งยืนทั้งหมดในวิทยาเขต แบ่งเป็น 5 กลุ่มคือ 1) ด้านกายภาพและโครงสร้างพื้นฐาน 2) ด้านการพัฒนาคุณภาพชีวิตของบุคลากร 3) ด้านการจัดการสิ่งแวดล้อมและทรัพยากร 4) ด้านการการเรียน การสอน และวิจัย และ 5) ด้านการบริหาร ธรรมาภิบาล และการมีส่วนร่วม ซึ่งแบ่งการทำงานออกเป็น 2 ส่วนสำคัญคือการดำเนินงานภายใต้คณะกรรมการนโยบายมหาวิทยาลัยแห่งความยั่งยืนซึ่งทำหน้าที่ผลักดันโครงการ กิจกรรมที่สอดคล้องกับเป้าหมายการพัฒนาที่ยั่งยืน และการทำงานของสำนักงานยุทธศาสตร์และการขับเคลื่อนซึ่งเป็นหน่วยงานที่จัดเก็บข้อมูลการดำเนินงานโครงการและกิจกรรมที่เกิดขึ้นภายในจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย และอีกหนึ่งหน้าที่สำคัญคือการนำส่งข้อมูลแก่ THE Impact Ranking และปัญหาและอุปสรรคที่สำคัญในการขับเคลื่อนเป้าหมายการพัฒนาที่ยั่งยืนคือ ความเข้าใจในเป้าหมายการพัฒนาที่ยั่งยืนของเจ้าหน้าที่ระดับปฏิบัติการ
